If youre anything like me you have been or are still trying to figure out the best ways to reach people on the Internet with your offers. I just wanted to clue you in to what I have learned from my experiences with safelists, also known as optin lists. You have probably seen or read other articles on this subject before already, but maybe my insight might strike a little bit of a different or higher note in your head. Im also going to include a little bit on the safelist submitters too as they are a major player in the safelist game.

The safelist is a great concept and one that catches everyones eye when they first start a program or business on the Net. And why not? We are all looking for an inexpensive way to get our offers out in front of some eyeballs. They actually were pretty decent when they first came about. Ok, so whats the real deal?

The lists you join usually ask for two different email addresses. One is called the contact e-mail address, which is where administration can e-mail you. The second address is known as the list address which is where the mail from other members for their ads will be sent to you as a list member. With your contact address, the administrator will send you updates along with one other little tactic that Im sure you know about if you have tried safelists already, contact solo ads.

For the most part, the list email addresses that people use are ones that are set up in one of 2 ways. The first being a free account where the list mail is delivered to and most mail from time to time without reading anything. Sometimes people set up filters that direct the incoming list mail right into the trash folder. In other words, your mail isnt doing much good, ;0(

Wonderful huh?

The other is what they call a potty e-mail account that automatically dumps all the mail at set intervals which again means, no eyeballs looking at your ad. The funny thing is that most of the potty accounts are offered by the safelist administrators themselves. Now, what does that tell you? Pretty simple answer, they dont care if your basic list messages you send are read or not. They want to sell you solo ads which makes them money and theres actually nothing wrong with that I guess, if you dont mind donating your money. Even contact address email can and many do get dumped. Its definitely better than having your message delivered to the members list addresses though.

The other popular safelist scripts are based on credits. You usually get a few credits for signing up which is to lure you into the list. Then you earn credits for reading other list members emails. Sounds like a winner, right? Hold on a second now. Lets take a closer look at this type of list and what is actually taking place.

First off, for the most part you have to read a TON of email to earn enough credits to send a message. You might read them for a little while but, believe me, it WILL get old fast! Oh but wait. You can purchase extra credits to send more mail if you like. Yup, another way to make money for the list administrator. Hmmm.again, there is nothing really wrong with that but, if your messages are simply going to the list addresses, then odds are they are just getting dumped and NOT read. Even though you now spent money for credits to send a mail with, what did you really accomplish?

Oh theres more, dont stop reading yet.

Most lists offer free memberships which allows a member to mail the list like every 3, 5 or 7 days depending on the lists setup. Some of them only allow free members to send to a specific number of members per mailing. Of course the lists even have a few paid upgrade options and depending on which level you choose corresponds to how many credits you will receive every month to mail with. Generally its one credit equals one mail sent to one list member. Great idea, but again are your messages doing any good? I dont think so. Whos making the money here? You tell me.

But wait, there are a few credit based lists that offer a unique feature that is pretty nice. Its the ability to actually use credits for placing a solo ad to the members contact address. This means that even as a free member you can use this feature, at least in some lists. Now the nice thing about this is that once a person receives the e-mail and open it, there is a timer that runs and you have to stay on the site until it finishes in order to receive the credits. But, you usually get a nice reward for your time and you catch some interesting sites too that just may be of interest to you. I know I have from time to time. The cost in credits for a free member to send one of these is pretty hefty, but I think its definitely worth it for what you receive in return for you time. At least its a solo ad that has the best odds of getting opened plus it doesnt cost anything out of pocket. Now heres the real kicker.

You can sign up with a submitter and have your ad sent to 100s or 1000s of safelists with a few simple clicks of your mouse. This means you can reach all kinds of people, right? Figure it out. Hundreds or even thousands on each list times 100s or 1000s of lists equals 100,000 or more. Yes you can, but once again think about where are your messages are ending up, ( in the trash). What really irritates me is when a list owner offers a submitter, for a monthly fee. Many of them offer potty e-mail accounts too. Isnt that a double edged sword? Basically you are paying for your submitter monthly to send your messages to supposedly reach 1000s upon 1000s of eyes, but they are actually going to the potty accounts that members also pay for monthly, so who is reading any mail?

Nobody, its a catch 22.

That falls right in the lines of what politicians and magicians use, the old smoke and mirrors routine to cover up the truth and whats actually happening. Wouldnt you agree?

