Some days my pen feels awkward in my hand and the letters look messy. I think this is all wrong. I notice uneven lines, shaky curves, and mistakes that seem too obvious to ignore. Then I look back six months later and it feels alive. The strokes I doubted seem to hum with energy and care. I am my own harshest critic, but time shows me what I could not see. The progress is quiet, slow, and steady, but it is there, written in ink across the pages of my work.

I love watching ink leave the nib and sit on the paper. A small pause, a tilt of the pen, a gentle flow across the page. Each movement matters. Each line is both quiet and thrilling. Calligraphy slows time and sharpens attention. It is my conversation with paper where focus meets joy. I often lose myself in that simple act of making a letter. The subtle scratch of the nib, the way the ink pools slightly at the end of a curve, the gentle sway of a flourish—they are small details that fill me with satisfaction.

I learned long ago at university that excellence comes from giving time to something. Consistent effort makes a difference. I apply the same principle now to my calligraphy. I set aside time each day to practice and I can already see the change. Letters feel steadier, strokes more confident, ideas flow more smoothly. Even small sessions bring noticeable improvement. Repeating basic shapes, practicing the same flourish again and again, sometimes feels tedious, but each repetition deepens my control and sharpens my eye. I have begun to notice subtler improvements as well, in rhythm, spacing, and overall balance.

Every piece carries my effort, patience, and learning. Comparing my work over months is surprising. Mistakes I once noticed now show rhythm and character. My hand grows more confident and my style clearer. Each page is a small story written in ink and time. I can see where my focus was strongest, where I experimented, and where I simply allowed the pen to move freely. These pages are more than practice—they are a record of growth, a mirror of dedication.

Calligraphy is about presence. The scratch of the nib, the slow spread of ink, the shapes of letters. These small sensations quiet my mind and keep me present. It is not about praise or perfection but about the joy of creating with attention and care. I notice the little things—a smooth curve, a consistent slant, a flourish that surprises me—and it reminds me that improvement can be immediate as well as gradual. That awareness brings quiet excitement to each session.

The messy moments are necessary. They are proof that I am learning. I see progress not in one leap but in small steps. Time and attention turn practice into growth and love into skill. Noticing improvement as it happens makes the journey exciting. My calligraphy is becoming a mirror of my effort and patience, a quiet story of what can happen when focus meets passion. The ink on the page is more than letters. It is a record of curiosity, care, and joy. Each day spent with pen and paper reminds me that skill is built with persistence, and beauty emerges from devotion.

Portfolio photography is an important part of showing calligraphy professionally. Each image gives a window into the work, highlighting the care, detail, and artistry in every piece. From envelopes and placecards to finished projects, good photographs let viewers see the flow and texture of the letters.

Studio and workspace images add context. They show the tools, materials, and environment behind the work, giving a sense of the space where creativity happens. Combining these shots with images of the pieces themselves creates a full picture of the craft, balancing the artwork with its surroundings.

Including portraits or environmental shots adds a human element. These images show that the work is created with care and dedication, making the portfolio feel authentic and approachable. Together, portraits, studio shots, and work images form a professional, cohesive presentation.

Composition, lighting, and perspective are key. Balanced lighting brings out textures and details, while thoughtful framing keeps the focus on the work. Backgrounds should support the piece without distracting from it. Each photograph should feel clean, polished, and engaging, letting the craft speak for itself.

A portfolio is always evolving. New work, improved techniques, and refined compositions can be added over time. This keeps the portfolio current and reflects growth and development in the craft. Over time, it becomes more than a collection of images—it shows practice, skill, and professional progress.

Portfolio photography also plays a role in professional presence online. Well-chosen images communicate attention to detail, quality, and professionalism. They allow clients or viewers to connect with the work visually, creating a lasting impression even before any direct interaction.

At its core, portfolio photography is part of the craft itself. Images capture the rhythm, flow, and care put into each piece. They provide a visual experience of the work, letting viewers appreciate the artistry even if they can’t hold the physical objects.

A well-curated portfolio—combining work, studio, and contextual images—becomes a complete showcase. It reflects both skill and dedication while giving insight into the creative process, making the craft accessible and inviting for anyone who sees it.

