As I mentioned in my last two posts, the “Nose Pick’en Idol” series is something I started drawing back in 2007. Yes, I get it.  I’m a. . . . . . . . . . procrastinator on some projects! It may be a Bipolar thing. I start so many wonderful IDEAS then never quite finish them.  Not that I think picking my nose is wonderful.  Unless, I get that big dried-out snot with the roots… Ah, you guys know what I’m talking about!

I hate that I pick my nose sometimes. I DON’T EAT IT!  Also, I am a germaphobe! So, Rhinotillexomania is like an oxymoron; much like my Bipolar. Fear not, I go through gallons of Germ-X and other hand sanitizers!

Picking noses is not just a male thing. I’ve seen a lot of women do it.  But, they always try and hide it with some type of distraction!  Just like the above cartoon: “Pinky Finger Nose Picker.”

In my last post, I told you I started the “Nose Pick’en Idol series back in 2007.  Why did I wait so long before I published it?  Well, first. because the cartoon is made up of  20 different components/cartoons just to make one cartoon.  I drew out each caricature separately and different parts of the stage along with with each judge. It’s more of a puzzle than one cartoon. I inked and scanned each part in and slowly cleaned up each image. By the time I was done with the stage and the judges American Idol was over.

The Magazine I was going to try and sell them to, “Bonkers,” rejected my first 12 cartoons of “Da Stew-Pid world” but they encouraged me to keep sending them more.  I felt dejected and pissed so I put the cartoons in a file and forgot about them till Saturday, February 4th.

I was down and a bit depressed on the 4th. I was able to get out of the mild depression by drawing and finishing “Nose Pick’en Idol.”  Yeah, I procrastinate a bit!  The 5 cartoons are now homage to guys.  Let’s call it…gross week!

Welcome to the restart of this series (which began back in 2007). It was intended for my cartoon series called “Da’ Stew-Pid World” – a series that transformed, naturally, into the Mental Health humor cartoons drawn by me, Chato Stewart.

I drew 5 caricatures/contestants for this made up T.V. show Nose Pick’en Idol… Yes, I was making fun of American Idol at the time.  Habitual nose picking is called Rhinotillexomaniana (Pronunciation: rhī′nō-til-ek-sō-mā′nē-ă).

These cartoons are not to make fun of Rhinotillexomaniana!  Nope, it is/was not my intention to do that with these cartoons.  Rather, I wanted to show some of the different styles of nose picken’ for the rest of the population!

Come on, let’s face it, 90% of the human race does, from time to time, pick their nose!  It is a fact of life. Everybody poops, and most everybody at one time or another picks their nose – gross as you may think it is. This was my first full participation in a twitter chat, there must’ve been over 200 people tweeting and re-tweeting the same messages of “congratulations” to all the award winners.

Nonetheless, you’re here for the answer to the real question… Did Chato Stewart who was a Hilarious Health Activist Award Finalist win the award?

NO!

I knew it was a long shot, but just a recognition alone and the honorable mention has opened up a door to my advocacy for mental health humor. I can tell you that, today, I made some very powerful comrades in arms for advocacy! They are fighting the fine fight for different causes, yet, at the same time, we are all fighting together and we are a large army of advocates.  I want to Thank my fellow finalists:  Christie Germans, Chato Stewart (hey that’s me), Rick Green, Jaquie Wojcik, Jackie Zimmerman and Doug Ankerman.

Why You Should Care If I Won?

Because My Vow May Cause Mass Hysteria, Per Se.

Next year, Chato Stewart VOWS that WeGo Health shall rue the day they didn’t pick me!  From this point on, my quest is to be the utter fool, the funniest, most jest-full, ruler of mirth this side of the Internet. This past year (2011) they started the Health Activist Awards.  I was nominated for two awards from my peers.  The nominations were given to Health Activist Judging Panels to pick their favorites out of all the nominees. It was a time-intensive task and the  judges took the responsibility quite seriously.

Christie Germans – The Lesion Journals

My name is Christie and I am 40 something years old. Back in July of 2009, just after finishing a great bike ride, a good part of the right side of my face, neck, and shoulders went about 80% numb. Naturally this freaked me out but we initially attributed it to a pinched nerve that likely resulted from incorrect positioning while cycling. The feeling remained for 10 days so I got an MRI.

