Let me preface this by disclosing that I'm an Apple fanboy, and have been for over a decade. I adore Apple products for both form and function, and so Apple is always my first choice for gadgetry.

I love this little box! I've been using it for about a week now, and am greatly enjoying the ability to stream media from my MacBook Pro and my iPhone. The interfaces for the iTunes Store, Netflix and YouTube are delightfully easy to navigate, and the Air Play ability has come in handy when I don't want to stop watching a movie but need to leave the room; switching the movie over to my iPhone screen is seamless. One beef about Netflix: occasionally I'll select a movie to stream, and I'll be told that Netflix isn't available right now. But I believe this to be a failing on the part of Netflix, not Apple, as I've encountered similar issues with my girlfriend's TiVO box and Netflix.

Form factor-wise, this device can't be beat. It's footprint in the entertainment center is minuscule, it is so small it can be placed anywhere. I will say that, due to its tiny size, the torque from its power cable or the HDMI cable can cause it to swivel or tilt during placement, but this is so minor it's not even really an issue.

The remote is exactly like the remote that came with my MacBook Pro for use with the Front Row feature; in fact, my Front Row remote controls the Apple TV MC572LL, as well. If you don't like the in-box remote and you have an iPhone or iPod touch, however, the Remote App is free, and is a great alternative. I've used both, and can't really decide which I prefer.

The reason I've given this device 4/5 stars is due to the UI. The user interface is easy to use and runs smoothly, but I can't help imagine what it would be like if it were app-based instead. Because it runs on a modified version of iOS, I believe an app-based UI could be in the Apple TV's future; if and when this happens, you can bet I'll be adding a fifth star to this review. It would also be nice if I could access Hulu or Amazon's streaming library from Apple TV MC572LL.

I recommend this product to anyone with the desire to stream media from their iTunes library, iPod Touch, or iPhone. And of course Netflix, Youtube, and several other online sources. If you're an Apple fan, you'll understand the convenience and aesthetic afforded by this little black box. If you're on the fence, do your research, but please consider this one of the top contenders.

I don't have anything to add that other reviewers haven't covered, no do I have any insights that might help you decide between an Apple TV MC572LL and one of the handful of viable alternative products in this market space.

I use Apple TV MC572LL more for accessing my media library than for viewing internet content. It seems to work equally well at this task whether it is pulling media from a Apple Mac or a Windows-based PC -- as long as you have iTunes installed and configured, which is pretty easy. Even if you have your media stored in Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center, that content is accessible once iTunes is installed and configured. Apple did this by design: the geniuses there must assume that you are connecting it through a higher end sound system. My older Mini Mac, connected in the same fashion and using the exact same remote, allows one to control the volume of the TV MC572LL. At the time of my review, the price has dropped a bit, which makes it even more attractive.

I doubt we'll ever get access to Amazon Prime instant videos via Apple TV MC572LL, nor will we get access to some of the other popular subscription-based services that Apple is blocking. That's business. Hulu Plus -- very doubtful at this writing. But these are the tradeoffs we must endure if we want a reliable, beautiful, simple to use device sold by Apple.

I'm a big fan of my Apple TV MC572LL/A. One small, black box next to the television connects me to a world of entertainment with a simple interface that's so easy, my four-year old nephew knows how to use it. I am constantly amazed at how something so small can deliver a picture with such clarity and with booming surround sound that will shake the neighbors.

Others have written extensively about the Apple TV MC572LL/A's ease of use and reliability. I want to highlight a couple of features that may appeal to a narrower market-slice when trying to make the choice between the Apple TV MC572LL/A and the Roku.

-- International Use - For expatriate Americans, the Apple TV MC572LL/A is a perfect companion. When connected to your international ISP, you can use your Apple ID to log into iTunes. If you are in a place where the internet connection is slow and unable to stream movies instantly, you can download items (rentals and purchases) to your computer and stream them from iTunes to your Apple TV MC572LL/A. It's easy and merely requires that you switch on Home Sharing in iTunes. Netflix and Hulu -- the mainstays of the Roku (and also available on the Apple TV MC572LL/A) -- will not let you stream content if you are not in the

-- Internet Radio - The internet radio interface for the Apple TV MC572LL/A is fantastic. There are lots of internet radio boom boxes available now, but many don't have stereo speakers, and few allow for an easy connection to the best stereo in the house. I've connected the Apple TV MC572LL/A with an HDMI cable to my HDMI-enabled Yamaha receiver. (The receiver has one video out to the television, and has inputs for all of the other video devices. Very convenient.) Many internet radio stations now broadcast at near-FM quality and if you've got a good receiver with a built-in digital-to-analog converter for digital signals, you can sometimes get near-CD quality from internet radio streams.

