Whether an MMA fan or not, anyone can enjoy a good fight; fighting is something we all grow up with and understand. We at MMA Root have compiled 10 MMA highlight videos everyone should watch. The highlight videos featured in this post were all hand picked to make MMA fans remember why they love this sport so much and make fans out of people who are new to this sport. So let’s get started, shall we?

Knockout

This is arguably the greatest UFC highlight video out there. Combining some of the best and most shocking knockouts in UFC history with superb editing and a song that flows perfectly throughout each and every knockout makes this the perfect highlight video to start this post off with.

Phil Baroni: The New York Badass

Baroni is a legend in this sport for two reasons: character and excitement. Win or lose, Baroni brings a fight to each and every one of his opponents, and does it in style. People love him or hate him, but no one can stop watching him and looking out for his next fight.

Anderson Silva: Grand Theft Title

The Spider is not only considered by most to be the #1 middleweight in the world, but is also considered by many to be the #1 P4P fighter in the world. Silva made a big splash in the American MMA scene when he stepped into the UFC and defeated Chris Leben which earned him a title shot at then champion Rich Franklin, who Silva also beat in dominating fashion. This highlight video takes you through Silva’s late career in Pride and early career in the UFC, and what he went through to become the UFC middleweight champion.

Takanori Gomi: The Fireball Kid

Gomi is a legend not only in Japan, but also in MMA’s lightweight division. Beating a who’s who list of lightweights, Gomi is arguably a top 3 lightweight in the world and this highlight video captures his impressive career in entertaining fashion.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua: Grand Theft Title 2

This is a highlight video of Shogun’s journey through the PRIDE – Final Conflict 2005 tournament in Japan. Grand Theft Title 2: Saitama City, based off of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, puts a unique spin on Shogun’s 2005 quest to becoming the #1 ranked light heavyweight in the world.

3rd Man

This highlight video is unique because it shows you both the winner and the loser, their emotions and their thoughts, and the 3rd man watching it all take place in the ring. The 3rd man is based off of the popular Pride ref cam that recorded footage within the ring and gave you an up close and personal perspective of every fight.

Fedor Emelianenko

The Last Emperor is regarded by many as the greatest MMA fighter to have ever lived. Known by most MMA fans by just his first name, Fedor has developed an MMA record of 28 wins with his only loss coming by a cut from an illegal elbow strike. Fedor has gained a mystical status in the MMA world from his dominance and consistency in MMA’s heavyweight division.

Hurt

It’s hard to make pain look beautiful, and that’s why videos like Hurt are so rare. This highlight video reminds us of the hard work and sacrifice MMA fighters put into their careers to entertain us fans, and how sometimes it hurts them mentally as well as physically in the process.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic

Cro Cop has one of the most legendary careers in MMA history. With 16 out of 23 wins coming by way of knockout, it’s no wonder why Cro Cop is a fan favorite. Cro Cop gained a lot of popularity in this sport through his trademarked left high kick, which has been used to knockout top MMA fighters such as Aleksander Emelianenko and Wanderlei Silva.

Furious Angels

There’s no better way to finish off this post than with this highlight video. Furious Angels captures the highs and lows of MMA better than any other highlight video out there. Exposing you to MMA legends and the emotion they bring with them to each and every fight, it’s no wonder why Furious Angels is a personal favorite of most MMA fans.

This year should be an interesting year in Mixed Martial Arts. The return of Brock Lesnar, the rematch of Machida vs Shogun, and Strikeforce making it’s run at trying to compete with the UFC.

The UFC is currently blessed with three champions that virtually every MMA expert out there considers unbeatable kings of their divisions: BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre, and Anderson Silva.

But saying that a fighter is unbeatable is one thing. It must be put to the test fight after fight in order to remain true. Some voices out there clamor for the dominant champions to retire so their divisions can be interesting again.

I couldn’t disagree more!! There is absolutely nothing in this world that does more to promote your sport like a dominant champion.

How much did Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson hurt boxing by their domination of the sport? Well, actually they didn’t! All they did was make themselves household names and massively increase the popularity of boxing in the process.

The Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, and New England Patriots all took turns dominating football, and the sport has risen to greater popularity than anyone would have imagined.

There’s nothing like living legends to put your sport on the map. New fans have something constant for a point of reference. “Oh so this Georges St Pierre guy is unbeatable at Welterweight, got it.” Long-time fans can spend countless hours speculating about “who’s gonna beat the champ and how are they gonna to do it?”

Almost across the board, the title picture for each and every weight class gives us plenty to talk about.

Let’s begin at Lightweight.

Champion: BJ Penn [MMA record: 15 Wins, 5 Losses, 1 Draw] [* 12 Wins, 1 Loss and 1 Draw as a Lightweight]
Next Title fight: BJ Penn vs Frankie Edgar

Contenders who may be in line for a title shot in the near future:

Frankie Edgar – Good technical striker with adequate ground game. Not the world’s greatest in either area of course, but good enough to hold his own against almost anyone. Frankie probably won’t be looking to take the fight to the ground, so he’ll have to beat Penn at the striking game, a very tall order indeed. My prediction: BJ Penn by third round TKO/KO.

Gray Maynard – Gray reminds me so much of Jon Fitch, and he seems to fit that role at Lightweight. Powerful and strong wrestler with decent striking. Most importantly, he always fights a way to squeeze out a win. And like Fitch, you could add “Unanimous Decision Victory” as a nickname. Maynard has some power in his strikes, but he’s not a very good technical striker.

BJ has more power and better technique at striking. The key to this match up is takedown defense. If Diego Sanchez couldn’t get BJ to the ground, I don’t think Gray will do much better. Even GSP had a hard time taking down BJ Penn.

Even if Gray can get BJ to the ground, he’s outclassed there as well. My prediction: BJ Penn by fourth Round KO/TKO.

Takanori Gomi – Any potential fight between “the Fireball Kid” and “the Prodigy” is contingent on one thing. Gomi has to beat Kenny Florian. I don’t think he can, but if he does then he deserves an immediate title shot. Gomi is still technically the Pride FC champion since no unification bout ever occurred yet .

He’s a very well rounded and very experienced fighter. His greatest strength is in his striking. He has a pretty good ground game but it’s the weakest part of his arsenal. If he can get past Florian, I predict Gomi will lose the same way he lost in their last fight: Submission in the Third Round.

George Sotiropoulos – Here is your dark horse in the running. George just got past the gatekeeper Joe Stevenson. Now we’ll see how he does against the big dogs at Lightweight. The more I look at George Sotiropoulos the more it strikes me that this guy is a lot better than anyone realizes. I’ll feel a lot more convinced of that if he can win a fight against a top 10 Lightweight.

The only way he gets a title-fight is by winning his next two fights, and they’re guaranteed to be against top notch fighters. This will tell us a lot more about how good George really is. If he wins through, my prediction is BJ Penn by Unanimous Decision.

The Lightweight Division is one of the few instances where most of the compelling match ups would be with non-UFC fighters. Truthfully, the most interesting potential matchups remaining for BJ Penn right now are with fighters that are not in the UFC:

Shinya Aoki – Probably the only Lightweight in the world who is probably better than Penn on the ground, Aoki is a brilliant ground fighter. He’s so good at it that his abysmal striking game is seldom ever exposed. Shinya Aoki is the consensus No. 2 Lightweight in the world right now.

The challenge before him is that BJ Penn is almost impossible to get to the ground. If the UFC can make this fight happen, be prepared for Aoki to pull guard all night, but fail to get it to the ground. My prediction: BJ Penn by fourth round KO/TKO

Eddie Alvarez – Eddie Alvarez is the best challenge in the world for BJ Penn right now. He’s is superb on the ground or standing. He’s just an incredibly tough dude. Eddie is probably an even match for BJ standing and trading strikes. He’s not BJ equal on the ground, but has the wrestling and grappling credentials to keep the fight standing. My prediction: BJ by Split Decision.