In the meanwhile, I started visiting the bone cracker and while I felt great after my appointments, the tingling and numbing remained and spread to my right fingers and hand. The initial MRI scan revealed a small bulging disc and unidentified shadowing along my spinal cord. I scheduled an appointment with a neurologist and heard whispers of “MS” in my head. After my first appointment with the neurologist, we began to say the words “MS” out loud.

Chato Stewart – Mental Health Humor

Chato Stewart is a husband, father and mental health advocate. He is an artist and the cartoonist behind the Mental Health Humor cartoons. He creates positive, provoking, and sometimes even funny cartoons! The cartoons are drawn from his personal experience of living with Bipolar Disorder. Mr. Stewart strongly believes that there is power behind humor. His motto is humor gives help, hope and healing. His goal and mission is to tap into humor and use it as a positive tool to cope with the serious and debilitating effects of mental illness.

Rick Green – Totally ADD

My name is Jacquie. I’m in my early 30s, and have had Type 1 diabetes since I was 12. I’m a long-time DOC stalker who finally decided to throw my insulin pump into the ring. I use a MiniMed Paradigm 722 and a REAL-time CGM to, you know, stay alive and stuff.

I’m married with a dog and a cat. I work in advertising. I really like beer.

Jenny – The Bloggess

I write for Good Mom/Bad Mom on the Houston Chronicle, but I needed an uncensored space to say the f-word and talk about ninjas so I started this blog.  If you know me in real life you might not want to be here.  I also write a satirical sex column, a parenting column that will make you wish you’d decided to just stick with dogs and I twitter a lot.  Also, I can balance live cats on my head but no one will pay me for it.  Yet. I have a book coming out in 2012. I assure you, no one is more surprised about this than me.

Jackie Zimmerman – Blood, Poop, & Tears

Hi I’m Jackie. I’m a 25 year old woman child from my native state of Michigan. I have a bit of an interesting UC story so bear with me while I get my intro out of the way. I was officially diagnosed with UC in May of 2009, but had symptoms for easily 10 years. In October 2006 I was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I’m a bit of an auto-immune allstar. Long story short in 2009 I was admitted to the hospital 4 times and the ER 6 times for my UC. Asacol gave me a pericardiac effusion resulting in a lot of pain and emergency surgery around my heart.

Doug Ankerman – My Odd Sock

 I am a former advertising copywriter just looking to keep my writing chops sharp. My life began as an embryo after my father flashed a sly smile at my mother. (His gold tooth would get her every time!) Upon graduation from The Ohio State University with a scholarly 2.3 GPA, I pursued a brief career as a stand-up comedian, followed by 22 years of work in the media. Currently, I share a modest abode in Northeast Ohio with my lovely bride and two teenage sons. And my ever-present cane you ask? I walk with it not because I am a fan of tap dancing, but because in 1997 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

I grew up in a Toxic Dump! No, really. It was rumored that back in the 50s, the projects I grew up there was an illegal toxic dump site. Back  then the housing development was just a swamp.

I grew up in an emotionally toxic environment as well. My father had uncontrolled rage and anger issues stemming from undiagnosed Bipolar Disorder. (He was not diagnosed until a few years before his death.)  Along with this undiagnosed mental disorder, my Father was also heavily medicated on painkillers from an accident that happened at the post office where he worked. My father was a US mail carrier. On his day off of work, he went in to help unload the trucks and one of the sliding doors came slamming down on his head…rupturing three Intervertebral Discs in his neck. (“Normally, the disc remains firmly contained between the vertebral bones.  The disc can, however, rupture.  Ruptures occur when the fibrous covering of the annulus is torn” see:  Intervertebral Disc).  Needless to say, this added more pain to an already difficult, toxic home environment/life.

Yes, I grew up in both a literal and figurative toxic environment.  With the external environment of growing up in the projects, you quickly learn how to fight. (Usually because you get beat up all the time. In order to survive, you have to defend yourself.)  Until I was 13, I was a scrawny little thing; that meant the weakling.  So, I got beat up a lot.

