BEAUTY BUYS FOR JANUARY 2012

Always on the look out for inexpensive beauty buys---two of our fav brands out there (besides OLAY)---Physicians Formula and Garnier-have new products out on the market-aimed at evening up skin tones.

Both companies-widely available---on and offline---have anti-aging spot corrector/brightening products-
Physicians Formula Dark Spot Corrector & Skin Brightener serum ($21.95)

and Garnier Skin Renew Clinical Dark Spot Corrector moisturizer ($16.99)-that seem to have enough anti-oxidant ingredients so as to be helpful-with continued use-for the laser phobic. We haven't tried but have ten happy with past offerings from these companies...

Also-as mass merchandisers---these products are probably good for all skin tones too-something that lasers that even up skin pigments/get rid of the dark spots-including acne's telltale signs...are not. Still, want instant gratification????-read our thoughts on Cutera's Limelight™ IPL treatment.

Scent wise-winter seems to require heavier fragrances...but we think that can be overwhelming-especially if stuck in an elevator with said offender.

The Body Shop-a value driven destination for hair/skin/make-up products---has fragrance collections too---with authentic scented cleansing lather rich, soap free body wash gels, soothing moisturizers-body lotions, and easily portable eau de toilette and eau de parfum sprays.

New-the White Musk® Libertine group...which has a slight spicy floral aroma...that's subtle. Priced from $15-$24---with online specials seemingly continuous. An inexpensive way to smell great-with silky smooth skin too.

One of the most personable salon owners/entrepreneurs we know-with a razor sharp memory...Angelo David graciously hosted a gaggle of beauty editors last night---in his spacious 2nd floor salon...glaming up those of us who needed it (well, every attendee just about)....

AND

...introducing his latest hair product, the Premier Volume Spray-that volumes, strengthens and conditions hair.

What we liked about the light spray---actually, a lot--- really. Unlike most hair amplifiers---this pleasantly scented spray can be used on wet or dry hair-and makes hair manageable-with the ability to run one's fingers through it-not crunchy...or flammable.

Case in point-we arrived with our locks in a semi-dry state of affairs...and ---as Angelo David demo-ed on us...started spraying our hair at the roots-lifting from the crown-fairly generous amount of spray we thought...

BUT---because there's no such thing as overdosing with this spray (yes-idiot proof)...even amateurs will achieve the look they want.

David then sprayed the rest of our hair-lightly---to the ends...while able assistants worked their hair blower magic with large barrel brushes-a skill we totally lack-so of course, our hair looked great afterwards.

Priced at $18, the multi-tasking Premier Volume Spray is a one product addition that added smoothness and shine to our hair---as well as imparting a satisfying hold that seemed impervious to the humid weather conditions.

It's familiar-yet always -there is something astonishingly completely new-at the Frye showroom in midtown.

Amazing-how this label has soared upwards in terms of design of footwear and accessories ---and all that continues on ---as seen at the Spring 2012 media preview-that did not disappoint.

New Beauty Products 2012 from The Body Shop + Visine

From accessibly priced- The Body Shop---we've been trying a couple of their new beauty items ---a great way to usher in the New Year.

Our fav-and we are almost out of ALREADY---is the moisturizing RAINFOREST RADIANCE HAIR BUTTER $14.00.

Made with 100% natural, biodegradable and organic ingredients (so as to spare the water systems-wherever we are rinsing off--that stuff going down the drain goes somewhere)---

The thick creamy formula sinks right into frayed locks without weighing down hair with silicones that can end up looking greasy-ish-even on dry hair. We actually use a little bit on our air dry hair...taking about a quarter size-rubbed on our fingers-then run through our locks from roots to ends for great shine.

We also use on our wet hair that's been towel dry-more or less...and let the thin coat of Rainforest Radiance Hair Butter "sit" for a few minutes before rinsing off...for guaranteed tangle free drip dry hair that's is NOT a frizzy mess. Lightly scented--- the Hair Butter basically dries to an odor free finish-what we prefer.

Now that we have those mittens for texters...i.e. the top part folds over to free our fingers to swish away on our smartphone---we are even more obsessed with washing our hands as soon as we get home from strap hanging it on mass transit.

