For My Mum :)

The past two weeks I can't stop thinking about Mum. All that she does, all that she gives, all that she taught me, and all that she expresses left a permanent and perfect example of a wonderful mother in my mind.
I'm constantly trying to emulate her as best I can because she has so much grace, selflessness, intelligence, humility, the perfect amount of sternness, limitless joy, and humor.

I love that after 23 years of knowing her she still surprises me with a new piece of her luminescent personality

I love how honest she has been with me all my life
I love how much freedom she gave me growing up - as if she knew that God was my nanny, rather than appointing someone to watch me at all times [would have made playing deep in the woods, falling into rivers, and exploring a lot harder to accomplish :) ]
I love that she gave me three of the best sisters a girl could ask for!
I love that I still get to talk to her and write her whenever I need it even though she's all the way in Australia... or as Doug and I like to call it: the Future [14 hours ahead, it's crazy]
I love that a few parents that I nanny for tell me that I have an accent when I talk to their kids and say things like "mummy" or "it's ok" [typical Mum phrases, I can't believe I picked up an accent without spending more than one year in Aus.]
I love that in spite of all the wonderful things she does - she takes no credit for it - she gives all credit to God

To sum it up so that this post isn't 50 pages long

I LOVE everything about my Mum

I hope she had an amazing Mother's Day weekend, I told her Caitlin would have to represent us yankee sisters - I'm sure she did a good job :)

Trip to Steelville

When my sister Monica invited me to go to a banjo concert in Steelville, MO

Like any other person with a pulse... I jumped at the chance

I mean, look how cute this location is!! It is an old fully restored soda fountain shop on Steelville's main street that I completely fell for hard [I fall for any place that makes delicious malt shakes :)]

The uber skilled banjo/guitar/violin player had his adorable wifey there who was also musically inclined and played a few songs with him. We liked her, she was sassy :)

It was a pretty rad time-warp type night.

Since we were so far from home [a whole 1 1/2 hours :P] Moni and I spent the night at her mom-in-law's farm that we lovingly call "The Farm"

I love visiting this place, and waking up to this:

So yes, I certainly got my fill of puppies, horsies, kitties, nature

and fresh baked apple muffins last weekend

Anyone who knows me knows that I have needed a new purse for a while

- in fact I just needed my OWN purse -

My last purse was a total fluke freak accident when a lovely college roommate of mine lent me a purse to borrow for winter break and then never really wanted it back - Sooooo my free/stolen purse was shiny navy blue and received a lot of compliments, which I never took credit for

Then it started to fall apart on me [deservedly so] and the navy blue flaked away to reveal the brown underskin of the bag - NOT a great look

The purse I had before that was a brown canvas satchel that I took way too long to throw out after it had been sun-damaged from hanging out in my car's backseat for too long

I have never had more than one purse at one time

I have never really gone out shopping for a purse before - they've all just been "Woops! I have a purse!" type deals

.... I'm not a big "Purse Girl" I guess

But fortunately Natalie had a very esspensive gift card to Coach that she said I could use if I found anything that struck my fancy

Last night at the mall I asked Doug if we could poke through Coach to see if ANYTHING was up to my picky purse standards - first purse that caught my eye, tried on, loved, got it, boom

I mean it when I say crush too - I get kinda nervous when I listen to it, I want to listen to it all the time, I am uber happy when it is playing, and I sort of squealed in gitty excitement when I heard it randomly on the radio the other day..... even though I own the song!
What is wrong with me?!

When I played it in Doug's car yesterday for the 10th time that day I justified it by saying:

"Addictions need to be fed, Doug"

".... oh is that what they say?"

I hope I can pass this unhealthy behavior on to some more people

Valentine's Day - Married Style:

I wasn't gonna do anything for Doug..... until about 6:00 pm on the 14th

So I went yogging all the way down to the grocery store [like less than a mile - weak]

and bought some stufffff and made it all in a mad rush before he got home!

note to you: simply shaping a wad of sugar cookie dough into a heart does NOT guarantee it will cook into that shape - my attempted heart turned more into like a butt shape.... not romantic.....

also I *opted* not to get red/pink sprinkles - the store did not just run out.....

Honest Thoughts from a Very Soon-to-Be Bride

~ My dress is hard to walk in... which should be interesting

~ Doug and I's only concern seems to be that we are not concerned at all. Of course we hope the wedding comes together nicely and that the guests have a great time, but we are not concerned about whether or not we're right for each other or how our marriage will work once it starts because we know it just will. I hope this doesn't sound like arrogance - we are just confident in ourselves, our love, and our commitment to each other

~ I've had a big stupid cough since like New Years and I'd like it to go away before the wedding please :)

~ Flowers are still stupid and we bought way too many - guests, please take a bunch before you leave cause I sure don't want them

~ I wish our guest list could have been 500+

Everyday it seems we can think or more people we wished we could have invited

~ Its hard to be a "Non-bride Bride" - its hard to not care about silly things and in turn care about them NOT looking like you cared - I keep saying that I'm going for a "look" of non-chalantness. Unfortunately achieving that look is surprisingly difficult