You learn hate. You learn rage. You learn prejudice from all the toxic education.  Escaping, fleeing that toxicity overload takes a lot a work!  It took my family close to 17 years.  But by then, a lot of the damage was done!  What safeguarded me and started my mental detoxification was being introduced to the Bible at the age 14… By then, I already had a nickname (in the projects) “Psycho Stew” and a reputation for causing trouble.  While I was not the worst-case scenario of a troublemaker, I definitely was on my way to becoming a real thug.

When I say the Bible saved my life, I really mean it.  I started studying with a local religious group.  For the first time in my short life, things started to make sense.

For example, I had a diluted view of other people’s property. If I wanted it, I took it.  Why? because that’s how it  was in the projects! You got a look out for yourself. My father taught me this twisted lesson. This is the same man that all my life called me stupid, retarded, worthless, and a host of other insults.  The same man who showed me that a belt wasn’t just for holding up your pants and that it makes a useful disciplinary tool.

When I started studying, one of the first things I learned was that lying and stealing was wrong.  It hurts others.  It’s pretty sad that you have to learn that at 14 and not before then — I was taught deny, deny, deny and lie, lie, lie! How foolish I was back then.  That was part of my toxic education; learning negative coping skills that hurt myself and others.  Even though I was studying the Bible, I wasn’t totally getting the concept of stealing being wrong. I think this is where the mental illness took over.

I truly believed I was doing good by stealing. If I was giving what I took to other people, it was as if I was Robin Hood!  I never took cash. Why?  Because that would “really” be  “stealing.”  Again, that was what I believed. The deluded mind taking over and rationalizing that I was doing good and not ultimately being selfish, unloving, unkind.

No, I’m not getting all biblical on you right now.  I’m just trying to explain where my mind was during this point of time in my life. The things I was learning from my Bible study, I eventually and gradually began to make practical applications of.  I was learning to treat others the way I want to be treated. To show love.

If I didn’t want my stuff stolen, should I be stealing other people’s stuff?!  If I didn’t like being beat up, should I beat others up?!  If I didn’t like being called stupid, worthless, etc., should I be calling others stupid, worthless, etc.?! I was slowly eradicating and detoxifying myself both physically and mentally from my childhood.  I was able to come complete circle from my old, troubled way of life.  And at the age of 18, I made a dedication to my new biblical training.

I left that toxic environment behind. I was on a new road that was cleansed from my old ways.  At least, that’s what I thought.  You see my faith was a shield from the world’s toxicity and hate.  My faith was the detoxification from my former hate and rage.  I was able to keep my self-loathing and self-hatred controlled to some degree.  My mood swings, when I was younger,  usually leaned toward the manic side. I did have a number of crashes, but, I had my faith to rely on and I did so.  It got me through it.

Moving forward to my thirties, I had what some would call a major psychotic episode.  I totally lost touch with reality and my faith, my shield was lost and many toxic emotions erupted like a volcano exploding!  I sank into a very deep depression with moments of psychosis.  Ever since then, I’ve been trying to detoxify/recover…making small progress forward on my continuing journey of recovery.  All along trying to “recapture” my faith and hold on with just  my fingertips.  And at times, just wanting to let go and end all the suffering.

What pains me the most at times is: that my mental illness may have, most likely has, created a toxic environment for my own children because for part of their life, unfortunately, my symptoms were uncontrolled.  I am working hard to better myself and create the loving home environment that I needed/wanted as a kid.

I used to work for a guy who always liked to say: “if it ain’t broke DON’T fix it.” What worked for me when I was 14 was building an appreciation for the Bible and practical, life-saving principles I found therein.  So, ever since July 2011, we implemented a family Bible study once a week.  I can’t tell you how much this has helped our family grow and for my kids to freely express themselves and their appreciation for God/spirituality!