FINALLY-a hand cleanser that actually leaves our skin in decent, moist condition as well as germ free ready.

AND part of the new Hand Care Collection from the Body Shop ($8.00-$18.50) available in three terrific smelling groups-Wild Rose, Hemp and Almond (authentic scents too-not chemical brews). We have been using the Hemp Moisturizing Hand Wash ($10)---that cleans without drying out our paws...especially timely for winter months- as we are very aware of flu avoidance techniques and those hand sterilizing sanitizers are not great for our skin. Added Plus: The scent is exotic and we think -worthy of its own parfum-made with COMMUNITY FAIR TRADE SOURCED HEMP---we thought --- spicy/musky/light patchoulli oil-kind of= love it!

We also use the newish Almond Hand and Nails Cream ($18.50)-really for our hands, nails and elbows. The consistency is that of a thick lotion really-not a "cream"-and we felt a little goes a long way even though it gets absorbed right away. The sweet almond oil moisturizes and for nails, we assume-is the strengthening-panthenol. Scent wise-its' really light---which we prefer...and neutralized the chlorine odor our skin manages to emanate get an hour of laps in the swimming pool.

THE BODY SHOP

Smart brand extension-Visine®-that gets the red out - now has a VISINE® SOOTHING WIPES-basically oversized pads-saturated with just the right amount of proprietary kind of eye make-up remover--- that doubles as an overall face wipe too.

Non-irritating and a good choice for contact lens wearers---we found that even our waterproof mascara--- that usually requires a bit of rubbing to get off our lashes-came off straight away...with a slightly cooling feel too-that's refreshing.

SKIN TREATMENTS WITH RESULTS LIMELIGHT™ FACIAL/ULTHERAPY®

A new year, a new you...or just a refresher course...

After a lot of time in the sun...we were so not loving those 'freckles' -three on one hand-two on the other-that "magically" appeared on the back of our hands.

Even with being sunblock fanatics and wearing hats-our skin probably got more sun ray hits than ever before with all the triathlon training/golfing/hiking we ended packing into the warm weather months.

With little time for downtime-of course meaning no time---we opted for what is known as a Cutera Limelight Facial™ that's a "non-invasive" pulsed light treatment- 3 settings available-good for fair to medium skin tones... that fades the brown spots, nixes the telangiectasia (tiny veins) and overall facial redness-via, typically- 1-3 treatments.

Our go to gal-Clarissa is a highly skilled practitioner who works with Dr. Z. Paul Lorenc M.D., F.A.C.S. a few days a week. And we feel very strongly-very, very strongly in fact- THAT...even these so called non-invasive lasers require a trained individual to not only prevent any unwanted side effects-but is also knowledgeable enough to get real results...being able to 'read' a skin's reaction while undergoing treatment-and knowing when to repeat laser passes, move on etc---

We didn't do anything to "prep" our skin though there is a protocol to avoid retinoid/glycolic skin products about two weeks prior---and knowing that it kinda feels like rubber bands snapping on our skin-the pain factor was minor...so no Advil necessary for us.

We did wear goggles during the about half hour treatment we had-with cooling gel applied prior to being zapped by what is a laser device that looks like a high tech wand.

Although our face was a tad swollen afterwards-we immediately applied some make-up and resumed our regular day right away---though we can see how some might want to hang out a bit with an ice pack applied to treated areas- for about five-ten minutes.

Over the next 10 days-the dark spots on the back of our hands-scabbed (tiny ones) ---then fell off-no big
deal BA-BYE!!!

---What else we thought was pretty cool-little spots we never noticed-actually darkened- then completely faded away without scabs. YES!

What little redness we had in our face-completely faded-pretty much right away. We have a very fair skinned gal pal-typical Irish coloring who had a "mottled complexion" and a lot more redness---she had 3 treatments bout 3-4 weeks apart-and her skin now looks porcelain perfect.

Treatments are customizable-hence a skilled practitioner is really worth it...and might spare one having multiple treatments by getting "it" right the first time.

Awhile back-there was an article in the NY Times written by a gal who was not thrilled with what she saw as her sagging neckline.

