Fast forward to the MarketingSherpa 2012 report and the numbers actually declined in SEO marketing maturity among organizations surveyed.

21 percent of companies had no formal SEO process.
48 percent had an informal process; sporadically checked.
Respondents with a formal process, with guidelines and routine initiatives declined 5 percent (from 34 percent to 29 percent)

After reviewing marketer insights with respect to each SEO maturity phase, I would argue a significant percentage of the “informal process” respondents were much closer to the “no process” side of the scale as well.
The Benefits of a Formal B2B SEO Process

MarketingSherpa's survey results support what experienced SEO professionals have known for quite some time. Organizations with a mature SEO marketing plan experienced better results with common SEO tactics and higher quality leads from their SEO initiatives.

marketing-sherpa-seo-benefits-2011
What is a Formal B2B SEO Process?

If your organization is struggling with the development of a formal SEO program, this article provides eight questions B2B marketers must answer when considering process implementation. These questions address critical components of SEO strategy, which need to be considered when developing a formal SEO process.
1. Do you have agreement on core keyword targets?

Key stakeholders must be in agreement with keyword strategy and core keyword themes that SEO campaigns will revolve around. Keyword research provides the basis for establishing effective keyword targets and eliminating (or at least compromising) on vanity terms, that aren't driven by data.
2. Do you have your arms around the online assets already developed?

It isn't uncommon to find stray domains, microsites, or orphaned pages on a website, when auditing SEO strategy for a new client. B2B search engine marketers need to take inventory of the following online assets:

Web pages on primary websites (and SEO properties such as HTML titles, meta descriptions, etc.)
Domains (and sub-domains)
Marketing and media collateral online
Microsites and landing pages

While organizations should have centralized internal resources for domain administration and marketing collateral, free and premium tools like Xenu, Screaming Frog, and A1 Website Analyzer help crawl and organize website page assets and SEO properties.
3. Does your team understand the competitive landscape?

It's critical to realize your competition for SEO is often a mix of traditional and online organizations. You aren't only competing with product marketing initiatives that add a competitive advantage in the sales cycle, but content marketing initiatives that help websites acquire links and establish keyword strategy.
4. Do decision making personnel understand how their role and department can impact SEO?

While the website development team is an obvious first start, don’t forget the impact other departments can have on a SEO formal process.

Marketing communications and social media for link acquisition and traffic building.
Product marketing integrated with competitive SEO analysis.
Strategic leadership must support SEO initiatives and keyword strategies.

5. Do you have performance KPI’s in place?

Search engine marketing benchmarks are critical for establishing business value. B2B marketers need to consider a combination of metrics that should incorporate keyword visibility, organic search traffic, lead generation, and overall campaign productivity.

These metrics need to be measured on a consistent basis. My suggestion is a combination of monthly, month-to-month, and year-over-year analysis and review.
6. Are your reporting metrics universally accepted?

This might seem like a no-brainer but in larger organizations, with several sites and site owners, web metrics may be run under different programs and priorities. Be certain to review web reporting tools, and the KPI’s which will need to be derived from them, across departments and business units.
7. Do you have internal communication strategies established?

Communication needs to be set with applicable stakeholders with respect to:

Performance check-ins and status meetings
Developments in product marketing and communication strategies
SEO program review and refinement

The best B2B SEO programs keep all applicable parties aware of ongoing initiatives and program successes (and challenges), and provide communication back for continued development.
8. Do you have the proper support structure internally and externally?

Lastly, an SEO program is doomed to fail without the right support structure, which may include upper management and outside vendors and partners. At best, it is “difficult” to run a comprehensive SEO program for even a small organization as a solo practitioner (let alone if other responsibilities are on one’s plate).

The last piece of MarketingSherpa data I will leave you with is that while 84 percent of organizations surveyed ran at least portions of SEO strategy in-house, 30 percent recognized the need to leverage specialized resources (agencies and consultancies) when internal SEO resources were exhausted. SEO for B2B organizations rarely falls on the shoulders of just one individual anymore.
Final Considerations

While this list of questions should be a good start, it is difficult to cover every aspect of a formal B2B SEO process, since organizations have individual requirements and processes already in place, that need to be considered. For example, some B2B organizations blend lead generation and e-commerce in their website experience, which would necessitate a much broader set of requirements.