I normally don’t write about religion or politics just because of the type of subject.  Today, I wanted to share with you a little bit of my background. The toxic environment I had growing up and how I detoxified and continue to detoxify toward my recovery by keeping my faith.  I’ve been feeling really depressed over the last few days and the self-loathing was starting to corrupt my thinking.  I talked to a friend and he shared with me a Bible verse to encourage me.  When I read it, I cried.  It moved me away from my depressed thinking and reassured me at the same time:

‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I will fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness.’  – (Isaiah 41:10)

It was a FREE COMMUNITY EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM OPEN TO THE PUBLIC for friends, family, health care professionals and those personally diagnosed with any form of mental illness.

I was there last year and had a blast. A local printer printed up my cartoons and I gave them away to my peers. This year the printer could not help out.  I had to print them myself. My end cost was $250.00 — OUCH, but I knew that they would get into to the hands of people who could appreciate them.

Boy did they! My table was so swamped with peers grabbing my cartoons and samples of BP HOPE and Esperanza Magazines that I could not take many pictures.

I added a few things to my table this year… On the right side, I found the very first display the kids and I made in 2008…On the left is my newer folding display with my banner I got printed up. I also had my Share Care Now #4th place ranking printed up and framed.  Also added a donation jar with my new motto: “Donate CENTS to help others find their SENSE of Humor.”

I want to thank the crew at Port Charlotte Staples for printing up the cartoons and cutting them for me (Oh and making a small error and then being willing to print them up again to make sure they had a happy customer).  That is Chato, Jr working on the tablet adding peers’ e-mail addresses to our newsletter…or playing Angry Birds?  Oh, yes and this year on all the cartoons had a label with a QR code on the back of each cartoon.

Caption: Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals!

Should you be worried that your Pharmaceuticals are counterfeit? Are your SSRI’s…”SSR-NOTS”?!  The FDA has seen an increase of medication fakes hitting our shores lately.  While most are not psychotropics or common meds for Bipolar, Depression or Anxiety, it does make one wonder and worry (a cause for real concern.)

A worthy topic for discussion: Do you know, for sure, the pills you swallow are not sugar pills? Or worse…a watered-down, weaker version of much-needed medication?!

“WAIT”– you say, “getting us worried about ‘fake drugs’ is just BIG PHARMA’S way of bullying us into buying their particular product.”  I think there may be some truth to that statement, however, there is legitimate weight to counterfeit pharmaceuticals being out there doing more damage than good.  I don’t agree with what I read that Big Pharma  is categorizing/labeling “safe” generic/cheaper medication as “fake drugs” as a way to corner the market.  What do you consider counterfeit pharmaceuticals? Would it include my cartoon depiction of painted Tic-Tacs looking like medication pills?  After all, that is how I think of the term “counterfeit pharmaceuticals” or “Fake Drugs.”

What are we truly talking about?  This safety topic could fall into the following 3 categories:

• Substandard Pharmaceuticals  “do not meet quality standards specifications for the product as defined under World Health Organization guidelines.”  They may have deconstructed a brand name to make a generic knock-off with some of the ingredients either being off or missing.  Or they may be old, weak, ineffective and dangerous.

• Factitious Pharmaceuticals are identified as “FAKE DRUGS” with product misrepresented in an insidious way to scam the consumer.  This happens by falsified documentations and claims, I.E. Take “Cure-It-Tol” and it will cure all Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

• Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals are outright criminal trademark infringement aimed to defraud Big Pharma.  Producing  generic, but selling as the brand name product.

Do you “really” need to personally worry about Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals? YES and NO. The main issues/concerns are seemingly mostly affecting people outside of America. Here in the States, are the odds in your favor that you may never have to deal with “Fake Drugs” labeled as real drugs?  Sadly, it’s a REAL, major problem in poorer countries! Just because I am not personally affected at the moment, should I be apathetic toward those who are?  OxFam writer, Jennifer Brandt, puts it like this:

Poor-quality, or ‘substandard’, medicines threaten patients and public health in developing countries. Prioritization of medicines regulation by developing-country governments, with the technical and financial support of rich countries, is badly needed. Under the guise of helping to address dangerous and ineffective medicines, rich countries are pushing for new intellectual-property rules and reliance on police – rather than health regulatory – action. This approach will not ensure that medicines consistently meet quality standards. Worse, new intellectual property rules can undermine access to affordable generic medicines and damage public health. Developing countries must improve medicines regulation – not expand intellectual-property enforcement – in order to ensure medicine quality.  – Eye on the ball medicine regulation (pdf)