Her choice Ultherapy---tightened up her skin where she wanted it --and so we learned from a "completely different energy" than other lasers like Thermage- that also aim to tighten the skin...according to Dr. Andrew Jacono M.D. FACS---a New York (City/Long Island) based plastic surgeon- we met with.

Like ultrasound -the energy is focused ---and targets the deeper layers of the dermis and muscle/SMAS layer--- to actually tighten the muscles underneath the skin-that droop-and stimulate new collagen growth. The skin SKIN itself-meaning the top layer we see/touch-isn't effected at all by the ultrasonic energy. Interesting.

"You can see it work right off the table," Jacono noted-in his experience with Ultherapy. The lifting effect can be immediate...and most patients should see increased tightening-meaning, definite improvement- over three months time as the tissue underneath the surface of the skin heals and generates more collagen. That's if the Ultherapy was done correctly.

We decided to try it ourselves...though without much jawline sagging at all (some would say none), we did not expect dramatic results in that area. FYI: Dr. Jacono -in his experience-sees about a "30% improvement" in patients with the right kind of skin (note ethnicity does not matter at all)- for the treatment. That group of potential patients doesn't include older, weathered skin with excessive sagging-where only plastic surgery will do. And smartly as he told us...30% on a youthful 40 year old who wants to shave off a few years, lookwise- is different than 30% improvement- for an 80 year old who might want to look like a vivacious 60 year old again.

Even with four Advils and half a Percocet---as pre-medication treatment-truth be told-our about 50 minute (about), Ultherapy treatment hurt---on a scale of five- up to ten on our thinner skin area-the brow right above the outside corner of our eye sockets. We read online that some patients get lidocaine shots in their faces- to block the pain-we get that completely. Though we thought about a stiff martini too-might help just as well.

Dr. Jacono performed our treatment himself...PLUS he has a great sense of humor which helps-as he kept telling us what to realistically expect-having undergone Ultherapy himself.

We would never even dream of going to any ole' spa for this. Dr. Jacono had his eyes on the Ulthera® System's control unit's imaging screen-"reading" how the energy waves hit our skin, knowing exactly how many passes to take in a certain area via a handpiece that transmitted the energy...when to repeat a section and how aggressively-a skill that needs to be learned thoroughly.

Considered to be noninvasive procedure targeting soft tissue with precision and consitency-we could still REALLY feel the heat, literally, seep into our skin's deeper layers. In fact, our friend with Radiesse filler in her nasial folds (those furrows from the end of her nose to the corner of her mouth) ---was counseled that Ultherapy might "dissolve" the Radiesse---another reason to talk to a skilled Doctor---who won't try to oversell one on this procedure-or any other.

Our face was swollen a bit afterwards---something that lasted under 24 hours-and we did nothing else special afterwards-and did not experience any burning or tightening feeling except in parts of our neck-and barely noticeable at that. Since the top skin isn't effected-makeup can be applied right off...and we actually went out afterwards, no problem.

Results wise---well, as stated prior-our neck didn't really sagged-but interesting-our eye area lifted-something we didn't even think we would see---and not weird wide eyed. Subtle. More like we cleverly tweezed our eyebrows-something we don't do.

OFF SEASON ENDURANCE SPORTS' TIPS

Off season, we and our teammates cut back on the competition focused workouts, and "crosstrain"---go hiking, play some golf if it's warm enough...and hangout with friends over leisurely evening meals.

It's never worth getting remotely out of shape though-since we're not wired that way- anyway-and it too hard getting into triathlon shape to begin with, so why lose it.

One thing that we've been told---however---is to work on perfecting swim strokes-and pick up strength training---weights, core exercises etc.

SO---an offer to try out LA import-a class at STRENGTH, LENGTHEN, TONE (SLT) in midtown-interested us-though truth be told, we never took a pilate/yoga class that didn't have us watching the clock after about 20 minutes-or had us wishing for engagement in some other workout, given our limited amount of workout time.

What it is-

---similar to those classes our nieces rave about in London where they live ---SLT uses a souped machine that resembles a Pilate's Reformer (Megaformers™)-to well strength, lengthen and tone targeted areas -in a fast pace, music blaring atmosphere-that does somewhat get the heart rate up.