Hopefully being able to answer (or find answers) to these questions will be a good starting point however, in shifting your organization from running an SEO program that is largely hit or miss, to one that can impact long-term business results.

July Special

If you give a referral to us. A Web presence is a great way to compliment your existing marketing plan. You can use your site to inform customers about your business's services and it makes word-of-mouth advertising easier.

Educate
Use your Website to educate. Potential clients will want to know what you can do for them. Besides giveing them information about you, provide resources to educate them on why they need your services.

LeaderShip
Companies who embrace an online strategy will quickly find themselves in a leadership position because of their increased exposure in the global marketplace. Companies that ignore the web run the risk of having their existing competitors and emerging "dot coms" exploit the web to their advantage.

24/7 Access
Having a website can help broaden the scope of one's business. Customers shop and compare prices now more than ever before and the Internet offers a powerful, quick and efficient way to do so. If your competition is online, you should be there also. Your customers can go online 24 hours a day, seven days a week to get answers and information about your business, even if your business is closed for the day.

Resource
Being online also helps to to reach new clients as your website gives customers and potential customers all the information about your business they need. Online customers will have an immediate resource in their office for reference and referals.

Interact with Customers
Your best customers are repeat and referred customers. There is no better way to keep customers coming back than keeping in touch with them. Through your website you can interact with clients by way of online newsletters, polls or surveys, chat rooms and special deals. When you keep in contact it shows customers you care, one of the best ways to keep them coming back.

Instant Legitimacy
As a customer you want to know the company you are buyiing from is legitimate and runs a reputable business. A well designed website lends legitimacy to your business and leads to increased sales.

Survey Your Audience
The Web is two-way, interactive, and quick communication. When a visitor comes to your website they want to know about your products, services or information. How can you find out exactly why they came or what they're looking for? To get a handle on your potential customer base you can set up a survey to figure out exactly what visitors are interested in. By finding out what they are looking for you can also learn what new trends are on the horizon or features you need to add.

Level the Playing Field
Look and act bigger than you really are. By using multiple e-mail accounts (e.g. Sales@, Info@, shipping@, etc) even a one-person business can look like a multi-person or multi-department operation through a company website. Having an online presence will enable you to compete with much larger and better capitalized companies to promote your goods and services. A well designed website presents a more appealing image than a larger competitor who's web presence appears weak or amateurish.

Customers Expect It
In today's business world, the Internet is the fastest growing source for information. Without a web presence, your business risks never being found by prospective customers.

Just imagine the possibilities!
• Writing efficient HTML code that search engines can easily sift through
• Providing great content that other websites will want to link to

1. Far Cheaper and Much More Flexible Than Print Advertising
The Internet is extremely different from print advertising in that space is cheap, your advertisement is accessible for a longer period of time, the content can be changed without having to ask someone to do it for you (if you use a content management system) and you can potentially reach a wider audience.

This is not to say that you should not use other forms of advertising at all You can use it to entice people to visit your website and find out about your company and potentially open two-way communication between the potential customer and a sales person.

2. Market Expansion
The Internet has allowed businesses to break through the geographical barriers and become accessible, virtually, from any country in the world by a potential customer that has Internet access.

3. Diversify Revenue Streams
A website is not just a medium for representation of your company, it is a form of media from which everybody can acquire information. You can use this media to sell advertising space to other businesses.

A recent trend has risen where businesses feature their very own directory of complimentary services, where the visitor can search for information on a business that will enhance the use of your service. The business sells complimentary businesses a listing in their directory.

A good example is a catering company featuring a directory with businesses such as event co-coordinators, electronic equipment rental companies, etc.

4. 24 7 365
No more turning customers away when its time to close shop, putting up a note saying closed for public holiday , or leaving an irritating message on your answering service specifying your trading hours tell them to visit your website for information they are looking for.

5. Offer Convenience
It is far more convenient for a person to research a product on the Internet than it is to get in a car, drive somewhere and look for or ask someone for information on a product. Also, a potential customer won t have to judge a call centre agent to determine whether he/she has their best interests in mind, or just wants to make a sale.

