Expand your Possibilities! A 4-shaft draft on your 8-shaft Loom. Part 2–Blog Post

Recently, Michele wrote about how to simplify a complicated 4-shaft draft by expanding that draft to 8-shafts. Click here to see that blog. This week, she wants to go more in depth about changing a 4-shaft Rosepath draft for the Seaside Towels into an 8-shaft draft that is easy to weave.

I wanted to convert the sweet 4-shaft Rosepath draft for the Seaside Towels into a warp with more versatility for my 8-shaft loom. I especially wanted to add double weave hems, which I knew I could easily do with an 8-shaft threading. I can do this because the 4-shaft Rosepath threading has 8 ends in each threading repeat.

Let’s go through the process together! The original 4-shaft Rosepath draft is shown on the right.

Write Out the Original Shaft Order

I begin by making a table with the full repeat of the original threading in the left-hand column. The first thread is on Shaft 1, the second on Shaft 2, the third thread is on Shaft 1 again. The next thread is on Shaft 4, then Shaft 3, Shaft 2, Shaft 3 and Shaft 4. This is the entire 8-end repeat.

Start the New 8-shaft Order

Now I write the 8-shaft threading in the right-hand column and start to color code the shafts in the 8-shaft version.

The first and second end are threaded the same for both drafts. Shaft 1 is yellow and Shaft 2 is green. To expand the threading to 8-shafts, instead of threading the third end on a shaft I have already used, I spread things out. The third end is threaded on Shaft 3 instead of Shaft 1. To make sure I get the same 4-shaft pattern, every time I lift Shaft 1 now, I also must lift Shaft 3. So, both Shaft 1 and Shaft 2 are colored yellow.

Ends 4 and 5

The fourth end is threaded on Shaft 4, the same as in the original draft. Shaft 4 is colored purple.

The fifth end was threaded on Shaft 3 but will now be threaded on Shaft 5. The threads on Shaft 3 in the original have been reassigned to Shaft 5. The new threading has already used Shaft 3 for the second end originally on Shaft 1, so all the ends originally on Shaft 3 are now on Shaft 5. This may be the most difficult mental step. Those threads are colored blue.

Ends 6, 7 and 8

Thread the 6th end of the original draft on Shaft 6. It was originally on Shaft 2, so Shaft 2 and Shaft 6 will be paired and colored green.

Thread the next end on Shaft 7. It was originally on Shaft 3, so Shaft 5 and Shaft 7 will be paired and colored blue.

The last thread in the repeat of the original 4-shaft draft will be threaded on Shaft 8. Because it was originally on Shaft 4, Shafts 4 and 8 are paired together and both are colored purple.

Written Differently, But Saying the Same Thing:

Note: Even though the fifth end was on Shaft 3 in the 4-shaft draft, in the 8-shaft draft, you don’t use it when you would have used Shaft 3, it lifts only on Shaft 5. The third end of the repeat has been reassigned to Shaft 5.

Now to Change the Tie up!

Treadle 1:

In the original tie up, Treadle 1 lifts Shaft 1 and 2.
In the new draft, Shaft 1 is paired with Shaft 3 and Shaft 2 is paired with Shaft 6.
So, in the 8-shaft tie up, Treadle 1 is tied to Shafts 1, 3, 2, 6.

Treadle 2:

In the original tie up, Treadle 2 lifts Shafts 1 and 4.
In the new draft, Shaft 1 is paired with Shaft 3 and Shaft 4 is paired with Shaft 8.
So, in the 8-shaft tie up, Treadle 2 is tied to Shafts 1, 3, 4, 8.

Treadle 3:

In the original tie up, Treadle 3 lifted Shafts 3 and 4.
Here is that difficult leap – Shaft 3 in the old draft HAS MOVED TO SHAFT 5 and is paired with Shaft 7 and Shaft 4 is paired with Shaft 8.
So, in the 8-shaft tie up, Treadle 3 is tied to shafts 4, 5, 7, and 8.

Treadle 4:

In the original tie up, Treadle 4 lifted Shafts 2 and 3.
In the new draft, Shaft 2 is paired with Shaft 6 and again Shaft 3 in the old draft HAS MOVED TO SHAFT 5 and is paired with Shaft 7.
So, in the 8-shaft tie up, Treadle 4 is tied to Shafts 2, 5, 6, and 7.

Shown below are the original 4-shaft draft and the new 8-shaft draft. You can see from the drawdown that the treadling and the cloth look the same. In the 8-shaft draft, I have tied up Treadles 5-8 to allow me to weave my Doubleweave hems.

But Wait, There is Always More…

With this 8-shaft straight twill threading I can change my tie-up and weave any other structure that can be woven on a straight twill threading.

Or Shafts 1-4 and Shafts 5-7 could weave differently.

The possibilities become almost endless. Just be sure to put on a long enough warp!!!

She has found that she can expand her options with her warp, simplify the threading and treadling, or give the warp threads room to spread out when she expands a draft to more shafts. As we embark on a new year of learning, we want to share what Michele’s learned with you.

Turn Your 8-Shaft (Or 16 or 24-Shaft) Loom Into A 4-Shaft Loom!

Huh?? Why would I do that? Madelyn van der Hoogt would be horrified! She tells her students to consider the shaft-poor weavers, starved for more patterning options. Kind of like cleaning your plate!

Because more shafts equal more options!

