As a photographer, I’ve shot weddings across the world — from the black sand beaches of Iceland to the turquoise lagoons of the Maldives — but there is something uniquely magical about Estonia in the summertime. After all – it’s my home! The light doesn’t quite set. It lingers. 

You know, some opportunities in life aren’t like returning to your favorite restaurant where you order the same beloved pasta and sip your favorite craft cider. Some experiences are singular, unrepeatable, transformative. Meeting a couple on one side of the world for an adventure in Iceland, and then reuniting with them on the opposite side of the globe in the Maldives—this is that kind of story. Two radically different environments, two adventures, two unforgettable experiences. This is a story about a proposal that became an engagement, and an engagement that became a Maldives wedding.

As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve been privileged to witness love stories unfold in extraordinary places. But Chad and Iman’s journey from the windswept black sand beaches of Iceland to the crystalline turquoise waters of the Maldives stands out as something truly exceptional. It’s a testament to adventurous spirits, to couples who refuse to settle for ordinary, and to the magic that happens when you chase experiences rather than traditions.

Some couples plan weddings around table settings and seating charts. Others, like Jenny and David, plan them around monster trucks and 1,000-year-old ice 10,000 miles away from their home in Australia. The silence at Jökulsárlón hits different. It’s not empty silence; it’s the heavy, ancient quiet of glaciers shifting and icebergs drifting out to sea. Over two days, we went from the serenity of the lagoon to the raw power of the Katla ice caves, proving that the best wedding aisle is the one you have to drive a monster truck to reach.

Alexandra and Ian’s decision to get married in Iceland, just the two of them, was a special kind of treat for an adventure-loving photographer like me. We did not actually know where their vows would happen, not precisely. I had a region in mind, a day, and a rough area pinned in my head, and that is what I shared with them together with a simple note: everything might change. Icelandic weather is extremely unpredictable, especially in my favourite months like September and October. Plan A often becomes Plan B. Sometimes even Plan C.

For their elopement, I chose a mountainside far in the east, about seven hours’ drive from Reykjavik. By then we had already been on the road for a full day, soaking in those very particular Iceland views that never really repeat themselves. I had flown my drone over that area many times before and knew how many waterfalls pour down from the base of the mountain there. Getting close to them is not as easy as it looks on a screen, though. With a drone it is simple. This time we had to get there with our own feet.

Being a photographer undoubtedly brings the unique joy of capturing moments, but when it’s paired with a memorable adventure in the mystical landscapes of Iceland, it elevates the experience into a rewarding testament to the effort and expertise involved. Time, after all, is of the essence in Iceland, and the longer we have to explore its wonders together, the more magical the experience becomes.

This was precisely the case for Chad and Iman. Their Plan A was orchestrated with a touch of clandestine romance: Chad sneaked out into the night to call me from the car. All that happened before our trip to Iceland.

We had a signal prepared for the perfect moment we awaited all day.

The right time seemed elusive, yet I remained hopeful it would present itself. Monitoring the weather forecast, I was convinced the ideal opportunity would coincide with the sunset at Ice Lagoon in Iceland. And indeed, it did. Iman’s “yes” was the beginning of a three-day journey around Iceland, filled with unparalleled beauty and shared moments of joy.

The ideal period to explore the ice caves is during the winter months, from November to March. This is when the temperatures are low enough to ensure the stability and safety of the caves. But, I have been there also in the summer time and in the past few years they have been available during the summer.