-- Streaming iTunes music - When I received my Apple TV MC572LL/A, I stopped connecting my iPod directly to my stereo. The Apple TV MC572LL/A gives me a nice, big, on-screen menu for selecting music and playlists from my computer. As with internet radio, it broadcasts my music over the best stereo in the house and provides great sound. Additionally, you can set the Apple TV MC572LL/A's screen saver to show your photos from iPhoto on your TV MC572LL/A screen. It's a nice touch. The Apple TV MC572LL/A makes for a wonderful addition to a walled-garden of home entertainment goodness. It works just as well for the PC user who has an iTunes account. I recommend the Apple TV MC572LL/A to anyone who wants to simplify their home entertainment and wants to create a well-functioning wired environment at home.

I've had the Apple TV MC572LL/A for about a year now and I LOVE it! I've tried one other type of media streaming device and it was not that great especially when compared to the Apple TV MC572LL/A. The Apple TV MC572LL/A is super easy to set up and to use. It connects to your TV MC572LL/A with an HDMI cable. The only problem I found with that, and it is apparently a problem with my TV MC572LL/A, not the Apple TV MC572LL/A, is when plugging it into my HDMI input on the back of my TV MC572LL/A it tells me it cannot play Netflix movies. If I plug it in to the HDMI input on the side of my TV MC572LL/A it works just fine though. I use the Apple TV MC572LL/A mostly for watching Netflix movies or playing movies and music in iTunes. It also has YouTube, sports, internet radio, and you can connect to Flicker or other photo sharing sites. I love that I can connect it with pictures on my computer so when the screensaver comes on it shows pictures of my son and family! It is super easy to connect with your computer by simply opening iTunes on your computer. You need to turn home sharing on, and then your library is instantly connected to your Apple TV MC572LL/A.

The picture quality of Netflix and iTunes movies is great, I have no complaints there! The quality of streaming music is good too, and made even better with my TV MC572LL/A being hooked up to my home theater system. I don't even own a CD player anymore because I can listen to my iPod in the car and use the Apple TV MC572LL/A at home!

The one downside to it is Hulu Plus is not available on it. I wanted to start using Hulu before I got cable and a DVR but it was not available on Apple TV MC572LL/A. I didn't want to buy a second media device though so I purchased the season pass for my favorite show on iTunes. iTunes has a wide variety of movies and TV MC572LL/A shows and being able to stream them through my Apple TV MC572LL/A is a great feature! I use my Apple TV MC572LL/A nearly every day and have had no problems with it. It has also updated the firmware several times since I've owned it.

4. Ipad 2 mirroring you can play games on your ipad 2, and have the video pushed to the apple tv, it actually miorrors your ipad, and some games wil make the ipad in a racing game for example the steering wheel with everything else on the apple tv.
6. If you're looking at pictures on your iphone/ipad you can tell it to push those to the tv, and as you move from picture to picture on the phone it will transition on the tv.
7. If you have a personal library of music/movies/pictures in itunes on your computer and its shared, all those items will appear in the apple tv menu under computer. So your music

10. Rent new release movies from the itunes store right from the apple tv, this includes browsing the top lists, watching a preview of the movie, and clicking rent with it being ready in about 30 seconds to a minute to watch.

I have cut out the cable tv portion of my comcast bill, all I have is over the air tv with an HD antenna, an apple tv, and netflix streaming. I am a major couch potato if that says anything and the apple tv is just amazing. CONS: Doesn't support other movie rental services like amazon prime free movies.

