A Knitter's Dream

I had the pleasure of attending a trunk show at Another Yarn in Winchester, Massachusetts this weekend. Despite a New England snow storm, the show was well attended. (Nothing can keep a knitter from her wool.) Sarah Dimond (The Plucky Knitter) was there with her gorgeous yarn. I felt like I was meeting celebrities. I became all shy and couldn't speak. I don't know how I got the courage to ask if I could take a photo, but somehow I did.

There were so many beautiful colors to choose from. It was a real exercise in restraint to not get one of each.

One of my favorite designers, Cecily Glowik MacDonald (Winged Knits) was there with her books and patterns and samples. She was really sweet and signed my copy of Weekend Hats. She was wearing her latest design - Oakwood. It was gorgeous.

Dress to Impress Project

I was recently contacted by Suz Stevenson of the lifestyle bog Well to do You. She asked if I would be willing to donate a scarf from my Etsy shop to her project Dress to Impress. She is hoping her project will inspire and empower women who are returning to the workforce. She'll be wearing the same LL Bean Signature Islesboro Sweater Dress each day in the month of January, but changing it up with different accessories. She'll blog about the look each day and at the end of the month all the accessories will be donated to Dress for Success® Southern Maine, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Of course I said YES. I wanted to share the link to the project with you.

Giacomo's Baby Hat

The only knitting that was done this Christmas was a hat for my grandson. I found this sweet pattern from the Purl Bee website. If you've ever wanted to try Fair Isle knitting this is a great beginner pattern. It is just four colors and the pattern is only 19 rows. I actually knit the hat twice, because the first hat ended up being too small. I used larger needles for the second hat and it fit perfectly.

Details:

Pattern: Giacomo's Baby Hat from the Purl Bee

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Suri Merino (55% Suri Alpaca, 45% Extra Fine Merino)

Colors: Blue, gray, light blue, and dark green

Needles: US 6 and US 7

I used a small Clover Pom-Pom maker in size 1 5/8" for the bigger hat and 1 3/8" for the smaller hat. The directions were confusing, but I found a YouTube video that helped a lot.

I thought I'd share my husband's handiwork for a change. His craft is working with wood especially exotic woods. He has made some beautiful furniture pieces. He designed and made this rocking horse for our grandson.

Sugar Cookies

"While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads..."

This sugar cookie recipe was given to me by a woman in a church organization I used to attend many years ago. Her name was Doris Melvin and she was a wonderful baker and shared many of her recipes with me. This sugar cookie recipe is simple and makes about 5 dozen, so it is perfect for a cookie swap or bake sale.

Ingredients:
1/2 Cup Butter, softened
1/2 Cup Shortening
1 Cup Sugar
1 Egg
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 1/4 Cups Flour
1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
Additional Sugar for Rolling
Icing Recipe and Sprinkles (optional)

In a medium size bowl mix together flour, baking powder and baking soda. Set aside. Cream together butter, shortening and sugar. Add egg and vanilla, mix well. Gradually mix in flour mixture. Shape into 1 inch balls and roll in sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet. Flatten with the bottom of a glass to 1/2 inch thick. Bake in a 350*F oven for 10-12 minutes until slightly browned. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on wire rack.

You can roll the cookies in plain or colored sugar before baking, or ice them after thay are baked and cooled.

Icing Recipe:
1 Cup of Confectioner's Sugar mixed with 1 Tablespoon of milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

Paper Trees

I was inspired to try my hand at making paper trees after seeing these trees in the December issue of Cottages and Bungalows Magazine.

They look like they are made out of pieces of birch. Aren't they beautiful?

There are several versions of paper trees out in blogland (I noticed after making mine) and each one is slightly different. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel (or tree). This is just my version.

Here is how I did it:

Supplies to make one small (9") and one large (12") paper tree:

One 3 7/8” x 8 7/8 “ Styrofoam cone, one 4 7/8” x 11 7/8” Styrofoam cone, eight 12” x 12” sheets of scrapbooking paper, tree topper template, low temp glue sticks, glue gun, pencil, ruler, scissors, pinking shears or paper edgers.