Why would I want to start with a 4-shaft draft and put it on more shafts? Lots of reasons. The first I encountered was to give the threads more space to move around, as in tightly sett Repp Weave. Sometimes I don’t have enough heddles on Shafts 1-4 to do the threading. We all know musical heddles isn’t anyone’s favorite! Or sometimes the threading is complicated and hard to follow. Sometimes I’d like to be able to weave something different from the threading. Robyn Spady’s Extreme Warp Makeover workshop takes this to, well, the extreme. Check it out! Sometimes I want to weave a 4-shaft pattern from a book or magazine article (like the Big Wrap Beach Blanket) or in a class (like Jennifer Moore’s amazing Double Rainbow Online Class) but I’d like more options. What if I don’t like the structure, or weaving it is a pain or one of a dozen other complaints. I use more shafts and have more options. It will probably simplify threading and/or treadling.

If you want to expand your 4-shaft pattern onto more shafts there are a few simple rules. First, if I thread what was on Shaft 1 on Shaft 1 and Shaft 5, I need to do the same thing with Shaft 5 that I do with Shaft 1. Every time. Second, the number of shafts I need is either the full threading repeat or a multiple of the repeat.

This All Becomes Clearer When We Do It.

I think the simplest version of this is a 4-shaft straight twill expanded to 8-shafts. The original draft is threaded on Shafts 1,2,3,4 and then repeated. I know I can expand this to any multiple of the threading repeat of 4 threads. In the expanded 8-shaft draft, the second set of threads, originally repeated on Shafts 1,2,3,4 is now threaded on Shafts 5,6,7,8.

To make this easier to visualize I’ve put this into a color-coded chart:

Let’s Do This Again. Practice Makes Perfect!

Expanding a 4-shaft Point Twill to More Shafts.

A 4-shaft point twill threading has 6 ends in each threading repeat. This means I can expand it to 6 shafts. Or 12 or 18 or 24, etc.

A 4-shaft point twill can be rewritten onto 6 shafts:

Just like before, I’ve color coded the ends in the threading to help make it clearer visually.

Now Make The Treadling Easy:

Now that I have simplified (maybe say expanded instead of simplified…) the threading, I can also change the treadling to a straight treadling, like the threading and make the fabric both simpler to thread and to weave. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on Treadle 3 in a point twill and not remembered which way I was going!!! This fixes that.

There Are So Many Places To Go From Here!

Take An 8-Shaft Point Twill, with a14-end threading repeat. Expand it to 14-shafts!

I can convert any threading into a draft using more shafts if the number of ends in the threading repeat is equal to the number of shafts I have to work with. This technique can go so far beyond what I have been doing here with 4-shafts. That is the explosion of infinite possibilities I can’t wait to continue to explore!

Teal–Lunatic Color of 2026! Blog Post

2026…What Wild and Colorful Adventures are Waiting for Us?

At the changing of the year, we Lunatics wait eagerly for the big color predictors to put out their color forecasts for the year. For 2026, Pantone chose Cloud Dancer, a soft white that is “a whisper of tranquility and peace in a noisy world” and WGSN chose Transformative Teal, a color with “a sense of freshness, calm, and restoration”. We can all use both tranquility and restoration!

Because we get to be Lunatics and do what we want, we Lunatics have thrown ourselves behind the color Teal and are declaring that Teal will be our Lunatic Color for 2026! As 2025 was the Lunatic Year of Navy, we have marked 2026 as the Lunatic Year of Teal. This corresponds perfectly with where we are in the shop… we just received a shipment of Teal Lyte Hemp Yarn, and we are reveling in the color as we get it wound onto cones. Transformative energy!

The color Teal gives us transformative energy! It makes us want to go places! Perhaps the energy will take us to the beach to see the gorgeous Caribbean waters, the lively colored surf boards or the hint of teal in the collar of a joyous dog bounding along the beach. Perhaps the energy will take us to our looms to make a blanket for our son, or a scarf for our best friend. Perhaps the energy will take us to the market to shop for a dinner party with our family. Who knows where it will take us? The New Year always seems so full of potential energy!

What Color is Teal?

Teal can be bright or gray, blue or green. The difference between the hue of Teal yarn in the 8/2 and 8/4 Maurice Brassard unmercerized cotton yarns and the Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarns is quite startling. Obviously, the name Teal can mean a wide variety of hues.

It can also be a light value or a dark value. It really can transform and become something spectacular when you weave with it. The Teal in our Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton and Lyte Hemp Yarns are a medium value yarn with great brilliance. Shown to the right is the backside of the Teal card from our Playing with Color Card set. You can see that Teal is a medium value yarn with a value of 30. You could use it with Bleached White, and it will appear to be the darker color, or use it with Navy and it will appear to be the lighter color.

Waves and Whales’ Tails.

Now we have thoughts of waves and maybe whales’ tails dancing in our heads. And we want to play with the value of teal and watch it transform our weaving! Let's make weaving drafts!

Undulating twills have a lot of movement, similar to the ocean. They are easy and fun to make in weaving software. First, the draft in black and white. Love those waves! Next, adding color: Teal in the warp and Navy in the weft. Teal is certainly the lighter color! The draft has a fun nautical feel to it! And finally, just to shake things up, check out the second draft with White added to the threading. A warp made of alternating white and teal in the warp with a solid Navy weft. That additional white sure added a lot of energy to the design! Not sure which we like better.

12 Days of Customer Photos – 2025 Blog Post

For over 30 years, we have had the privilege to supply high quality yarns to you in the artisan community. As we ship out each order, it is a bit like sending our children out into the world to become new and interesting creations! And we like to hear from our kids to see what they are up to!

