Pintrest is the newest social network to take the world by storm, quickly allowing people to share all sorts of information to create a “dream board” of sorts, to show the world all the things they love, desire, and enjoy. Though it is still in “invite-only” status, it had an estimated 3.3 million visitors in October 2011 alone, and the number is still climbing.

The desire to earn money online , either through providing products, services, or a combination of the two, plays a major role in the nation’s and even the world’s economy. An article I wrote for an undisclosed client this morning brought a very interesting question to the forefront. Since my husband starts culinary school in the fall, I chose to write an article about how to make a culinary portfolio. Though he doesn’t need one now, he will. This of course got me thinking about his angle, or his microniche in the world of cooking, something like Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals, but something that will make him stand out from the rest of the crowd when the time comes. This of course, also got me thinking about my own portfolio here, my microniche, and what I want it to be. I don’t really have a microniche yet, because I do a wide variety of content and websites. Variety and being able to accommodate a large quantity of people is a good thing, but have a specialized, focused, microniche to offer clients is also a good thing. I’d love for my microniche to become culinary portfolios and restaurant websites to not only support my husband but to also support my own foodie passions. In the mean time, I’ll talk about why it is important to narrow down your own in your online business.

Why a Microniche?

A niche, such as dog breeding has a lot of potential, but it also has a lot of competition, and a lot of subtopics that could be addressed. While reaching the large audience is important, choosing a microniche, or a subtopic related to dog breeding, such as breeding Doberman Pinschers, gives you a more focused topic, which gives you a more focused target audience, more focused keywords, and more than likely less competition. People who want information about how to breed Dobermans may or may not start with a search related to dog breeding in general, but they are looking for specific information other websites may or may not provide. The microniche approach also gives you a better chance of really establishing yourself as an expert in the subject, which helps with your credibility. WIth a more targeted audience, you are more likely to get sales and loyalty from your consumer base.

Do You Know Your Microniche?

It may seem counterproductive for me to ask this question of you, considering I just admitted I do not have mine pinpointed yet, but do you know yours? Think about where your passion lies within your niche. If you can’t find something passionate about it, then you likely shouldn’t spend your time on the niche at all, because your passion shines through to your consumers, and will make a difference in your ability to stick to it. Take a little time to consider what your microniche is, and build or revamp your website and content to match it. The difference in results may just shock you.
