What’s the most expensive two-year MBA program you can take? You might be surprised to learn it isn’t Harvard or Stanford, or Wharton or Chicago, or Dartmouth or Yale. Instead, priciest MBA is being sold by Columbia Business School. Columbia estimates that the cost of its two-year, full-time MBA program in New York is a whopping $168,307.Harvard Business School Dean Nitin Nohria said earlier this week that the cost of a Harvard MBA is less than several other top rivals. “We are at the middle of the pack when it comes to the top ten schools,” he said in a wide-ranging interview with The Financial Times. By the estimates of the total cost of the degree posted on business school websites, he’s actually being somewhat conservative. Harvard comes in as the seventh most expensive MBA program among the top 20 U.S. business schools.Not only is Columbia number one, but the school Columbia also ends up on another extreme end of this list of premium-priced degrees. Columbia reports the lowest percentage of MBA students who are receiving financial aid from the school–just 55%, well below the 81% at Duke, the 80% at Dartmouth, or the 75% at Stanford.The total cost of the Columbia program includes two years worth of tuition, fees, books, and the estimated costs to live in New York City. But as often is the case, these numbers are often conservative. Yale’s School of Managment makes clear that its esimates assume a “modest lifestyle.” Cornell informs applicants on its website that its estimate of $11,250 a year for living expenses is “based on the cost of sharing a moderately priced apartment” at a cost of $700 a month rent and putting aside $425 a month for food.Most MBAs at elite schools will find it hard to live on that budget, especially in New York, Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco. Indeed, perhaps to make these estimates more believable to applicants, Cornell goes out of its way to note, “It is much easier to live like a student when you are a student than to live like a student when you are earning $90,000 annually. If you were to reduce your student loans from $50,000 to $40,000 you would save approximately $121 per month in student loan payments.”TOTAL COST ESTIMATES ARE VERY CONSERVATIVE.In almost all cases, these “total cost” numbers–taken from the school’s websites–are very conservative estimates. Wharton’s $168,000 pricetag, for example, fails to include the cost of its Global Immersion Program, which ranges from $5,800 to $7,800, or the inevitable cost to join clubs, attend conferences and “parties,” which Wharton estimates at $860 a year. Those two omissions alone add 6% to the total cost estimate of an MBA degree. Stanford’s estimate of the total cost of its MBA degree doesn’t include a required “global study tour” which costs about $4,000. In most cases, you can expect the “total cost estimate” to be 10% to 20% higher, given your lifestyle preferences and desire to take full advantage of the MBA experience.The costs of non-U.S. MBA programs can vary widely, especially because in Europe one-year programs are especially popular. London Business School’s 21-month MBA program looks like a bargain if you believe the estimate: $134,152, with $77,854 of that going to pay tuition. The accelerated 10-month MBA program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, costs just $102,714 (with about $73,000 of that for tuition). Of course, that’s the estimate from INSEAD for living expenses, food, and travel. Could you live in France on $30,000 over those ten months? Perhaps if you lived in a trailer or a tent. What can you deduce from the costs of these top MBA programs and the amount of financial aid for students arranged by their schools? The least expensive program is at the University of Texas at Austin. At a total cost of $127,144–more than $40,000 less than a Columbia MBA–it looks like a true bargain for a top degree. Then, add in the fact that the school is helping 75% of its MBAs with financial aid–versus Columbia’s 55%–and it seems as if it is a very smart investment, indeed.The most expensive public university in the MBA game is surprisingly UCLA. Higher ranked B-schools at Berkeley, Michigan and Virginia are less expensive in total costs than the Anderson school in Los Angeles–largely because of the highest cost of living in L.A. than Berkeley, Ann Arbor, or Charlottesville.The most generous school in terms of financial aid? MIT Sloan. The school puts together the largest average financial aid packages of the top schools: $130,418. That’s more than $15,000 more than Columbia and more than twice the size of Berkeley’s $67,052 (the lowest amount reported by any of our top 20 schools). Be aware, however, that financial aid is a rather vague phrase to describe a package of financial help. You don’t know how much of this money is merely a loan or a scholarship or fellowship.HARVARD GIVING STUDENTS MORE THAN $20 MILLION A YEAR IN FELLOWSHIPS.Such fellowships–typically used to lure exceptional students or to help students on the basis of financial need–can significantly lower the price tag of an MBA. HBS says that nearly half of every MBA class receives an average of some $25,000 per year in “need-based” HBS Fellowships that are granted only on the basis of financial need and not academic merit. The school makes these awards based on an analysis of an applicant’s income for the prior three years as well as the applicant’s assets.