~ That being said, Sophia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" has had a major impact on many elements of the wedding, I even made Doug watch it with me before we got into the thick of wedding planning just so he knew what I was thinking about when I talked about certain things. Think about it - "A Non-chalant Marie Antoinette inspired wedding"........ what is wrong with me :P

~ Here's the brutally honest part: From the age of maybe 11 I decided that I wouldn't want to get married.... ever

I wanted to be a permanent bachelorette. For some reason at that age I decided that marriage wasn't something to plan into life, or have a timeline that it fits into like "Get married by age 25" so I went through life and relationships saying that I'd never get married. Dating wasn't for the purpose of "finding a mate" or figuring out what I did and did not want in a husband. Discussion about marriage made me uncomfortable, and the "love-word" was something I typically avoided.

I didn't want to think about or expect something that I might not get. I didn't want to think about marrying someone unless - get ready for it - he wanted to marry me [and I'm so "spiky" I figured that'd never happen, which I accepted and was fine with] I learned very early that I didn't take well to disappointment, and since marriage is one of "the big ones" in terms of disappointment, I conveniently evaded it [as you can imagine - it wasn't very hard to dodge marriage before the age of 20 :)]

I knew that divorce was something I might not recover from, so what better than avoid the first step to that outcome. Statistics are not on marriage's side and movies NEVER portrayed them in a way that was attractive to me - it was all way too horribly emotional, or puke-inducingly lovey-dovey, or very "cheating heavy" - as if men, even GOOD men, couldn't help themselves when it came to a beautiful woman in a skimpy outfit. Some guys I knew for real did not help me change that view.

So yes - marriage freaked me out, seemed a little unrealistic and I avoided it from all angles - then DOUG came along

He was the first guy that I didn't foresee an inevitable break-up happening, I wasn't outrageously negative with him, I didn't feel like there were any ulterior motives when he did things for me or said things to me, and the best thing was that our fights were not "oh no, could this be the one that breaks us up?" they were just "lets figure this out so we can go back to having the best time of our lives with each other" - after a while I figured I had to date this guy forever!

Apparently he thought the same thing - so he proposed "forever dating" to me, and I said ok :)

So here stands a.... I don't want to say changed woman, cause I'm still me, still that stupid 11 year old. I still hold marriage in very high regard

I don't think marriage is a normal step that everyone gets to - I think marriage is strange, haha, in the best sense possible. I mean its like winning the lottery, which is rare! I think people who marry are the lucky few, not average. Not everyone is meant to get married. We're all complete and perfect by ourselves, its just how we were made. But I've decided I like Doug enough to keep him around forever :)

~ Kissing the same person for the rest of my life: How rad is that!?! He's the best kisser I know and he's agreeing to kiss only me for the rest of his life - how'd I get so darn lucky!?

~ Reiterating this fact: We are not two incomplete halves fusing together, who need each other and would just die without the other - we are two complete individuals coming together to do great things in life, I don't need him and he doesn't need me and saying that isn't hurtful to either of us. There is no dependency involved in the fact that we simply like to spend a lot of our time together :)

~ One of the things I've found that I have to "give up" is that I won't get to have an apartment and decorate it by myself, exactly how I want. But it's ok :) We'll figure it out and neither of us seems to have nightmare styles like "all beige" or "black and gunmetal everything" - I think our styles will marry well together [see what I did there?]

~ What shall I do while Doug plays computer games??? I can paint, workout, read, watch tv/movies, shop, chat with friends, organize, clean, bake tasty treats!! Oh yeah, I'll be just fine :P

~ Our wedding date being February 4th was not just a strategic move to have our wedding coincide with Superbowl Weekend [Patriots are gonna win!!!], but an even more strategic move to avoid Valentine's Day - for the past 15 years or so, that day has been MY DAY. At first it was a bummer, no stupid carnations for me, boohoo, poor me - but at some point I started to like it: I'd take myself out on a nice date, and buy me some goodies - I'm the best boyfriend I could ever have on V-Day because I know exactly what I want :) Doug and I can anniversary early Feb, I can have Valentine's for myself and life will be wonderful

~ My wedding band is in a box inside a box inside a bag and OH MAN I want to open it up and wear it all the time. Soon I'll do that Charlotte York thing where I look at my ring with all my clothes in the closet to see how well everything looks together [yes, I totally already did that with the engagement ring]

~ I can't wait to be at our wedding :)

Huh.... here I was yesterday watching hulu and multitasking like a beast - when I was slapped in the face by an ad from my most favorite soda - Dr. Pepper - for their new drink Dr. Pepper 10. Don't get me wrong, I like the Old Spice commercials and that one with the guy beating up a squid or something - but this is on a completely different level - because it's offensive

I'll lay out some of the typical responses to this:

1) "It's just a joke"

Which is what 'women suck, brutish manly men are awesome'???