Well, hold on a second now. There is a newer type list that has just recently come about known as a viral safelist. So what is so different about this over any other lists? Good question, heres your answer. With this type of list you can sign up free or of course purchase and upgraded account. When you sign up members, they go into the system under you and any members these people sign up go under you too. This is your personal list. Heres where the difference lies. Instead of just having your members and the members that they sign up under you, once a week they do what is called shuffling of the list. What does that mean? Simply that it randomly shuffles all the list members and even if you did or didnt have any members join under you yet, you could end up with a sizable downline to mail to that week. You know, I guess its better than nothing if you can get even one set of eyeballs out of 1000 safelist members you send to reading your mail. Its better than NO eyeballs at all. Go ahead and use the free ones. But, watch out for paying services as for the most part, they make someone else money, NOT you or I. Are you really getting a good value for your dollar?

Building Opt-In List is an essential part of Internet Marketing. Every successful marketer online has a personal list of subscribers and is using it to profit online. Building personal list may sound easy - you just purchase an autoresponder service, create a few messages, place subscription form on your site and drive visitors to your subscription form.

Although these steps are very true and simple, unfortunately building list is not that easy. Someone inexperienced in web promotion will have difficulties in driving traffic necessary for building an opt-in list. Traffic can sometimes be a problem even for a more experienced people.

Getting enough traffic for list building is not the only problem. Many people overlook the importance of keeping constant contact with all members of your list. People tend to be forgetful and if you dont contact them often, they can easily forget that they even subscribed to your list!

Therefore, to solve problem with traffic many people decide to simply buy leads. Buying leads can save a lot of time necessary for list building. They can also avoid the second problem by creating enough pre-written messages to keep up with their leads for a longer time, or they can use broadcast option often. The idea of buying leads is great and many marketers are using this method, but there is a catch.

Many people dont like the idea of their e-mail, or other contact info being sold. And once when they subscribed, there probably was a privacy statement saying that their contact information is safe and will never be rented, sold, or used for any purpose whatsoever. It is possible though that they were lied to, or tricked. Subscription forms without privacy statement have a lot lower conversion rates and very often these subscribers are not very responsive.

Other very important reason why leads shouldnt be bought is because you can never be really sure if you are purchasing a safelist. People willing to profit quickly can easily sell blacklists. They use spam robots to collect as many e-mails as they can online, but instead of sending spam, they decide to earn some money by selling those e-mails. This is even worse because marketer who purchased this list will be accused of spam! Although this probably wont happen since leads are not just e-mail addresses but also names and other contact info, it is possible!

A successful Internet marketer knows a true value of responsive leads and will not sell them. He has worked hard in building his list and creating a certain relationship with all members of that list. It isnt likely that he will risk his reputation and trust by selling a responsive list. It is more likely that you will get a non responsive list of leads.

On the other hand it is possible that these leads are fully aware of selling and that they agree with it. In that case buying leads is ok, but you never really know.

If you are interested in buying leads, always use your due diligence whenever you come across some lead selling offer. Make sure you are buying opt-in leads (double opt-ins are even better) and that all of them are aware of a new list owner. If you are not sure of the latter, approach your new leads carefully and even consider asking them to confirm their subscription again. You can lose some leads this way, but its much better than to risk spam accusations.

The one thing that many people dont understand is that even after you have finally achieved some success as an Internet marketer, you still have to keep up with whats going on out in the bargain world. Things change constantly. Most new programs are gone in the first 2 years of being in business. If youre a part of one of those programs youre going to want to know whats going on. Safelists have overcome the weakness of the earlier system. The purpose of using safelists basically remains the same - members agree to receive information from other members. But this is done more effectively.

The safelists are generally operated from a web site. If you wish to send your message to other members of the safelist you will have to go to the web site and post your message there. This guarantees that someone personally sends the message. The frequency of sending message is regulated so that members do not overload other members.

The safelist management takes proper care to maintain their list of email addresses. Whenever there are incidents like bouncing emails, full in-boxes or spam filters by which emails are not delivered, such email addresses are properly dealt with. All members are registered by double opt-in method. The safelists take particular care to maintain valid email addresses.

Because of three little words: credit based mailings.