As scribes are becoming rarer and rarer in todays world, I often wonder if I’m one of the last calligraphers. The use of script or cursive (running writing) have been slowly fading since the typewriter arrived, and today, many children can’t even read what we once learned as normal handwriting.

While I’m of the generation that learned cursive at school, even within Australia, each state had its own style adopted by the education system. The letters I practiced as a child might look very different from someone just across the border. It made me aware early on that handwriting isn’t just a skill—it’s a local tradition.

My heart belongs to Copperplate Script, with its elegant loops and flowing lines. For me, calligraphy is that one thing that puts me into a flow where time disappears. I love it when I think of refilling my cup of coffee, and I look down and see the result of just hours of watching ink flow onto and into paper. It’s not about saving a dying art or carrying a mission. It’s about being completely present in a profession that I love.

Yet even I face modern quirks. Knowing what I know about the decline of script as a commonly accepted form of writing, I am aware that many people today may not be familiar with it. This is why my envelope addresses are always written in ALL CAPS. On placecards, I add the surname in capitals beneath the name, so that even if a guest doesn’t immediately recognise their name in script, the surname gives them a pause to take a second look.

I’m also of the belief that the world runs on seasons and cycles. There’s little to encourage the teaching of cursive to every school child anymore. Sometimes I wonder—am I one of the last calligraphers? Will calligraphy even exist as a profession in 100 years?

Am I one of the last calligraphers?

I do believe that cursive calligraphy will outlive me as an acceptable form of communication. My generation may have had educational learning in writing in cursive, but the passion for script still exists.

Calligraphy feels like a quiet rebellion against speed and machines—a reminder that communication can be art, not just tools. Even as the world speeds up, I can slow down, shape each curve, and watch time itself pour into my work.

Ultimately, I may not be preserving a dying art for the world—but I am preserving it for myself. And perhaps, in that simple love of flowing ink and elegant forms, there is hope that others will stumble across the beauty of script and continue the tradition in their own way.

Maybe I am one of the last calligraphers, but I am not THE last.

There comes a moment when a passion quietly asks a serious question: Are you ready to treat me like a professional? Is this a Passion or a Profession? I have realised that I have reached that moment with calligraphy.

Loving something is easy. Turning that love into disciplined practice is something else entirely. A profession asks for consistency. It asks you to show up week after week, even when inspiration is taking a leisurely stroll somewhere else.

For me, becoming professional begins (and ends) with ensuring that I devote sufficient time to my craft.

I have created a personal system that allows me to devote a set amount of time each week to developing my craft and the work surrounding it. Two-thirds of those hours are dedicated purely to calligraphy practice. Pen in hand, line after line, letter after letter. The remaining allocation of hours are focused on enterprise groundwork: the practical tasks that slowly build the foundations of my growing profession.

At this stage, I am still early in the journey. I am not yet opening my doors to the public as a calligrapher for hire. The work I am doing now is quieter and largely unseen. Practice. Preparation. Structure. I call this period of time “tensionining the spring”. For today, there may be other things for me to do, but I do believe that the time will come in the future, should I live long enough.

I need to know that I can rely on my own discipline and commitment. That is why I am building a calligraphy studio. Not simply a room with a desk, but a place where my time-block system can function properly. A space where those hours each week are protected and purposeful.

This process reminds me of something I learned at university: if you put the time into a project, the results will come. Not magically, and not immediately, but steadily.

Passion lights the spark.

Professional practice keeps the flame alive.

Last year, I took an unused storage room and slowly converted it into my dream “studio space.” I named it Mr Snugglebunny’s Office. Mr Snugglebunny is the weighted bunny rabbit I sometimes cuddle. Instead of calling it an Office or Studio, which felt too formal, I let the room be whimsical and flexible. He’s always around, offering cuddles between me and the desk edge during close-up work. Over time, I’ve shifted furniture while working around three existing cabinets. After a year of sitting here every day, I feel it is now time to formalise this room as my dream calligraphy studio.

Spending every day here showed me what truly mattered in a studio: clear vision, a comfortable workspace, and lighting that supports both focus and mood. The first thing I addressed was how light fell across my desk.

Natural light first, then careful lamp placement. I placed my desk facing a large window into the room. I had romanticised darker studios, but seeing the sky mattered more. Morning sunlight falls across the page, helping me see each stroke clearly while supporting focus and calm. It even triggers chemicals that boost mood. In the afternoon, a focused lamp angled from the opposite side of my writing hand prevents shadows, keeps hairlines crisp, and allows longer sessions without eye strain. Proper light transforms both comfort and the quality of work.