An online MBA degree can help you get a better job, a higher position, and a pay raise. However, a simple mistake such as choosing the wrong school or failing to network with your peers could harm your chances of finding success.

If you want to do well in your online MBA program, avoid these common mistakes:

Mistake #1: Enrolling in a non-accredited online MBA program.

Avoid it: A degree from an unaccredited school may not be accepted by other universities and future employers. Before enrolling in any online MBA program, check to see if the school is accredited by the proper regional association.

Fix it: If you're already attending a school that isn't properly accredited, try to transfer to a school that is. Before applying to a new school, ask them to explain their transfer policy. With any luck, you may still be able to salvage some of your work.

Mistake #2: Not taking online MBA work seriously.

Avoid it: It's easy to do less than your best when an instructor isn't standing over your shoulder. But, don't dig yourself into a hole by neglecting your assignments. York launches degree verification website

York University has launched “YU Verify,” an online service that will verify whether a person received a degree from York. To use the site, employers, immigration officials, and others need either a student number or basic information, such as a first and last name.

Results are instantaneous. A test run using actress Rachel McAdams’ name confirmed that she did, in fact, receive a BFA in 2001. Email inquiries can be made if the graduate has a common name and the searcher can’t provide more details.

“We’ve taken appropriate steps to detect bogus transcripts and any person caught will be prevented from continuing with the application,” said Alex Bilyk, spokesman for the university.

The website’s launch follows a Toronto Star investigation last December, which uncovered a former York student’s fraudulent degree service.

Peng Sun was creating near-perfect copies of York degrees for $3,000. He also sold copies of transcripts that were indistinguishable from the real thing, on watermarked paper and with the university’s logo.

Sun boasted to the undercover reporter that he had made hundreds of fake degrees for York and U of T in the four years he had been operating.

Sun claimed his clients were mostly students studying on a visa, who had skipped or failed school. They wanted to return home with a degree that could get them good jobs, he said.

“I have friends in China who spent three years here, didn’t want to go to school but got York and U of T degrees (from me), then got a job,” Sun said.

Prices for a BA, MBA, and PhD were all the same because, to Sun, it was all “paper and ink.”

Sun, whose own degree from York is real, was never charged for a crime. He refunded the undercover reporter’s money and has since not been bothered by York or the police.

The investigation also revealed how Quami Frederick, a 28-year-old from Grenada, got into Osgoode Hall Law School with a degree she had purchased from a diploma mill on the Internet. Frederick was in her third year at Osgoode when the investigation revealed that her degree in business from St. George’s University in Grenada was a fake.

Not only did Frederick use the fake degree to get into Osgoode, but she then forged her transcripts for the three years she was at school. Osgoode Hall has since toughened its admission procedures.

The then-dean at Osgoode, Patrick Monahan, said the integrity of the admissions process was of paramount importance at a law school.

Global MBA luncheon promotes unique Webster degree option

Photos of happy-go-lucky world travelers splashed across the big screen at the Global MBA information session in the University Center Sunnen Lounge on Nov. 16. Sponsored by the School of Business and Technology, the session provided prospective graduate students with a more in-depth look at the program.

Benjamin Akande, dean of the School of Business and Technology, spent time giving an overall introduction to the program and to the ways students could benefit from the degree.

"When you think about the current economic conditions, you need to be competitive when you enter the workforce," Akande said. "Our focus is that this program sets you apart. It is an immersion in global competency."

Students in the program attend classes in five different countries over the course of 11 months.

Anne Browning, director of WU's Global MBA Program, said students get a rare look at the inner workings of international corporations and are afforded many opportunities to build connections with executives.

"We work hard to get you that corporate exposure," Browning said.

That's a big draw for students like Monica Fugel, a graduate from the University of Missouri-St. Louis who attended the session to learn more about the degree.

"Over there, not only do you get to learn from different companies but also from their experiences," Fugel said.

