This book's plot focuses on Charlotte Locke, a senior in highschool with a learning disability. Because of this disability, Charlotte scores some bad test scores and is forced to go to a school that is definetally not her top choice. While her genius brother makes it into the extremely nice school filled with talent, she is left at a new public highschool. This new change does not help Charlotte for the better though. In the chaotic school she manages to find two new friends. This is where her story begins. With these friends Charlotte tries new things and is pressured into things that she would have never imagined. Overall I think that this book was good, but could have been improved. I felt that it was pretty predictable and never had me curious about what was going to happen next. I think that the theme was good, but the characters could have had a little more depth to them. Thought the characters were not top notch, I enjoyed the way that the other ended it. I think that this books would be very relatable to many young girls because it involves personal struggles that many modern day girls face. In the end I though it was a pretty good book.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
Girl Wonder by Alexa Martin

The Teen Review from the Marathon County Public Library

Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare in 1594, demonstrates the purely romantic notion of ‘love at first sight’. In modern society, ‘love at first sight’ is considered more of a movie tag-line than an actual feeling. Many argue on whether it is possible to be in love with them based on a glance, and the magic to it only adds to the wonder.

Shakespeare was very blunt. He wrote Romeo as seeing Juliet, and knowing they were meant to be. The whole story only takes place in less than a week, and yet these two were ready to die for each other. The romantic, and tragic, plot-line brought many people to the theatre to watch it play out. This was the story everyone wanted to hear- of two people who were destined. One modern movie to show similar ideals, yet a completely different plot, was Only You, starring Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. This movie reminded me of Romeo and Juliet because of the mythical theme of love at first sight.

I do not believe in ‘love at first sight’. It has come to my attention, due to the number of movies, tv shows, tabloids, ect. that ‘love at first sight’ is often nothing more than lust. The idea that you could see someone and just KNOW seems so implausible to me. When I see someone who I think I might want to someday date, it’s because I see them doing something kind, or they are really attractive. It’s never just that I know. I do not feel that you can truly love someone by only seeing them. It takes a while to get to that place with a person.

As web-show-host Charlie McDonnell sings in his song “Chemical Love”, love at first sight is nothing more than Dopamine entering the brain. This chemical reaction is a catecholamine neurotransmitter, which means it sends a message to your brain, to tell you that the person you are looking at may be a choice for a future suitor. “Love” isn’t chemically possible until you have the reaction of Norepinephrine, which is the chemical that says you want to stay with this person forever- love. The only reason, besides guilt, that people do not cheat on their partners is because norepinephrine tells them they don’t want to. Norepinephrine is not an instant reaction. It cannot happen on sight.

Lastly, ‘love at first sight’ does not mean that the love will last. In my opinion, Juliet and Romeo were lucky to die, before they had a falling through and got stuck with eachother. They died loving eachother, which is more than I can say for if they’d lived, gotten to know eachother, and bickered like banshees for the rest of their days. Love doesn’t always last. You can fall in and out of love plenty of times. I know people who can love multiple times over again, as well. I do believe that you can love someone without knowing it, and then find out one day. (Demonstrated in Petals in the Wind, by V.C. Andrews, where Cathy finds men who have similar traits to a man she dancing when she was 12, only to have an affair with later in life, and find out that he was her true love the whole time.)

So no, I do not believe in ‘love at first sight’ as Shakespeare wrote it. I believe that love is a lot more complicated than that. It takes time to nurture and achieve, and one cannot feel that deeply about a person by just seeing them. That is why ‘love at first sight’ is never portrayed or heard of happening to obese, ugly, distorted, or any other less-than-attractive people. I do not feel that this romantic notion is anything but that- a notion, not an emotion.
... The dialogues were pointless, the characters were shallow, and the plot dragged like there was no tomorrow. I mean, why write a book if there is no story to it?! A girl is hit by a falling TV, her brain is transplanted into the body of Nikki Howard, a famous supermodel, and she has to live Nikki's life while the general public thinks that the girl who was hit by the TV was killed. Tragic. I don't really care that she has to keep up with all of Nikki's endorsement deals or that her former best friend who she secretly had a crush on thinks she's dead! Reading this book is a complete waste of time, so please take my advice and spare yourself the torture of reading it.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
Airhead by Meg Cabot

The Teen Review from the Marathon County Public Library

Twisted by Sara Shepard

Rating: Excellent! Who is this new A? Will the lives of Rosewood teenagers Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily never return to how they used to be before the four girls were befriended by Ali? Twisted is the ninth book in the Pretty Little Liars series and is DEFINITELY worth reading. The writing quality does not quite match up to the other books', but there are more than enough plot twists and cliffhangers to compensate. You will be hooked till the very last word, and then you will have to wait in suspense till December, when the next book will be released. If you haven't read the first eight books in the series, then you should get in your car and head to the library right now, because you are missing out on one of the best book series' that has ever been written.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
Twisted by Sara Shepard

The Teen Review from the Marathon County Public Library

New books! The book was surprising and confusing at first, but as I got closer to the end it got more understandable.
At first it had talked about using mini vacuums, turning them into kill bots and having them save the world.
Save the world from what you might ask, pirates zombies mummies aliens vampires, werewolves and ninjas is what the robot army is for.
Closer to the end it talked about mini robots maybe? Ah eh giant ninja slsying robots is what it talks about.
My over all reaction is wow I thought this was goin' to be worse. This was a realy great book. I highly recommend this to many.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
How To Build A Robot Army by Wilson Daniel H

The Teen Review from the Marathon County Public Library

ELDEST by Christopher Paolini

Rating: Excellent! Will Toby ever come back to his dad and his best friends? Or will he die of starvation and freeze to death? This story is about six friends who start a game/club and they are all Gypsies (in the game). (The main characters)"¦ Melanie and April notice that Toby (the other main character) is acting a little weird so they decide to do some investigating on Toby to see what's wrong. April and Melanie go to their club (the storage yard) and find Toby there and they ask him what's wrong. He tells them that his mom's parents want to adopt him since the grandparents other son has the last name Mayfield and he does not want to have any kids. So then he tells April and Melanie that the last name Mayfield won't carry on through the family anymore so if the grandparents adopt him they would change his last name to Mayfield and the family's last name would keep on going. Toby is scared to death that his dad will give him up and he will never see his family again. The next day the friends get a call that's says Toby ran away.

 -------------------------------------------

Find this Book in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):
The Gypsy Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder

The Teen Review from the Marathon County Public Library

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

 Rating: Excellent!
