In 1973 she moved her family to Calgary, AB, where she spent the next sixteen years working in the retail clothing business and raising her family. From 1989 to her passing she devoted herself to her five grandchildren, Kristen, Aaron, Wendel, Kurtis and Sean to whom she loved and adored.

McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes of Calgary, AB: information regarding DICKSON – Parker Archibald (Arch)

February 22, 1927 – August 31, 2010

Parker Archibald (Arch) Dickson passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 83 years of age in Calgary. Survived by June, his wife of 61 years, children Peter (Chris), Margaret, Myrla Bulman (Steve), Barb Homer (Don) and grandchildren Stephanie and Shauna Bulman, and Jeff, Amy and Michael Homer, sister Jean Fox, many dear cousins, nieces and nephews, and Secret, the last in a lifetime’s worth of well-loved dogs. Predeceased by his parents Hugh and Annie Dickson and his brother Hugh Jr.

Born in Onslow, Nova Scotia on February 22, 1927, Arch first came west as a teenager to the cattle ranches of his four Gilchrist uncles. Captivated by the scale of the prairie landscape, he convinced June, his bride-to-be, to join him in 1949. After several years working on ranches with cousins and friends they moved to the city. Time as an insurance adjuster allowed Arch to explore the province before he started his own business as a service station operator with BA, Gulf and finally PetroCanada. He was National President of the Automotive Retailers Association during the energy crisis of the mid 1970s and received awards for exceptional levels of customer service and corporate professionalism.

His Maritime nature showed in community contribution. He was a founding elder of St. Andrews United Church, a devoted driver with Meals on Wheels and Neighbourlink, and delighted in a year as a chaperone for the Hidy and Howdy mascots of the 1988 Olympics. All those who met Arch will remember his firm handshake and clear blue eyes meeting theirs. He was truly interested in what was happening in the lives of all those he met and cherished strong ties with family, friends and work colleagues. He loved to discuss world and local events over coffee and his thoughtful insights will be missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church (924 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Arch’s memory to Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute at the University of Calgary (3280 Hospital Drive N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4Z6) or Calgary Meals on Wheels (3610 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 2P9). Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Arch Dickson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes of Calgary, AB: information regarding FINLEY – Nan V.

March 01, 1933 – August 28, 2010

NAN V FINLEY, our dynamic, vivacious Mum, will always be known for her dazzling smile, her blue-eyed sparkle and her contagious laugh. Nan Finley lit up a room. Within minutes, you felt you’d known her an eternity. She knew your heart…she shared your spirit…she spoke your language. Nan had your back, and warmed you to the core with a spirit that moved mountains.

Nan (daughter of Verna Clarke and Leslie Kennedy) was born in Westmount, Montreal in 1933 where she attended Roslyn School, Compton Hall for Girls, and McGill University before being swept off her feet by Alan H Finley, MD whom she married at “only TWENTY for heaven’s sake”. Three children followed “far too closely” and the whirlwind of family life took Nan to Boston, Los Angeles, and Nairobi…(with travels to Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Orient) before arriving in Calgary in 1971. A world traveller…her home (and heart) remained at Lac Cornu, Quebec…

Nan plunged into volunteer work and fundraising for various charities, devoting 17 years to CUSO, as a Recruitment Officer on the SAIT campus. Her “acceptance rate” by Head Office in Ottawa was 100 percent: if you were endorsed by Nan you went straight to the top.

More than “young at heart”, the generations blurred in her company. She was first with a cassette tape recorder, a walk-about phone, a CD player and finally, a Laptop. She was the first in her group to use on-line banking, “friend” her grandchildren on Facebook (aka “FaceLift”), and invite her buddies at Trinity over to watch a DVD on her flat-screen TV.

A woman ahead of her time, Nan knew when to “put her feet up” and find her heart in the people she loved: her three children Brenda (Martin Scott), Donna (Martin Lesperance), and Brian (Donna Bennett); her five grandchildren (Ben, Becca, Jeff, Adam and Mary); her two sisters (Shirley Love and family; Lali and Dick Jones and family); the “life-long friends” she never knew she had (!) at Trinity Lodge; and many, many others.

Nan’s devotion to home and family, her relish for the stock market, her passion for music and the arts live on in her children, grandchildren, and the countless people she touched. A Celebration of the Life of our remarkable Mum will be held at Trinity Lodge (Calgary) on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Later this month, we’ll gather in the Laurentians amidst the glorious colours of a Quebec autumn. Thank you with all our hearts, Nan…Gran Nan…Mum. (Mercy! That was long.)

Mum would appreciate your donation to the Westben Arts Festival Theatre (www.westben.ca).