So far, the Global MBA Program has been a success in terms of job placement. All but one of the graduates in the inaugural class have found employment.

"We're working with him to find the place where he wants to be," Akande said.

Though the program is designed to provide students with a competitive edge in the job market, the price tag could prove hefty for some.

According to the Global MBA Web site, the fee for the 2009-2010 program was $48,000.

Jake Alonzo, a junior management major, said he is unsure whether he would be able to afford the program.

Browning said that students who apply by Dec. 1, will receive last year's tuition rate. She also reminded students that scholarships and other forms of financial aid are available to help offset the cost of the program.

Still, having the ability to finance the Global MBA degree does not guarantee admission.

Akande said that close to 60 students applied for the 2009-2010 program and only 15 were selected. He anticipated that the number of admissions for the 2010-2011 program would be similar.

Undeterred by the idea of tough competition, students like Alonzo still plan to apply.

"I want to set myself apart from other applicants to give myself that advantage," Alonzo said.

Todd Stadnik, a junior finance major, said he appreciates that the degree offers a big picture view of international business.

"I think it's a good program because you get to go to five countries and get different perspectives," Stadnik said.

For Mike Budenholzer, a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, the idea of getting an education while traveling holds the greatest appeal.

"I love traveling and being abroad," Budenholzer said. "So, that sounds like a win-win to me."

CSU Monterey Bay students can earn MBA's online

When Tami Corum leaves work as a chief financial officer, she goes home to her spouse and a 6-year-old son, and studies for her master's in business administration degree online.

"Some days I feel like my brain is full," said Corum, part of the first group in CSU Monterey Bay's online executive MBA program, which began in 2007.

Corum, who grew up in Boulder Creek and lives in Aptos, has been chief financial officer at several small companies and is now at Elyxir Distributing in Watsonville.

Corum said she could have gone to an MBA program in a traditional setting, "but it would damn near kill me."

She considered a program that would have meant some weekends in San Francisco, but settled on CSUMB, a place she had visited once.

"The flexibility is a big asset," said Corum, who averages about two hours a day on her MBA studies.

Corum said she was about to turn 40 when she decided to seek an MBA.

"With me, there's a love of education," said Corum.

She'd also like to teach at some point.

"It's been a long-standing goal of mine to teach at the university level," Corum said, where an MBA is usually required. She said it's something she could do part-time in addition to her regular job.

Scandals in the accounting industry in the last few years have been "heartbreaking," Corum said.

"I hope I can bring back some credibility to the profession. Accountants are not just bean counters. We're leaders."

It's called an executive MBA program because the program is for people with job experience.

"We're looking for individuals with at least seven years of work experience," said Murray Millson, the business faculty member who heads the program. Students entering the program should have at least three years in a leadership position.

The students "are usually 30-plus, up into their 50s," said Millson. Enrollment is about 40 now, and is expected to grow. There are four times a year that students can enroll.

As they enter the program, students become part of a "cohort," sort of electronic classmates, and have online discussions about what they've learned. The cohorts range from five to 13 now, but will get bigger.

The curriculum includes organization and leadership, accounting and finance, micro-macro economics, innovation and technology management, marketing and entrepreneurship, global business and business strategy.

The 24-month program costs $38,800, which Millson said is a lot less than some other programs. MBA students often get money from their employers to defray costs, Millson said. He doesn't know how many online MBA programs are in the country, but said the number is growing.

Bill Ballas, 54, director of communications for Tri-City Health Center in Fremont, joined the CSUMB program in April. He's had a long career in health care, usually in larger companies with a narrower job focus.

What he has gleaned from his studies "have already meant a lot to my job performance," said Ballas.

He said Marylou Shockley, head of CSUMB's business department, emphasizes "think and link" for students to apply what they've learned to their jobs. He spends about 15 hours a week on his studies.

Ballas said he gets "a real nugget" of information about every other week. He enjoys communicating online with the others in his cohort, although he's never met them in person.

"There's a lot of very intelligent people" enrolled, he said.

The EMBA students aren't necessarily looking for another job, but want to increase their skills or move up in the company, Millson said. Ballas and Corum said they're happy where they are.

Ballas, who has taken online classes before, likes the convenience. "You can just cut to the chase when it's online."

