have a crucial role in the future value-based pricing arrangements for branded medicines.

build on its current drug evaluation processes by giving it broader scope to assess a medicine’s benefits and costs. The aim is to make sure that the price the NHS pays for new medicines is more closely linked to their value to NHS patients and society.

NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement (NHS III)

Joseph Liddane has been re-appointed as a member responsible for chairing the audit committee of NHS III with effect from 1 to 31 March 2013, when the organisation is going to be abolished. The appointment is for a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month and remuneration is £13,137 per annum. Joseph Liddane is also chair of Whittington NHS Trust. She has declared no political activity.

The Government confirmed the plans in its official response to the Health Select Committee’s report on the future role of NICE which has been published today. The move will give NICE a crucial role in the future value-based pricing arrangements for branded medicines. It will allow the body to build on its current drug evaluation processes by giving it broader scope to assess a medicine’s benefits and costs. The aim is to make sure that the price the NHS pays for new medicines is more closely linked to their value to NHS patients and society.

The 2013/14 programme will begin with a national reminder lung cancer symptom awareness campaign in July 2013, with a further national campaign planned in autumn 2013 and two regional campaigns in early 2014. The decision about which campaigns will run in addition to the lung campaign will be taken once further evaluation data from this year’s campaigns become available.

Supported by a £1 million fund from the Department of Health and managed by the NHS Institute, the PFC has supported nine separate projects.

The guiding principle of the PFC was to develop innovative solutions to measuring and improving the experience of patients, their families and NHS staff, while also spreading this good practice systemically throughout the service.

Though the challenge itself ends on 31 March the work undertaken by the projects will continue, and anyone interested in adopting any of the approaches used should contact the project lead for more information. Full details of the projects and contacts can be found here

All those undergoing postgraduate medical training in the UK are required to take part in the survey, which is a core part of the work the GMC does to monitor the quality of medical education and training. The GMC will be writing to all trainees in March to ask them to respond to the survey, and will work with deaneries and local education providers to maximise the rate of response.