Mizuto Hirota – Hirota is very similar to Eddie Alvarez. Tough as nails and good in every aspect of MMA. In his 17 fights, he has never been knocked out and had never been submitted until Shinya Aoki just recently did the honors on Dec. 31, 2009. Hirota refused to tap and had his arm broken, proving that he’s very tough but probably a bit foolish. My prediction: BJ by third round submission.

To be perfectly honest, I think BJ Penn defeated the two biggest threats to his title on the planet in his last two fights: Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian. Florian in particular has absolutely dominated at Lightweight. He never loses to anyone outside of a title fight.

The fighters outside the UFC are no better than the UFC’s list of contenders, but they are better than what’s left in the UFC. I think Diego and Florian can beat all three of these non-UFC fighters. Trouble is, they already lost to the champion in convincing fashion, so a rematch will be a long time coming for either of them.

BJ Penn seems unbeatable at Lightweight right now, but for that to remain true, he has to continue to prove it against the best fighters in the world.

Coming off sensational knockouts of Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers last year, Emelianenko is expected to maintain his legacy when he meets Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Fabricio Werdum this summer.
2. Georges St-Pierre
At this stage of his career, the constantly improving UFC welterweight champion is one or two marquee wins away from being considered the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in MMA. After avenging his only two losses in dominating fashion, St-Pierre will likely have his way with British prospect Dan Hardy at UFC 111, which will create possibilities for superfights against fellow UFC torchbearers Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn.

3. B.J. Penn
The UFC lightweight king put on one of the most immaculate performances in MMA history, decimating Diego Sanchez last December to retain his championship. If he defeats Frankie Edgar in April, Penn could return to welterweight to face a top-10 fighter in that division. Ultimately, Penn is aiming for a rematch against St-Pierre.

4. Anderson Silva
“The Spider” will defend his middleweight title against Demian Maia this April. With Maia, Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen all gunning for his crown, Silva will need to maintain his reign of dominance on the 185-pound division to make his case for being the No. 1 fighter in the sport.

5. Lyoto Machida
Prior to facing Mauricio “Shogun” Rua last year, Machida was considered by many to be untouchable at 205 pounds. However, given the controversy coming out of that victory, “The Dragon” will now have to silence his critics when he faces the former Pride Grand Prix champion in a rematch this May.

6. Mauricio Rua
“Shogun” had a storied career in Japan, which contributes to his worthiness in the pound-for-pound debate. With career wins over Chuck Liddell, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Quinton Jackson, among others, Rua was justifiably considered the consensus best light heavyweight in the sport.

7. Quinton Jackson
“Rampage,” who is coming off back-to-back triumphs over Keith Jardine and Wanderlei Silva, has not seen action since last March. Prior to a contentious loss to Forrest Griffin in 2008, Jackson had been on a wrecking spree as he defeated the likes of Dan Henderson, Kevin Randleman and Igor Vovchanchyn. The Wolfslair Academy standout finally gets to settle the score with Rashad Evans this May, although his professional fighting career could be halted if he continues to pursue a career in acting.

8. Dan Henderson
The founder of Team Quest, now on a three-match win streak, brutally knocked out Michael Bisping at UFC 100 last July. Having recently left the UFC for Strikeforce, Henderson faces BJJ wizard Jake Shields for the promotion’s middleweight crown this April on CBS. Henderson could become a major force in both Strikeforce’s middleweight and light heavyweight categories.

9. Jose Aldo
Aldo has devastated recent opponents en route to capturing the WEC featherweight title. The Brazilian will make his pay-per-view debut against Urijah Faber this April. If he emerges victorious, Aldo will move further up the pound-for-pound ladder.

10. Shinya Aoki
Japan’s best fighter will make his North American debut this April on CBS against Strikeforce titleholder Gilbert Melendez. Aoki, who schooled Sengoku king Mizuto Hirota with a hammerlock this past December, has amassed wins over fellow top lightweights including Vitor Ribeiro, Joachim Hansen and Gesias Cavalcante. His clash with Melendez could be one of the year’s most eventful battles.