Dog Gets Online MBA For "Life and Career Experience" -- Highlighting Growing Problem of Online College Diploma Mill Fraud

Chester Ludlow, a pug dog from Vermont, has been awarded an online MBA (Masters in Business Administration) by Rochville University--an online college that offers distance learning degrees based on life and career experience.

Chester is believed to be the first dog to be awarded a college degree based on life experience. But did he earn it--or did he buy it?

"The difference between earning a college degree online or buying one is key," says Vicky Phillips, founder of GetEducated.com, a consumer group that reviews and rates online colleges and works to protect consumers from diploma mill fraud.

In May, Chester submitted his resume--along with $499--to Rochville University online. A week later, on June 5, 2009, an express packet arrived from a post office box in Dubai. It contained Chester's MBA diploma, two sets of college transcripts, a certificate of distinction in finance, and a certificate of membership in the student council.

The paperwork says the pug "earned" a GPA of 3.19 (for an additional $100, he could have graduated with honors).

All documents were issued in the dog's AKC pedigree name: Chester Ludlow. Chester also received a Rochville University window decal for his car (though reportedly the canine does not drive).

Rochville University is one of scores of online universities operating from foreign post office boxes that advertise college diplomas fast for a flat fee. The university claims accreditation by the "Board of Online Universities Accreditation" and the "Universal Council for Online Education Accreditation."

The catch? Neither of these agencies is recognized as a college accreditor by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation.

"It matters which agency accredits your online college," explains Phillips. "Want to ensure your fellow alumni aren't real dogs? Make sure your online college is accredited by a recognized agency."

To help combat credential fraud, GetEducated.com operates a free service, The Diploma Mill Police. This service allows consumers to verify the accreditation status of any online college. It also helps employers screen resumes for fraudulent college credentials.

"Degree mills represent a billion dollar industry worldwide," warns Phillips. "If you define a degree mill as any agency willing to award educational credentials without concern as to whether or not learning actually occurred, then it appears Chester the pug has been the victim of a degree mill."

Why more women don't get MBAs

t's a bit puzzling: Over the past 20 years, as women have made tremendous gains in the business world, the percentage of B-school students who are female has remained at about 30%, or roughly the same now as in the late '80s. (By contrast, female enrollment in law and medical schools has risen over the same time period to about 50%.)

The Forté Foundation started in 2001 with a mission: to encourage more women to consider getting an MBA, and to provide them with information about how to do it.

Sponsored by 21 companies, among them IBM (IBM, Fortune 500), Goldman Sachs (GS, Fortune 500), Ernst & Young, American Express (AXP, Fortune 500), and Avon (AVP,Fortune 500), and 37 B-schools -- including Harvard, Chicago, Wharton, MIT, and Columbia -- Forté is holding a series of conferences called "The MBA Value Proposition" in five cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Boston) between now and October 1.

I recently spoke with Elissa Ellis Sangster, Forté's executive director, about their work. Some excerpts from our conversation:

Let me play devil's advocate here for a minute and ask, why do women need to go to B-school? Or I'll put it this way: Does anyone really need to get an MBA in order to get ahead in businesses other than investment banking or consulting?

Well, plenty of people are successful without an MBA. But the degree does give you the ability to take your career to a higher level.

For one thing, it gives you a great network of people who are in a position to support your career in the future, and it teaches you analytical and decision-making skills that are useful in any industry, so that you have the flexibility and the nimbleness to move easily from one role to another or one industry to another.

That's an important asset, especially in this economy. An MBA is really an investment for life.

Beyond that, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has done studies showing that the more education you have, the more you earn over the course of your lifetime, and the less likely you are to be unemployed.

Right now, the overall unemployment rate is almost 10%, but for people with a master's degree, it's 2.4%. That's pretty striking.

Why are there still relatively few women MBAs?

Well, the thing that launched Forté eight years ago was a huge study of this question, by researchers at the University of Michigan and Catalyst that revealed four main reasons.

First, women were concerned about balancing work, school, and home-life responsibilities if they went back to school.

Second, they didn't see many role models -- female MBAs who were managing to juggle everything.

Third, they expressed doubts as to whether they had the quantitative background and the advanced math skills to handle MBA courses.

