Johansson's impossible scenes are full of fantasy and magical realism and they remind of the mind boggling work of Belgian photographer Christophe Gilbert who has been featured on LD before. This condom commercial for Four Seasons Condoms was banned in Australia because it was deemed too sexy and sleazy; I've seen sleazier. I think the ad is cute, dumb and hilarious all wrapped into one! Lol.

Fernando Botero's usually genial subjects are comical, satirical and sardonic. And he has joined other contemporary artistic uber giants such as Picasso, Dali and Francis Bacon in paying tribute to the genius of Diego Velazquez. I find Botero's "fat" (to use the artist's own word) portrayals of some of the 17th century Spanish Master's most recognized and significant artwork involving royalty and court notables, jovially mischievous, vivacious and wildly entertaining. I think the work is Boterismo at it's very best!

Experimental theater director Robert Wilson's recreation of The Death of Marat with Lady Gaga as the tragic protagonist. The portrait of the pop mega star by Wilson is one of six to be displayed at the Louvre in Paris starting November 11th .

N’ayant pû me corrompre il m’ont assassiné (Unable to corrupt me, they murdered me) is written on the makeshift writing table of this particular copy of the painting (there are several copies in existence) and also on Wilson's depiction of messianic Gaga's own excellent martyrdom.

The Death of Marat is a famous painting by French Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) of the French revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat who was stabbed to death in his bathtub in 1793.

Poignant, powerful, strong and shocking are some of the adjectives I'd use to describe the images for this breast cancer awareness campaign by Advertising Agency JWT from Brazil. ACCamargo Cancer Center: The anticancer paste up is an "in your face" message. It uses the medium of graffiti that is often universally employed as a means to express such phenomenon as sociopolitical discontent but is seldom re-purposed to raise awareness - in such vivid, impactful details - about a scourge that is affecting so many women all over the world. I had never seen graffiti utilized in this manner. I like it!

Realistic images of old, fragile superheroes seem utterly counter-intuitive to those of us who find the existence of fictional, costumed - and youthful, out of this world strong - superheroes intuitive. Andreas Englund, who is a Swedish artist, has created a series of oil-based paintings portraying the life of an aging superhero that is funny, engaging and very emotive.

Amazingly Fantastic Animated GIF Images of Banksy's Work

Serbian artist ABVH has made it possible for us to appreciate Banksy's work in a whole new light by turning the British street artist's work into fantastic moving images. I have published several posts of GIF images as well as Banksy's creations on Lunatica previously, so it should come as no surprise if I declare my total admiration for this amazingly fantastic project!

I know that this type of "guerrilla" art is not appreciated by everyone; in fact, there are many people out there who would argue that Banksy and other street artists like him are nothing but criminals and vandals. Point well taken. I can't expect everyone to share my likes and interests as that would make for a very boring world. And if we are to believe Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) who maintained that boredom is the root of all evil, then by all means people! Please take a couple of seconds of your time to let me know how you feel about Banksy and his choice of venues to exhibit his craft on the poll placed on the upper right hand side of the blog! I'm really, really curious to know how you feel.

Poll results - 8 votes were cast. Six votes "love" Banksy (75%) and 2 "like" him (25%). Not as big a sample as I had hoped, but thank you very much to those who participated.

Some folks idolize famous people so much that they will put permanent ink of the likeness of their idols on their body. I'm not exactly down with tats (too damn permanent!) although I have nothing against them per se. But I gotta hand it to these folks, really.

Some of these creations are really well done and they demonstrate a lot of skills on the part of the tattoo artist; the first Madonna tat on this list, in my opinion, was superbly crafted. Other skin depictions are just hideous regardless. I mean, that Miley Cyrus cartoon tattoo is a bit funny but... seriously? How out of your mind, crazed fan do you have to be?

Beautiful 3D Animations of the Paintings of Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet

First Steps (after Millet), 1890

These videos of fantastically fun and skillful 3D animations of the work of Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh and Impressionist giant Claude Monet were created by Luca Agnani and Alexander Kolomietz respectively.

Agnani featured several of van Gogh's paintings - of which I posted copies of a handful - in the video he titled "Van Gogh Shadow". Kolomietz, meanwhile, only worked on one of Monet's creations. What fantastic explosions of color! I love this beautiful and amazing work!

