Shea butter and it's useage

2012-09-01T07:02:00.000-07:00

The traditional method of preparing unrefined Shea butter consists of the following steps:

Separating/cracking: The outer pulp of the fruit is removed. When dry, the nut, which is the source of Shea butter, must be separated from the outer shell. This is a social activity, traditionally done by Women Elders and young girls who sit on the ground and break the shells with small rocks.
Crushing: To make the Shea nuts into butter, they must be crushed. Traditionally, this is done with mortars and pestles. It requires lifting the pestles and grinding the nuts into the mortars to crush the nuts so they can be roasted.

Roasting: The crushed nuts are then roasted in huge pots over open, wood fires. The pots must be stirred constantly with wooden paddles so the butter does not burn. The butter is heavy and stirring it is hot, smoky work, done under the sun. This is where the slight, smoky smell of traditional Shea butter originates.
Grinding: The roasted Shea nuts are ground into a smoother paste, water is gradually added and the paste is mixed well by hand.
Separating the oils: The paste is kneaded by hand in large basins and water is gradually added to help separate out the butter oils. As they float to the top, the butter oils, which are in a curd state, are removed and excess water squeezed out. The butter oil curds are then melted in large open pots over slow fires. A period of slow boiling will remove any remaining water, by evaporation.
Collecting and shaping: The Shea butter, which is creamy or golden yellow at this point, is ladled from the top of the pots and put in cool places to harden. Then it is formed into balls.

Composition

Shea butter extract is a complex fat that contains, besides many nonsaponifiable components (substances that cannot be fully converted into soap by treatment with alkali), the following fatty acids:oleic acid (40-60%), stearic acid (20-50%), linoleic acid (3-11%), palmitic acid (2-9%), linolenic acid(<1%) and arachidic acid(<1%).[6]

Shea butter melts at body temperature and absorbs rapidly into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling

Useage

Shea butter is mainly used in cosmetics, such as lip gloss moisturizer creams and emulsions, and hair conditioners for dry and brittle hair.[citation needed] It is also used by soap makers, typically in small amounts (5-7% of the oils in the recipe), because of its property of leaving a small amount of oil in the soap.[citation needed]

In Africa, Shea butter is used for cooking oil, as a waterproofing wax, for hairdressing, for candle-making, and also as an ingredient in medicinal ointments. It is also used by makers of traditional African percussion instruments to increase the durability of wood (such as carved djembe shells), dried calabash gourds, and leather tuning straps.

2012-08-28T09:16:00.000-07:00

The President of the United States of America, Senator Barrack Obama has declared Nigeria as the world’s next economic success story, stressing that the discovery was one of the major reasons why his government is committed to helping the country build strong democratic institutions and as well remove constraints to trade and investment through the African Growth and Opportunity. Making this declaration at the ongoing US-Nigeria Trade and Investment Forum, an event organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDOA) in Washington DC, yesterday, President Obama who was represented by Ambassador Eunice Reddick, a top official of the US
Department, said that his country expanded opportunities for Nigeria to effectively access its neighbor’s market, and diversify its economy beyond a narrow reliance on natural resources as a result of the discovery that the West African nation will emerge as the world’ next economic giant. “As we support these efforts, the Diaspora can play an important role in contributing to a strong, vibrant, and economically prosperous Nigeria” he noted. President Obama pressed further that his country invests in Nigeria’s success because it recognizes Nigeria-s as a strategic center of gravity, stressing that the country’s success will as well be Africa’s success if the US can help Nigeria chart a secured, prosperous, and democratic course. The US leader also make it known that his government will encourage Nigeria in the area of private investment in the power sector as well as other sectors to help seal the promise of growth and opportunity for all Nigerians. He continued that the US government will also work to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector, which employs nearly 70 percent of the country’s population, by encouraging improvements to infrastructure that would facilitate agricultural growth. Speaking on the US-Nigeria Bi-National agreement, Obama said that the joint Commission has grown into a forum for frank, high-level concersations, in which both nations have seen substantial reforms and mutually reinforcing initiatives implemented in Nigeria. I Am The Most Criticised President In The World – Jonathan

