Up where Emily stands, on stage, with Asher Reynolds and Tori Phillips the heat must be incredible, but while she feigns a relaxed approach, she remains a consummate professional.

While Emily does not possess what I consider a classical style of playing guitar, it remains honest, warm and organic, her guitar and the rising melodies of the accompanying violin more than complimenting Asher Reynolds Keyboard.

Think Tori Amos, only accessible.

When she sings “Billboards,” you can’t help but feel, maybe not what she felt when she wrote the song, but what you yourself would have felt in the same situation.

When Cal Williams Jr. joins her, she focuses exclusively on her vocals and she soars. Cal Williams Jr. is a modern day guitar virtuoso- not clever for the sake of being clever, but a talented artist who knows how, but when to move with emotion. As a duo they are unique, nothing can compare to their sound.

From Russian folk songs, to her own pop folk ballads Emily shows at one humility and mastery- few of are so prolific as to not have had time to consider naming a piece- Emily is one of those few. Next to Jayne- Anne Power, who joined her for a duet, Emily’s humanity , and spirit show that secret thing, the alleged X factor, her humanity; her honesty overcomes synthetic pop melodies; her warm, natural tones make the songs something embraceable and endearing.

If given a chance, you must take the opportunity to see Emily perform. She entertains, delights, and amuses without a trace of pretension or arrogance. Instead of lowering herself to be one with the audience, achieves the same effect by lifting the audience up with her in sympathetic resonance that marks her as a truly great writer, and a musician to watch very closely in the future. Remember the name, you’ll hear a lot more of it.

Starting at fourteen as a singer and songwriter, Emily Davis channels her everyday life and urban experiences into tenderly woven lyrics supported by gentle acoustic sounds. Releasing her debut album, “Moving in slow motion,” (2008) produced by renown Asinger song writer, Monique Brumby, her profile and art has benefited from extensive touring, and playing such festivals as the renown WOMAD and the 2007 Peatsridge festival.

“Moving in Slow motion” was highly anticipated, brining 400 punters to The Governor Hindmarsh. The album has been distributed by MGM distribution. The national response has been fantastic, with airplay on major stations such as Nova, ABC and Oztracks, and startling reviews in media from The Sunday telegraph, Triple J’s Unearthed competition and Rip it Up magazine.

Fronting her three piece band, the Emily Davis Trio, made up of guitar, violin (Tori Phillips), keyboards/percussion (Asher Reynolds) Emily has created a stir in the Australian Music scene, and through her consistent touring is making the break into homes and hearts as a talented and honest artist. This is further reinforced by her determined and long march towards success; having completed her first national tour in 2006 she’s paid her dues and is now beginning to see the first rewards for her efforts.

Citing influences her as Classical Guitar, jazz, and all mixed down with a pop sensibility to a classical form, Emily Davis shows as one of South Australia’s most promising up and coming singer song writers.

I’ve got to say I’m lucky to live in Adelaide. Adelaide is the most vibrant and artistically inclined city in Australia; it’s not for nothing that we are known as “The festival state”.

Unfortunately, for all the acts that make it, ten fade in to obscurity for want of promotion. My sister the Cop, Hekyll, and Fear in Dakota are all examples of this- great potential, rosy futures, but for want of a little more success and encouragement, they folded.

Fliers can only do so much; word of mouth has its limits, and while neither of these are to be dismissed they can be combined, and added to.

This is the purpose of this blog, to promote Adelaide bands and venues.

While in these early stages of development I will make three posts on the bands I choose, the first a biography of the band, who they are and what they’re about, the second about the bands current projects, recordings, links and upcoming shows, and the third, a gig review. Ultimately the intention is to provide links for downloads and purchases.

You can help! Let me know about any acts you’d like to see promoted. Just leave a comment, or e-mail me at btcassidy [at] gmail.com. The survival of bands depends on one simple thing, people getting into their music- if you’ve gotten into someone’s music, share the vibe.
