South African multimillionaire Adrian Gore, founder of global health insurance provider Discovery Limited, picked up a new condominium at Macklowe Properties’ 737 Park Avenue for $11.45 million, according to property records filed with the city today.
The three-bedroom, three-bathroom unit on the 15th floor was asking $12.5 million. It has been in contract since April, according to StreetEasy. The apartment has 2,915 square feet and is a combination of two units. There is also a powder room, heated flooring in the master bedroom, and a Varenna eat-in kitchen.
Gore’s attorney Peter Rosenberg and Jarrett White, marketing director for Macklowe, respectively declined to comment.
Macklowe bought the prewar Upper East Side site with Los Angeles-based private equity firm CIM Group in August 2011 for $360 million, then converted the property into high-end condos. The 21-story, 60-unit property at East 71st Street features a fitness center, bicycle storage and a live-in superintendent.
The building secured more than $250 million in sales as of November. It has been in the thick of several lawsuits involving long-term rental tenants in the building, including one who allegedly ran a bed and breakfast from her apartment and another who Macklowe aimed to evict for allegedly limiting construction.
As of 2011, Gore was named the 34th wealthiest person in Africa with a net worth of $280 million, according to Forbes magazine’s annual list. Discovery is best known for its incentive-based Vitality healthcare program, which rewards members with inexpensive flights and discounts for those who regularly visit the gym and eat vegetables.
Also in 2011, Gore purchased a penthouse condo at the Related Companies’ 22-story tower the Brompton, at 205 East 85th Street, for $6.1 million, property records show.

Speaking to Daily Nation he said “I had many options, including taking up a mortgage, but the cost of mortgage is unbelievably high. I could have bought a house, but none looked exactly like what I wanted”.

After coming up with th ehouse design on his own and waiting for years to have it completed, Munene who is allegedly single now has a prestigious mansion with 8 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 49 metre living room, a huge bar, a semi-circular observatory glass house, and an outdoor balcony. The residence also has an underground water tank that can hold 80,000 litres, and an overhead tank with a capacity of 6,000 litres.

Sandton is Africa’s hottest millionaire playground, boasting more high net worth individuals than anywhere else on the continent.
London-based financial research firm WealthInsight revealed this month that Joburg is home to 23 400 dollar millionaires.
Of these, 1 900 have risen to millionaire status over the past year alone, and 15 300 have chosen to live in Sandton.
Dollar millionaires are those individuals with business interests, investable assets and liquid assets worth $1 million (R9.6 million) or more, excluding the value of their main home.
The African city with the second most dollar millionaires is Cairo, with 20 800 by the end of last year. The Egyptian capital was followed by Lagos, Nigeria, with 18 000.
Cape Town ranks second in South Africa, with 9 000 dollar millionaires.
WealthInsight analyst Andrew Amoils said: “The most interesting statistics were in Sandton. Sandton experienced far stronger growth than the rest of the country, with millionaire numbers in the area rising by 18% during the past year.”
Joburg is also home to 285 multimillionaires, who are defined as having net assets worth more than $30 million.
According to Amoils, this ranks “well above the likes of Cairo (145), Cape Town (110) and Lagos (123)”.
South Africa’s four billionaires are Nicholas Oppenheimer and family, Johann Rupert, Patrice Motsepe and Christo Wiese.
The results of Census 2011 revealed that 3 678 households in the Sandton area enjoy an income of more than R2.4 million a year.
Sandhurst, arguably Sandton’s poshest suburb, is home to 120 of those high-income earners.
Driving down the quiet streets of that suburb, one finds few signs of life.
An occasional SUV – the standard Porsche or Mercedes Benz – rolls by, bouncing over speed bumps.
The greatest insight you can get into the characters of those who live beyond the walls comes from the ornamentation on their iron gates. One is adorned with bronze sculptures of cow heads, while a stone mermaid sits outside another.
It is difficult to differentiate between what is a house and what is a consulate or hotel here.
These estates have fancy names like Siena, Tchissola House and Cleveland Lodge, and their hedges are neatly trimmed into triangles and circles.
When international celebrities visit Joburg, they often stay in Sandhurst. Charlize Theron and Oprah Winfrey regularly stay at The Saxon boutique hotel, which is owned by London-based billionaire Douw Steyn.
Earlier this month, it was rumoured that Canadian teen pop sensation Justin Bieber stayed at The Saxon during the Joburg leg of his South African tour.
Most homes, and even some streets, are watched over by guards in huts outside. Everything from the landscaped pavements to the perimeter walls are detailed.
Everything is attractive and elaborate.
A myriad construction sites tells outsiders that the neighbourhood is flush with cash.
According to its website, Sotheby’s Realty has 10 homes listed for sale in Sandhurst. Asking prices range from R7.95 million to R47 million.
The latter boasts four bedrooms, four garages, two “cloakrooms”, eight reception areas, a plunge pool, a sauna and a steam room.
The few people who are on the suburb’s neatly paved, pothole-free streets are not keen to talk to journalists.
These are security guards, domestic workers and groundskeepers, all of whom say they don’t want to talk about the wealth that surrounds them for fear of losing their jobs.
Johan Roos is overseeing the construction of a 3 000m² home in Sandhurst for a private owner.
He says the three-storey house will have a bowling alley “for relaxing”, a tennis court, and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
The construction will take about two years to complete and is one of the biggest projects he has ever worked on.
Roos says many of his clients want their homes to look like “overseas houses”, or those with a more contemporary style.
When City Press arrived at his construction site, workers were busy building “standard” 6m-high perimeter walls.
“They like their privacy,” Roos said of his clients.
He isn’t surprised by the amount of money people have in the area. Most of his work has been in Sandhurst and Houghton Estate, another suburb in northern Joburg where 141 households earn more than R2.4 million a year.
“I like my job and I like my clients. But for me personally, this house is too big. I like my farm lifestyle,” says Roos.