2012-08-28T09:12:00.001-07:00

President Goodluck Jonathan has promised to prove his critics wrong in 2013 when the dividends of new policies introduced begin to manifest. Jonathan has been heavily criticized since he resumed position as the president of the country. Speaking at the 52nd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association
in Abuja, Jonathan declares the results at the end would change the hearts of Nigerians towards him. “I think I am then most criticised president in the whole world, but I tell this noble audience that before I leave, I will also be the most praised president. “I have experienced that before in my governor journey in Bayelsa state. In fact, people who were close to me will tell you that even after the election, I told them that in my first 12 months please cover your ears because you will hear all kinds of things. But as we progress, you will see (changes). “We are working very hard to stabilise power. We are working very hard to resurface our roads. We have security challenges, which we are also working very hard to bring to reasonable control. “It is not easy; we don’t have the magic wand, except the miracle worker that with the wave of the hand, probably will help to throw all these challenges away and prosperity will appear. But in pure governance issues, it takes time. “Sometimes, even people who have held offices in government criticise me to the extent of personal abuses. Sometimes I ask, were there roads across in the country and Jonathan brought flood to wipe out these roads? or we had power and I brought hurricane to break down the entire infrastructure? “If they say Boko Haram is because of poverty; were there massive irrigation projects in the North where agriculture can thrive and massive farms, and Jonathan brought drought to wipe out these farms? under two years is it possible? Well, time will tell. What I can tell Nigerians is that let those who criticize continue to criticise. “We will do our best and as we progress, Nigerians will know the truth and we’ll see that we are committed and will surely transform this country,” he said.

Tupac Foundation Honours Top Comedian, Julius Agwu

2012-08-22T04:08:00.000-07:00

One of the most versatile entertainers in Africa, Julius D’Genius’ Agwu has yet bag another international recognition few weeks after winning the African Achievers Awards in London. This honour is coming from Tupac Foundation in Atlanta where the leading comedian happens to be one of the international stars that have their names in-scriped on the bricks at the foundation.

Few days back, Julius was presented with an autobiography of Tupac Shakur titled ‘Tupac Shakur Legacy’. Autographed by Tupac’s mum, Afeni Shakur, this might not be unconnected with Julius Agwu’s support to the foundation during one of his visits to America and his popularity in Africa.

Afeni, who also wrote the forward of the book written by Jamal Joseph, wrote; “Julius Agwu, peace, love, respect, se alaafia ni? We pray we will able to come to home, Nigeria in the future. Help make our home land safe. We are ever hopeful for African peace and prosperity”.

The book, Tupac Shakur Legacy features removable reproductions of handwritten, lyrics, notebook pages and other personal memorabilia plus Tupac Shakur Speaks, a 60minutes CD featuring rare interviews with Tupac.

Speaking on this recognition, Julius said he feels very much excited and grateful to God about it. “I feel very excited and elated for this recognition. And most importantly, it is an inspiration for most of us who are in the business of entertainment because even for the fact the guy’s age was cut short at a very early stage, we know he has left a very indelible mark on the sand of time. I went to Tupac Foundation in Atlanta and I saw the projects he was working on before he died and what his mum too is doing at the foundation. I was so inspired and it got to say that for those of us who are here doing entertainment business, if we do not give back to the society, we have not really started. So everything we do, we should see it as a way of giving back to the society”.

He said further that “the foundation inspired me more that I have not even started yet. The expanse of land where the foundation is located including how they have impacted on the society says a lot that as role models, we really need to work harder because you have not achieved if you have not impacted on the people. No matter who you are and how much you think you have, you are not an achiever if you have not impacted on the people. I actually bought a brick at the foundation and my name was inscribed on it. If you go to Tupac Foundation in Atlanta, you will see my name on one of the bricks there with other great super stars. From what have been told, this is the first copy in Africa which was actually autographed by Tupac’s mother and I’m very privileged and honoured to be part of the chosen few. I’m planning a trip to the foundation this year to visit Tupac’s mum after Crack Ya Ribs in America”.

The comedian who has been hosting the Crack Ya Ribs Comedy Show annually in London over a decade has decided to take the show to other cities. And for the first time, the show will hold in New York, Houston, Dallas and Glasgow.