As a result, for the last three years, we have put together a social media series we call “12 Days of Customer Photos.” We ask you to submit photos of designs that you have created with our yarns. It is always inspiring and absolutely one of our favorite times of the year! We love seeing the projects you’ve created! Not only do you inspire us Lunatics, but by letting us share your photos with the world, you inspire the whole community! Let’s look at this year’s submissions!

The First Day

Peggy Koeppel submitted this photo of her Doubleweave Shawl. For this project, she wove with 20/2 Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarn. Look how those colors pop!

The Second Day

Karen Driscoll wove these 2 towels on two separate warps. For both towels, she used our American Maid naturally colored unmercerized yarn. The first picture is a 4-shaft Huck Lace pattern with stripes of all the American Maid colors. The second picture is an 8-shaft twill block pattern with Natural White and Light Brown yarns. Those towels with soft natural colors are beautiful!

The Third Day

Ann Redmond made these Summer Garden Kitchen Towels out of 8/2 Maurice Brassard cotton yarn! We love her color placement and Twill Stripes pattern! Those colors really sing!

The Fourth Day

Check out this colorful Wall Hanging created by Lois Stevens! She used 5/2 Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarn and a pattern by Janet Dawson. What a beautiful way of bringing all these colors together Lois!!!

The Fifth Day

Robin Lynde knocked it out of the park with her Sunflower Shawl, made from 5/2 Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarn! Her color blending of these bright colors makes the fabric look so warm and inviting!

The Sixth Day

Linda Gettmann went wild weaving these Turned Taquete Towels with 10/2 Tubular Spectrum Mercerized Cotton Yarn. We love the uniqueness of each one. Thanks for the inspiration, Linda!!

The Seventh Day

Beth Wintroub went beyond the basics of creating a color gamp! She went and turned it in to a pillow! Here she is proudly showing it off at the Boulder Guild sale. Great job Beth!

The Eighth Day

Janene Driscoll took the Double Rainbow Doubleweave workshop with Jennifer Moore and created a beautiful sampler on 16-shafts. She went a step further and created this lovely bag. It is currently on display at her local art gallery. This bag is stunning!!

The Ninth Day

Jinks Hunter doesn't let small spaces stop her from weaving! She wove this awesome Gradient Napkin on her rigid heddle loom as a gift for her guild's napkin exchange! 10/2 Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarn on her rigid heddle loom. A little over 20 people participated in the event and all went home with smiles and a napkin made just for them!

The Tenth Day

Michael Bergen wove these matching suspenders and instrument strap with purpose. He is a part of a dance troupe, and their colors are pink, raspberry, and white so he made the instrument straps and suspenders with Tubular Spectrum Mercerized Cotton Yarn in 5 Red, White, and Coral. Nicely done Michael!!

The Eleventh Day

Jaimee Veronneau Roberts knows her way around color placement!! She wove these visually stunning napkins out of Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarn. Her inspiration was her children's favorite colors, family order, and her kitchenware!

The Twelfth Day

Penny Garner is weaving a tessellating triangles pattern with a twist: She used a 10/2 Gray Matter Gamp as her warp, and 5 Blue Green as her weft yarn. The combination makes the emerging triangles pop! That warp is stunning!

Bonus Day

Bonus Day! Michael Sebald was excited to weave with hemp and cotton to revamp his kitchen table with bright colors! With two Bumberet Bitty Bits Napkin Kits, plus a little extra Lyte Hemp yarn, he was able to make placemats, a table runner, napkins, and mug rugs! Awesome job Michael!

Shrink Me! Working with Elastic Yarns. Blog Post.

When we acquired the GevolveYarns collection, we were astonished by the variety of yarns. Thick and thin, smooth and bumpy, yarns made from paper, and yarns made from silk. And then there were the active yarns. Crepes, stainless steel yarns, yarns that could be heat set and elastic yarns. Elastic yarns are a specialized type of yarn that contain elastic fibers, allowing the yarn to stretch and recover its original shape. Elastics can create lovely texture in your fabrics that otherwise couldn’t be achieved. Katzy has been using our elastic yarns and wants to share what she has learned.

Elastic fibers are typically made of polyurethane and there are several brands or chemical names associated with these elastic fibers: Lycra®, Spandex and elastane. Lycra® is a brand name while Spandex and elastane are the generic names. They are all roughly equivalent in their elastic properties.

Oh, So Skinny! Pair Them!

The elastics that we stock are thin yarns. In addition to using them singly, they pair well with other yarns such as cotton, wool, and hemp. Don’t be afraid to mix them with your favorite yarn and see how they add texture. Our Simply Irresistible Scarves (designed from the ideas of Denise Kovnat in her book “Weaving Outside the Box, 12 Projects for Creating Dimensional Cloth”) have elastic cotton and 20/2 mercerized cotton for weft in the center section. Those yarns scrunch up when the scarves are washed. And the texture that you get from the loops of cotton is lovely!

Watch What Happens When It Gets Wet!

While weaving with elastic yarns, the fabric is flat on the loom. A sizing on the yarn prevents it from being too lively before it is washed. So weaving is easy. The magical shrinkage happens when you put the yarn in water after the project comes off the loom. You can see how much shrinkage happens when the fabric is washed in the section that has elastic versus the section that doesn't have elastic yarn!

Weave structures with floats work great with elastic yarns. Those floats provide space for the shrinkage. Structures like deflected doubleweave, spaced warps, honey comb all work well with elastics. If you use elastic yarns with structures that do not have floats, the elastic yarns will not have room to shrink.

Winding Alone or With a Friend?

