I've recently been made aware that someone in Costa Rica is charging credit cards and using "Lucky Star Desings, LLC" as the name of the company charging the cards.

1. I am not an LLC, but a sole proprietorship
2. It is spelled Lucky Star Designs, not Desings
3. I am in DFW area of Texas, not Costa Rica
4. I provide a receipt via email for every credit card transaction I do.

If you have been charged by this fraudulent means, I assure you it did not originate from Lucky Star, they are just unfortunately using our name.

Feel free to have your bank contact me if there are any questions. As of right now, I've had about 5 individuals contact me about these charges and dozens of hits for "lucky star desings, llc", so I am assuming it's happening a lot more.

Do you have a "FANCY" camera (DSLR Canon, Nikon, Sony or other)? Are you still shooting in auto and disappointed with the images you are getting?

It's time to stop treating your camera like a point and shoot and take your photography to the next level!This five-week course is an exploration into the art of DSLR photography. It will be approached from both a technical and an esthetic viewpoint. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the advanced options available to them through the use of digital photography.

The computer has changed the way that conventional photography is now being produced. This course will enable students to effectively and efficiently, use and understand a digital camera design for high quality image making. Emphasis will be placed upon developing sufficient skills for the student to become self-reliant in the following:

Proper handling and operation of the Digital SLR Camera.
Calculating exposures under different lighting conditions.
Understanding the technical differences among various lens.
Understanding the use and operations of the white balance and ISO functions.
Understanding and using depth of field and motion creatively.
Applying the elements of composition and subject lighting (indoor and outdoor).
Setting up studio lighting and/or using off-camera flash effectively.

Prerequisite: Students are required to bring a DSLR camera and lens (with adjustable shutter and aperture) and a memory card. The camera must be eight megapixels or higher.

Classes start on September 20th and run thru October 18th, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Today is Thursday. Thankful Thursday.

Today is finally the last day of the school year for my munchkins (insert whoops of laughter and glee). And the 30 day countdown until I do Photography and Design full-time (insert LOUDER whoops of laughter and glee).

We are thankful for:

Nate's A Honor Roll certificate.
Jenna's commendation on 3rd Grade TAKS Testing (given for a perfect Reading score and "commended" on Math).
A beautiful dance recital by The Dance Space last weekend (Jenna was beautiful).
Great clients and a thriving business.
The start of a fun and full summer of birthday parties, baby showers and weddings (more gleeful whooping).

Speaking of birthday and other fun summer events... I've had so much fun designing invitations to several parties and events for this year. One is a FAB surprise party (but since the party is in July, I can't share the beautiful design with you yet. Soon I promise! Shhhhh!).

Wall Art Wednesday - Inspiration by Denton and DFW photographer and designer Lucky Star Designs and Photography

I have been giving my Facebook fans little teasers of my new series called "Wall Art Wednesday".

I think it's so important when you have professional pictures made of your family, that you find a unique and aesthetically pleasing way to display them in your home. Don't just slap some frames up randomly and expect to have it convey the emotion that you wanted it to the day you did your portrait session. Your display should have purpose and convey your own personal style.

I am in LOVE with a new social bookmarking site called Pinterest. It has really helped me hone my own style and inspires me everyday to perfect it and put it into action in my own life, whether that be my work, my designs, my photography, my cooking or my home. In an essence, I am trying to create my own personal brand. I've decided to share some of my favorite finds with you each week to help you as well.

Do you ever find yourself drawn to the same colors, prints or styles when decorating your home or buying clothes and shoes? That is your brain's subconscious effort to "brand" yourself. You have a personal style whether you realize it or not. The thing to ask yourself is: "Is it purposeful? And does it reflect who I really am?"

Wall Art Wednesday is my way of bringing a little bit of inspiration to each of my readers so they can begin to narrow their own personal vision when deciding to display their art and portraits in their home or office.

Like what you see in one of these posts? Contact me and I can consult with you on how to make it happen in your home or office or place of business. My contact list of referrals include frame vendors, print labs and other retailers that I work with on printing and design options that can be tailored to any style you want.

Here are some of my favorite wall groupings that stuck with me as unique. You can click on the pictures to be taken to the source (since these are not my original pictures or ideas). They are great for providing some visual inspiration to get your own personal style kick-started.

Under the Cabinet Photo Grouping

I love the original placement of this photo grouping. A photo ledge mounted to the wall behind your counter-space in your kitchen or office or craft room. I would recommend mounting on foam-board or masonite and doing a lustre coating for protection over the pictures if you went this route (The original source recommends frame-less clip frames. Either would work). And best part, it's affordable to change out the pictures every few months to keep it current and fresh. No need for frames or matting... just a ledge and beautifully printed pictures --- What an impact it makes!

