I Vow Against VAW

I've recently been invited as one of the guest artist for I Vow Against VAW (Violence Against Women and Children), an event hosted by the Social Sciences Division and Humanities Division of the University of the Philippines-Cebu Campus, to commemorate the November 25 International Day Against Violence to Women and Children.

One of the highlights of the event is a mini-exhibit of artworks from local artists showing their stand against VAW. At 2 PM, we shall open the day's activities at the UP Main Conference Hall showcasing photography and artwork that will be put up on the walls of the Hall. Specific issues that were targeted for this year's event are: (1) domestic violence; (2) relationship-related/sexual violence including rape; (3) illegal trafficking of women OFW's resulting in prostitution and other forms of abuse; (4) sexual harassment in the workplace.

Since I'm lacking time to create a new painting, I've been reworking this one for the event. So far I'm pretty happy with what I was able to come up with. I'll have to quickly finish it this weekend in time for the event. But I didn't want to portray something graphic. Something subtle.

Violence against women is not always the obvious black eyes and bruises. The tactics used by abusers might be invisible to someone outside the family, they might seem trivial or random, but together the tactics have the effect of manipulating and controlling women and children, making them fearful.

I recently watched a documentary about a woman who was tricked into sexual slavery and prostitution. She was 19 yrs old and was promised that she would be enrolling in a university in the US. When she got to America she was told later on that she would be working a 12-hour shift at a strip bar. And even though she and the rest of the women stayed at a nice suburb they couldn't go anywhere. They couldn't talk to anyone. They were trapped like this for 7 or more months until they finally found a way to get out. Some women were less fortunate. What struck me most was the tactics the captors employed in order to control them. They stripped the women of their dignity and pride until the only thing that remained was fear and a feeling of hopelessness. That's what I want to convey...

Worldwide, more than a million women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Last year my aunt Gemma was diagnosed with breast cancer. But she noticed a hard lump on one of her breast the year before but didn't have it checked even though her sisters were diagnosed with the same disease years ago. And the wife of my uncle Harry was diagnosed with breast cancer last November. She had surgery, chemo and radiation. Unfortunately, last month they found out that it had spread to other organs. Last Wednesday, we were informed that the cancer had spread to her brain. My mom told me last night that she died. I'm on my way to attend the wake tonight.

My mom and I had a serious discussion about it last night and I was forced to think of what would I do if I were in the same situation... would i be as strong as the women who've fought and won or would i succumb to the disease? I jokingly said; "I have a back up plan... I'll kill myself before it gets worst." My mom dismissed it as a joke. But then again isn't there some saying that jokes like that are half true?

I regularly do self breast examinations every month so I can notice changes in my breast. The truth is most lumps are spotted by self breast exams. Although I'm scared when I do it every time... i still do it because the earlier you find it the better your chances.