As for your comfortable workspace, get the biggest desk you can. I got mine from Amazon (the delivery man carried it upstairs), and I built it in the room. A $50 cutting mat from eBay protects the surface, flattens curled paper, and offers storage underneath for a few frequently accessed forms. Large, clear surfaces and accessible storage make long sessions smoother and more focused.

Two bedside cabinets behind me serve as storage, keeping the desk clear for work. A clear work area and a separate “stuff side” make tools accessible but surfaces uncluttered, so creativity flows freely. Organising zones helps maintain focus and efficiency, letting materials and active work coexist without chaos.

In closing, I must add that I have seen the bottleneck areas as information, rather than problems. For example, I realised certain inks were always piling up at the end of my desk because I hadn’t stood up, opened the cupboard doors, and put them away—nearly every day. Now, my most-used ink supplies are within easy reach on top of my storage cabinet. Let it evolve. Time reveals the blockages and solves them.

Calligraphy is more than beautiful handwriting—it is an art with distinct skill standards. Knowing the levels of calligraphers helps clients choose the right artist and guides calligraphers in their career progression. There are four main levels, from hobbyists to masters.

– Hobbyists

Hobbyists form the foundation of the calligraphy world. At this level, passion drives the work. Hobbyists experiment with various styles, tools, and inks, creating personal projects, gifts, or practice pieces. Precision and consistency may vary, but their creativity and love for the craft shine through. Many hobbyists eventually decide to take commissions, progressing to professional levels.

$ Calligrapher for Hire

These calligraphers usually represent new freelance entrants in the professional world. These calligraphers are often advanced hobbyists or recently trained students. Most of their work involves wedding envelopes, placecards, and basic commissioned projects. At this stage, the focus is on consistency, reliability, and developing client experience. While nothing is overly fancy, the work reflects high-level hobbyist or student quality. This is where calligraphers earn their stripes and build a reputation.

$$ Freelance Calligraphers

Many calligraphers aspire to reach Level 2. Freelance calligraphers handle more personalized and complex projects, including custom invitations, certificates, and live-event calligraphy. Work at this level is polished and client-focused. Freelancers refine their style, speed, and precision, combining artistry with professional responsibility. Their creations are often memorable and expressive, attracting repeat clients and recognition.

$$$ Calligraphy Masters

At the top tier, calligraphy masters produce sensational, highly refined work. Their pieces combine flawless technique with distinctive artistic style. Many maintain a strong social media presence, inspiring other calligraphers and attracting high-profile commissions. Masters often set trends within the calligraphy community, demonstrating the pinnacle of skill, creativity, and professionalism.

Understanding the levels of calligraphers clarifies the differences in skill, experience, and output. Whether you are seeking an artist for personal projects or large commissions, knowing these levels ensures you find the right calligrapher for your needs.

A project-based approach is the most reliable way to assess a calligrapher’s skills. Look for a calligrapher that is already producing similar work. Titles alone don’t guarantee the ability to complete a specific commission.

To someone outside of the profession, the oblique pen can look unusual. The nib sits off to the side, held in place by a small metal flange. It seems eccentric. In truth, it is simply intelligent design.

Reason One: To see what is coming out of the nib

Calligraphers use an oblique pen because it improves visibility. When writing scripts such as Copperplate, the thick and thin strokes depend on precise pressure. With a straight pen holder, the hand can block the view of the nib. The oblique holder shifts the nib outward. This small adjustment allows the calligrapher to clearly see the exact point where ink transfers from nib to paper. Seeing that moment improves control.

Reason Two: Weighting of the nib

The angled position also supports correct alignment. Pointed nibs create contrast by spreading under pressure. If the nib meets the page at the wrong angle, one tine can catch or dig into the paper. The oblique holder keeps both tines balanced, so the ink flows smoothly and the strokes remain clean.

Reason Three: Positioning of the nib

There is also a practical benefit. Traditional scripts are written on a consistent slant, often around fifty-five degrees. Without an oblique holder, the writer must twist the wrist to achieve that angle. Over time, this can create strain. The oblique pen allows the hand to remain in a more natural position while the nib maintains the correct slant.