The potential customer can visit your website whenever they like in their own privacy and comfort, without the stresses and distractions that exist in the real world .
Your website is a self-service medium for example, instead of having to wait in a long cue to pay your TV License, you can now do it electronically through the TV License website.

6. Add Value and Satisfaction
By offering convenience, a point of reference and that touch of individualized customer service, you ultimately add value to your offering and your customers experience a higher level of satisfaction.

Your website can add value in other ways too, by featuring tips, advice and general interest content you can entertain your customers. This will also help them remember you better.

7. Standardize Sales Performance
By looking at which approached / pitches have worked in the past and those which have not, you can produce the ultimate pitch and use it with your website, so that you use it on every customer. No more training of sales people and waiting for them to get a feel for your line of trade.

8. Improve credibility
A website gives you the opportunity to tell potential customers what you are about and why you deserve their trust and confidence. In fact, many people use the internet for pre-purchase research so that they can determine for themselves whether a particular supplier or brand is worthy of their patronage, and won t take them for a ride.
The Internet also allows for Viral Marketing where your website visitors spread positive word-of-mouth about your business - your customers do your marketing!

9. Promote your Brick n Mortar Presence
Getting lost trying to find a place can be frustrating for a potential customer. You can publish what they call a dummy map on your website, which shows directions and landmarks graphically, and the potential customer can print it out when looking for your Brick n Mortar premises.

You might advertise a promotion on your website encouraging the visitor to visit your Brick n Mortar premises (e.g.. At a branch near you! ).
Also, if you recently moved to a new location, you will have to wait for the next 'phone directory to come out before people figure out where you currently are. Because a website is flexible you can change the content as you like you can change you contact details instantly and lower the risk of losing customers when moving to a new location.

10. Growth Opportunity
A website serves as a great place to refer potential investors to, to show them what your company is about, what it has achieved and what it can achieve in future.

11. Two-Way Communicative Marketing
Customers can quickly and easily give feedback on your product and/or marketing approach.

12. Cheap Market Research
You can use features on your website such as visitor polls, online surveys and your website statistics to find out what your customers like more and how they feel about certain aspects of your business to determine how you can improve your product and the way you do business.

Website statistics show you how much traffic your website receives, how the visitor got to your website and where, geographically, the visitor is from.

Thomas Edison

I love Edison's quote, "I have more respect for the person with a single idea who gets there than for the person with a thousand ideas who does nothing".

I love reading about Edison as he was systematic and determined. It seems to me that he never gave up till he had accomplished what he had set out to do.

These are just some of his inventions:
* A quadruplex telegraph system that allowed four messages to travel along a single wire
* The phonograph
* A telephone transmitter
* The electric pen (a machine that would make multiple copies of a document by creating a stencil)
* The electric light bulb

Edison also said, "Many of Life's failures are experienced by people who did not realise how close they were to success when they gave up".

I have been doing some phone canvassing to gain some new customers and I am blown away how many businesses are thinking about or are in the process of closing. In these economic challenging times. We need to keep pressing on till we have achieved what we have set out to do.

Think Outside the Box we Live In!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 319px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oSnvd4zQqY4/TB8-fz49ZdI/AAAAAAAAAW4/ATL2VRLHaIY/s320/think-outside-the-box.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485171587386533330" />

The Great inventors of this world saw a problem that needed fixing. Like Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and not forgetting the Wright Brothers. Some of the greatest innovations came out of a goal to rid the world of evil like in both World Wars. I am sure we will find out the innovations that came out of the present world
conflicts we are now in, one day in the distant future. Mankind continues to leap forward in technological advancements every day solving problems that allow us to achieve our dreams. 50 years ago it was just a dream to make a craft that could travel as far as Mars and beyond.
Well we have done it.

The simple goal of innovation is to solve a problem.
So what is our problem?
Well in your business, what is the problem your customers face?

Are you providing solutions to your customer's problems?