The London show will hold on 26 August, 2012 at the Light House Hall, 262-274 Camberwell Road, SE5 ODL, which happens to be the same venue where Laff for Christ's sake show held in April 2012. Artistes and comedians billed to perform at the London show include D’Prince, Seyi Law, Dj Abass, FunnyBone, Senator, MC Shakara and Funny Face from Ghana. Top Ghanaian acts like Guru and Khaki will also be performing at the event.

In a similar vein, the New York and Glasgow shows will hold on 1 September, 2012 at the Simphony Space Theater, 2537 Broadway, NY 10025 and 24 August, 2012 at O2 ABC 2 Glasgow respectively. Houston and Dallas are billed for September 7 & 8 respectively.

Ramadan fast continues after failure to sight new moon

2012-08-18T03:39:00.002-07:00

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Dr. Muhammed Sa'adu Abubakar announced on NTA Sokoto yesterday night that the Ramadan fast will continue through the weekend after failure to sight the new moon of Shawwal.

Muslims had hoped to conclude their fast last night and break it with the Eid-el-Fitr (Sallah) celebrations on Sunday, but as it stands, there will be no celebrations until the moon is sighted.

Is this 'non-sighting of new moon' all over the world, or just in Nigeria? And does this mean there's no public holiday Monday and Tuesday?

Mother of six insists she has no regrets over affair with hotel gardener

2012-08-18T03:33:00.002-07:00

Angry: Michelle's first husband Darrell Plews was so upset that his wife was having an affair her burned all her possessions

For a woman who owns little more than the clothes she stands up in, Michelle Dampha seems remarkably sanguine.

Michelle Plews on her wedding day to Gambian gardener Lamin Dampha last month

Michelle's possessions — her clothes, her collection of costly designer handbags, her jewellery and even treasured photos of her children — have all been destroyed in a fire. But not just any old fire. The blaze was started by her ex-husband Darrell Plews, who made a vast bonfire of her belongings after she left him for another man.
Michelle, 34, may have lost almost everything material, but what she has gained, she believes, is infinitely more valuable.

For the mother-of-six from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, claims to have found true love in the form of impoverished Gambian gardener Lamin Dampha, 25, whom she met just seven months ago while on holiday with her former husband in Africa.
So convinced is Michelle that her love for Dampha is genuinely reciprocated, that she has married him in Gambia. Quite when they tied the knot remains an issue of contention. Plews believes Michelle was not yet divorced from him when she made her vows to Lamin. Michelle insists otherwise.
Whatever the truth of the matter, Darrell Plews was estranged from Michelle and intent on revenge when he let himself into the semi-detached home they once shared — while she sunbathed, oblivious, on a Gambian beach — and piled all her possessions into a giant pyre in the garden.

California fans angry over cancelled Wizkid concert

2012-08-16T09:13:00.002-07:00

Wizkid

Wizkid fans in Oakland, California have expressed their bitter disappointment at the record label EME for cancelling a Wizkid concert which was to hold Friday, August 17, 2012.

On August 14, four days before the concert EME boss Banky W via micro-blogging site Twitter had announced the cancellation of the Wizkid tour;

‘Hey folks… The Cali and Canada stops on the tour have unfortunately been canceled. Due to circumstances way beyond anyone’s control’, @BankyW tweeted.

‘Truthfully it takes a lot to put on a tour. A million & one factors go into it. Along the way, sadly, sometimes, inevitably, things go wrong. And when it’s out of your control, There’s not much you can do about it at that point but learn lessons & do better next time.. Truth be told, we take a pay cut while attempting something like this. A serious one. But that’s okay cuz of the love the fans have shown us. And the love we have for them in return‘, he explained.

The tour put together by Royal Entertainment, DJ Slim and EME was also to feature Wizkid’s labelmate Skales and affiliate Rotimi.

Royal Entertainment’s head promoter Azazel Noble however does not seem to be calmed by Banky’s tweets as he angrily took to his Twitter account and bore his mind.

‘N***z think releasing some bull***t press release absolves them of all guilt.. U been dreaming bro..‘, Azazel Noble (@Echecrates) tweeted.