I’m no mathematician, but the other day I was reading something about mental health statistics and it lead me to a booklet called “Professional Therapy Never Includes Sex.”   Most of the info is cut n’ dry, the dos and don’ts of therapy conduct:

Dear Reader:
As a reader of “Professional Therapy Never Includes Sex,” you may be a California consumer concerned about the conduct of your therapist. You may be a licensed therapist, or training to become a therapist. In any case, it’s good to know more about the high standards of professional conduct expected – and required — in the therapy relationship

Then something caught my eye on page 22.  It gave a percentage Professional Therapists who have had sex with clients.  This is where my math skills were called into question.  The report, from the horse’s mouth, is that an estimated 10% of all Counselors to Psychologists have offended and many, more than once.

A national study revealed that probably fewer than 10 percent of all therapists have had sexual contact with their patients and that 80 percent of the sexually exploiting therapists have exploited more than one patient. If a therapist is sexually exploiting a patient, they have probably done so before and are likely to do so again. http://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/publications/proftherapy.pdf (Page 22)

Then it linked to the Occupational Information included in the Handbook where I found the stats of 2008.  I added up the numbers and came up with a total of Counselors / Therapists / Psychologists in 2008 breaking the carnal rule of having sexual contact with people that are trusting them and seeking help at 10% — or –  167,130 professionals doing the nasty with clients. (Psychological Disorder)

Am I wrong in thinking that 10% is way too many of our poor peers suffering extra at the hands of some “unprofessional” professionals?!

Match stick: So, the Patch is NOT impervious to superstition!

Yes, this year you have three times to fear Friday the 13th, called Friggatriskaidekaphobia and also called/referred to as triskaidekaphobiathat is translated as the fear of the number 13.

What days do you need to be weary of?  Well, this Friday is January 13th then the second week in April is our second “Friday the 13th” and the last 2012 “Friday the 13th” is in July… Watch out for black cats and broken mirrors people!

Triskaidekaphobiathat THIS is a REAL Psychological Disorders phobia that gets made fun of all the time without anyone batting an eye… Why is that?  Why is it okay to make fun of people with phobias like Friggatriskaidekaphobia that affect a great many people? I do not have a fear of Friday the 13th, rather my fear gets made fun of all the time.  What does Chato Stewart fear most? It’s the Fear Of Balloons = Globophobia. Please don’t send me any balloon gift baskets to cheer me up…AGAIN. Thanks Rob for that dozen balloons.  i’m still poppin’ xanax over that gift.

Poor Jack, for years Jill has been hazing him. Pushing him down the hill over and over again until that trauma pushed him too far and he finally snapped! Well, that is how I always envisioned “Jack and Jill,” the classic nursery rhyme’s, ending.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been so busy doing everything it feels like I’ve done nothing!  I do believe that the trauma of living with bipolar, depression, anxiety and a few other things is getting to me, and creating an unbalanced view of life.  Yes, living, surviving, and working towards recovery with a “mental illness” is a traumatic experience. Not only do we suffer repeated trauma, but most of the time there is a silent struggling trauma in our minds.  It’s only when there is an over-flow into others’ reality does it get noticed.

What are a few steps we can take so that we don’t follow Jack’s action? Here are 5 tips that may help you deal with the trauma of brain disorders.

1. SLEEP – Get plenty of it!  Think of it as recharging your body’s emotional batteries.
2. DON’T Self-Medicate – booz’en it up, taking up some  GANJA, WACKY TOBACCKY Marijuana or WASH’en BLOW is NOT going to help you achieve a balanced state of mind!
3. Take a Walk!  Exercise regularly which will reduce stress, anxiety and depression and boost self-esteem!  Just 30 minutes is all it takes.
4. STOP eating JUNK/FAST FOOD!  Try it for 1 week, eliminate it and replace it with a well-balanced meal high in omega-3. (examples: salmon, walnuts, soybeans)
5. DON”T WIG_OUT! Reduce stress with breathing exercises or music or whatever helps you relax as long as it does not conflict with tip number 2.

These are just a few tips, added to my list.  What helps you…so, you don’t SNAP?