When Amazon offered a free Apple TV last month (October 2011) with purchase of a Yamaha receiver I was about to buy anyway, I was delighted. I'm a bit of an Apple freak. I will only buy Mac computers, I own three different types of iPods, and get most of my music from the iTunes store. So when this tiny, yet powerful unit arrived at the same time as my receiver, I couldn't wait to set it up. First, the good news. The interface is remarkably easy to use. The tiny black box (about 4" x 4") comes with a tiny aluminum remote that controls the content as easily as would an iPod and in the same general way. I got the remote control app for my iPod touch and was soon clicking away on Netflix and YouTube. The nice thing about this unit is that everything is as fast and smooth and elegant as you would expect from an Apple product. Especially compared to the slow, clunky interface on my Panasonic Blu-Ray player.

BUT the bad news is twofold: first, the streaming is all in only 720p for HD content, so you get those annoying color blocks of flattened, upscaled video; and second, there are only HDMI and optical outputs, so on the Yamaha at least, you can't listen to music from the Apple TV in Zone 2, thus I still have to do my wireless iTunes listening through my old AirPort Express.

Had this device for a couple days now, and I think it's a great add-on to any home theatre system, but only worth it on one condition: that you are pretty well-verse with the Apple ecosystem and have at least one iOS device and know your way around iTunes. As a stand-alone streaming product, it's okay, as you can get access to Neflix (of which I cancelled), Flickr and a very modest array of other streaming content (that is pretty limited in my opinion), but where it shines is if you have another iDevice such as an iPhone or iPad. With the addition of AirPlay and using your device to control your Apple TV, it makes the product 20 times better and more useable. So far, I can stream content that's not baked into Apple TV software from my iPhone, such as Pandora, iheartradio and VEVO, just to name a few, and I'm sure there's tons more 3rd party apps that have or will have built-in AirPlay features. Besides that, you can stream anything from your iTunes on your computer, content loaded in your iDevice wirelessly to the ATV.

Cons: Sometimes it has to be reset because it won't see my itunes library. Other times, i'll have to reenter my passwords for wifi or itunes. Can be annoying. Streaming pictures from PC is very slow.

Pros:

1. Streams videos from PC smoothly.
2. Airplay and wireless mirroring is perhaps the main reason to get one. But be aware that you need a wireless network.
3. Ease of use. My 5 yr old can navigate this UI with ease. This was a main consideration since I have a lot of kid's content on there just for her.
4. Flickr is great and a nice way to show off pictures that you upload.

I do wish Apple would put some more apps like Hulu Plus or HBO on this.

I'd recommend this for those who want an easy way to view itunes content on their TV or want to take advantage of wireless mirroring in the ipad 2 and iphone 4S. I'm starting to think of it as more of an accessory for the ipad/iphone.

I was looking forward to this product since it was announced early last month. I'm glad I pulled the trigger and bought it when it became available. For $99 it provides most of the functionality I was paying microsoft $50 a year for. I've become less dependent on the XBOX as a game machine, and more as a Netflix/Media Streamer since my family has grown, and not having to pay for XBOX Live was one of the driving reasons behind this purchase. The reason I say "most of the functionality" is due to it not having the codec support that the XBOX360 comes with out of the box. I've had no issues with playback of mp4 or m4v files, and I'm happy with that, but it lacks support for WMV and AVI (as far as I've experienced). This isn't exactly a deal breaker since I can re-encode any content to supported codecs with handbrake and use iTunes to take care of my video library.

The UI is slick, the setup was somewhat easy (but would have been easier with keyboard support) and the ability to control music from my laptop and desktop is fantastic (through iTunes via the currently limited "airplay" functionality).

I'm really happy with the YouTube, Flickr and Netflix support. They are by far the best I've seen from a media center, but I can see certain aspects being a pain if you use the included remote (there is no keyboard to speak of, and scrolling through letter to spell things out is a hassle). The remote app on iOS devices more than makes up for the lack of a keyboard since it provides added functionality (such as alpha numeric input, quick seeking and library browsing). I look forward to video support with airplay and will update this review once I get to play with that (in November?).

One last thing - it's quiet. The thing barely makes a peep.

I am not an Apple Afficianodo. I don't wear jeans and black turtlenecks in reverence to Steve Jobs. I don't hang out at the Apple Store and covet becoming a "genius"; however, I have to give credit where credit is due. The last few products Apple has brought out - the iPod, iPhone, iPad - have been incredible and changed the consumer electronics and media / software landscape. Apple TV is now positioned to do the same, but it will take some more time to fully realize the potential of this device.