1. Mark wrong side of 7 pieces of scrapbooking paper in a 1” inch by 3” grid. The small tree takes about 2 ½ sheets and the larger tree takes about 4 ½ sheets. The two tree toppers can be cut from one piece of scrapbooking paper.

2. Cut center line with straight scissors and then cut each half down the middle with pinking shears. Each piece of paper will have one decorative edge and one straight edge.

3. Cut each strip at the one inch marked lines.

4. Using a pencil curl each strip by pulling it across the pencil right side up.

5. Starting one inch up from the bottom, begin gluing paper strips to cone overlapping each strip a ¼ inch so that none of the cone shows. Continue in this manner all the way around the cone moving up a half in each time and ending with the last row even with top of cone.

6. Trace the tree topper template onto the scrapbooking paper and cut bottom edges with pinking shears and use straight scissors to cut side strips. Curl strips using pencil. Roll into cone shape overlapping a strip or two and adjusting to how you want it to look on the top of the tree. Glue edge of tree topper and once it is set glue it to the top of the tree.

That is all there is to it!

Decorating with Candy Canes

Not having my Christmas Decorations this year is really making me think outside the box. I'm really trying to think of ways to make it look like Christmas around here, but also trying to incorporate what I already have on hand.

This Christmas tablescape was made by using candy canes and bakers twine.

I used the dried hydrangeas I had on the table, but made them more holiday friendly by adding candy canes around the vase. I've seen this done with lemon leaves and asparagus, so why not candy canes. I put a thick elastic band around the vase to hold the candy canes in place while I slide them under the band and then tied them with a bakers twine bow.

For candles I used egg cups filled with crushed candy canes. I then nestled a tea light into the crushed candies.

At each place setting on top of the napkin there is a monogrammed gift tag tied around a candy cane with bakers twine.

The napkins are on sale at Anthropologie for $3.95 and could be used all year. The green placemats are from Ikea for only $1.99. It took 4 boxes of candy canes at .99 each. A simple and casual tabletop for entertaining over the Holidays.

Poinsettia Pillow Tutorial

Poinsetta Decorative Pillow

My DIY attitude forced me to come up with my own take on this pillow and I thought I'd share the process here.

Supplies needed to make one 16" envelope pillow:
1 Yard of Wool or Linen
¼ Yard of Wool Felt (or 4 - 9” x 12” squares of felt)
16” Pillow Form
7 - ½” bells
1 Skein of DMC Floss in a Coordinating Color
Embroidery Needle
Pencil or Marker for Tracing Leaf Pattern onto Felt
Pins
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Leaf Template

Directions:
Cut a 17” square out of the wool or linen for the front of the pillow. Print leaf template and cut out large and small leaf. Trace 5 large and 5 small leaves onto the wool felt and cut these out. Pin the 5 large leaves in place onto 17” square. Cut 30 inch lengths of the embroidery floss keeping all six strands together. Using a running stitch, stitch down the center of each leaf with the embroidery floss.

It doesn't have to be perfect. I like the effect a little gathering has on the finished leaves. Next, pin the 5 small leaves slightly askew into place and sew these down the center line in the same manner as the large leaves. Finally, sew the bells to the center of the pillow. The top is now finished.

To finish the pillow, cut 2 – 17” x 20” pieces of wool or linen. Fold them in half, so that you have two 17” x 10” pieces and press. Next place the front of the pillow facing up. Line the raw edges of the back pieces up with the raw edges of the front over lapping the folded edges in the middle. Using a ½ seam allowance sew all the way around the out edge of pillow.

Clip corners and turn the pillow to the right side by pulling it through the back opening. Stuff pillow form inside and you are done.

Wool Filled and Monogrammed Glass Ornaments

I don't know how it happened, but after several moves these past few years my heirloom ornaments ended up 300 miles away in the basement of our summer home. I needed a quick and inexpensive way to decorate my tree this year. They do say that necessity is the mother of invention. Can you see the light bulb above my head? Enter Jo-Ann Fabrics . I bought some of their clear glass ornaments. They were on sale $2.99 for EIGHT! No coupon necessary. I bought four packages.