It maybe that you have the problem. Simple or complicated. Say you have information that a customer is unhappy with their existing provider of service. However you do not have the person’s name to get past the front desk. It might be how to market yourself, so people will be attracted to you. Or maybe how to get access to more people who may be more interested in what you have to offer.
As the Ikea company says “Think outside the box we live in”.

Don’t Stop

Keep the momentum going and don’t lose heart.
Thomas Edison knew what it was to continue in what he had set out to achieve through action. I love his quote that says, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” He also said that "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work." Here’s another one, "The three great essentials to achieving anything worthwhile are; first, hard work, second, stick-to-it-iveness, and third, common sense." In his pursuit to invent the light bulb, Thomas Edison did not dwell or describe making a light bulb as a failure, but rather described the experience as a hundred ways not to make it. He made over 1000 attempts before inventing the first long-lasting electric light bulb.

How’s the stick-to-it-iveness?

let’s refresh our minds on some good advice from Thomas Edison.
"The three great essentials to achieving anything worthwhile are; first,
hard work, second, stick-to-it-iveness, and third, common sense."
How’s the stick-to-it-iveness?

Sometimes in business we start out with some great ideas and then the day-to-day workings of busyness rob us of remembering all those things we were going to implement into the business.

Make a decision to analyse where you are and what is next. Every one of us is unique. We all have a unique thumb print. We all have a unique voice. I still think that is so cool. People get bored and frustrated at the same introductions Sales People make. As a Sales Trainer I find it loathsome going into retail stores. They are generally full of young people who have had no training in sales, however one transferable question stays the same for there introduction. You probably know what I am about to say and the general public’s response is just as predictable. The Sales Assistant says, “Can I help you”, and the prospective buying tormented world say, No we are just looking. Aaaaaaaaaagggghhhhhhh! Make your introduction different to the rest of the sales people calling. This person may have talked to 5 other sales calls before you, for the day. You have got a good 10 seconds to impress them. Make it worthwhile for you and them.

Be Enthusiastic!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 169px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_oSnvd4zQqY4/SRKrkokTsmI/AAAAAAAAASk/ciFv7aBskrY/s400/10244.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265459560202875490" />

The word enthusiasm is defined as a feeling of energetic interest in a particular subject or activity and an eagerness to be involved in it. If you are not energetically interested in your product or service, how do you expect someone else to be? Without enthusiasm you are never going to make it through to the person you need to talk to. Do you think the person on the other end of the phone who is screening the call for importance will put you through to the appropriate person if you don’t sound eager and energetically interested in your product or service? Very rarely! To keep enthusiastic, smile, use your hands raise your eyebrows. Be yourself and enjoy the call! The debate is still out on whether smiling or frowning uses more muscles; however the researchers do agree that smiling takes less effort than frowning. Winston Churchill said, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm"

Climb a Mountain

Fulfill the Dream!

I want to share with you a story about a goal I had to take my son, on his thirteenth birthday, away for an adventure weekend to celebrate and welcome him into adulthood.

My chosen destination was the French Alps in a place close to Chamonix, called Argentiere. On the third day I hired a guide and we started on a twenty kilometre trek into the mountains along the Swiss border. Now for me that was a challenge as I was not that fit, however I had a goal to get to the top of the mountain to see Switzerland.

However my son had a different mindset.
He did not have the same motivator. He really struggled getting to the top. I kept on encouraging him but he did not care to see Switzerland.

When we finally got to the top the view was breathtaking and it was really worth the three and a half hour journey.

Once my son got to the top his attitude changed a little, however he now had blisters and was really uncomfortable and he did not want to go anywhere.

So I said, “breathe in the fresh mountain air and look around at where we are, the trees, the snow the gorgeous views over the valley, the ice capped mountains”. I really tried to get him to focus not on blisters but the vast beauty that surrounded him. These things helped a little but it was not the core motivator that would get him down that mountain.

Then I said, “be careful ahead as it was very slippery”. Finally he found his enthusiasm and joy started to flood into his face. He started to push himself along, do skids with his boots, and slide down on his back on the snowed over steep tracks.
He was for the 1st time on the trip getting in front of me and I said that I would be getting down the hill before him. All of sudden he shot off in front.

