The summer issue has a haenyo and beach theme with great features on artists, food and guesthouses—highly recommend getting your hands on a copy.

After downloading the Think Dirty app on the recommendation of this healthy app round-up, it’s time for a product overhaul as it seems most of my make-up/skincare products are trying to kill me. ITG’s round-ups of the best organic make-up and skin care have been useful starting points.

Hunting Songs

Four years in the making—Tim’s Hunting Songs is finally ready for release! I put together the website using Cargo, with many lovely contributions from artists to accompany the songs, including this one from Kate Miss and this one from Anabela Piersol (and hopefully a few more to come). The album cover, a white ink drawing on black paper by Tess Jenkins, was the perfect center for the project. You can download the album for free on Bandcamp or listen on Soundcloud.

I always like to know which songs on an album to listen to first, to prime myself before listening to the less accessible ones: try starting with The Place, Safe For Now, Waking Up, Jars and Treehouse.

I could see the room dividing as I spoke. I could hear the laughter of some and louder still silence of others. I realised that for some people this was regarded as an event with import. The magazine, the sponsors and some of those in attendance saw it as a kind of ceremony that warranted respect. In effect, it is a corporate ritual, an alliance between a media organisation, GQ, and a commercial entity, Hugo Boss. What dawned on me as the night went on is that even in apparently frivolous conditions the establishment asserts control, and won’t tolerate having that assertion challenged, even flippantly, by that most beautifully adept tool: comedy.

The jokes about Hugo Boss were not intended to herald a campaign to destroy them. They’re not Monsanto or Halliburton, the contemporary corporate allies of modern-day fascism; they are, I thought, an irrelevant menswear supplier with a double-dodgy history. The evening, though, provided an interesting opportunity to see how power structures preserve their agenda, even in a chintzy microcosm.

–Read this instead of Jonathan Franzen’s dyspeptic jibber-jabber.

2002 / 2006 – 2011

‘I took ceramic trash from a ceramic master who reproduces old Korean ceramics such as Joseon Baekja or Celadon. After baking in a kiln by using the old method, ceramic masters break almost 70 percent of the porcelains that don’t reach up to their standards of masterpieces. I put the broken bits and pieces of ceramic trash together one by one as if I’m putting together a jigsaw puzzle. And I cover the seams with 24 karat gold leaf. The result was uncanny and bumpy objects. Each broken piece operates as a self forming into an infinite proliferation toward as unexpected fabrication—fictitious loquacity and stuttering discards from standard conventional masterpieces.’ —Yee Sookyung

Katrin’s whole Honeymoon show is dreamy but I got a special thrill from seeing this film photo of mine in a new form; it started me thinking of our life in Stellenbosch. The white-washed Cape Dutch houses, gorgeous people and landscapes, endless cups of rooibos, braai pizzas, jars of flowers from our street (a habit I’ve carried over from Katrin), Die Antwoord, visits to markets and farms and shops and cafés, baking banana bread in our old oven, my wee bedroom and brass bed. I didn’t have the first idea about South Africa before arriving but the Cape has stayed a home-like place in my mind.

I still love telling people that we met through this blog and ended up living together with Anri—to me the best proof that we can trust the internet to nurture good connections. South Africa feels a little far away right now and I miss it very much, but its warmth and beauty will be there the next time I visit.