Amazing Colorized Animated Images from the 1800's

These are amazing moving images from the 1800's that were created with animation devises such as the phenakistoscope which was invented in 1841 by a Belgian physicist by the name of Joseph Plateau. Later in the same year, Austrian mathematician Simon von Stampfer invented the stroboscopic disk, which is a similar machine as the phenakistoscope. These dynamic images and many others depicting the devises used over 150 years ago to create them, were gathered by Harvard's Kennedy School fellow Richard Balzer.

Google celebrated Salsa Queen Celia Cruz's birthday by unleashing one of their now famous "doodles" today. The Cuban icon, born Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso de la Santísima Trinidad in La Habana on October 21 1925, passed away on July 16 2003 at the age of 78. Azucar Celia!

Beautiful and Extremely Creepy Posters for American Horror Story

I can't claim that American Horror Story is one of my favorite shows because I have yet to see a single episode. But I have been very intrigued and have been meaning to start watching the shows ever since the first beautifully creepy posters for the horror anthology started popping up a couple of years ago. American Horror Story's 3rd season picked up on October 9th. However, I will start watching from the beginning with season 1 (Murder House), move on to season 2 (Asylum) and then hit the newest set of installments which are collectively titled Coven. Meantime, I will enjoy reveling in the gorgeous creepiness of these fantastically eery, hair-raising and downright disturbing but beautiful posters.

Here's a little synopsis about AHS from Slate that I found interesting:

Over American Horror Story’s two invigorating, gruesome seasons, creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have indicated that there is no subject too distasteful for them to tackle. In last year’s installment of the anthology series, American Horror Story: Asylum, the pair took on insanity, nuns, aliens, possession, medical experimentation, religious hypocrisy, homosexual aversion therapy, serial killers, the devil, and abortion. For good measure, they threw in the Holocaust in a bravura two-episode stand featuring an inmate who believed she was Anne Frank. But even this past boldness does not quite prepare one for the opening segment of the new season, titled American Horror Story: Coven. Forget the serpents in the show’s promotional materials; Coven begins with America’s preeminent horror story: slavery.

Witches of East End's Jenna Dewan Tatum In Nothing but Reptilian Body Paint for PETA

Witches of East End star Jenna Dewan Tatum posed in snake colored body paint for PETA about 3 years ago (I'm a tad late to the party. I know) to bring to the fore the plight of reptilians and exotic animals who are skinned alive or clobbered to death for...well their skin. These poor animals oftentimes are left writhing in pain sometimes for days before they finally die on their own.
While I'm not a PETA uber fanatic, that practice is kinda WTFcuky to me. At least put the animal to a quick death so that it does not suffer unnecessarily. What is the point of leaving the reptiles alive? Seriously. What is the point? Source

Nothing Compares 2 U Swinging Naked from a Wrecking Ball: Miley Cyrus' and Sinead O'Connor's Videos Have Little in Common

If you're into this sort of thing, you have probably already heard about the back- and-forth going on between the pope-picture shredding Irish singer Sinead O'Connor and look-at-me!-I'm-so-not-Hanna Montana-anymore actress/singer Miley Cyrus. Haven't heard? Well, here is a short but sweet synopsis: Sinead wrote Miley an open letter a couple of days ago urging the 20 year performer not to allow others to pimp and prostitute her. The letter, according to O'Connor, was borne out of her concern for the young pop star in view of the latter's recent release of her risque and sexually suggestive music video 'Wrecking Ball'. How did this unlikely pair come to be in the same conversation together you ask? Well, it seems like Miley was quoted as having said that she took inspiration for Wrecking Ball from Sinead's song and music video Nothing Compares 2 U.

Just for giggles, I put the two music videos together here and I can see some aesthetic similarities between them such as the closeups of the emotive faces shedding a tear from the right eye. Aside from that (and only sartorially speaking), well, Miley swings back and forth buck naked, monkey style from a wrecking ball while Sinead is dressed all in black from head to toe. In black. From head to toe.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a life-long self-described Communist and Salvador Dali (1904-1989) who was nicknamed "ávida dollars" (eager for dollars), was most certainly not. The two did not exactly get along; they had a famously tumultuous relationship full of conflicts and disagreements. GENIOS is the name of this fantastic, skillfully-crafted animated short film featuring tooned versions of Picasso and Dali really getting on each others nerves even after death. I got a kick out of watching this beautiful creation by CICE!