To pair an elastic yarn with another yarn, wind both yarns onto a bobbin at the same time. Place the 2 source cones next to each other on the floor and wind the bobbin holding both yarns in the same hand. Holding your hand close to the bobbin will help prevent the yarns from separating as they go onto the bobbin. I have used both a hand winder and an electric bobbin winder to wind the spools from two cones and have not had any trouble with the yarns getting tangled either as I wound onto the spools or while I was weaving. Warp with Care

We recommend that you have some experience with active yarns to successfully use them in your warp. If you want to use these yarns for warp, here are a few suggestions:

Keep the warp under tension at all times: on the warping board and as you wind the warp onto the loom.
Warp back to front. This will ensure the stability of the warp and prevent it from showing its potentially lively side before you are ready for it to be lively.
These are thin yarns and could be subject to breaking when used as warp. The sizing on the yarn does make it possible to use these yarns for warp. If you decide to use these yarns as warp, please warp from the back and always keep the yarns under tension.

Treat them Right!

Modern elastic yarns are stable and have long-wearing properties with normal use. As with any handmade fabrics, do not leave them in the sun or expose them to repeated high heat (hot iron or dryer) as this can weaken the elastic properties of the yarn. We have all seen that effect as our stretch jeans wear out after repeatedly washing and drying them using high heat in the dryer. If you make something with elastic yarn, it is best to line dry (or use a cool setting on the dryer) the item with repeat washings. Or make something like a scarf that doesn’t need frequent laundering.

We generally think about how to use our yarns in weaving, but you could use them in knitting, crocheting or any other handcraft that you would like to pursue.

Can I Make a Project With a Different Yarn?-Blog Post

One of our frequently asked questions is “How do I make a project with a different yarn?” Michele loves the Seaside towel that is made with 8/2 unmercerized cotton yarn. She would like to make them with the 10/2 Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarns. Let’s follow her journey to convert the Seaside Towel, in the Seaglass colorway from 8/2 unmercerized cotton yarn to 10/2 Tubular Spectrum Mercerized Cotton.

I love the Seaglass colorway of the Seaside towels. However, I would like some dishtowels to be made from the finer and more durable Tubular Spectrum Mercerized Cotton. So, I would like to convert the original draft from 8/2 yarn to 10/2 yarn and then use Tubular Spectrum colors. The original towels look like this picture shown at the right.

Keeping the Number of Warp Ends Makes a Narrower Towel

The simplest way to convert from 8/2 (sett at 20 EPI) to 10/2 (with a sett of 24 EPI), is to keep the same number of ends. This will make the towels smaller. The original towel has 387 warp ends and the towel is a bit over 19” wide. (387 ends divided by a sett of 20 EPI is 19.35”). If I sett the same 387 ends at 24 EPI, the towel would be just over 16” wide. (387 ends divided by 24 EPI is 16.12”). Those towels would be great to hang in the powder room, but I want to make full sized kitchen towels.

Add Warp Ends to Make a Wider Towel

I want a towel about the same size as the original towel: about 19”. Nineteen inches wide with a sett of 24 EPI is 456 ends. So, I need to add approximately 69 warp ends. In the pattern, there are 7 color warp stripes across the towel. To spread out the extra 69 warp ends, I need about 10 more ends per warp stripe to make the towel about 19” wide.

Change Number of Threading Repeats

Now I need to think about the woven structure of the towel and see how to add those additional 10 warp ends into the pattern. Here is a partial draft of the original towel. This shows two warp stripes and one weft stripe. Each warp stripe has 6 repeats of an 8-thread rosepath sequence, with an additional 3 ends, threaded 1,2,1 to balance the pattern for the stripe.

One Repeat or Two?

Here is one repeat of the 8-thread rosepath sequence. I need to add 10 threads. If I add just one repeat, I have added less than 10 threads. Adding two repeats will add 16 threads.

Wider Towel

Because I enjoy big towels, I’ll add 2 repeats in each of the seven color sections. I now have 112 more ends (16 threads x 7 stripes = 112). This is a bit more than the 69 I needed, but I like a generous towel. After adding all those extra ends, I have a total of 499 warp ends, sett at 24 EPI. My warp now measures 20.79” in the reed.

Wider Windowpanes

The draft with 499 ends is pleasing, but I felt the dark stripes lost their umph. To compensate, I made the dark stripes 2 threads wider. Expanding the dark stripes from 5 ends to 7. I did this by recoloring one thread on each side of the original stripe. The draft is still the same 499 ends.

Longer Towel

To make the towels longer, I also need to add weft yarn. In this pattern, the weft colors are treadled as drawn in. There are 8 picks in a repeat. Adding 3 extra repeats in each of the seven weft stripes would be an extra inch. (3 repeats x 8 weft picks = 24 picks). If I do that to each of the 7 weft stripes, I have made the towels 7” longer, and now they have about the same width to length ratio as the original towels.

The New Colors!

Now that I have my draft, I can replace the 8/2 yarn with Tubular Spectrum colors. This is a great chance to use our Playing with Color Cards. I love the clear bright colors of the Tubular Spectrum mercerized yarn colors are brighter. Although this is one of the reasons I prefer them, I still want the feel of the SeaGlass towels.

**Here are my Tubular Spectrum color choices:**

The first color is Maurice Brassard’s ‘Teal’. It doesn’t look anything like Tubular Spectrum Teal. I’m leaning toward Light Gray.

Bleu Cobalt is a pale blue and I’ll use Sky Blue.

Seaton is a blue green. I looked at Sea Green (too green) but preferred Tubular Spectrum Teal.

Sapin is greener and I like Sea Green for this.

Forest is a nice deep green to replace Vert Fonce, but I chose to move to the bluer side of things and use Navy.

