August Medical/Dental Malpractice Status Checks and November Settlements Scheduled

Chief Judge T. Arthur Richie, Jr announced today that Medical/Dental Malpractice Status Checks will be scheduled for August 4 and 5, 2009 at the Complex Litigation Center, 333 South Sixth Street in Las Vegas.

The status checks will take place between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day and will include scheduling for the upcoming November 2009 Medical/Dental Malpractice Settlement Conference Marathon.

The November Settlement Marathon will focus on 131 cases out of compliance with the requirements of NRS 41A. The court intends to make a significant and meaningful attempt to resolve these cases during these settlement conferences.

The Nevada Supreme Court has approved the assignment of Senior Judges to conduct the November Settlement Marathon. A similar marathon between May and June 2009 allowed the court to settle 37 pending cases, which released 75 judicial trial days to take other cases to trial.

Las Vegas Justice Court Reassigns Civil and Summary Eviction Cases

Effective July 1, 2009, all civil and summary eviction cases in the Las Vegas Justice Court will be reassigned to Judges Saragosa and Sullivan in Departments 4 and 12 as follows:

Cases from Departments 1, 3, and 6 shall be reassigned to Department 4.
Cases from Departments 5, 9, and 11 shall be reassigned to Department 12.
Cases from Department 7 shall be randomly reassigned to both Departments 4 and 12.

Any hearings that are presently scheduled on these reassigned cases will take place at their scheduled dates and times but such hearings will be held in either Department 4 or 12’s courtrooms. Notices to this effect will be placed in the courtrooms of the Departments to which these cases are presently assigned.

District Court Relocates Two Civil Departments To Phoenix Building

District Court Judges Abbi Silver and Kathleen Delaney will begin hearing cases Monday (June 29) on the 11th Floor of the Phoenix Building located at 330 S. Third Street. Chambers and judicial staff offices will be located on the same floor. Judges Silver and Delaney will not hold court Friday (June 26) in the Regional Justice Center to allow them and their staff to move to the Phoenix Building.

The opening of the Phoenix Building’s 11th Floor follows the completion of a six-month remodel to create new chambers for Judges Silver and Delaney, offices for judicial staff, as well as offices for the Senior Judge Department.

Clark County Court Marshals will be assigned to the 11th floor to provide security for judges and court guests. The 11th floor also includes meeting rooms to allow judges to conduct settlement conferences, much like the recently successful Medical Malpractice Settlement Marathon that allowed the District Court to adjudicate and close 33 complex medical malpractice cases in May.

Judge Kathleen Delaney Named to Business Court

Chief Judge T. Arthur Ritchie, Jr. has assigned Judge Kathleen Delaney to serve as the Eighth Judicial District Court’s third business court judge. Delaney joins Judges Elizabeth Gonzalez and Mark Denton as the District Court judges assigned to hear business matters.

The addition of a third District Court judge to hear business court matters follows the Nevada Supreme Court’s amendment of local rules of practice EDCR 1.33 and EDCR 1.61 to require three judges to adjudicate business court matters in southern Nevada. The Supreme Court outlined the rule change in ADKT 398.

“Judge Delaney will help the District Court focus on business court matters and further reduce the adjudication time of important matters that often must be handled in a matter of days,” said Chief Judge Ritchie.

Delaney earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1990. Her prior experience includes gaming, corporate and labor and employment law. Before joining the District Court bench in January 2009, Judge Delaney served in the Nevada Attorney General’s office as a Senior Deputy Attorney General in the Bureau of Consumer Protection. She also served as general counsel for the Treasure Island Corp., as the assistant general counsel to The Mirage, and specialized in labor law and litigation at the private firm Hill, Farrer & Burrill in Los Angeles.

“I am pleased to be able to further the Supreme Court’s goal of improving the adjudication of business court matters in Clark County,” said Judge Delaney. The new assignment takes effect July 23, 2009. Delaney will hear business court cases on the 11th Floor of the Phoenix Building, 330 S. Third Street.

Proposed Ordinance to Add Civil Filing Fees

An amendment has been proposed to the Clark County Code to add a new section to Title 2, Chapter 2.32 of the Clark County Code to require the imposition of a $20 filing fee in certain cases to offset a portion of the costs of providing new District Court judges. Las Vegas Township Justice Court Adds Civil Case Lookup

LAS VEGAS – The Las Vegas Township Justice Court has added a civil case search feature on the Clark County Courts court case lookup website located at http://courtgate.coca.co.clark.nv.us. The Civil Search allows attorneys, litigants and the public to access civil cases in the Justice Court by case number, case name or party name.

The civil case search gives the public access to various case types, including: Civil, Confession of Judgment, Small Claims, Landlord/Tenant, Traffic or Misdemeanor Citation and Traffic Citation Juvenile. A help feature describes case types in further detail.

The ability to search for civil cases adds to the Justice Court’s traffic and criminal calendar case search features. In addition, individuals needing to fulfill court requirements to attend driver education courses can arrange to attend DUI and Traffic Schools online through the Justice Court’s web site at http://www.clarkcountycourts.us.

“This is just one more step in our efforts to increase the public’s access to information in the Justice Court,” said Las Vegas Township Justice Court Chief Judge Ann Zimmerman.

Regional Justice Center Remodel Closes North Entrance

Construction on the remodel of the north entrance to the Regional Justice Center at 200 Lewis Avenue will begin this week. Effective Tuesday, May 26 @ 6 PM, the north entrance will be completely closed down to all traffic until approximately June 22. Signs will be posted directing visitors to the south entrance at 201 Clark Avenue.

Memory Stick Pricing to Increase

The cost preparing a memory stick for Family Court video transcripts will increase effective May 26, 2009. The cost of the service will be $5 per hearing and $7 per memory stick, according to Assistant Clerk of the Court Steve Grierson. Drug Court Graduation Features 500th Drug-Free Baby

WHERE: Choices Group Inc., 800 South Valley View Boulevard, Las Vegas.

EVENT: Choices Group, the substance abuse treatment services provider for the Clark County Courts, will host a Drug Court graduation for individuals who have successfully completed various Drug Court programs. In addition, the court will honor a mother in the dependency drug court program who gave birth to the court’s 500th Drug–Free Baby. The dependency drug court strives to help expectant mothers remain drug-free and encourage them to receive pre-natal care for their babies.