These examples are a great way to display a wide variety of images in a spot that is visible to everyone in the home but rarely decorated. Of course the wainscoting in the first photo helps too. I just love seeing family portraits displayed in a high traffic area like this. The grouping tells a story of this family... its history, its roots, its progression. This is a great way to combine grandma's old snapshots with pictures of you and your family growing up and current portraits of your own children.

If you are interested in a wall display like this, I can help you with photo restoration of old delicate snapshots, converting your family pictures into black and white or sepia images to match and then re-size, print and frame to make a visual statement. I really wish every home had a wall like this with generations of pictures included.

Mixed Media Photo Groupings

This is a beautiful way of bringing personality to your home. Do this in a hallway, above your couch or your fireplace mantel... anywhere you have a large unused wall. This looks great above a buffet table or credenza as well. I like how the different shapes and sizes of photos are formatted and spaced so that they are essentially one large piece of art. The "S" in the middle provides some aesthetic interest and displays the family's initial. You could also include other media like a shadow box with mementos, a piece of artwork made of iron, like a scroll or a large skeleton key, or include a family quote or other saying painted on a block of wood. See some more examples of this below.

More about why today is special:

Shelly Pickle was only 15 years old when she left us. She was my best friend. She had a contagious laugh... full of joy and wit. Her smile could light up a room and she had no idea how beautiful she was to so many of us that called her "friend". Because she always encouraged my creativity and was one of my biggest cheerleaders, I pursued writing, photography and art with a passion. She helped me believe in my abilities and encouraged me in her quiet way. (Even if she made fun of the "big" words I always used).

With each milestone in my life, I mourned her loss again, wishing she had been there with me at prom, graduation, and on to college. I have found myself wondering what her children would have looked like and what kind of mom she would have been. I know she is in a happy place with Jesus by her side and the angels as her friends.

If I had to guess, she is probably keeping them all in stitches with her self-depreciating humor. I still quote her on a bad hair day and say "My hair looks like CA-CA today." God I miss that girl. :)

I am just grateful for the years she was in my life and the influence she had on it. I will never forget you PickleSue. xoxo.

Stealing His Heart - I Heart Faces Challenge Submission - Denton Area Photographer

For this week's "Hearts" challenge over at I Heart Faces, I had to use this picture... it's in a collage in my living room and one of my all time favorites.

These two have been betrothed since they grew in their mommies wombs. He may still be a "Mama's Boy", but someday this sweet girl will truly steal his heart I have no doubt.

(Sailor Rae is my best friend's little girl and this sweet boy is my son Nate... we were pregnant at the same time and had the two of them within weeks of each other. Our fondest hope is that they will get married and give us gorgeous blond hair, blue-eyed grandchildren someday). The marriage contract is still in negotiations. (teehee)

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge: "Innocent Wonder" - Denton Area Photographer

This week's theme over at I Heart Faces is "Innocent Wonder".

I had a really hard time picking this one, as I have photographed so many beautiful children over the years (mine included). Being such a broad theme, so many of my photos could qualify.

I picked this one because it reminds me so much of what it felt like when you are little and trying to imagine what you will be when you "grow up." I had a crazy series of potential careers as a child, most of them creative in nature, so it's no wonder Photography called to me once I was in college. I wanted to be a fashion designer, a "Solid Gold" dancer, a writer, a poet, an actress, an artist, a journalist, and so many others... the list goes on an on.

This little boy was fascinated with firemen and firetrucks, so when we were allowed to jump into one at the end of a session one day, I wasn't prepared technically (no flash or strobes), but I was prepared to capture the joy of pretending, just for a moment, that he was a fireman. And the wonder and awe that overtook him as he had that hat on and sat in the seat was touching to witness.

So the portrait isn't my technical best, but it's still one of my favorites. Innocent Wonder. Yep, perfectly describes what I see here.

I've been taking a hiatus from photo blogging during the holidays, as I prepared for upcoming mini-sessions and a Photoshop class at the end of the month. January is the time most photographers either struggle to find work, or sit back and enjoy the quiet time and review what they have done in the past year.

2010 was a success for me. I watched my business grow and take off in a way that surprised me. I went through 3 different camera bodies and improved my technical skills and stretched my creative outlets. I am proud of the work I did last year. And I can't wait to see what 2011 has in store for me.

While trying to go through pictures from last year, I came across this one from a snow day in February. I love it so much, as it encompasses the pure abandon that a child can have. As I look at this picture of my son, I can actually remember what it feels like to tilt your head back as far as it goes, squeezing your eyes tight and sticking your tongue out tentatively, hoping that you can feel the tiny snowflake as it drops into your mouth... and melts. The joy that catching one snowflake on your tongue is greater than a whole bowl of ice cream.

