Always paste without formatting or with destination style or formatting while copy and pasting in Word 2007 and 2010. Use destination formatting or paste text only when pasting within the same document, between different document, or from other programs.

Its a more common fact that we always use Copy and Paste at least some of the information while writing any document in Office Word. The default setting is that the contents are pasted with source formatting but most likely you always change it to the current formatting. You can change the setting in Word 2007 so that you can always paste without formatting so that it follows the current formatting or with destination formatting.

So how to always paste without formatting or with destination formatting in Word 2007?

Click the Office Button on the top left corner and click on the Word Options at the bottom (You will see this next to Exit Word)

In Word Options pop-up, click Advanced on the left sidebar. Scroll down to Cut, Copy and Paste section.

Here you will see different options for Pasting within the same document, Pasting between documents, Pasting between documents when style definitions conflict and Pasting from other programs. Keep source formatting is chosen by default and you can change it to Match Destination formatting or Keep Text Only for to Paste without formatting.

This tip always comes in handy and doesn’t get on you when you have to always use the auto correct feature to change the formatting and I wish this feature would also be available in Excel 2007 but as of I know they are not available.

Use Computer as Alarm clock without additional third pary software for free. Learn how to start Windows media player automatically at certain time to play music as an alarm clock. Schedule to play music from a playlist or CD or DVD at a given time using Media player

Did you always get bugged by the alarm that goes off near your bed or from your mobile phone? And you always just keep snoozing it for almost an hour before you get up? How about setting Windows Media Player to start playing some nice warm music in the morning to wake you up? I always prefer to play some music when I get up but now its better as its already playing when I get up!!!

Now you can use your computer as an alarm clock without any third party software!

So how to set WMP to start playing music automatically at certain time?

Recently I have been playing with scheduled tasks in Windows 7 and this is an achievement through that feature. (This tutorial is written from Windows 7 but its the same in Windows Vista.)

Click Start and search for Task Scheduler. Click Task Scheduler under Program.

Now click on Create Basic Task on the right sidebar from the Task Scheduler Library.

Give a name and a description as per your own liking. I gave the name as Morning Music. Click Next.

Choose Daily and click Next.

Set the time.

Under Action, choose Start a program and click Next.

Now here are few things you might need to know to help you customize better.

Play only one song - Just browse the song and leave the rest blank.

Play a playlist – Browse wmplayer.exe, usually it resides in ‘C:program FilesWindows Media Playerwmplayer.exe’. Under arguments type ‘/Playlist playlistname’ (playlistname should be the actual name of the playlist that you want to play.

Play from DVD – Program is same as above. under arguments type ‘/device:DVD’

Play from Audio CD – Program is same as above. Under arguments type ‘/device:audio CD’

Make sure you check Open the Properties dialog for this task when I click Finish as we need to change some properties. Click Finish.

Now you will get the properties. Here you can view and change any of the settings.

Go to the Conditions tab and change the settings in the Power section like you prefer. You can set it to run only if the computer in on AC power. But make sure you check Wake the computer to run this task as probably you will computer will go to sleep mode when you go to sleep!

Now the Windows Media Player will start at the specified time every day and play the songs from the playlist.

Note: The computer will not start the Windows Media Player if the computer is not switched on and it needs to be logged in.

Hide and unhide formulas in Excel 2007, 2010 and other earlier versions like 2003. Easy way to protect the formulas in the excel sheet by hiding them with a password.

Formulas help to calculate many things and also to predict the sales or cost or other aspects in any business. Many times these formulas are not to be revealed to clients or others when these projected data are published. So its a wise option to hide these formulas just before sending out to others.

So today let’s see how to hide and unhide formulas in Excel?

Recently we looked on how to protect Excel sheets with password and also selectively protecting certain cells, columns or rows in Excel. Hiding and unhiding formulas is also a similar feature.

You can selectively hide only certain formulas or you can hide all the formulas in the sheet. To selectively hide it, right click on the cell and choose Format Cells or to hide all the formulas in the sheet, you can just use Ctrl + A as Keyboard shortcut to select all and choose Format cells.

Go to the Protection tab and choose Hidden. [For locked see the other post, How to Protect Excel Sheets with Password?]

Click Ok.

Now go to Review tab, Click Protect sheet and hide the sheets using a password.