Resized and Recolored

Finally, let’s recap the steps to change your project from one yarn to another.

Determine the size of the new project.
Fit the EPI of the new yarn to the project.
Add (or subtract) threading repeats to achieve the desired size.
Recolor if needed or desired!

But Wait, There’s Always More!

Now I’m looking at this 8-thread rosepath repeat and considering changing it to a versatile 8-shaft draft, but that’s a subject for another blog post!

Welcome back to another Designer Spotlight Blog! This week we have a treat for you! Jaimee Veronneau Roberts is a vibrant weaver whom we have come to know through her online presence at The Dog and Pony Show. We admire her sense of color and ability to produce vibrant fabrics. In between designing projects, she is dedicated to sharing her love of weaving by teaching at the Rhode Island Weaving Center and being an enthusiastic member of the Weaver's Guild of Rhode Island. Without further ado, here is Jaimee Veronneau Roberts!

Meet Jaimee Veronneau Roberts!

Tell us about yourself.

I feel like a relatively new weaver 8 years in, but textiles have been and will always be a lifelong study for me. I pinpoint my interest and love of bright, eye-catching fabrics to wearing a Catholic School uniform from Kindergarten through High School. The drab uniformity made me want to express myself outside of school in sparkling colors and one-of-a-kind pieces. I started vintage shopping with my older siblings and haven’t stopped 30 years later!

I love designing patterns, weaving yardage, and using my sewing skills to create vibrant, singular pieces for myself, my home, and hopefully more shows and sales. I turn my textiles into accessories, patches, chessboards, wall art and whatever I think of next! Every weaving of mine is tackled like a design school project - mood boards, books with lots of shredded paper bookmarks, detailed notes on a crazy assortment of paper, poorly drawn renderings, and deadlines.

I weave at home and at The Saunderstown Weaving School with Norma Smayda. At my house, we converted our living room into my studio space that holds all of my sewing machines, fabric collection, looms, and yarns. I make a habit of getting up early everyday to get in there- whether it be cleaning up, getting a few inches of weaving in, or starting a hemming project. Even just 20 minutes in my studio gets me energized to dive back in after getting the kids out the door. It sets the tone and helps me stay focused all day.

How Did You Get Started?

I signed up for my first weaving class in 2017, at a time when I really needed something that was just for me. After five years as a stay-at-home mom, I started to feel like I was losing pieces of myself. Since studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology for Apparel Design, I always liked taking an extra side class- screen printing, crochet (which I still can't do!), wreath-making- I figured weaving would be another rabbit in my hat. That first weaving class I took was on a rigid heddle loom at a local yarn shop: The Mermaid’s Purl (I love shouting out local businesses!). Almost immediately my brain started thinking about more shafts, more colors, and the endless rainbow of possibilities. That led to a Continuing Education class at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with Susan Sklarek. Outside of multi-shaft loom setup, Susan pushed the idea that the weft can really be anything. I used silicone children’s toys, painted bubble wrap, sewn crepe paper, and feathers as weft to create bananas weavings. I have those pieces hanging up right next to my loom to remind myself to be inventive, imaginative and surprising.

Since 2018, I have been weaving at The Saunderstown Weaving School with Norma Smayda. Norma is a walking encyclopedia of weaving, has an unbelievable library, and a drive to spread weaving education. At her school, I’m trying to tick off all of the structure boxes. I just finished up a rep weave table runner and am now threading a large waffle weave wall hanging. The Monday night weaving class at SWS hosts a mean potluck, sparks great conversation weekly, and is each other's cheerleaders. I'm very lucky to have found a super weaving gang.

I’m truly thankful I signed up for that first weaving class and carved out that time to explore my hobbies. It led me on an entirely new, electrifying path. I know I’m a better parent when I’m proud of myself and the work I do beyond my family—it energizes me and makes me more present for them, too. Hopefully, my experience encourages others to sign up for that class, workshop, or online lecture!

What Looms Do You Have?

I have a beautiful 10 shaft cherry Fireside Loom (which is pretty much a piece of art itself), a ’new to me’ 24 shaft Toika EEVA, a sweet little 4 shaft Dorset, and about 6 small metal 4 shaft Structo looms. I’m hoping to teach a beginner class with the Structo looms someday. Add it my endless To Do/ Ideas List!

Favorite Weave Structure?

Doubleweave pickup!!! I love having the ability to control the color and pattern so much in a specific space. I think anyone in any fiber arts looks at double weave and is like ‘how’d that get there?!?!?’ I love the mystery it holds and the puzzle it presents in the design process. Jennifer Moore's book is my go-to!

Favorite Lunatic Fringe products?

Obviously, I love Lunatic Fringe Yarns’ bold color selection, but also your cotton’s lustrous sheen. My favorites are 10/2 or 5/2 Tubular Spectrum Mercerized Cotton in Verbena and 10 Red Purple. I love the 10 Red Purple because is it hot pink or red? At my weaving class, it's a heated debate!

I just ordered GevolveYarns Abigail Gimp Yarn in a few colors. The colors are so unique for a sparkle accent, can't wait to try them!

Do You Use a Special Tool That You Can't Weave Without?

I did a Top 6 here because all these things get me in the right mindset to sit, focus, and get some work done.

Vintage Lee overalls with a built-in apron- I have lil’ snippers, heddle hooks, seam rippers, and pencils ready to grab and go.
Purple Schacht Shuttle- my ‘treat yo’ self’ shuttle!
My bobbin winder that was my grandmother's 70's sewing machine- I traded my friend Jeff some sewing work for his mechanical expertise. He told me he painted the box holding the motor with the brightest paint he had in his garage. The orange bobbin winder makes me smile every time I look at it.
Post-it Notes- I leave myself a lot of little love notes about where I left off, don’t forgets, did you think offs?
An FIT Necklace- a 72” tape measure always around your neck and always in a fun color.
Music, History Podcasts, or Audiobooks- always with headphones to help me cancel out everything else!