I found some leftover yarn scraps and a knitting needle. I'm going for a gold, silver and bronze theme this year, but any colors would look great.

It couldn't be easier. Remove the metal hook anchor. Stuff the yarn into the glass ornaments. The knitting needle is helpful for stuffing and moving around the yarn inside the glass bulb. (They are delicate and I did break a few by dropping them.) Replace the metal hook anchor and add ribbon for hanging.

I really like the thick wool one the best.

I also bought some glitter style clear stickers for $1.79 (also at Jo-Anns) and made Pottery Barn inspired monogrammed ornaments by just sticking a letter to the outside of the bulb. Super easy. Now I'll have some time to make a few special ornaments and these will fill the tree.

I have a love for pretty much anything vintage, but I especially love things from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I enjoy hunting for these little treasures when I am vacationing in Maine and I have accumulated quite a large collection of items.

I always had it in the back of my mind that it would be fun to have an Etsy Shop. Finally this little dream has come to fruition. I opened my shop this week.

I'll be adding more things each week. It has been fun and I'm a little nervous, but I'm also very excited about it and wanted to share my news with you.

Nefertem

The Nefertem Shawl is a pattern designed by Kirsten Kapur for the Loopy Ewe Spring 2011 Sock Club. It came as a kit and included a beautiful skein of Madelinetosh Sock yarn in the colorway called Midnight Rendezvous. The color is a deep purple-blue with hints of black. It's very pretty in person. This was my first time knitting with Madelinetosh yarn and it did not disappoint.

The shawl is worked from the center top edge and has a lotus motif lace border. It was quick and easy. The crochet edging was a challenge for me, but I conquered it in the end. There is some errata for the crochet edge that can be found here. Unfortunately, I didn't find it until I was done.

Knit while waiting for my power to come back on during Hurricane Irene. It took 3 days to knit the shawl and 6 days for the power to be restored. Ugh.

Tag Blanket Tutorial

I'm crazy about this baby!

I made a tag blanket for my grandson. I can't remember if I told you my step-daughter and her husband gave us our first grandchild in November? Well they did and we are having so much fun being grandparents. He has incredible fine motor skills and he loves to play with the tags on his toys. That got me thinking that he might like a tag blanket. They are so easy to make. I made this one with minky. If you are not familiar with minky it is a soft and cuddly machine washable chenille that is perfect for use in baby blankets.

I'm sure there are a million tutorials on this, but here is my version. It will make a 17 inch square blanket not including the ribbons.

First you will need some supplies:
1/2 yard of minky
1/4 yard each of 16 different ribbons
thread
pins
scissors
sewing machine
tweezers (if you use wire ribbon)

If you use wire ribbon you will want to take out the wire. This is so easy. Just use a tweezer to pull out the wire. It should slide right out. Then cut each ribbon into two pieces. Make them all different lengths so that some ribbons are longer than others.

Cut two 18 inch squares out of the minky.

Fold each ribbon in half and pin the raw edge of ribbon to the edge of the right side of one of the pieces of minky. I pinned 8 different ribbons to each side in varying distances apart starting an inch away from the edges. Ribbons should face inside. (see photo above)

Baste the ribbons down using your sewing machine with a 3/8 seam allowance.

Now put right sides together of the minky squares. Pin together making sure ribbons are inside.

Now, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance machine sew together leaving a 4 inch opening for turning.

Clip all edges and corners leaving a 1/4 inch raw edge. Turn right side out.

Pin the 4 inch opening closed tucking in the raw edge.

Top stitch around entire blanket using a 3/8 inch seam allowance.

Then I machine washed and dried the blanket because I know my grandson will try to eat it. Well it does look like candy.

Homemade Granola Bars

I found a new to me website called My Baking Addiction. What a great name. Jamie shares lots of good recipes and they are not all baked goods. I recently stumbled upon this homemade granola bar recipe and decided to try it.

These granola bars have a simple base of rolled oats, flour, and wheat germ. Brown sugar, honey, cinnamon and vanilla are the sweeteners. An egg and some vegetable oil bind it all together.