Architectural firm, Nico van der Meulen Architects, was commissioned to design this home according to the owner’s specifications. The brief to the architect was to create a single-storey home with an urban feel. In order to achieve this, the architect updated the 1950’s house and converted it into a timeless modern space with a better flow. Alterations and additions were made to the original building to allow for four bedrooms and large entertaining areas. The single-storey building allows for large double volume spaces and flat roofs have been used in the alteration to keep vertical expansion in mind for the client’s future. As a result of an impeccable renovation, the house is divided into public and private spaces. This single family contemporary home is located on a steep sloping site on the foot of Table Mountain bordering Table Mountain National Park in Oranjezicht, a suburb in Cape Town, South Africa.

“In order to achieve the least impact on the site, the house is comprised of five pavilions which are tucked into the sloping terrain surrounded by the existing natural fynbos which stretches from the mountain slopes above the site to the road below. The five pavilions mimic the lie of the land and lie like leaves that have fallen down the mountain.
The pavilions are in sympathy with the surrounding context in order to achieve as little visual impact as possible on the existing natural landscape.
Habitable spaces have been created by using the age-old tradition of inserting stone walls into the landscape, thereby creating usable terraces and platforms.
The colours of these stone walls emulate those of the cliffs of Table Mountain above and its presence anchors the design into the landscape.
The wavy roof is like a piece of the site lifted off the ground, settling over the habitable spaces and platforms. The concrete roof curves in both directions and takes its cue from the curved nature of the cliff faces on Table Mountain above and the contouring slope of the site below. Project Description:

Carla & Stefan Antoni have created a dreamy sky-high home that captures the feel of the sea below by using levels to spectacular effect.
Their growing family is what forced the couple to demolish their bachelor pad and build a larger home. The result incorporates Stefan’s dual-level penthouse, including two en-suite bedrooms, a living area and a kitchen on the first level, a studio, third bedroom and garage on the lower level, and an apartment underneath. On the roof, is a swimming pool and terrace, as well as the magnificent SKY BAR containing a cocktail bar and entertainment area.
Stefan’s bold control of levels and layering has resulted in a visually sculptural interior. They wanted the feel of the apartment to be a contrast between laid-back comfort and slick sophistication. Crème-de-la-crème marble slabs were used for the floors and the woods were lime-washed to give them a ‘beachy’ feel. Accent colours were kept to greys and aquamarines.
Adam Court of OKHA Interiors created a range of furniture using the Antoni home as a canvas. “We wanted to create a relaxed but sophisticated look; one that was not only about individual pieces but about creating a totally new experience.
The result is a balance between the functional and the eye-catching, from white-leather sofas to ethnic pieces found on exotic travels. David Reade glass pieces sit alongside stacked cubic frames, together with cashmere throws and deep pile rugs.
“We wanted to break free from the mould, create a piece of poetry that plays on light, space and geometry, and balances the primal quality of raw surfaces with modern elements,” Stefan concludes.

