This introductory session is designed for libraries and cultural heritage organizations who are interested in digitizing their collections. Topics covered during the program include:

• Building a digital collection—selection criteria;
• Copyright and intellectual property consideration;
• Metadata standards and best practices;
• Digital imaging standards and best practices;
• Quality control practices;
• Approaches for making your collections available to users;
• How to preserve your digital collections.

This workshop will focus on standards associated with photographs, text, documents.

This session is offered at no charge and is made possible with LSTA funds administered by the Missouri State Library. You must register to attend. Preference will be given to Missouri institutions. In the event of over-registration, MLNC reserves the right to limit the number of attendees from a given institution.

Classical Music in Video

Classical Music in Video is a streaming video collection for the study of classical music. It contains 1,000 hours of classical music performances and masterclasses captured on video—approximately 1,500 performances in all. The collection contains performances of all forms of classical music, including major orchestral performances by leading orchestras, plus chamber music, oratorio, and solo performances, along with masterclasses and interviews with master teachers from around the world.

The videos are cross-searchable with Music Online, letting you search the content in Classical Music in Video together with scores, reference, and audio recordings. The March of Time

A product of Time, Inc., The March of Time first aired in March 1931 as a CBS radio series, in which the news of the day was dramatized using professional actors. In 1935, it was adapted for motion picture production and through its final airing in 1951 was one of the most notable newsreel and television series of the early 20th Century.

A cross between confrontational journalism and docudrama, The March of Time series was provocative, amusing and sometimes outrageous. It was banned inGermany,Italy,Japan and theSoviet Union, and censored widely even in democratic societies.

The 1938 release of “Inside Nazi Germany” was one of the most controversial films ever shown in American theaters. Other cinematically taboo subjects of the day addressed by the series included venereal disease, public health, widespread poverty, religious cults, the death penalty, and the dynamics of race relations inAmerica.

The most unusual feature of the films was the re-creation or staging of events that had taken place, but had not been photographed by newsreel cameras. The producers argued that they had the same right to clarify news events with staged scenes as a re-write man on a newspaper had with words to make sense out of a reporter’s notes. They used professional and amateur actors to impersonate famous people on the screen and then blended the staged scenes with newsreel footage.