Dried cherries, slivered almonds and Ghirardelli dark chocolate chips add to the yum factor.

They are baked just until the edges turn golden.

These granola bars are moist and chewy and I love the tart cherry and dark chocolate flavor. They are the perfect afternoon pick me up or on the run breakfast.

I wrapped them in parchment paper and they are ready to grab. This recipe is simple, delicious and makes 24 bars.

Note: I used the Spark People recipe calculator to figure out the calories and came up with 180 calories per serving.

Simplicity 3835

It all started when I found a piece of lace at a little antique shop for a dollar. I wasn't sure what I would do with it, but I couldn't leave it there. It was too pretty.
It was a DOLLAR!

I also had some Kokka fabric that I had bought at Purl Soho IN A SCRAP BAG NO LESS on a visit to NY last fall. It's a 90% cotton and 10% linen blend. Perfect for a summer top.

I had some lace leftover from another project. It was white, but I soaked it in coffee and then rinsed it to match the lace panel.

Voila!

Details:
Pattern: Simplicity 3835 - view 3. It is a Built by Wendy pattern that I have used before to make the tunic. It's a really flexible pattern with dress, tunic and top lengths and sleeve variations.
Fabric: Kokka, a blend of 90% cotton and 10% linen. I can't find a link to it, but it is slightly sheer.
Mods: The lace is hand sewn into place on the sleeves and bodice.
New Techniques: I'm trying to learn how to make a more professional looking garment, so I used a french seam. This is a good tutorial for making a french seams from Colette Patterns.

Camp Pine Needle

I bought these herb markers from an etsy shop called Camp Pine Needle back in January and have been waiting to use them ever since. My step daughter told me about them. They are made by her sister-in-law who is a freelance illustrator. They are a good size - 14 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide and are safe for outdoor use.

I finally found the perfect container to plant my indoor herb garden. It is a bread box from the 1950's. I love the green plaid. I love the idea of having fresh herbs available to cook with in the summer. Bring on summer. I'm ready.

Picnik

I've been having so much fun playing with textures on Picnik. It's the next best thing to actually painting a picture. I wish I could paint, but I digress.

I found Picnik through Flickr which is the site I use to upload photos to my blog. Picnik is an online photo editing service. Some of the editing features are free on Flickr, but you can upgrade to the Premium Package for $24.95 a year. (I'm not trying to sell it. I just thought this might be useful information.) This package offers all kinds of editing tools and is user friendly. I mean seriously, If I can use it anyone can.

One of my favorite tools to use is the texture tool. For example, here is a photo of the shed in our back yard in Maine.

Not that exciting. Right? After playing with the exposure and adding some texture this is what I came up with.

There are lots of textures to choose from like peeling paint, canvas, and water droplets to name a few.

Here are more before and after photos:

A pond we used to live near. I loved how the water was so still that the trees were reflecting in it.

I first over exposed the photo and then added the canvas texture. You can really see the canvas texture in this one.

This was a boat that was sailing in Blue Hill Bay called the Schooner Heritage. It looked so beautiful in all it's glory.

I still have a lot to learn, but it's been fun and that is all that counts. I really want to invest in Photoshop some day which has a more difficult learning curve, but you can really do some amazing editing. Ahhh... someday.

Power Drill, Staple Gun and Dinning Room Chairs... Oh my!

We've moved three times over the last year and a half, so trying to make each new house feel like home has been somewhat of a challenge. Our last house we lived in had white woodwork and pretty gray walls. This new house we just moved into has a lot of dark wood trim and textured walls. It almost has a lake house retreat feeling. If you know what I mean? It has an open floor plan, so I've been trying to create a cohesive space. I don't want to spend a lot of money. One of my solutions was to recover the dinning room chairs. I've always wanted to do this. I've seen it done on the Home and Garden channels many times.

It's just as easy as it looks. I used a hounds tooth fabric in chocolate brown. It bought it from House Fabric. It was only $9.95/yard compared to $75.00 at Joann Fabrics and they shipped it quickly.