I don't get the joke.... sue me

2) "Secret brand deodorant ads and tampon commercials are just for women - you don't see men getting all uppity about that"

Yes everyone, women NEED these things, no one NEEDS soda, there's not even anything in this drink that makes it "Male Specific." Tampons aren't some awesome product that companies decided to 'aim heavily towards women' like this new soda is - tampons are ACTUALLY ONLY FOR WOMEN

3) "What's SOOO bad about it?"

Oh I don't know, let's replace 'Not for Women' with something like 'Not for Asians' or 'Not for the Handicapped' - because that is equally as ridiculous and offensive as those specifications are - again there are no ingredients that make this bad or harmful to other groups - this is just advertising at its worst, playing to the Group Think or Mop Mentality of men, giving them a "Gentlemen's Club" to be 'manly' in, alienate others and joke about how silly women are.......

4) "Perhaps the campaign is trying to entice you as a woman to try the product, as a way to 'stick it to 'em'"

- I didn't play baseball for ten years because someone told

me I couldn't because of my gender - I just did

- I don't like action movies because I've been told I'm not

supposed to - I just do

- Everything I am - whether it's masculine or feminine is

because I JUST AM - not because someone told me I

had to or couldn't

While I'm sure putting up barriers for women make them want to break them down - but why do we have to put them up in the first place? Why not just let men and women do what they want and what they can - without attaching a certain stigma to everything

Those who are brave break the "gender rules" every single day - I'd like to just see

no more gender rules - what good do they do?

To appeal to men, Dr Pepper Ten completely revamped their marketing strategy from Diet Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper Ten has calories and sugar unlike its diet counterpart. Instead of the “dainty tan bubbles” on the diet can, Ten will be wrapped in gunmetal grey packaging with silver bullets. And while Diet Dr Pepper's marketing is women-friendly, the ad campaign for Ten goes out of its way to alienate and denigrate women.

For instance, there's a Dr Pepper Ten Facebook page for men only. I had to create a new Facebook page indicating I’m a guy to even view the content. It includes games and videos aimed at being "manly." There's a “manly shooting gallery” where men have “23 seconds to take out all the girlie stuff” with the directions of, “If it’s girlie shoot it – if it’s manly avoid it.” There’s a gun scope view on a pair of red high heels and then “girlie” items like lipstick, flowers, rainbows and unicorns flash by cowboy hats, hammers and little plastic toy soldiers. I purposely didn’t shoot anything to see how the game ended. I was confronted with a message; “This shooting gallery is no place for a woman like you.”

There’s also a “Man-cronym” section that allows male users to create female bashing acronyms on “manly” type words such as Golf – Guys Outside Lady Free by Andrew V. According to Ryan S Bold stands for Boycott Old Lady Drinks and Manly stands for Men Acting Nobly Ladies Yawn.

TV commercials are heavy on the machismo, too including one spot that shows muscular men in the jungle battling snakes and bad guys. "Hey ladies. Enjoying the film? Of course not. Because this is our movie and this is our soda," a manly man says as he attempts to pour the soda into a glass during a bumpy ATV ride. "You can keep the romantic comedies and lady drinks. We're good."

Jim Trebilcock, executive vice president of marketing for Dr Pepper, said he's not worried about offending women with the campaign. The drink and marketing were tested in six different markets across the country before being rolled out nationally, and women weren't offended, he said. Jim Trebilcock states 40% of people who have tried the soda so far are women.

"Women get the joke," he said. "'Is this really for men or really for women?' is a way to start the conversation that can spread and get people engaged in the product."

In 2005, 1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner. That's an average of three women every day. Of all the women murdered in the U.S., about one-third were killed by an intimate partner. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner-related physical assaults and rapes every year. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, which includes crimes that were not reported to the police, 232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted in 2006. That's more than 600 women every day. Other estimates, such as those generated by the FBI, are much lower because they rely on data from law enforcement agencies. A significant number of crimes are never even reported for reasons that include the victim's feeling that nothing can/will be done. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, "growing up in a violent home may be a terrifying and traumatic experience that can affect every aspect of a child's life, growth and development. . . . children who have been exposed to family violence suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, women who experience physical abuse as children are at a greater risk of victimization as adults, and men have a far greater (more than double) likelihood of perpetrating abuse.

Advertising such as this only further exploits and demeans women – as the Facebook app does not allow women to view, the “games” are all aimed and shooting and destroying anything relating to women, and the campaign’s messaging overall speaks to degrade women. There is no different between Dr Pepper’s Ten marketing campaign messaging and the Milk Board’s Everything I Do Is Wrong Campaign. Both ad campaigns are equally sexist. I realized two things during this day:

1) I don't like taking pictures [clearly]

2) I don't like being PDA-ey.....

These are both two VERY important and necessary traits to have while taking engagement photos

and for that I apologize for the following........ how 'bout just look at Doug - he looks smashing :)

Brett is REALLY good at making pictures look cool - they looked super lame before he got

his hands on them. He made a little magic with a typical digital camera, genius.

I need to learn how to take a schmoopy photo. I need some more, what's it called, Maturity!