Chato: Frosty… What did I tell ya… ain’t the Florida SUN just melting your stress away?!

Title: Frosty the Snowman’s Winter Vacation Disaster

Disasters can be common any time you bring together family, friends and illness.  Just like poor Frosty the Snowman’s attempt to reduce the stress of this time of year, you need to find the right stress reduction tool.

Don’t let the “stress” of having so-called fun, ruin your recovery and push you off  into a psychiatric episode.  An episode where you end up on the six o’clock news; in your skivvies on top of a car roof or large snow pile yelling…”I’m the KING of the WORLD!”…while wielding a decorative samurai sword. (What! LIKE that has never happened to you too?!)

Unlike Frosty, we should go prepared for our family reality encounters. Take your meds.  Plus, make sure you have something extra to help you deal with any moments of overwhelming stress; like when uncle Joe busts out at the dinner table that he does not believe you’re mentally ill,  you’re just lazy! Or when auntie Marie insists that all you need is a good relationship to take care of that depression!  For sure, this time of year can really pull on your recovery.  Don’t let it pull too much. Take charge.

If you feel you’re in a place (physically or mentally) that is triggering negative and/or toxic emotions — LEAVE if you can, change the subject or don’t participate.  Or do what I do and jump up and start singing and dancing around as if I’m in a whole different world. That usually makes others leave and I can have peace and a stress-free moment again, (till the next person comes to talk to me.) What stress reduction tool will you use?!

Here’s a recap of my tips to melt stress away:

Tip 1:

Take Your Meds.

Tip 2:

Prepare AHEAD (pun intended) mentally for Family/Friends interactions i.e. anticipate/rehearse/write down a plan of action to cope with any negative trigger/s.

Tip 3:

LEAVE — as in the room, party, event, conversation…change subject, change whereabouts or don’t participate.

Tip 4:

“Do a little dance, sing a happy tune…It’ll be ALRIGHT!:)

Wine Glass: Depression Glass

Is Depression Glass Really a type of Therapy?

If you know what Depression glass is…then you should get this cartoon joke. Or if you’re like me and had no clue what it is… then getting the above cartoon will take a little learning. Don’t worry, I only learned about Depression glass this week when I found a book at the library titled: “Depression Glass and It’s Many Powers.”

My very first thought, when reading the title, was the above cartoon.  Still, I picked up the book thinking it was some type of “new” therapy or “ancient” healing glass or something like that. Intriguing.

Boy-Oh-boy was I wrong. I had to look it up.  It turns out (this according to Wikipedia):  “Depression glass is clear or colored translucent glassware that was distributed free, or at low cost, in the United States around the time of the Great Depression.”  (That would explain all the glassware set images in the book!) Does the type of glassware really matter? (What’s inside really does.) Depending on what you drink, the glass can affect you; hurt or heal you; uplift or depress you! (Don’t choose the wrong glass, the one filled with poison…figurative or otherwise!)

Now, you should be able to get the gag joke.Whether you think it’s funny or not, will depend on your taste. Hey, all I can do is draw the stuff, people!  You have to do all the laughing. (And if you did indeed laugh or smile…Depression Glass IS Powerful.)

What would YOU do?

You pull into a parking space at your local library… next to a mini van that is empty, but is running.

Obviously the owner is near by, so you don’t think much of it. You go into the Library for about 15 minutes or so and when you come out the mini van is still running. You look into the window and see the keys in the ignition and in the passenger seat is an iPod and the door is not locked. (This is a true story that happened at the Port Charlotte Mid-County regional public library.)

What would you do?

Could the person be walking around?  Did they forget they left the car running?  Is this a police bate car? or worse… Were they abducted??!!

Here in Florida usually when you see a car running, it’s because there is a dog or pet in the car and they are running the AC.  Although, I’ve also seen some mothers leave their kids in the car with the AC on, so they could play their numbers (loto) or buy some beer or cigarettes.  Not the best thing to do…besides, it’s illegal down here to do that!

Still, here I am looking over at this mini van with my children…

 

What should I have done? If you say nothing, then that’s okay, since that is what a few people did. Nothing, not even thinking twice before pulling away in their cars off to the next errand.