MALL OF ZIMBABWE - Zimbabwe's US$100 Million Shopping Center in Luxury Borrowdale Harare

Acting President Joice Mujuru yesterday commissioned the construction of a multi-million dollar shopping complex, the Mall of Zimbabwe Millennium Park, in Borrowdale.
The project which is worth US$100 million is a partnership between the City of Harare and three investors - Augur Investments, McCormick Property Development and West Group.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, VP Mujuru said the shopping mall would decongest the city centre.
She urged foreign investors to grab opportunities presented by Government.
"If contemporary planning and designs are strategically executed, this may proffer a solution to the challenges pertaining to the interaction and interconnection between and among people in their places of residence, workplace, shopping areas, places of relaxation and worship and above all how they access this range of service in a convenient manner."

VP Mujuru said the project was important as it would create more than 1 000 jobs during construction and more as businesses start operations at the mall.
McCormick Property Development managing director Mr Jason McCormick described Zimbabwe as a safe investment destination.

"I have to admit that when we first arrived in Harare last year for the first time in a decade, we were highly skeptical of whether Zimbabwe was ready for a development of the nature that we as a company were looking to develop. I have to admit that we were absolutely dumbstruck with what we found within a kilometre of the airport."

He said the bad image presented by the Western media had painted a bad picture of Zimbabwe.
Augur Investments representative Mr Ken Sharpe said their operations would conform to the country's indigenisation laws.
"Yes, we have indigenisation and it is not land grab. The problem is that we have a media that was putting things out of context. We will comply with the Zimbabwe (laws) as enshrined in the country's Constitution but as we speak the shareholding is 50-50 between Augur Investments and McCormick Property Development," he said.

Several Cabinet ministers, senior Government officials and Harare council officials witnessed the event. The construction of the mall is expected to start in six months time and be completed within 16 months.

Lebohang “Lebo M” Morake,^[1] known professionally as Lebo M, is a South African composer most famous for arranging and performing music for theLion King movies and stage productions. He was recommended to Disney by Hans Zimmer, the score composer of The Lion King, and was later hired to form and conduct the African choir that sang for the movies. His voice is the first voice heard in the beginning of the film, singing the now famous chant (often considered synonymous with the film's image in popular culture) over the opening sequence. He also contributed to the sequel to the film's soundtrack, Rhythm of the Pride Lands, and the film's direct-to-video sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.

Born May 20, 1964 in Apartheid-ridden Soweto and inspired by Nelson Mandela, he spent years working hard in the slums and then in Los Angeles in a variety of jobs, including begging and serving atMcDonald's. He was exiled from South Africa in 1979, but returned 20 years later. He lives with his family in Johannesburg and Los Angeles. He founded the Lebo M Foundation and Till Dawn Entertainment.

Controversy

On 5 March 2005, Lebo M said in his acceptance speech at the Naledi Theatre Awards that he was upset at being seated at the back row of the function and that the theatre industry did not recognise black people.

“I found it unfortunate that I produced the biggest show in South Africa and am in the last row. I feel insulted. I got invited to the Oscars and I have a Grammy,” Lebo M said in his acceptance speech. The response attained was one of uncertainty, as much of the audience accepted that he was joking until he informed them that he was not.

The comments were not well met. Nicola Danby, CEO of Business and Arts South Africa, said: “His timing was not fantastic. The fact that he opened a real grievance with a whine about where he was sitting trivialised his comments."

It was argued that Lebo M did have a seat reserved for him in the front row, and that he failed to arrive early and was seated at the back as not to disrupt the performance.
