I'm a sucker for Inca-style graphics, I think the Inca / Mayan culture developed the most beautiful and intrigueing style of iconography and symbolism, greater in beauty than the Egyptian hieroglyphics, imho. Came across the above in an organic food store. The cardboard was pulpy - suggesting recycled paper stock. And the colours were well embedded in the print surface, giving that organic aesthetic that is becoming more and more appreciated in our culture.</p> </p> <p><a 12.0px Helvetica;">...a few words on my own logo, the ideas behind it and the design decisions made. It made sense just to base it on my own name because I'm a sole freelancer, although I do plan on working in collaborations and other companies in the future. But I wanted to create 'brand' to put present and future 'personal' projects under.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;"> </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">I thrawled through many fonts and styles and kept coming back to 'Cochin' because I love the ascender sweep in the lower case 'd'.  I decided in the end to take out a calligraphy pen and have a middle ground between my personal signature and fonts I feel reflect my viewpoint as a designer. I experimented with incorporating chinese/cyrillic/arabic symbols into the logo as a 'texture' to represent my love of typography - but it was just getting far too busy.  The circular shape brings strength to the logo and forms it as a unit. And of all the shapes I think the circle is more appropriate for a creative service than any other. I chose the cyan blue as the lead brand colour as, although cold, it has a brightness and positivity to it that I continually aspire to.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;"> </p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica;">For the logo 'descriptor' I chose 'artisan design'.  In an age of digital ready-mades I really want to emphasis the thought, strategy and manual skill I put into projects for clients. The label is printed on beautiful cotton paper with a metallic solid. The flat-art illustration harks back to the 'wood-print' style and is complimented with classic/stylish font choices. <p />It did reflect the wine in that it had a rich 'grape-fruity' taste. the message in the covers for the <a href="http://www.dallasobserver.com" title="Dallas Observer website">Dallas Observer</a>. From what I see, the philosophical difference in these covers is that, purely, "message is king", as opposed to the "branding is king" direction of nearly every other periodical existing today.<p />You'll see in the covers I've selected here (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/holypistolero/sets/72157609034541729" title="Dallas Observer Covers on Flickr ">from a vast range of brilliance</a>) that the graphical style, and even the masthead/logo, changes in every cover to suit the single, unambiguous message. This really is the drum I beat for Graphic Design and Art - that "message" is king and graphical style and visual expression follows <strong>after</strong> the establishment of message.<p />The driving force behind these covers is art director and designer <a href="http://www.outlabel.com" title="Alexander Flores website">Alexander Flores</a>. And now that I'm doing so, it's definitely having a knock-on effect in improving my sense of proportion and general balance when it comes to design. The red roasted colours with a traditional spud sack texture made me think "yeah, I could wolf them down right now".  Love that iron-brand type too, so Texan. And it's complimented with a wood-block and simple script style font. The packaging has a 'special' also - a spot silver.  Not so keen on the <a href="http://www.odonnellscrisps.com" title="O'Donnell's Crisps Website">website</a> - far, far too digitised-lookin' for a href="http://www.boulevardrange.ie/" title="Boulevard Range website">brochure website</a> with a product catalogue that I designed for a company that provides "street furniture" in traditional cast iron as well as a full range of modern styles and materials.<p />For the visual branding of the logo and website I took inspiration from the traditional cast iron styling, I felt this was the strongest approach visually and what would also set the company apart from competitors.<p />I used <a href="http://www.linotype.com/666/georgbelwe.html" title="Profile of Georg Belwe">Belwe</a> as the lead decorative font as it is typical of the decorative / utilitarian fonts used in cast iron furniture. <p />Most of the product imagery was supplied by the client but I had to supplement it with a one-page website for <a href="http://www.limebase.ie" title="Limebase website">Limebase</a>. The company focuses on digital marketing for the artistic community, with even more focus on electronic music artists / DJs.<p />With the logo and visuals I went for a grungy, textured style choosing photographic imagery over "vector", or flat-art, illustration (well actually I mixed the both, but grunge takes the lead). Electro graphics tend to be more vector based but the Limebase brand demanded the unpredictability and layering of urban textures and colours.<p />For the logotype I used Courier New, a mono-weight, slab-serif font that is bold, strong and has no airs and graces. The green is luminous and pushes the wide colour range offered by <abbr title="Red Green Blue colour mode">RGB</abbr>, but will be printed as a Pantone colour for the more limited <abbr title="Cyan Magenta Yellow Black colour mode">CMYK</abbr> gamut.<p />I chose an image of a lime splashing in water with a textured old frame for the logo to match with a visually rich and impactful style of graphics. For the roll-out of this style I used some of my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinduggandesign/" title="View my Flickr account">own photo notes</a> (found typography etc) for background imagery.<p />I mixed some vector illustrations with this for contrast. Because Limebase uses free online technologies to promote artists, it's kinda like power in the hands of any individual. A bit revolutionary, me thinks. Based in east London, the company was formed by two college buddies (Chris Gove and Robert Evans) who both shared a passion for music and a highly stylistic approach to design.<p />The graphical style ranges from urban retro to vaudeville but always current, quirky and tastefully executed. Jordan Jelev is a Bulgarian typographer and Art Director with a career path to design that is as interesting as his highly skilled portfolio. Jordan first got experience in design through his stint in the navy. Then, while studying for a degree in economics, he was temping for a design studio where his true talents became apparent.<p />Jordan is noted for his work with wine labels, although his portfolio spans all areas of graphic design. He uses both 'traditional' and digital tools including bayonette and copperplate nibs, parallel and automatic pens, ink droppers, brushes, and a Wacom tablet for the digital stuff.