For those unfamiliar with safelist chaffer, the basic premise came about some years ago, when spam first became an issue. Safelists, in response to this, developed a simple program that enabled members to safely exchange emails with other members. But, the glaring deficit with the system was that few of the members that sent emails ever bothered to read those they received. Why bother? In fact, most safelists even recommended that each member have a dedicated email address, and went so far as to disallow certain email servers because of their bounce/filtering systems.

But even that may change with the new safelists. That remains to be seen.

Whatever the case, the problem was that few, if any, members ever actually read the emails, making safelist haggle very in-effectual. Most marketers simply made sure their inboxes were emptied out on a regular basis, without even reading the messages.

But all that has changed now.

With credit based mailings offering real time traffic to the participants, safelist wholesale is morphing into one of the few truly effective ways to market.

In fact, while some of these new credit-based safelists have kept one foot in the traditional camp by keeping the regular mailer feature, a few clever entrepreneurs have realized that credit-based mailings are going to replace the traditional form altogether and have done away with standard mailers completely.

The leader of the pack in this move is Traffic Pro List, which started up about a month ago and is already enjoying a fast growing membership base, any safelists most valuable asset. Traffic Pro List is followed closely in the All credit based arena by Tutorial4Newbies, SafelistWorld and SynchronizeURAds, although the last has severely restricted parameters for free accounts, failing to understand the value of these members.

In fact, there seems to be some confusion about what to do with credits for some safelist owners. One or two offer credit based mailings only on a 'for sale' basis, while others give away credits hand-over-fist, so to speak.

Other key attributes to these type of programs are good basic monthly credits, credit bonuses from referrals (which can also be used to populate an internal rotational text and banner ad system), time allowed between mailings and the amount of time one must visit a site in order to earn credits and, lastly commissions on referrals, some of which are considerable and could even produce a side-income worth noticing.

But only Traffic Pro list offers the most generous features in all these areas and even offers tips on how to optimize the whole safelist experience for newer marketers.

So you want to build a list and become a Do it yourself Email Marketing genius. I cannot say that I blame you because the money is truly in the list. Sure you might get some sales and make some money while building your list, but think about this for a minute.

My stats from my newest campaign

First 500 visitors to my site produced 183 subscribers to my list, 18 sales of product #1, 4 sales of product #2, and 1 sale of product #3. Not bad really 23 sales and I more than doubled my money from my advertising expense, but more importantly I have 183 new subscribers getting my automatic messages.

So after the first week of emails, which includes 3 messages, I racked up another 9 sales from just the emails. I had 3 messages sent to them the first week including a welcome message with a download of a free eBook on the subject, an article about the subject with a link to one of my products, and a review on one of my products. They all had over a 25% open rate and over a 10% click rate.

So let us think about this for a minute. I received my first 500 visitors in a 2 week period and got 183 subscribers. If I continue this for 20 weeks I will have a list of 1,830 subscribers. My first weeks sales from my email salute was 9 out of 183 bought. So percentage wise that is 4.9%. If I send this out to my list of 1,830 I would get 90 sales and just to give you an idea I would make well over $3,000.

An autoresponder will allow you to set up your messages ahead of time and when someone subscribed to your list they are automatically send each message when you want it to go. For example, if you were to subscribe to one of my lists you would go into my database at Aweber (the only autoresponder I recommend) and you would automatically receive message #1.

Then, if I have it set up to send message #2 to you 3 days later you will get it 3 days later and so on. I can also go in and send a broadcast message to my entire list at any time, too.

Do it Yourself Email Marketing step #2 - Learn the basics

The next thing you have to do is learn the basics. You can spend $20 - $30 and get a good email distribute eBook to learn from. A few pointers for free would be to only send to your lists 3 times max a week unless you are giving away a free 5 day course for signing up, dont get caught just promoting to your list send them content too, and be personable with your list because you are not a robot and they wont appreciate it.

Do it Yourself Email Marketing step #3 - Learn how to write compelling messages

You will probably have to do a lot of research or spend about $40-$50 to get a strong eBook for message writing. The only thing is it is so important and can make such a difference that you are better off with the best out there. ( I will only recommend Inside the List, it is the best period) One tip on this subject is to watch your spam score (another benefit of Aweber because it is calculated for you). The lower it is the better and if it gets to high your messages will never get read.

So you have three steps to becoming a Do it Yourself Email Marketing genius and you now know where to go to get started. It will cost you some money to get good at Email Marketing, but you can make so much more money from a strong list, then anything else on the internet. The money is truly in the list.