Apple TV effectively allows you to stream whatever is on your iTunes to your TV and home theater system. Moreover, it has built in support for Netflix, You Tube and a few other internet based media content providers. The picture quality and performance for these services are worth the price of admission. There is significant potential to advance the platform - just give it some time.

System Overview: My Apple TV is plugged into a 60 inch Samsung 1080p LED HDTV via HDMI (video) and a Yamaha Home Theater Receiver via Toslink optical cable (audio). I have AT&T Uverse with their 802.11g Residential Gateway (combination of DSL modem and wireless router) with their Elite DSL service (6 MB per second). iTunes runs on a Dell Desktop with 4GB of memory, Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 500 GB Hard Drive operating on Windows Vista (64 bit) and secured with Norton 360 (firewall, antivirus, etc.). The network handles the Desktop, 2 iPhones, a Blackberry, an iPad, the Apple TV, 4 Laptops, a wireless Printer and a networked wired printer. The Computer / Residential Gateway are in the Den and the TV / Home Theater / Apple TV are in the family room. The two rooms are about 100 feet apart and are separated by five walls.

Set Up: Easy as pie. It took five minutes to plug in the HDMI cable, the optical cable, the power outlet and then adding it to the wireless network. Sharing iTunes from my desktop to Apple TV took another 20 minutes, since I had to download the new version of iTunes and restart my computer and Apple TV. Apple really makes it easy - I didn't have to make any adjustments to my firewall settings to share iTunes on the desktop with Apple TV. I also downloaded the Apple Remote on my iPhone and iPad, which took another 5 minutes.

User Interface: Apple's secret sauce is the simplicity of their products. Apple TV is no different. The menu is very simple - Movies, TV, Internet, Computer and Settings. Movies and TV are for renting content directly from iTunes within Apple TV. Internet gives you access to Netflix, You Tube, etc. Computer gives you access to iTunes on your computer. Settings allows you to change the various Apple TV options. The remote control is Apple's usual model of minimalist efficiency, with a menu button, a play / pause button and an iPod like controller. The supplied remote works well with Apple TV, but is a bit cumbersome when one has to enter data (e.g., e-mail addresses, search on YouTube or Netflix). A much better solution is downloading Apple Remote on your iPhone or iPad. It basically turns the iPhone or iPad into a big touch pad that allows you to use gestures to control the Apple TV (e.g., swipe left, swipe right, double click, etc.). Moreover, it automatically provides a keyboard when one is asked for text input (e.g., for search). Apple remote is free on the App Store.

Netflix Streaming / Video Quality: Setting up Netflix was quick - basically just enter your e-mail address / password and you're ready to go. I watched some TV from BBC, a foreign flick and Iron Man. Each program loaded quickly - less than 30 seconds. Picture quality was good to great, depending on the source material. Picture quality was comparable to DVD for SD material(perhaps slightly better), but slightly less sharp than upconverted DVD or blue-ray. HD Programming looked like the HD on-demand programming through uVerse. There was enough of a buffer that there was no jittering, pixelation or stuttering on the streaming to the TV. Sound quality on the stream was good - I don't think they stream in 5.1, so the video stream doesn't leverage the subwoofer. Considering that I'm running a heavily taxed wireless system on 802.11g with a 100 foot distance between Apple TV and the Gateway, the picture quality and streaming performance are impressive. Having this quality of Netflix compatibility is worth the price of admission by itself.

iTunes Streaming: I streamed some music from my Playlists from the Computer. Sound quality is good, but not great. My Yamaha CD Player sounds better, but it can only hold 5 cds. Having access to my entire library is very useful, so you lose sound quality but gain convenience. iTunes streams not only the music, but also the cover art. After a few minutes, Apple TV switches into screensaver mode and starts transmitting pictures to the TV along with the music. I also streamed some videos from my computer and the streaming was again flawless. One of the issues with Apple TV is that it only supports the Apple video standards, i.e., MP4. I had some DIVX files that I converted over to MP4 by using DVD Fab and imported them into iTunes. So if you have a library of AVI, Divx, Xvid, etc., this will require conversion of those files in order to stream from your computer.

iTunes from within Apple TV: There is access to an iTunes store within Apple TV as well. They have a different pricing structure, in that TV shows and movies are available for rent only. They have a limited number of titles at this point - primarily BBC, ABC (since Steve Jobs sits on their Board) and Fox. CBS and NBC are not on Apple TV. Movie selection is decent - they have all the latest movies. The Apple TV selection can be easily increased by just downloading the content you want from iTunes on your desktop and then streaming it to Apple TV.