In a super clean, sunny studio overlooking 57th Street-just off Fifth Ave.-SLT offers several instructor led classes throughout the day---we took a weekday/mid-day class with 5 other women of various ages-two from across the Pond---all SLT veterans. At most-there are classes of ten class attendees---a full class usually scheduled-we were told-right after work hours.

Our instructor accessed our fitness level before the class began (high) and gave us a fast tutorial on how the machine worked.

We are not good with gadgets, still it's pretty easy to follow along-and the instructor was hands on, showing us and correcting us- when we needed it. Without missing a beat-our instructor started with a core crunchy kind of move---and swiftly had attendees moving around the Megaformer™-targeting different areas-and we also figure, keeping us engaged with 'named' exercises -similar to the catchy Yoga positions like warrior/downward dog, etc.

The music helps---and yup, the work-out is efficiently real...muscles all get hit-in a isometric/stretchy kind of way-in a way-with pulleys-adjustable all for easier or tighter tensions---being pushed/pulled. Described as a combo of weight-training, Pilate's and cardio-we would say that's fairly accurate-though it wasn't like our cardio workouts for triathlons where we really push our heart rate up.

The gals in our class all took classes 2x a week---an amount we figure ideal. And yes there are men that take SLT-and no surprise to us-we were told they sweat buckets-as SLT is challenging-and especially for those guys who are used to muscling through a weight lifting session-using momentum.

Recently, we met up with a gal pal-who runs a wellness spa-that includes a retail component. Meaning, she can slather on any beauty products she wants-price no problem as her devoted clientele skews upscale...and of course, she demos i all.

What she gave the two thumbs up -as her fav- a skin treatment line from her past-the original skincare products developed by Beverly Hills Dermatologist Zein Obagi M.D.-specifically the original Obagi Nu-Derm® System...we were intrigued.

Well fast forward to the 21st century and now Dr. Obagi offers an at home, consumer friendly-ZO® SKIN HEALTH product collection-with the latest advanced ingredients and enhanced delivery systems- targeting the aging skin at all levels...

AND all available without a prescription or a visit to the doctor's office. .

The list of hard core products is extensive---but comprehensible via a questionnaire/test to figure out what one;s skin needs are.

We've been using the OLLUMINATE® INTENSE EYE REPAIR a no-nonsense, easily tolerated (btw) undereye cream with stabilized retinoid and peptides desined to strengthen the delicate skin under one's peepers and smooth away the fine lines.

Two years ago -we attended a trade show for make-up pros-whereby the organizer of the entire event-personally raved about the Greek skincare line KORRES®- and specifically the KORRES® FACE PRIMER-a silicone free item-and at that time, the first effective skin primer without silicone available at that packed show. Of course it sold out...so we couldn't get one for ourselves.

NOW---there are two amped up primers-smartly crafted for different skin types---which should do a lot to alleviate the primer phobic who just don't like the way a primer feels on their skin.

First for those with normal/oily skin that can skew red---there's KORRES® POMEGRANATE MATTIFYING PRIMER-a breathable, water based -no-color make-up base. We love this product-as our foundation went on perfectly over it-and lasted all day with no color changes...or need to powder up to rid our skin of shine. It really did minimize pores-when on. Nice.

On a recent week day, we took in two lifestyle collection that originate from abroad...one a smaller brand bustin' out...another a retail giant.

At a midtown space-we shared a cocktail with the super nice-immensely upbeat people employed by the Swedish lifestyle/casual wear brand db.

New to us-but in its second season in the States---we were impressed---in addition to a wide range of denim in different rinses ---with awesome fits---

...no tailoring necessary as the blends are a perfect mix -with excellent shape retention--- (though we think some of the back pocket logos need to be re-thought for the American markets)....

Our favs and soon to be big sellers- are these colorful khaki-cotton like pants for gals...we predict a major sell---they feel great, comfy and have a slim fit that's flattering.

And the jackets and tops for guys and gals are easy wear---and of nice-quality construction- with a bit of vintage flavor that we like...including this totally 70's leisure suit style hoody pictured below. FUN.