I was happy with the end result and I got to use a staple gun and power drill which is always a plus.

I bought the curtains at Target. They are not really curtains. They are 84 inch table cloths. I used drapery clips . Target has some Dwell Studio table cloths that would be beautiful as curtains too.

I have found a place for the framed butterflies at each house. This is a fun project and great way to use Anthropologie catalogs. They still look pretty good after two years.

This cabinet had really ugly wooden handles. The screw holes were not standard so I had a hard time finding replacement handles. Finally I found some that worked. They were $10.00 a piece, but they made the cabinet look so much better.

I have it filled with colorful mid century dishes. They make me happy.

I'm using a small antique cupboard as a bar for the time being. I think it works.

I think the recovered chairs pull the room together.

The good, the bad and the ugly details:
I used a Quince and Co. yarn which is always a good thing. Tern is a wool/silk blend. It has a slightly tweedy look and beautiful drape. The pattern called for 420 yards, but I had read that knitters were running out of yarn. Two skeins of Tern was 442 yards so I thought I might be okay, but I ran out of yarn with 3 rows left including the bind off row. I thought about ordering another skein, but I just wanted to finish the shawl and I couldn't bring myself to buy another whole skein for three rows.

The Last Three Rows:
I found some finger weight leftovers in my stash. I was worried about the shawl looking granny-ish so I tried to find complimentary colors. I knit two rows with some leftover String Theory hand dyed yarn in a blue color and then bound off with Berroco Alpaca Light in a green color.

There is errata for this pattern. Despite having the correct charts I still found the pattern confusing. That is why I love the Ravelry network. I never could have made this shawl without the help of members that took notes to make things easier for the next knitter. Thank You

Solstice Cardigan

Details: This sweater is knit from the top down with very few seams. (One joining the collar to the front and then the pockets.) The cable detail is done without a cable needle which makes it slightly easier, and the waist shaping is down with a rib stitch pattern. I wasn't sure about adding the pockets, but they won out in the end and I'm glad. I was nervous about getting them sewn on evenly. I think I've tried almost every Quince and Co. yarn and they are all wonderful for different reasons. The Osprey used in the sweater is 100% wool, nice and soft, and has beautiful stitch definition.

Snow Flower Cardigan

I saw this cardigan while perusing the ModCloth website and was inspired to make my own version.

Fall Flowers Cardigan

I started with a plain cardigan and t-shirt.

Traced leave shapes onto the t-shirt and cut them out.

Sewed the leaves down using a straigh stich down the center line.

Satin stitched the centers of the flowers.

That is all there is to it.

Just a quick post to tell you about this hat. It is knit from leftover yarn in my stash. I wanted to go out and buy new yarn. I wanted to buy the yarn that was called for in the pattern, but it was snowing, and the Governor had called a state of emergency. That is what stash yarn is suppose to be all about. At least that is what I tell myself when I'm buying it. Emergencies. The kind that keep you from getting to a yarn shop.

Yarn used: Bristol Yarns Gallery King George in blue, Cascade 220 in green, Rowan Summer Tweed in white, Berroco Ultra Alpaca in brown, Cascade Quatro in red, Patons Angora Bamboo in charcoal, and String Theory Merino Sport in Mustard.

Details:
This sweater was a really fast knit. Maybe it was because I was in the car as a passenger a lot between Christmas and New Years, so I had many hours to knit, but this sweater worked up super quick. It is knit from the top down with raglan sleeves and waist shaping. The collar can be buttoned up or worn open. There is a fun pattern detail on the front. I used Quince and Co. Puffin in the color pomegranate. This yarn is a slightly felted bulky weight yarn that gives beautiful pattern definition.

This scarf looks more complicated to knit than it was. I love the simple garter center and the way it contrasts with the lace edging. The yarn I used is Chickadee from Quince and Co. It is a soft and springy yarn and comes in beautiful colors. It's 100% American Wool that is spun in New England. I highly recommend trying it, and checking out the Quince and Co. web site. There you will find lots of great patterns and yarns. I'm planning on making this sweater after the holidays.