So as half the country sees yet another snow storm rip through, go re-live that abandon for one moment. Step outside and catch a snow flake on your tongue. Less calories than ice cream and more fulfilling than you can imagine.

By the end of the session, I want you to feel like you’ve had a surprisingly fun and enjoyable experience in front of the camera. Most of our clients say they are surprised at how fast the time went by, and how much fun they had.

Body Type

You don’t have to have the so-called “perfect” body to look absolutely stunning in our Boudoir images. As a matter of fact, most of our clients have the same complaints about their bodies as you probably do. Not to worry, our job is to minimize certain attributes and maximize others. Our goal is to make you thrilled with the final images. Lighting, camera angles, and post-processing all come together to help you feel your most attractive.

Session Location

Boudoir sessions can take place in your home or even in a luxurious hotel suite. It’s all up to you. The most important factor in determining location is to make sure it is comfortable, and that there are as few distractions as possible. We’ll go over options for locations as no two photo shoots are the same.

What to Bring

You can bring a specific outfit or lingerie item, or several options to pick and choose from during the session. We do not provide lingerie so you must bring your own. Unless you would like us to provide you with a makeup artist and/or hair stylist, we recommend you come with hair styled and makeup already applied.

Your session will be edited and posted online within 5-7 days and your print order typically takes 5 days from the time you place your order and your final payment clears. I know most of you are trying to get these done by valentines day, so I will try and shorten this production time as much as possible and work with you quickly to get everything edited, approved and ordered.

This is my favorite time of year... the holiday decorations and lights, the gift-giving, celebrating our Lord's birth... just the feeling of hope and thankfulness that surrounds us. Especially when we are with family.

Recently I was thinking about how much I enjoy what I do. And I have to say, my favorite is shooting children and families. There is something about capturing this tiny moment in the history of a family and knowing that 30 years from now these same kids that I am making funny voices for will be showing these pictures to THEIR kids someday to make THEM smile.

The fashions and hairstyles may change and cause them to cringe, but the feelings these pictures will evoke in a few decades will be the same as they are now... love, gratitude and peace. Family does that.

The Edwards family is no different. Samuel and Alex give off a warmth and a joy that are a huge reflection of their parent's love for them. Seeing them act silly and loving in that brother/sister way is an honor as a photographer, because I know Mom and Dad will treasure these moments for many years.

I am always honored when a client calls me a second time for portraits... it means I am doing something right. I am grateful when they refer me to friends. And I am TOUCHED when they do both over and over again like Andee does.

Gorgeous Family Session in Grapevine - Denton County Photographer

Ask anyone that knows me and you will know I LOVE referrals. Most of my clients are from someone who told someone about me and my photography. There is NO better compliment for a photographer than that right there.

So when I got a call from Casey, who was referred by another client of mine, I was so excited to meet her and her sweet family. First we met for my halloween mini sessions about a month ago and I absolutely fell in love with her boy and girl (batman and kitty from the halloween mini-sessions I posted a few weeks ago).

I was even MORE excited when she booked me for their family holiday session before she had even seen proofs from the halloween session.

Who doesn't love a GORGEOUS and PHOTOGENIC family? Well, as a photographer I am especialy fond of fun and engaging families like this one.

We headed to the Grapevine Train Depot for our holiday session and what a fun time we had. Kids LOVE trains, and mom's love kids that smile... and dads love mom's that aren't stressed and happy. EVERYONE loves pretty pictures. So we were all happy that day.

Thanks Casey for letting me spend such a fun afternoon with your family. I hope you love your pictures as much as I do!

A Mama and her Boys - Denton area photographer

I believe God puts people into your life for a reason. No really. I do. Some people teach you something and leave as quickly as they came and some are meant to bringing something to your life to be cherished and nurtured.

Don't worry, I am not going all religious fanatic on you. But I do believe that once in a while you meet someone and they just bring something special into your life and it's meant to be. I feel that way about my new (but good) friend Karly. (And the sweet men in her life).

She is young and vibrant and beautiful (you can tell that from the pictures of course), but she is also an amazing mom to three GORGEOUS boys and love of a sweet guy Rocky. I feel so blessed to have met her when she started babysitting my two little ones a few summers ago... and more blessed that a friendship grew out of it.

When she asked me to take pictures of her WILD crew... I couldn't WAIT! I had the honor of taking Chance's newborn pictures a few months back and it's so fun to see him grow from behind the camera.

EVEN MORE fun to hang out with them ... as you can see from the happiness that glows from this family.

Thank you for letting me capture your crazy life surround by your men, Karly. It was LOL fun and silly and a JOY. Don't ever stop being a wonderful mom, friend, and woman.
