It’s easy to take potshots at actors turned musicians, since it often seems like the actors are taking advantage of their celebrity by turning into recording stars. This ignores two facts: first, often these actors have been playing music for as long as they’ve been acting; and second, who’s to say that these critics, if put in the same position, wouldn’t take advantage of their celebrity to pursue their dream projects? 50 Cent, Yayo Named in ‘Gangsta’ Lawsuit

A New York City mother and her 14-year-old son filed a civil lawsuit against 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, Violator Management and the Universal Music Group labels Interscope, G-Unit and Shady Records on Wednesday. The teen is the son of the Game’s manager, Jimmy “Henchman” Rosemond, and he claims Yayo and three other men jumped him on a Manhattan sidewalk in March of 2007 when they saw him wearing a Czar Entertainment shirt. (Czar is the Game’s management company, and the Game hasn’t been on good terms with G-Unit since a feud in 2005.)

While Fiddy wasn’t at the alleged crime scene, Rosemond and the boy’s mother, Cynthia Reed, claim that Yayo’s attack was meant to “promote and maintain Yayo and 50 Cent’s ‘gangsta’ image,” an image that’s “promoted, marketed and advertised” by the pair’s record labels. As the lawsuit explains it, “The members of G-Unit, including defendants Yayo and 50 Cent, encouraged, sanctioned, approved and condoned its members threatening violence, and or engaging in violent acts in furtherance of its business.”

Yayo pleaded guilty to harrassment in February and was sentenced to 10 days of community service. One of his associates, Lowell Fletcher, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to nine months in jail. All of the defendants in the civil case have delined to comment on the matter.

Jermaine Dupri Launches TAG-Backed Label

In one of the strangest record label partnerships of the past few years, Island Def Jam Music Group and TAG body spray have announced a joint hip-hop venture headed up by Jermaine Dupri.

“My goal is to find artists that have longevity written all over their face,” Dupri told Billboard.com, adding that TAG will launch two artists per year during the course of the three-year deal.

According to Dupri, TAG’s parent company, Proctor & Gamble, pitched the idea to Def Jam as a way to reach its teen demographic more effectively, as well as emphasize the urban programs TAG will soon introduce to aspiring MCs. On the music side, TAG will provide its artists with a hefty marketing budget.

“Most artists get probably $1 million for a marketing budget,” Dupri explained. “The TAG artists will receive 10 times the typical marketing support. It will give these artists a chance to be and feel just as big as a Kanye West because the marketing budget is 10 to 20 times as much as the average. While it’s not actually $10-20 million, the numbers are up in that area and further north.”

Dupri plans on announcing the first TAG artist in May to coincide with TAG Body Spray’s relaunch this summer.

“I like it because we can’t stop the artist process because of the record business’ [red tape],” he said. “We’re all going to see what happens. Live Nation might offer a lot of money but they don’t offer what TAG does because they don’t set a platform.”

Blondie Celebrates ‘Parallel Lines’ Anniversary

Blondie has announced a series of shows in support of Parallel Lines’ 30th anniversary. The tour starts on June 5 in Baltimore and winds down at Milwaukee’s Summerfest on June 28. More dates are also expected soon.

Parallel Lines launched such hit singles as “Hanging On the Telephone,” “One Way or Another” and “Heart of Glass.” It also hit No. 1 on the UK charts and No. 6 in the states. Blondie live:

Bacardi, Groove Armada Sign 360-Degree Deal

Bacardi and Groove Armada have signed a one-year partnership that covers recordings, touring, and audiovisual content. As the liquor company’s global experiential manager, Sarah Tinsley, explained it to Billboard.com, “Essentially we are taking over the role of a record label—producing the music, promoting new music, and the artist is playing at our events.”

One specific portion of the deal is a Groove Armada EP Bacardi plans on underwriting and releasing in physical and digital formats sometime in the third quarter of 2008. They will then have the option of licensing any tracks for global ad campaigns.

“We see this deal as giving us an increased opportunity to take our recorded and live music to new parts of the globe and to new potential markets,” Groove Armada manager Dan O’Neil said to Billboard. “Frankly, we haven’t found that [to be] easy with a major label.”

Groove Armada left their five-year deal with Jive Records at the tail end of 2007. Now that they’ve linked up with Bacardi, the duo will perform at 25 “B-Live” events beginning April 19 at Miami’s Bayfront Park Amphitheater. One key detail in the deal: Groove Armada retains the masters and the copyrights of any music created through the Bacardi partnership.

“Bacardi doesn’t see this as something that they want to earn money from, which is, quite rightly, something a label has to do,” O’Neil explained. “They are looking at it from a point of view of association, and they’re getting access to a license to use the music to implement their strategy worldwide.”