And fourth, they weren't getting much, if any, encouragement from their employers to get an advanced degree.

To a large extent those concerns have not gone away. So we address those issues in our forums and through our online network of about 40,000 businesswomen. We're also reaching out to undergraduate students in fields like liberal arts and engineering, holding on-campus events called "Career Labs" that encourage them to consider business careers.

How do you view women's role in the business world today in general? Is the glass half empty or half full?

It's certainly half full in the sense that, as Fortune's list of the most powerful women shows, more women are advancing in companies.

But it's half empty at the very top. There are still only 13 female CEOs of major companies, up from four a few years ago. I did the math, and at that rate of advancement, it will take women until 2096 to reach parity with men.

Also, Catalyst did a study showing that, at the senior management level -- one or two rungs below CEO -- 19% of women lost their jobs in this recession, versus 6% of men. I don't know why. It's probably due to a combination of things, including the fact that women often don't have the kinds of strong professional networks their male counterparts have. An MBA could help with that!

Is a postgraduate degree more valuable than work experience?

Education maketh a man as the old adage goes. Our world has evolved so much from centuries gone by. If it can be said that we each have access to a melting pot of opportunities, it is also true that we are all athletes in the race for success. Suddenly, characteristic traits which were all important once upon a time, have taken a backseat.

Today it is a different kind of parameter that wins you respect and in most cases even a job. The abbreviations after your name have a big hand in determining your career.

So why is getting a post graduate degree attracting so much of mileage of late? Well, for starters, it is believed that a person who is studying for such a degree has a genuine passion and love for his subject.

Secondly, with the spurge in the number of universities and institutions offering post graduate degrees, a student who gets his degree from a renowned place is thought to be made of better stuff than his peers. The general perception is that if he has managed to secure a seat amidst stiff competition, then he is a declared winner for life.

Thirdly, a post graduate degree is often spoken of as being a necessity to secure a job, as well as to help one get ahead faster, in one’s career. Not surprising then, that hundreds of students globally, fill out application forms by the dozen, attend tutoring classes, and spend sleepless nights till they get a letter confirming their selection for the post graduate degree.

While this has been a force in encouraging people to study further, it has also lead to a decline in the value of a post graduate degree. Everybody has one, so how does that make you any different? This is especially true of an MBA degree.

So how did our parents and grandparents write their success stories then? Well, those times were different. In those days, getting a job meant that a person worked his way up from the very bottom.

Managers were made usually by the age of 50, as compared to today’s managers who are as young as 25. Job loyalty used to be at an all time peak as well. It was not uncommon for people to work all their lives with one firm, putting in extra hours with utmost devotion and without complaint.

Today any extra work is accounted for in a salary slip. The subtle evolution at the workplace too has not gone unnoticed. Along side middle aged employees, features a new breed of young, broad minded, eager eyed managers making presentations in well cut suits and leather briefcases.

This also leads to an increase in complexes among middle aged employees who may not have the same degree. After all, it is difficult to report to somebody who is much younger than you and still green around the ears. So who actually gets the promotion faster- an employee with only work experience to fall back on or an employee with a postgraduate degree?

There are two schools of thought on this. One believes that nothing can be a better teacher than work experience and no post graduate degree can ever substitute that. The other school of thought believes that having a post graduate degree helps you think differently, learn faster, communicate better as well as hone group handling skills.

Truth is that employers themselves prefer to hire people who are a mix of both. While having a post graduate degree signifies that your understanding of the subject is higher, work experience gives you a dose of reality. Hiring such people makes it easier for a work team to gel together as well.

It relatively cuts down ego clashes and complexes that arise because employees can relate better to each other. The important point to note is that since getting a post graduate degree is fast losing its exclusivity, it is vital that post graduates keep updating themselves by attending courses in the area of their choice, seminars, workshops and the like.

If attaining a managerial position is important to you, it is also important to possess the knowledge, acumen and skills that come along with the job. After all, it is never too late for anybody to become a student again, and job related skill development might just tip the scales in your favour. So say yes to doing an odd job or so, or even attending a seminar that is being held in your city.

Every bit of extra effort and knowledge that you gather, eventually adds up to your personality and confidence. Life itself is a school, peppered with lessons, crash courses and surprise exams. So, let every minute be your teacher.