Alessandro de' Medici, Duke - and ruler - of Florence from 1530 until 1537 is a seldom-mentioned historical figure I have always been intrigued by. Nicknamed Il Moro by his contemporaries, Alessandro (1510-1537), is said by many historians to have been the product of a hookup between Giulio di Giuliano de' Medici - who later became Pope Clement VII - and an African servant of the powerful family's household named Simonetta. In 1536, he married Margarethe von Habsburg, daughter of Karl V von Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor. Alessandro, who fathered 3 children that we know of (Giulia de' Medici, Giulio de' Medici, Porzia de' Medici) by his mistress Taddea Malespina, died in Florence at the hands of a distant cousin in 1537.

There are controversies as to Il Moro's ("The Moor", a moniker used in some parts of Europe to refer to a person of color) provenance but that is to be expected given the fact that the Medici dynasty is the most influential family in the history of the Renaissance having given their patronage through 300 years of rule, to such artistic uber-giants and movers and shakers as Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo Da Vinci to name a few. The snooty, oft race conscious and panties-in-a-bunch western art establishment doesn't seem to enjoy broaching the subject that a scion of one of the most influential and powerful families in European history - in particular with respect to Renaissance art - was black. Indeed, when there have been exhibits of Alessandro's portraits in the USA (Philadelphia Museum until Feb. 13, 2005) as well as abroad, Il Moro's African ancestry is seldom mentioned. There is also the little detail that some of Europe's most titled families - including two branches of the Hapsburgs - descended from Alessandro's children.

Talk about inconvenient truths.

Kinky Print Ad For Curtains Spooks Me

Do people respond to kinky, sexually-charged advertising more positively than they do to tepid, non-sexual commercial ads? If we consider the powerful and oft-used adage that tells us that "sex sells" then the answer to the question is a foregone conclusion. Or is it?

In any event, advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather of Bangkok, Thailand conceived this raunchy print ad campaign for Mr. Curtain. Do I feel inspired by the kinky images to purchase this product? Absolutely not! The last thing I want every time I look at my curtains is to envision sex orgies taking place underneath them. But that's just me.

Notorious mass murderers Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Kim Jong-il have been given a most colorful pink make-over complete with earrings and heart-shaped tinted glasses by American artist Scott Scheidly. In reference to the work, the artist states that "the idea stems from Spoke Art gallery's "Coen Brothers Vs Quentin Tarantino" show I did last year from the film 'Inglorious Basterds'. I had previously come up with the idea of an all pink show and figured this was a great starting point.

"The idea is really all about the power of colour and symbology and how it can change perception."

"The reaction has been huge and mostly positive. I understand not everyone is going to get this type of art or humour. Controversy is always a good thing though.I decided to paint Hitler as actor Martin Wuttke."

Pretty in pink? Hardly. Ugly is ugly. But I do find those earrings, especially the one on Stalin, kinda funny.

Madonna Brandishes Weapons In Israel Concert and Then Calls For World Peace

Madonna kicked off her 'MDNA' concert tour in Israel in plenty of style. Madonna style. For starters, there's the usual Madonna-branded controversy galore in Israel because of the AK47 and the other weapons displayed onstage. There is also the ubiquitous religious imagery and symbolism Madonna loves to inject into her shows that always end up pissing off the religious types. And there is also plenty of other shit on the shows that The Queen of Pop has been getting away with for 30 years and that always seem to rub many people the wrong way every-freaking-time like clockwork. Her antics get her press and keep her in the public discourse and whether people elevate her or tear her up, it does not matter. The effect is the same.

But let me be frank and state my bias: I like Madonna. I like her because I think she is very talented and I like her music and her elaborate concerts although I have never been to one of her shows. But most of all, I like her because at the age of 53, she carries on in spite of (or maybe because of, who knows) her many haters and detractors. The woman does not give a rat's ass; she does as she wants and continues to be immensely successful and popular with a humongous base of adoring fans. And I say, let the haters hate Madgesty. Let them eat cake. Who gives a rodent's derriere?!