‘Man how one label can just destroy concerts in Cali for a long time to come.. Nobody will believe any promoter doing a concert for awhile. Oh so it’s out of Control when it comes to California and Canada but when it comes to DC/ATL/Chicago control full ground. Man we got played. Lemme tell u what pisses me off bout this shit..Dem niggaz told us they wanted a thousand ppl in the buildin 4 the concert. That’s why niggaz was promoting like rapture was bout to come lol.. I’m not sure there are even a 1000k africans with Visas in Cali. So after all that promo dem wan leave homies with “somethinghugecameup”..Oloriburuku tinzz. Cancel all your tours and leave.. Cancel EVERYTHING!! Shey something came up? hit up ATL/CHICAGO/DC tell em the same thing’, Noble continued..

Banky W has however assured fans that tickets would be refunded. ‘So our sincere deepest apologies go to the fans in Cali & Canada, who wanted to be at the shows.. You will get refunded 100% for ur tickets‘.

Last year a similar scenario happened; due to Visa acquisition issues, Wizkid and Skales missed out on what was to be their first ever US tour after promoting and selling tickets.

EME have not given a particular reason as to why the California tour has been cancelled. And fans are already buzzing on social media, with many commenting as it concerns them.

‘@Echecrates who’s giving me back my flight money?? Eme? Or you‘, a fan @AdannaFromLA asked.

‘@Echecrates Bros face it, dey no wan take long journey to west coast & Canada. Simple.’, @IgboSocratesMD

‘@Echecrates Yes you guys have time and its good! They should be taught a good lesson so they(&other artists) think twice before doing such.‘, @skepticalsasha wrote.

‘Just imagining all my guys I forced to come to this concert! Chai! I have lost all my bargaining chips! Smh‘, said @adewus4real

The EME tour continues in other cities – Atlanta (August 18), Detroit City (August 25) and Chicago (September 1).

Imo asks court to discharge reinstated LG chairmen’s suit

2012-08-15T10:14:00.000-07:00

On Tuesday, Imo State Government questioned the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit filed by the reinstated 27 local government chairmen against it. At a hearing, counsel to Imo State Government, Mr. Adeniyi Akintola, SAN, argued that the court did not have jurisdiction to hear the substantive matter.

Akintola, who is defending the Governor, the State Independent Electoral Commission and the State House of Assembly in the suit, told the court that technically there was no case before it.
"With due respect Sir, this court does not have the jurisdiction to hear this matter because the tenure of the claimants expired August 8, 2012. Again, there is an extant law that must be obeyed, which gave the claimants two-year tenure", Akintola argued.

Defending himself, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Soronnadi Njoku, argued that the issue of jurisdiction was fundamental, stressing that when raised, every other thing must stand still.
"Jurisdiction is the live wire for the continuance of every suit. Apart from this, I was only served this morning and I need at least 24 hours to react appropriately", Njoku argued.
Presenting the reinstated chairmen's case, their counsel, Mr. D.O. Agbo, argued that the only motion ripe for hearing was that filed by the claimants seeking to nullify the dissolution of the local councils by the Governor.
"The first defendant (Governor) took a unilateral decision to dissolve the councils and that was why we filed the motion for the nullification of the action taken by him", Agbo argued.
The claimants however contended that at all times the duty of the court was to jealously guard its powers before proceeding to determine whether it was incompetent to hear the matter from which the contempt issue arose.
After listening carefully to the submissions, Hon. Justice Ngozi Opara, fixed next Thursday to rule on whether the court has jurisdiction the hear the matter or not.

World MostHairiest teenager

2012-08-15T10:04:00.002-07:00

The hairiest teenager is Supatra "Nat" Sasuphan (Thailand) according to the Ferriman Gallwey method of evaluation of Hirsutism. She was measured on the set of Lo Show dei Record in Rome, Italy, on 4 March 2010.

Meeting Nat was one of the many highlights of the show for on-screen adjudicator, Marco Frigatti. "She's a remarkable little girl," says Marco. "She's proud of who she is and wants to be treated just like everyone else. She's not the one with the problem - it's only those who treat her differently who've got the problem."

And Nat agrees. "I don't feel any different to anyone else, and I've got lots of friends at school."
