Western Maryland 151 is pulling the Easter Bunny Express this spring of 2013 because Locomotive #2 is undergoing a restoration process.

Winter Project: Repair and Repaint Locomotive #2

Our major project for the Winter this year is to repair and repaint locomotive #2, our 1955 GE 65 ton center cab. The tear down of engine is already in process plus we are working on the inside of the cab. Gauges have been sent out to be certified and the entire instrument panel has already been restored. We are still in the mode of paint chip removal and hope to be painting the cab interior shortly. Look for further updates as we make more progress on our main passenger train motive power.

Locomotive #2 will be painted the same paint scheme but with the passenger coach red and crème instead of bright red and white.

Rules Class For The Railroad

Once again it’s rules class on the M&H. Instructors Charlie High and Andy Ottinger performed most of the training duties. It was especially important this year since the railroad has adopted a new rule book with several changes. This was the first major revision since 1993!

Santa Train Annual Event

The Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad has begun selling tickets for its Santa Trains. Santa visits with gifts for all the children ages 2-11, plus returns after Gift Time for pictures. Bring a camera and save the memories. There’s plenty of time to watch out the window and enjoy the scenery in Swatara Creek Valley and listen to the live Christmas Music.

If your daytime is all filled up, then join Santa in the evening for a ride on the Polar Bear Express. A story about a Polar Bear and Santa will be read, while the children watch for Santa to appear at the North Pole. Enjoy the beautiful Christmas Light Display in Hoffer Park on the way out the line and coming back to the Station, as well as the lights along the tracks on the way to the North Pole.

Santa’s Surprise Trains (1 1/2 hours) (Sat) Nov 24, Dec 8,15, 22 & (Sun) Dec 9, 16, 23 leaving at 11:00 am & 1:30 pm. Santa visits with gifts for the children (infants thru 10 yrs). Bring a camera for pictures with Santa after the gifts are passed out. Reservations Recommended. Empty seats will be sold to walkup passengers. Adult (12 yrs+) Fare:$16.00; Child (2-11 yrs):$9.00; Infants: (under 2 yrs):$2.00 (no seat included).

We’re leaving for the North Pole to find Santa. The Conductor will read a Christmas Story to the children. After we find Santa, he will board the train and give each child a gift. Then, get your camera ready for pictures with Santa. Adult (12 yrs +): $17.00; Child (2-11 yrs): $10.00; Infants $2.00 (does not include a seat). Live Music. BY RESERVATION ONLY.

Moving The 1932 Red Arrow Trolley

This trolley’s wheels were too wide for the standard track and it had been sitting in the yard under a tarp for many years. It has been regauged to fit the regular track and moved into the Engine house for restoration work.

In the video you can see it being moved and hear some of it’s history.

As we wrap up 2010 we wish to say a big thank you to all the customers, workers, and volunteers that helped make this a good year. We were able to have

Trolley rides,
Caboose rides,
Dinner trains,
Holiday trains,
Regular trains, and
a Civil War reenactment.

This year we also:

restored a passenger car,
cleaned up a lot of the yard for our transload project, and
re-gauged the Red Arrow Trolley and put it in the shop for further restoration.

We look forward to an even better year in 2011.