I looked around to see if there were any signs of foul play; broken glass, dropped items, blood — NOPE!  So, I opened the car door and turned off the car and went to the library and told the administration.  I handed over the keys and they placed a note on the car’s window.

Was that the end of the story?  Of course not. If it was I would not have anything to blog about!

This is were I wonder if I’m just curious or if it’s part of my bipolar/mental illness symptoms in some way – BUT I NEED TO KNOW WHAT happened next.

Today, I called and talked to the Port Charlotte Mid-County regional public library’s librarian to follow-up to make sure the person was okay.

Here’s what happened: the librarian put the note on the mini van that said the car was left on and that the library had the car keys and to pick them up at the desk.  The car was running on its own for about 20 to 30 minutes before I shut it off at 3:15PM.

At 4:00 the librarian called the police/sheriff out of fear of foul-play and concern for the library patrons’ saftey.  The Sheriff shows up around 4:15PM — if I had not turned the car off and notifed someone of the issue, the car would have been idling for over an hour.  With the keys in it, the chances of it getting stolen would be high.  Also, the chances that this situation could be an abduction are for sure elevated.  The officer ran the plate in an attempt to contact the owner to no avail.  Tension was running high as the officer examined the possible crime scene…

When all of a sudden, a woman with a bewildered expression on her face (from seeing the sheriff and onlookers around her car) walked towards the mini van.

She was the vehicle’s owner. She was in such a rush to get into the library that she forgot to turn off the car or lock the doors.  She was using the internet for about 2 hours unaware of commotion I set in motion when I chose to act and turn off the mini van and notify someone inside.

Did I do the right thing getting involved?  Should I have just left and let the car get stolen, or run out of gas?  If I did leave and later found out that something bad happened to the owner would I be able to accept my error?

What would YOU have done?

I come from a background (growing up in the projects) where you only worried about YOU.  If you spoke up or got involved, you became the outcast, or got beat up.  A person survived by fitting in. Needless to say, I was the outcast and got beat up a lot.  I was taught by my father two important lessons that both help me and hurt me… First – NEVER BACK DOWN and NEVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.

It has taken me 40 years to find a balance with my father’s two rules.  The by-product of his rules is that I am NEVER shy to ACT if I see a person in need of help, even if it means I could get hurt or if it’s not the popular course of action.

It has gotten me into trouble and it has helped others…I like to think of my actions tending to help others.

In fact, this is when I get inspiration for many cartoons, and it also helps me stay focused.  I try to doodle a few times a day.  The worse my day gets, the more I doodle and draw, I.E. ART THERAPY.

This was one of the doodles below.  I was reading over my new book from cartoonist Lenn Redman. You can see by comparing my drawing and Mr. Redman’s that I added my own little twists.

Lenn Redman’s book How To Draw Caricatures (Chato’s rendition)

Below, you can see the page 80 of the book How To Draw Caricatures that inspired my homage to Lenn Redman.

About 2 months ago, I was thrilled to find a caricaturing book at a local thrift shop.  I thought it was a gem.  I’ve been teaching myself how to draw caricatures off and on for a few years now. I’ve drawn them each May for my Cartoon-a-thon for Mental Health Month in 2010 and 2011.  Finding this book in the pile was like finding a needle in a haystack!

I had to censor it a bit with a black marker on a few pages since Mr. Lenn Redman drew a page cartoons charters nude anatomically correct in all their splendor with everything that bounces or hangs.  This was to show body types and whatnot. Still, we have very impressionable children that I know would see this book so I thought it would be to prudish to put underwear on the caricatures that were nude.  Good thing this was not The Joy of Sex book, then I would need to buy more black markers.

In any light, what I had was my first book on how to draw Caricatures.  From reading the forward I also found out that Lenn Redman was a caricaturist at the 1933 Worlds Fair, Cartoonist for Walt Disney Studios, an animator for Fantasia, Porky Pig, Hanna-Barbara  and the  Author of ‘How To Draw Caricatures‘.

This book is a jewel in my repertoire of drawing tools. It has/will continue to help me to improve my artistic skill for the mental health humor cartoons.
