In with the new. Hand-me-downs that is. I love second hand items. I love cleaning out my closet (no Eminem jokes, please), and I love getting things other people don’t want anymore and finding new ways to include them in my wardrobe. This skirt is a second hand item, and I’ve had fun pairing it with different things. This outfit, so far, is my favorite way to wear it. The best part of this skirt is that it has pockets.

The Michael Kors boots are actually the only somewhat new thing I’m wearing. My headband is from World Market a long time ago, my shirt and tights are both old Target purchases, my wallet is also a sort of hand-me-down, and my favorite watch that I wear almost every day is at least a year old and getting cheaper every time I check for it on Amazon (link below). Thanks for reading that extra long run-on sentence.

Unrelated to fashion, I just got back from a mountain vacation with almost all of my favorite Loffers. I basically just packed pajamas and books, so imagine how my week went. Yeah, it was pretty fantastic.

And I don’t mean the orthodontic kind. This is the first hat you’ve seen on this blog. I never wear hats because I don’t think they suit me very well. Like sunglasses, and also belts around the waist. They don’t look good on me, and I don’t feel comfortable in them. This fancy cashmere Catbird beanie was a gift from my parents, and I really love it. Besides the random instances when I try on hats in stores and stare at myself in the mirror wishing to myself that I could pull off the look, this is the only hat to grace my head.

It’s been an incredibly mild winter so far, so I can’t say I wear it for practicality sake. Unless you count covering up unwashed hair practical. I’ve been really glad to have it on those days though. Mostly because I’m incredibly lazy when it comes to hair upkeep. Haircuts are few and far between, and I like my hair best on the third day after washing it. So there’s that.

I used to wear hats regularly, because I played softball for so many years. Not only were there ridiculous looking ball caps involved, there were also visors with velcro straps, which I absolutely despise now, but I’ll admit that at the time, they were nice because they didn’t mess up your pony tail in between batting turns. Lots of hat and helmut changes which made for a lot of re-doing ponytails. Big problems.

On a different hat related note, my brother had to tell me what snap backs were. I hate it when that happens because nothing makes me feel older than not being in the know about things that I should probably already know. I’ve also just now gotten to the point where I don’t have to look up what the acronym “smh” stands for. Enough feeling sorry for myself. Here’s my new hat that I love, guys.

P.S. I realize that the beanie is unavailable, but I wanted to link anyway because they’ve restocked it before. And my shirt is from Target forever ago.

So a few weeks ago, Caleb picked out these clothes to wear to work, but it didn’t happen and so he left them out for me to stare at all day. The next day I decided to try them on, and the rest is history. Which sounds a lot more dramatic than it really is. But it made it to my blog as you can see.

Also, in trying them on I made the great discovery that his button down shirts fit me perfectly, and thus adding about ten more shirts in different solid colors to my wardrobe. Thanks, husband. I don’t know why I didn’t think to try them on sooner. Better late than never though, right?

A recent post from my favorite Man Repeller titled Man to (wo)Man got me looking in the men’s clothing section online just as much, if not more than the women’s. It resulted in purchasing a men’s button down (you’ll see it featured in a post soon enough), and I lost sleep thinking of all the different ways to wear it. That’s how excited I was.

Don’t get me wrong, I love ladywear, and looking feminine and girly, but it’s a fun change to mix in fancy menswear once in a while. If you’d like to read more on this subject, go read the Man Repeller’s post that I linked above. You’ll see photos of some well dressed men, and you can read interesting thoughts about women dressing like men. It’s great, you’ll love it.

One time I jumped out of an airplane while wearing these boots. It was in the spring of 09′, in honor of my friend’s birthday. She talked me into it. Looking back, I can’t believe I agreed to it, let alone paid 200-ish non-refundable dollars for it. I almost wet my pants when we got to the airplane hanger in who knows where South Carolina. Our “training video” which was supposed to walk us through everything from the ride up, preparing to jump, jumping, and floating back down, turned out to be no more than a five minute tutorial by an employee who used a picnic table to represent the airplane we’d soon be jumping from.

We waited for our turn and watched other people land safely. Actually, I think we waited so long that I was pretty bored by the time we suited up and got on the plane. It took a while to get up to the right height, and I couldn’t decide if the fact that my tandem instructor fell asleep on the way up made me feel more terrified, or reassured that it wasn’t a big deal. I remember the door opening and thinking “Crap. This is it.” There was no backing out, since you’re strapped to a person who will jump out of the plane and take you with him whether you like it or not. It was a crazy feeling. Overall it was really fun, and something I’m not sorry I did, but I wouldn’t do it again. The ground is good to me.

I’m a sentimental person. I have several trunks full of things that hold some sort of memory or give a nostalgic feeling when I see them. These boots are so worn down that my feet get wet if I walk on wet ground. They don’t even hold the proper shape, but I can’t get rid of them. If you survive a fear like skydiving in a pair of boots, you’re allowed to keep them forever, right?

As for the rest of this outfit, my headband is from the ever so talented Emily Angell of Borrowed Lark on Etsy. My t-shirt and necklace were gifts, the clutch is from August Lily Florist, and my jeans are an old Gap favorite.

I’m not going to lie. I don’t have much to say about this outfit in its entirety. I feel like it’s pretty straight forward. I just want to talk about this top, because it’s new and I love it.

I got it at Victoria’s Secret during their semi-annual sale. Before my bff moved to NYC, we shopped the semi-annual sale at VS whenever it came around. I haven’t been pretty much since she moved, but I was encouraged to do so when I heard they had cute clothes in their sale section. It’s ombre, which is cool I guess. I see ombre all over the internet. Everything from hair, clothes, nails, and also home decor. I don’t have anything else that is ombre, though if I were to ever put color on these locks, I think the most low maintenance hair choice would be ombre color. The material is really light too, so even though it’s long sleeves, its sheerness will make it wearable at least for most of the summer here in North Carolina. The beading on it is really fun too, and it’s mesmerizing if you’re 6 months old like my nephew. Plus it’s yellow, and who doesn’t like yellow shirts?

Caleb almost always chooses his outfits the night before, and if I’m near, he’ll ask my opinion. “What should I wear? You think I should wear those pants with that shirt? Men’s style is different, you can’t wear black with brown,” are sentences I often hear during our menswear conversations. The only thing I never encourage him to wear is this scarf.

It’s not because it doesn’t look good on him. It’s because I want to wear it myself. Purely selfish motives behind my scheme in convincing him to choose any other scarf but that one. He caught on to my tricks right away, so it never works, but I still try anyway and hope that he likes me enough to share it on occasion.

Clearly he does, because I’m wearing it in this post. He got it over a month ago, and it’s been an ongoing battle ever since. If it weren’t the softest cashmere I’ve ever felt, and such a nice neutral shade of gray, it wouldn’t be so tempting. As you can see here, and more recently here, this scarf isn’t the first thing of my husband’s that I’ve wanted to claim as my own. Unfortunately for me, I have nothing in my closet to exchange for the things I want to steal. I don’t know why, but when I offer to let him wear my ombre yellow sheer blouse with sequins on it in exchange for the scarf, he never accepts. Weird.