What Inspires You?

There are so many people who have shaped and motivated what I strive to achieve as an artist and teacher, but a few women stand out.

First, Mary Quant and the Youthquake culture were pivotal. Her fearless innovation, spirit of collaboration, and the vibrant commotion she sparked in fashion led me to move to London and study there. She was self-taught and a true visionary, not just in aesthetics, but in understanding materials and how to bring bold ideas to the market. That kind of creative courage stays with me.

Closer to home, Barbara Kling. My mom’s best friend and also the mother of my best friend, had a huge influence. She was a ceramicist who worked out of her home, teaching classes, and selling at local craft fairs. Her beautiful artwork was just intertwined in their life. I still cherish the holiday pieces she made. They fill me with love and nostalgia every time I unbox them. I hope someday my weavings carry that same kind of warmth for the people I love.

Lately, I’ve been immersed in Otti Berger: Weaving for Modernist Architecture by Judith Raum and the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin. The book itself is striking - a gorgeous green color, chock full of photos and bigger than life (physically and in the font and layout). I was lucky to see Berger’s work at Harvard Art Museums’ Artisanal Modernism show. I’m inspired by her commitment to both beauty and utility in her art, and how much she pushed the limits of the art form in her tragically short life.

And of course, my family. I could never have such a time-consuming, tedious trade without their support. I'm lucky we can always find a playground within 2 miles of every art show and guild meeting I drag them to!

Why Do You Weave?

At a particularly low point in my early 20’s, I recognized the joy and confidence I gained from completing a project with my hands. I’ve been following that feeling ever since. It inspired me to transfer colleges, study abroad, invest in big, new tools, and shoot for the moon. Weaving makes me trust my eye, believe in my talent, and invest in the community I’ve built through the classes I take and teach.

What Else Are You Up to?

I’m currently teaching a Level 2 Kids Weaving Class at The Rhode Island Weaving Center in Wakefield, RI. There was so much left to learn after we wrapped up our Weaving 1 class that I had to create another level. The group of girls is so inquisitive and engrossed. I love sharing my knowledge with them. We have a ton of fun together making textiles and belting out pop ballads. Can't wait for Level 3!

I’d also like to create a children’s course that integrates handweaving basics with Rhode Island and New England’s historical context in the textile industry. I want local kids to understand how fabric was made and how the huge mill their favorite rock climbing gym is housed in played a part in that process. I’m hoping to make this an after-school program.

I LOVE the Catskills Weaving School Speaker Series. Everyone has their Candy Land board of how they got where they are- I love hearing that recap from creative people I admire.

Lastly, I adored Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction show at MOMA. I hope every East Coast guild and weaving school got a trip in! What a great time to be a weaver with these huge institutions highlighting the fiber arts. Long overdue!

What Else Would You Like Us to Know?

I’d love to share this project that was recently completed in New England. I was approached by Dawson Design Associates of Seattle to help recruit Rhode Island and New England weavers to create handwoven artwork for a hotel redesign in Newport, Rhode Island. After reaching out to local guilds and weaving studios we had over 35 weavers create 220 original pieces for every room in the hotel. We got to highlight some amazing local weavers (Suzi Ballenger, Katie Strano) and unbelievable weaving organizations (Hartford Artisans Weaving Center). Both the project managing and natural tones the artwork required were totally out of my comfort zone. If you’re ever in Newport and are a weaver or fiber artist- stay at the Newport Harbor Island Resort for both the artwork and the views!

On Instagram (@the.dog.and.pony.show), I started a hashtag ‘dressing like the loom’ instead of ‘dressing the loom’. It’s where my clothes match whatever I’m weaving. It’s silly and playful! I keep trying to get others to join in, so here’s the official invite! XO

Making a Soft and Cuddly Evergreen Scarf-Blog Post

We love scarves on the Rigid Heddle Loom. Amber wanted to make a scarf using 8/2 unmercerized Bleached White yarn that would be long enough to wrap around her neck and be versatile in how she wore it. And so, she designed her Evergreen Scarf. Let’s let her tell us all about it.

If you are a rigid heddle weaver, you’re going to love this easy and beautiful Evergreen Scarf. I really wanted to design something using 8/2 unmercerized Bleached White yarn for the warp. And I wanted a nice long scarf. I love to wrap my scarves in different ways when I wear them. To make this project, I used a 16” rigid heddle Ashford loom using a 10-dent reed and couldn’t be happier with the outcome!

Warp that Loom!

I began warping the loom, using doubled threads, of 8/2 Bleached White American Maid unmercerized cotton. No need to rethread the heddle after I warped the loom! When you use doubled threads, you warp both the slots and the holes and the heddle is already set up to weave when you are done!

I could jump right into weaving! I filled my bobbins, for the weft, using a single strand of a few colors I enjoy: 8/2 Maurice Brassard unmercerized cotton Seaton, and Gris Fonce. And the same Bleached White yarn from the warp. Mmmm. I love those colors together!

I also love using a boat shuttle and bobbins to weave on my rigid heddle loom! It is much faster than using stick shuttles. The yarn comes off the bobbins so easily, and the shuttle fits so nicely in my hand!

Changing Colors!

