USA Calls Foreign Entrepreneurs

Found a great article on BBC Business about how the USA is encouraging entrepreneurs from foreign countries to setup their business on US shores! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8645319.stm)

A new law currently in the Senate aims to change the status quo.

In February, Senator John Kerry, the former Democratic presidential candidate, and Republican Senator Richard Lugar introduced the Start-Up Visa Act in the Senate.

The bill would create a new category of visa that allows any foreign citizen who is able to raise at least $250,000 from venture capitalists, or so-called “angel” investors, to come to the US.

The entrepreneur would become a permanent US resident once the business has created five jobs, or achieved $1m in revenue, or if the visa holder has managed to raise a further $1m.

The BBC compiled a list of the top young billionaires who made their fortune on the internet:

The richest are Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the pair who set up Google in the late 1990s. They went from PhD students to (paper) billionaires in about five years. The youngest is 25-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, founder of social networking site Facebook, who has returned to the billionaire list in 2010 after dropping out in 2009 amid the economic downturn.

Do Not Live Too Many Days At A Time

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry. Two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed. We cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone!!

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow’s sun will rise, whether in splendor or behind a mask of clouds. But it will rise. Until it does we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.

This leaves only one day: today.

Any man can fight the battles of just one day. It is when you and I add the burdens of two awful eternities – yesterday and tomorrow, that we break down.

It is not necessarily the experience of today that disturbs one’s peace of mind. It is oftentime the bitterness for something which happened yesterday and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.

Let us therefore live one day at a time.

Having unanswered questions about your business can affect its growth and eventual success and prosperity. These are some of the most important areas to consider, and you shouldn’t think you can leave the task of working out solutions to them at a later date, as it will only come back to bite you in the behind!

If you are thinking about the future of your venture then in typical entrepreneurial fashion you probably have many more questions than you do tangible/solid answers. What you can do, is make sure you are mulling over the right questions in every area of your business – so that the answers you find are the ones which can lead you strongly into the future, helping you grow and achieve your goals.

Accounts and Finances

How effective is your current accounting / bookkeeping system? Does it ensure that cashflow is at its optimum through your business cycle; does it raise red flags that can be noticed? Could you find a way to automate any of your accounting steps?

Business Communication

Streamlining the way you and your employees communicate with each other and customers could be a great step in maximisng the productivity of your business. Ask yourself; have you lost any business because of inadequate communication systems? Is there a reduced productivity level or standard of product or service because communication is not clear? Are you aware of how communication could improve your business for the better by using modern technology such as VoIP or a company intranet?

If you were thinking yes to any of these questions the communications systems in your business could be spruced up to benefit, work these things out earlier rather than later!

Staff Relations

Many a business mogul have said ‘treat your staff as you wish them to treat your customers’ – sound advice! Your staff are on of your greatest assets so you should treat them as such! If you don’t have employees think about people in your network who help you out from time to time in the same respect. Make sure your going the extra mile to take care of those who are crucial to your business.

Expanding your business

Is your business ready to grow? or expand? If so you will need to ensure that you plan and execute the expansion well. Growing for the sake of growing may hurt you in the long-term than biding your time and being smart. Make sure to consider the logistics of business growth, implications for company structure and cash flow.

Make sure to ask questions about your business!!!

How Poor We Are – Different Perspectives

A short motivational story examing the perspective of poverty and how things are always different from another person’s point of view. Take favour in what you have and do no long for what others have; note your achievements but still strive for further goals. Stay inspired!

One day a father, of a very wealthy family, took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from the trip, the father asked his son,”How was the trip?”

“It was great Dad!”

“Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked.

“Oh yeah,” said the son.

“So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered,

” I saw we have one dog and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”

With this the boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added,

“Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”

SMB – The Virtual Office

In times past gone, long past gone being a business and not having a physical business office would have had you laughable and ridiculed. Today, however, it is a viable option for start-ups and an accepted way of conducting small business.

Communication and its tools have come a very long way in a very short amount of time. Improved communication means it is possible to work from almost anywhere. The small business owner can have a professional video conference with a CEO of a multi-national and its all perfectly normal in these times.

In essence, unless a public front is essential to your business – i.e retail / shop etc ; what purpose do those rents and rates fixed costs serve? status? productivity? Working from home should be a viable alternative for many small businesses. Telephonists, sales people, and administrative personnel can all work efficiently from home providing appropriate systems are in place.

Working from home, has many advantages to individuals and companies. For the individual, the convenience is a big factor which cannot be necessarily quantified. Being able to take quality breaks from work in and around your home is surely going to make one more productive when back to doing work. For the company, remote working is fast becoming an increasingly attractive option in respect to expensive offices.

The ‘new economy’ is one that is rapidly becoming made up of business with small bases that operate internationally / over vast distances than the traditional huge international HQ in one place.

Anybody considering the use of a virtual office / working from home should have a lucid pathway for its implementation and successful operation. Otherwise, it can quickly unravel. In any case, make sure you make a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of not having an office in relation to yourself / your business.

Motivating Yourself When Running A Small Business

Running your own business is a great feeling in the beginning, you cannot wait to get up in the mornings and get back to making a success of what is you do. Maintaining this ‘get up and go’ attitude is a different prospect altogether. How do you keep yourself motivated?

Take time to write down what you feel are the advantages of doing what you do. Are you in it for status, acclaim? money? lifestyle? for the future? children?

Whatever you find your motivating factors to be, list them and place them somewhere you are guaranteed to see them. As an image on your desktop – as sticky notes around your PC monitor – on the top of every page in your diary etc. Now every morning when you wake and begin you are reminded of why your doing what your doing. Keeping your goals in sight is essential – this one of the many reasons for constantly re-addressing your business plan.

If you work alone in a somewhat isolating venture, then seek somebody in preferably a similar situation who you can discuss business with and can help encourage you at times when your own spirit is dwindling. This is another situation where business mentors come in handy!

You should try and get into the habit of organising yourself ahead. Set simple goals and objectives on a weekly basis. The feeling of completing a goal no matter ow small is one that will keep the business fire burning. Furthermore, remember to congratulate yourself on things you do accomplish!