YouTube Streaming: Surprisingly good. The HQ / HD You Tube pieces look remarkably crisp on the TV. The older content that was meant to watch on a small window on your computer looked a little pixelated, but acceptable.

Apple has built a great platform with a lot of potential. With what is available right now - Apple TV is a pretty impressive value at $99. It is worth it just for the Netflix streaming and integration with iTunes. Since Apple TV is actually built on the same hardware (at least the processing chip) as the iPhone and iPad and has the same operating system, I wouldn't be surprised if there are "apps" that will eventually make it to Apple TV to further enhance Apple TV (e.g., ABC Streaming, Games, Amazon on Demand, etc.). There is supposed to be an upgrade to the operating system with a new version of Airplay that comes out in November, 2010. This will allow you to stream from an iPad or iPod to the Apple TV as well.

I looked at other streaming devices (e.g., Roku, using my Panasonic Blue Ray for Netflix, etc.) and none of them had the simplicity and reliabilty that the Apple TV offers. The Wi Fi "stick" for my Blue Ray player is $80 anyway and the Netflix integration isn't anywhere nearly as robust as Apple TV. UVerse also has music and picture streaming built in using Microsoft Media Center - however, it required some network configuration and it crashes quite often. I didn't purchase a Roku, but a friend of mine has had a number of issues with streaming performance. At under $100, the Apple TV is competitively priced with other streaming options. Now just bring on the "apps".

Update on 4/1/11:

I've had the Apple TV for a few months now and I still really like it. Apple has introduced Airplay, which is worth mentioning as it has potential to be a gamechanger technology. Moreover, there has been significant activity on the "jailbreaking" front for the Apple TV.

Airplay is Apple's system of transmitting video / audio wirelessly between compatible devices. Apple TV, the iPhone and iPad are all Airplay compatible. This has proven to be particularly useful feature as I can stream videos from my iPad to the Apple TV and have them appear on my TV. For example, I may have a digital copy of a movie on my iPad (perhaps purchased through iTunes or came with a DVD purchase). Through Airplay, I can transmit the movie directly from my iPad to the Apple TV and watch the movie on my TV. Similarly, if a friend has an iPhone and we want to listen to their latest music selection, we can stream their music from their iPhone directly to my stereo system through Airplay. The real gamechanger for Airplay is streaming video from websites onto my Apple TV so I can watch them on my TV. For example, I could be on the TED website and they have a video from a TED conference. I can stream the video directly to my Apple TV and watch the video on my TV's 60 inch screen instead of the iPad's 10 inch screen. Several websites have already incorporated Airplay compatibility into their videos, such as CNN and TED. I think Airplay is going to have an interesting adoption cycle - traditional media companies (e.g., TV Networks) probably won't endorse Airplay since it goes against their business model. Other websites that rely on video for traffic (e.g., adult sites, news sites, blogs, etc.) will probably adopt Airplay to gain more traction with consumers.

According to Wikipedia, jailbreaking refers to "a process that allows devices running Apple's iOS operating system to gain full access to unlock all features of the said operating system, thereby removing limitations imposed by Apple". Once jailbroken, iOS users are able to load and run applications that are not available on the App Store. Jailbreaking a device is not illegal, much to Apple's chagrin; however, it could void one's warranty. I'm not going into how to jailbreak and Apple TV - just google "jailbreak Apple TV" for instructions. Since the Apple TV has been jailbroken, there have been some applications that have been launched to provide more robust usage of Apple TV. The Couch Surfer application is basically a web browser for Apple TV. Additionally, there are applications that allow Apple TV to play formats other than Apple approved formats, such as DIVX and others. I haven't jailbroken my Apple TV; however, one should be aware of what options are available for this device.