The design is not decorative. It is the result of refinement. Nineteenth-century penmen developed tools that increased efficiency and consistency. The oblique holder endured because it solved real problems.

What appears unusual at first glance is simply a tool shaped by experience. The oblique pen allows the calligrapher to see clearly, control pressure precisely, and write with confidence. It may look different, but its purpose is straightforward: to help ink meet paper beautifully and with intention.

Are you looking to hire a calligrapher?

Whether it’s for invitations, signage, or custom artwork, understanding the process can make your experience smooth and enjoyable. As a freelance calligrapher just starting out in 2026, I’m doing a lot of research how to create the clearest and most professional workflow for clients.

Step 1: Define Your Project

Before you hire a calligrapher, clarify what you need. Are you creating wedding invitations, event signage, or a personal art piece? Being specific helps the calligrapher understand your vision and provide accurate guidance. Many Calligraphers begin (like me) in primarily scribing wedding invitations, placecards, and envelope addressing, while they hone their craft.

Step 2: Communication is Key

Once your project is defined, open a clear line of communication with a Calligrapher whose style you like. Instagram is a great place for searching for “Freelance Calligraphers” or “Calligrapher for hire”. Here are some of my favourites:

Klimlligraphy https://www.instagram.com/kimlligraphy/

Logos Calligraphy https://www.instagram.com/logos_calligraphy/

abhaycalligraphy https://www.instagram.com/abhaycalligraphy/

Me <3 https://www.instagram.com/lyndamargaretcalligraphy/

Once you have found someone you like, discuss style preferences, deadlines, and budget. This ensures expectations are aligned and avoids confusion. For clients, this is a chance to ask questions and feel confident in the process. I guide every project from idea to finished piece. My goal is to make commissioning calligraphy simple, collaborative, and enjoyable, so you can focus on your event or project while I take care of the lettering.

Step 3: Request a Quote

After discussing details, most calligraphers will provide you with “a quote”. I aim to make mine simple and transparent, showing clients exactly what to expect. A 50% deposit will secure the booking.

Step 4: Design and Proofing

During the design phase, many projects will include a sample. This is an opportunity to confirm style, layout, and details. Feedback is important—collaboration here ensures the final piece matches your vision.

Step 5: Payment and Delivery

The remaining 50% becomes payable upon completion (before return postage).

My Approach as a New Freelance Calligrapher

I plan to update this page as I refine my own process for clients. My goal is to make hiring a calligrapher easy, clear, and enjoyable, with open communication, thoughtful planning, and collaborative design.

Choosing a wedding calligrapher is about more than beautiful handwriting. It is about trust, reliability, and style alignment. Your stationery sets the tone for your entire celebration.

1. Look at Style First

Every calligrapher has a distinct style. Some specialise in modern, minimal scripts. Others work in traditional copperplate or romantic flourished lettering. Make sure their aesthetic matches your wedding theme. Even if a full portfolio is not available, ask to see samples or process work.

2. Check Experience with Weddings

Wedding calligraphy involves tight timelines and precise guest lists. An experienced calligrapher understands envelope etiquette, spacing, and common wording conventions. They will also know how to handle last-minute changes calmly and professionally.

3. Confirm Materials and Methods

Ask what ink, paper, and tools they use. Quality materials create cleaner lines and prevent smudging. If you are providing your own envelopes, confirm that they are suitable for calligraphy ink.

4. Discuss Turnaround Times

Brisbane weddings often cluster in peak seasons. Confirm availability early. Ask how long addressing, place cards, or signage will take. Clear timelines prevent stress close to your event date.

5. Understand Pricing Structure

Pricing may be per envelope, per name card, or per project. Ensure you understand what is included. Ask whether layout proofs or revisions are part of the service.

6. Look for Local Knowledge

A Brisbane-based calligrapher understands local venues, suppliers, and delivery times. This can make coordination smoother and more reliable.

7. Communication Matters

Choose someone who responds clearly and professionally. Wedding planning involves many moving parts. Good communication builds confidence.

The right calligrapher will feel aligned with your vision and organised in their process. When craft meets clarity, your wedding stationery becomes more than text — it becomes part of the memory.

nb. I live on the outskirts of Brisbane, in Moreton Bay.