When making this scarf, the pattern switches colors often. I used the pickup stick for the Seaton and Gris Fonce and for the Bleached White, I used plain weave. I thought the texture with the colors helped add more character to the scarf and the simple, plain weave for the Bleached White stripes really added a pop between the colors.

As I wove, I noticed I was encountering an off balance in my color changes when tucking my ends in. The stripes were not showing a straight line as the tails tucked they were stacking up on one side of the warp. To avoid the unbalanced look, I discovered it was easier to weave with the colors moving from right to left. Whereas, when weaving with the Bleached White, I’d move from left to right. Therefore, my tail ends didn’t bunch up together and helped balance it out for that straight color change.

Add a Bit of Bling!

I enjoy the look of beads on projects to simply add more character. I choose to use a clear and shinier bead for this scarf, and not an overwhelming number of beads. They add a cute glimmer to the finished scarf. Since I didn't use too many beads, the bling is noticeable up close, but not from far away. Just the right amount!

And a Bit of Color!

I also added extra strands of the Seaton yarn into my fringe as I was plying the fringe. This helped bring the green color into the all-white fringe. When I was all done, the fringe blends nicely with the scarf! And it sparkles!

Snuggly, Cozy and Warm!

The end results were exactly what I had hoped for, and this Evergreen Scarf is long enough to wrap around my neck in different ways and long enough to drape over me. It is light weight, beautiful, and something I can wear with multiple outfits. It is a quick and easy project that is great for a gift idea for yourself or a friend as the cool weather creeps up on us.

Floating Along – Blog Post

There is often debate at our local guild meeting about whether to use floating selvage threads. The consensus seems to be, like most things these days…it depends! Michele recently wrote a blog about Diane Mortensen and her dislike of floating selvage threads. Katzy has been collecting opinions about floating selvage threads for many years and frequently uses them as she weaves. She has a few tips on when and how to use them to share with you.

A Floating What?

A floating selvage thread is an extra thread (or two) that is added to the selvage edge of your fabric. Those threads are not threaded through a heddle, but they do go through the reed and are tied up at the front of the loom with the rest of the warp threads. Because they do not pass through a heddle, they float up above the other warp threads at the selvage edge. See the picture to the right. This floating allows you to either go over the thread or under the thread when you are weaving.

The intent of the floating selvage threads is to ensure that your weft yarns go all the way to the selvage edge with each pick. Weaving structures like twill or summer and winter have weft floats. Sometimes the weft yarn doesn’t always go all the way to the outside threads leaving a ragged selvage edge. Floating selvages can fix that ragged edge by forcing the weft yarn to always go all the way to the outside.

Tips for Using Floating Selvage Threads

Two tricks for good looking edges. These are suggestions, not mandatory!

Pick a Way and Use it. I use Over, Under. I like to weave over the floating selvage thread when entering the shed, and under the floating selvage thread when leaving the shed. This way, I always go over and under each floating selvage thread with every two picks. The consistency is important and helps me remember to catch the floating selvage thread.
No Twisting. Keep the floating selvage threads from twisting around the edge threads, by taking care to go over the floating selvage when the outside warp thread is up, and under the floating selvage when the outside warp thread is down. This is especially important when using a basket weave structure for your hems. If you don’t alternate the threads, the floating selvage can get twisted around the edge threads and it can be difficult to separate it when you switch to another structure for the body of your woven fabric.

When Floating Selvage Threads are Not Needed

There are several scenarios where floating selvage threads are not necessary and can get in the way.

Plain Weave. Weaving with structures that incorporate plain weave or close to plain weave in the structure do not have long floats. The weft yarns always go to the selvage edge. These woven structures include plain weave, shadow weave, and doubleweave.
Plain Weave Edges. When there are 4-6 ends of plain weave on either selvage edge of your fabric, the weft threads will be secured. You need at least 4 threads of plain weave to provide enough stability for your edge.
Start From the Other Side. As Diane Mortensen suggested, sometimes which side you start your shuttle on can make a difference in how the selvage threads interlock. This option is always worth a shot. Click here to read Michele’s blog post.
Remove Selvage Threads. I have been told by some weavers “If it offends me, I cut it off”. That is how they deal with unruly edges without using floating selvage threads.

If you choose to use a floating selvage thread, there are two ways to go about it:

Wind It In

It is easy and convenient to wind the floating selvage threads with the rest of your warp. After threading the rest of the warp threads, pull the floating selvage threads through the reed as you sley the rest of the warp threads. Tie the floating selvage threads in with the rest of the warp threads as you attach them to the front apron rod.

If the tension on the floating selvage gets loose, weight the thread by hanging a shower curtain hook with a weight on it. Then, move the weight to the warp beam, and it will reposition itself each time you advance the warp. You can see the weight on the floating selvage in the picture at the left.

Or Weight it Down

You can add floating selvage threads after you have beamed the warp. Perhaps you didn’t realize that you would need a floating selvage, and you need to add it after you start weaving. The steps to add a floating selvage are as follows:

Begin by measuring the floating selvage thread(s). Make them slightly longer than the warp length. Now you have a bit extra for tying the threads to the weight and to the front of the loom.
Wrap those threads around something. This keeps the threads from getting tangled. Ashford’s Warp Thread Weights provide an elegant solution. You can also use fishing weights, pill bottles with quarters or a variety of other ways to get the job done.
Attach the free end of the floating selvage thread to the front of the loom. From the back, carry the thread past the heddles, then through the reed. Use an adjacent empty dent to pass the floating selvage thread through the reed. Then use a t-pin to attach the floating selvage to the woven cloth or tie the floating selvage thread(s) to a warp bundle or add it to a warp bundle.
Hang the floating selvage and its weight over the back beam on the loom. Provide tension to the floating selvage threads by adding weight. The Ashford Thread Weights come with metal washers so you can adjust how much tension you want on the threads. Make sure that the tension on the floating selvage threads mimics the tension of the other warp threads. Remember the Goldilocks syndrome: Not too much, not too little, just right! Weave Away!