This would hide all the formulas. To be able to view the formulas again or to unhide it, go the review tab and click Unprotect sheet. Enter the password again to unhide it.

Here you can see the difference before hiding the formulas,

and after hiding it.

Create a custom keyboard shortcut to open a website from favorites in Internet Explorer (IE8. IE7). For example, use keyboard shortcut to open Yahoo, Gmail, CNN, Hulu, Netflix, Youtube and other site in Internet Explorer

Well, you may have thousands of links in the favorites in Internet Explorer but among them you might open a few every day. Like for example, Yahoo, Gmail or News sites like CNN or Some video sites like Youtube, Hulu or Netflix. Have you ever wondered to open these sites in another tab without going through the links by just using a Keyboard Shortcut? Here is a solution!

So, how to create a custom keyboard shortcut to open a favorite website link in IE?

Expand the favorites in the side to view the links. Right click on the link that you want to create Keyboard Shortcut for and click Properties.

Click on the Shortcut Key box and click Ctrl + Alt + Key of your choice.

I have used this to create keyboard shortcuts for webpages like,

Hulu – Ctrl + Alt + H

Netflix – Ctrl + Alt + N

Gmail – Ctrl + Alt + G

Yahoo – Ctrl + Alt + Y

CNN – Ctrl + Alt + C

You can try this in all IE versions. This is done in IE8.

open task manager in Windows Vista and Windows 7 with one keyboard shortcut key. Use Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager

Did you always open Windows Task Manager in Windows XP using Alt + Ctrl + Del ? and Even after moving to Windows Vista and Windows 7 you are still using that command but it takes you to a screen where you have options like Lock this computer, Switch User, Log Off, Change Password, and Start Task Manager?

Instead of going through this double step process, here is a quick tip on how you can open Task manager in Windows using a single keyboard shortcut.

Just use Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly!

Here is quick tip on how to access the clipboard in Word and Excel. Its out there in the main page of Word but sometimes we miss the obvious for long to see it has been there all day long. This is one such case,

So how to access Clipboard in Word and Excel 2007?

Protect only certain cells in excel, also applicable for protecting certain columns or rows in Excel 2007, Excel 2003.

In the last post we saw how to Protect and Unprotect Excel sheets with password in general and in this post for advanced users who want just to protect only certain cells, columns, rows in an Excel sheet. This makes only certain sensitive cells as read-only while allowing the user to edit other cells or information.

So how to protect only certain cells in Excel 2007?

This tip is written for Excel 2007 but the idea maybe applied to earlier version like Excel 2003.

When you protect a sheet all the contents are protected because by default all the cells are set to be locked.

So Press the Keyboard Shortcut Ctrl + A to select all the cells of the sheet. Right click and choose Format cells. Go to the Protection tab and uncheck Locked option and click Ok.

Now select only the cells or columns, rows that you want to protect. Right click and choose Format cells again. Go to the protection tab and check Locked option and click Ok.

Go to Review tab, click Protect Sheet and protect the sheet using a password. See the previous post (How to Protect and Unprotect Excel Sheets) for more details.

Now only certain cells of the sheet will be protected.

To unprotect, just go to the review tab, and click Unprotect sheet and enter the password.

Additional Tips: If you want users to be able to change the colors or fonts, choose format cells, columns and rows option while you protect the sheet.

Protect sheets, cells, columns, or rows in excel with a password and unprotect sheets. Make the contents of sheets in Excel read-only with password.

Sometimes it may be needed to protect the Excel sheets to prevent any further editing or accidental changes before giving it to clients or others who may want to just want to have access to view the contents and not edit it. This also helps to set a password to protect and allow certain users to edit and update the sheet.

So how to protect sheets and unprotect in Excel 2007 with password?

Go to the Review tab in Excel and Click Protect Sheet.

You will get a pop-up Protect Sheets. Check Protect Worksheet and contents of locked cells.

Set the password to unprotect sheet and check other options like select locked cells, select unlocked cells, format cells columns or rows, insert or delete rows, columns and others as desired.

Click ok. Now this sheet is protected.

To unprotect any protected sheets in Excel, go to Review tab and click Unprotect Sheet. Enter the password in the pop-up and now the sheet will be editable and unprotected.
