Cape Town-based studio Mountain House by Van Der Merwe Miszewski Architects has recently completed the Mountain House project.
This single family contemporary home is located on a steep sloping site on the foot of Table Mountain bordering Table Mountain National Park in Oranjezicht, a suburb in Cape Town, South Africa.

Mountain House by Van Der merwe Miszewski Architects:
“In order to achieve the least impact on the site, the house is comprised of five pavilions which are tucked into the sloping terrain surrounded by the existing natural fynbos which stretches from the mountain slopes above the site to the road below. The five pavilions mimic the lie of the land and lie like leaves that have fallen down the mountain.
The pavilions are in sympathy with the surrounding context in order to achieve as little visual impact as possible on the existing natural landscape.
Habitable spaces have been created by using the age-old tradition of inserting stone walls into the landscape, thereby creating usable terraces and platforms.
The colours of these stone walls emulate those of the cliffs of Table Mountain above and its presence anchors the design into the landscape.
The wavy roof is like a piece of the site lifted off the ground, settling over the habitable spaces and platforms. The concrete roof curves in both directions and takes its cue from the curved nature of the cliff faces on Table Mountain above and the contouring slope of the site below. The roof therefore simulates the curve of the mountain face and the lie of the land.”

Project Description:

Carla & Stefan Antoni have created a dreamy sky-high home that captures the feel of the sea below by using levels to spectacular effect.
Their growing family is what forced the couple to demolish their bachelor pad and build a larger home. The result incorporates Stefan’s dual-level penthouse, including two en-suite bedrooms, a living area and a kitchen on the first level, a studio, third bedroom and garage on the lower level, and an apartment underneath. On the roof, is a swimming pool and terrace, as well as the magnificent SKY BAR containing a cocktail bar and entertainment area.
Stefan’s bold control of levels and layering has resulted in a visually sculptural interior. They wanted the feel of the apartment to be a contrast between laid-back comfort and slick sophistication. Crème-de-la-crème marble slabs were used for the floors and the woods were lime-washed to give them a ‘beachy’ feel. Accent colours were kept to greys and aquamarines.
Adam Court of OKHA Interiors created a range of furniture using the Antoni home as a canvas. “We wanted to create a relaxed but sophisticated look; one that was not only about individual pieces but about creating a totally new experience.
The result is a balance between the functional and the eye-catching, from white-leather sofas to ethnic pieces found on exotic travels. David Reade glass pieces sit alongside stacked cubic frames, together with cashmere throws and deep pile rugs.
“We wanted to break free from the mould, create a piece of poetry that plays on light, space and geometry, and balances the primal quality of raw surfaces with modern elements,” Stefan concludes.

MALL OF ZIMBABWE - Zimbabwe's US$100 Million Shopping Center in Luxury Borrowdale Harare

Acting President Joice Mujuru yesterday commissioned the construction of a multi-million dollar shopping complex, the Mall of Zimbabwe Millennium Park, in Borrowdale.
The project which is worth US$100 million is a partnership between the City of Harare and three investors - Augur Investments, McCormick Property Development and West Group.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, VP Mujuru said the shopping mall would decongest the city centre.
She urged foreign investors to grab opportunities presented by Government.
"If contemporary planning and designs are strategically executed, this may proffer a solution to the challenges pertaining to the interaction and interconnection between and among people in their places of residence, workplace, shopping areas, places of relaxation and worship and above all how they access this range of service in a convenient manner."

VP Mujuru said the project was important as it would create more than 1 000 jobs during construction and more as businesses start operations at the mall.
McCormick Property Development managing director Mr Jason McCormick described Zimbabwe as a safe investment destination.

"I have to admit that when we first arrived in Harare last year for the first time in a decade, we were highly skeptical of whether Zimbabwe was ready for a development of the nature that we as a company were looking to develop. I have to admit that we were absolutely dumbstruck with what we found within a kilometre of the airport."

He said the bad image presented by the Western media had painted a bad picture of Zimbabwe.
Augur Investments representative Mr Ken Sharpe said their operations would conform to the country's indigenisation laws.
"Yes, we have indigenisation and it is not land grab. The problem is that we have a media that was putting things out of context. We will comply with the Zimbabwe (laws) as enshrined in the country's Constitution but as we speak the shareholding is 50-50 between Augur Investments and McCormick Property Development," he said.

Several Cabinet ministers, senior Government officials and Harare council officials witnessed the event. The construction of the mall is expected to start in six months time and be completed within 16 months.

Lebohang “Lebo M” Morake,^[1] known professionally as Lebo M, is a South African composer most famous for arranging and performing music for theLion King movies and stage productions. He was recommended to Disney by Hans Zimmer, the score composer of The Lion King, and was later hired to form and conduct the African choir that sang for the movies. His voice is the first voice heard in the beginning of the film, singing the now famous chant (often considered synonymous with the film's image in popular culture) over the opening sequence. He also contributed to the sequel to the film's soundtrack, Rhythm of the Pride Lands, and the film's direct-to-video sequel The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.

Born May 20, 1964 in Apartheid-ridden Soweto and inspired by Nelson Mandela, he spent years working hard in the slums and then in Los Angeles in a variety of jobs, including begging and serving atMcDonald's. He was exiled from South Africa in 1979, but returned 20 years later. He lives with his family in Johannesburg and Los Angeles. He founded the Lebo M Foundation and Till Dawn Entertainment.

Controversy

On 5 March 2005, Lebo M said in his acceptance speech at the Naledi Theatre Awards that he was upset at being seated at the back row of the function and that the theatre industry did not recognise black people.

“I found it unfortunate that I produced the biggest show in South Africa and am in the last row. I feel insulted. I got invited to the Oscars and I have a Grammy,” Lebo M said in his acceptance speech. The response attained was one of uncertainty, as much of the audience accepted that he was joking until he informed them that he was not.

The comments were not well met. Nicola Danby, CEO of Business and Arts South Africa, said: “His timing was not fantastic. The fact that he opened a real grievance with a whine about where he was sitting trivialised his comments."

It was argued that Lebo M did have a seat reserved for him in the front row, and that he failed to arrive early and was seated at the back as not to disrupt the performance.
