Wedding Moments Inspiration : Wedding Cakes

The wedding cake has its seat up upon the stage, basking in the warm banquet hall light, greeting one and all on entry into the ballroom with a display of softness, romance and spectacle. I love the delicateness and effort that goes into putting it together – the rosebud icings, the ribbons that goes round, the confetti sprinklings, the many different forms and pyramidal layering that builds it up.

A pity, then, that its glory lasts only after the first march in and in most cases, never have the honour of landing up on dessert plates. After all, who doesn’t love a piece of the wedding cake?

Would I shoot with their pet dog? Oh Yeah! And it was fun working together with everyone on the shoot, though the doggie only appeared as cameo during the second half of the day… This is the first time I’ve actually worked with a pet in a pre-wedding photoshoot and naturally, I was abit cautious not wanting to overwork the dog but I guessed that was unfounded. It was the dog that ended up overworking my camera! haha..

Can’t help it but this deserves a caption… YUMMY!

Tips for Bride & Groom : Making More Time For Friends At Wedding Banquets

At most chinese wedding banquets, one common event which I know most couples feel stressed about is the group photo taking. Usually, starting from the immediate VIP tables to the relatives’ and then to their friends and colleagues. 30 tables may be over in flash but if you’re having 50 tables or more, then it could take you an hour plus, or from the 5th course to dessert time. And before you know it, everyone’s headed for the exit and there goes whatever plan you have for catching up with friends, especially friends whom you have not seen for a while or those who had specially jetted in for your big day.

One way around this, I would suggest, is to keep your group table photo taking to a minimal. Shoot only with family and relatives (for they will be asking for the photos the very next day) and drop those non-essential standard group photos with friends and colleagues.

Instead, use the time saved to mingle with them – thank them personally, crack a few jokes, drink a couple of toasts, hug someone in happiness, play some table games, pose playfully with close friends etc. Not only will your guests not feel neglected, there will also be lotsa candid photographic moments with everyone.

Now, won’t those photos be much more of a keepsake?

Overseas Pre-Wedding Photography : Peter & Cherry [Malacca]

5AM. The very first most memorable thing about this pre-wedding photoshoot across the causeway was the meetup timing. We had wanted to move out as early as possible so as to avoid the usual heavy morning traffic and also, to ensure we arrive in Malacca early enough for a good old wonton mee + thick malaysian coffee breakfast. Yes, I know – crazy isn’t exactly the most appropriate word to describe us. Then again, arriving at Malacca around 8am in the morning isnt exactly the most sane thing to do either.

Those who had worked with me before know I work with an assistant cum associate photographer named Peter and it was his pre-wedding photography that had the entire team (comprising of another 2 buddies – of whom 1 took on the role of the pre-wedding videographer – and a makeup artist) loaded up on caffeine as we drove through Malaysia past the rising morning sun among the plantations and spent the next 4 days exploring the food paradise that is Malacca. From the chicken rice balls to the famous Jonker Street chendol to the sumptuous rice dumplings and the wonderous nonya cuisine, we spared nothing. After a hard day of shooting, we could even muster the energy to troop out in search of an old school coffeeshop for a ‘you tiao’ and coffee supper.

And oh, the pre-wedding photography too. That was memorable as well. I’ll let the pictures speak for me here now.

Wedding Day Photography : Simon & Jayne

Their wedding was an intimate affair with personal touches that spoke of the couple’s outgoing, fun-loving personalities.

Simon is from Australia, while Jane hails from England. He is an intense gritty extrovert who participates in marathons and extreme sports while she is a fine lovely British lady. Their personalities rubbed off on each other and their differences drew them closer and eventually to the tropics of Thailand for their big day.

Their love for nature explained the choice of their wedding venue at Villa Shanti in Phuket. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the vast Andaman Sea, Villa Shanti is definitely the perfect spot for a quiet private beachfront wedding that catches the sunset as the wedding revelry unfolds.

Contrasting colours of purple and yellow dotted the ceremony and reception. The cheery colour theme was clearly evident from the hand bouquet to the table settings makes a very striking and festive picture indeed. Even the bridesmaids were decked out in beautiful sunny yellow dresses with deep purple bouquets in hand.

A symbolic winebox ceremony made it memorable for guests who flew in from all over the world to witness this joyous occasion. The bride and groom wrote a letter to each other and placed it in the winebox together with a bottle of wine. The winebox was then sealed and will only be reopened on their 10th wedding anniversary.

The reception by the beach was equally celebratory. Fathers and groomsmen take turns to speak of their close ties with the couple, sharing anecdotes and embarrassing private stories, much to the amusement of the guests but blushes of the couple.

Fireworks added to the celebrations, while the party continued late into the night with endless dancing and singing under the stars.

It was truly a joy being their wedding photographer, and most of all, being a part of their festivities – capturing their biggest moments of the day, interacting with the fun loving guests and enjoying every single minute of it.

Wedding rings are really very interesting things to shoot. Small, delicate and versatile. You can hang, stack, roll, spin, shine light through – it’s up to your imagination. And it provides me with something to do when the bride is getting her make up done or when the church wedding is undergoing final preparations.

When it comes to rings, I usually shoot within the environment instead of shooting rings on ring pillows or in the ring boxes which can be very mundane after a while. It can be challenging sometimes, no doubt, especially when there’s nothing much around but it helps keep me alert and creative which I like.

He is a Singaporean who has studied and is living in the States. She’s been living and working in America all this while. And together Kuang & Peggy will be settling down in Washington after their wedding. Which is also why this pre-wedding photoshoot meant a lot to him as he wanted to bring a piece of Singapore back with him.

We did our shoot at places which, ermm, in a way, potentially add to his future homesickness, haha. Just joking here but you get the drift…

So, here’s a toast to the lovely couple – Kuang & Peggy and all the best in Washington!

Tips for Bride & Groom : Don’t Underestimate Jet Lag

If you are heading off to Europe or the United States for your pre-wedding photoshoot, do prepare for jet lag to set in. Full day photoshoots can be quite tiring and failure to allocate recovery time will easily take its toll resulting in lethargy, restlessness and less than ideal photo session.

It will be wiser to keep one full day free before your photoshoot and not plan for it to take place the very next day. That way, not only will you get enough rest, you will also have the opportunity to soak in the atmosphere before heading off with renewed enthusiasm.