Now that you have your floating selvage threads, you are ready to weave! Remember to go around the floating selvage threads as you weave. Jacey has navigated the road of spinning, weaving, and knitting through a set of "different eyes", and we appreciate the SPIN (pun intended) she has brought to the Fiber Arts World....here is Jacey's Designer Spotlight Blog!

Meet Jacey Boggs Faulkner!

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Jacey Boggs Faulkner and I wish I could say I’ve been weaving for 25 years. I wish I had been weaving for 25 years. I lament that I didn’t come to weaving until I was 45 years old. At 50 years old, I worry that I won’t be able to weave all I want to weave, learn all I want to learn about weaving in the 40 (50?) years I have left. I haven’t really found something I don’t like to weave because every new thing I weave is a delight and an education. As a hand spinner who has been spinning for 25 years, I am particularly focused on using handspun and I’m entirely taken with overshot because of the way it makes handspun yarn shine.

How Did You Get Started?

Since I started PLY Magazine (2012) people have been telling me that I should start a weaving magazine. I’d respond that one of the main reasons that PLY has been successful is because I know and love spinning. Friends countered by telling me that I should learn to weave, that I’d love weaving. I didn’t believe them. Boy was I wrong.

Four years ago my guild (COSWG) offered a 2-day multi-shaft weaving class (taught by Patty Huffer). It was very inexpensive and all-inclusive (a wonderful thing about guilds, right?). Thinking it would be a nice way for my 15 year old and I to spend a few hours together, I signed us up. After 3 hours I knew weaving was the love I’d been looking for — exciting, satisfying, and challenging.

I spent my first years (and still to this day) inviting the charming and knowledgable Jane Stafford into my home for morning tea (via her online school, JST). I’ve learned so much and been so inspired by her and her dream team. In fact, I started an online guild (The PLY Spinners Guild) modeled off her school and she was kind and gracious enough to help me along the way. As is my way, I also collected and devoured all I could in terms of weaving resources. I looked at old Handwoven magazines and got inspired, I devoured all the issues of Heddlecraft, absorbing what I could and making note of all the things to come back to when I knew more.

I also had the extreme good luck to post a few reels on the socials of me beaming my warp in a less-than-ideal manner and Lisa Graves of Kawartha Weaving reached out to gently and generously ask if she could help. She did and we became friends and within the year decided to start a magazine (WEFT). I still don’t know enough about weaving to start a magazine but Lisa Graves (my partner and WEFT’s managing editor) and Jette Vandermeiden (WEFT’s technical editor) have that knowledge part covered and between the three of us, there’s more than enough love of the craft.

What Looms Do You Have?

By the end of the first day of class with Patty Huffer, she had located a wonderful old 40 inch 4-shaft Fireside loom and by the end of the weekend that loom sat in my loft. By the end of that year, I also had an Ashford table loom, a Jane 8-shaft table loom, and a Schacht Baby Wolf 8-shaft. Right now, I mostly weave on an 8-shaft (adding more shafts soon) Louet Spring II, a loom that fits me like a glove.

Favorite Weave Structure?

I haven’t met a weave structure I don’t like! Right now I’m a little in love with crackle and overshot (especially Bertha Gray Hayes beautiful designs) but I can’t wait to fall in love over and over again as I branch out into more structures.

Favorite Lunatic Fringe products?

Uh…Tubular Spectrum mercerized cotton yarn! The colors are so exciting. I’ve done several kits and those yarns wove up so beautifully and have worn so well. We use our kaleidoscope napkins every night at family dinner. I almost wish they weren’t still in perfect shape because now that I’m a better weaver I can see all my mistakes and want to reweave them! Someday that Full Spectrum kit will be mine!

What Inspires You?

I’m inspired by everything. I know that sounds like a shine-on but really. I’m inspired by my children, by the night sky, by moss on a stone, by Ezra Furman songs, by Andrea Gipson poetry, by a perfect persimmon, by my imperfect best friend, by the love I feel for my partner, by my cat’s nose. It’s not hard to inspire me, everything pushes me to be better and do more.

Why Do You Weave?

I weave because weaving is exciting, satisfying, and challenging. I love creating, I think beauty and art are vital to humanity, and I find satisfaction in making useful things. Weaving gives me all those things — creation, beauty, art, and usefulness. When I learned to weave, weaving met me where I was, and it continues to do so to this day. The more I learn, the more I find there is to learn. The more I understand, the more I discover there is to understand. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for? Something that meets us just where we are but that excites and challenges us enough that we don’t stay where we are for long! What a perfect craft!

What Else Are You Up to?

I’m always doing a lot (I’d be lost without my bullet journal). At this very moment I’m working on five issues of PLY and five issues of WEFT. I’m writing a new book about spinning. I’m spinning yarn for a sweater. I’m spinning yarns for the PLY Spinners Guild season 3 wall hanging (I spin yarns based on the season’s teachings and then weave a 6’x3’ wall hanging that is the backdrop for that season’s episodes). I’m finishing some crackle towels for holiday presents. And after 2pm each day, I hang with my teenage kids (two are still at home), roller-skate, rock climb, and eat just the right amount of salted dark chocolate.

I also might be thinking about a new magazine…PURL.