What had happened to the complaining sore blistered boy of just a few minutes before. Beating his dad down a mountain and sliding on ice with his boots and poles was a far greater thing to focus his mind on than a few blisters on his little toes.

In your life your pain and circumstances can be like those blisters on my sons feet. Sore, uncomfortable, stopping you fullfilling your potential, however you are the only one that can find your reason to climb a mountain. Whatever that mountain may be.

Now, you might think your circumstances might be a little more serious.

As my father used to say, “You are not Robinson Crusoe”. There is always someone worse off than you.

So c’mon, take a step forward by making a plan to achieve your realistic goals.

Do you know what they are?

Let me help you!

To Your Sales Success,

Mike Blayden

Learn more about the temperaments

At the moment I have been working on the Extra-Ordinary Prospecting e-book and dvds. The areas I have been focusing on is how are personalities effect the way we approach and make decisions about a potential product or service.
As sales and business people, if we know how the temperaments work, it is so much easier to identify a customer's need and gain commitment from them. If we don't know how to handle personalities it is trial and error in our approach and if we choose the wrong approach then we have blown the opportunity to sell our product or service. The 4 personalities are:

Sanguine

Melancholy

Choleric

flegmatic

Knowing personalities are not a new thing. Humans have been using the knowledge of these for 1000s of years.

Since the beginning, humans have traded effectively with one another verbally and non-verbally throughout the ages. I am sure mankind has also had the ability to understand their trading partners temperaments as well.
Over 5000 years ago, the Egyptian and the Mesopotamian civilisations believed that healthy body function and body fluids were connected with the elements.
The study of temperaments was formulised as far back as the ancient Greeks. It started with Hippocrates (460-370 BC) four humours theory, this theory described humans to have 4 temperaments or humours, which were affected by body fluids. The ancient Greeks also believed that these four humours or temperaments were associated with the seasons as well as the 4 universal elements.

Well I will keep going and I am looking forward to sharing more in future blogs.

To Your Sales Success

Mike Blayden

Hello Internet Community

let me introduce myself. My name is Mike Blayden!

Let me tell you my story...

I went to a Sales seminar in 1998 and one of the speakers asked us to write down our ideal life. However the catch was that we only had 3 minutes to do it. He encouraged us to break it up into sections like relationships, hobbies, investments career goals etc. He kept on about us writing clear specific goals.

The interesting thing was when I wrote down my ideal life in the area of my career, I really thought I would love to be doing what he was doing, which was helping training and developing people in their motivation, communication and sales techniques. As much as I wanted to do this I had no real idea how. While we were doing this there was another corporate function next door and I could here this music playing. As much as I wanted to help people there was also another need I wanted to accomplish and that was to play music professionally.

At the end of 1999 I was running my own small business marketing water purification units for the consumer market door-to- door (very unhappily)and one night a week I was a profesional entertainer playing guitar and singing in restaurants and hotels.

At this time I had been in sales for 14 years and had a passion for it. However the passion for my product had dwindled and I was really unhappy with the day to day operation of the business.

I had my wife's cousin visiting us and she started to talk about the work she did as a cousellor. She said to me that I did not look very happy in my business and she asked me, “if I had a billion dollars, what would I do with my life”?

Well the first thing I thought of was my need to play music and then I would love to help people in motivation, communication and sales techniques.

At that moment for the 1st time in my life I knew what I needed to do to be happy. The main long term goal I had was to set up a training business.
I had to do whatever it took to be happy and so I sold my business and at in January 2000 I started a new career in training. As a trainer I also used my music to express ideas I wanted to portray and explain.

My life had been set on a course that I knew would be a life commitment to tell the world that they also can achieve whatever they feel will bring happiness in all areas of their life. Especially in the area of communication.

I have had seven years now experience in training and have helped 1000's of people along the way. It is now time to establish myself to as many people as I can worldwide.

My hope is that through fun, humour, music and defined clear objectives I can help you find your potential and put you on the right track to happiness.

I have found through years of training that the best environment to learn in is one that is enjoyable and interactive. However it also needs to have clear an concise objectives.

Watch this space...

To Your Success

Mike Blayden

Taken the Plunge

I have been focussing on writing some articles that I hope will help you in prospecting for new business.
