May, a month of true beauty! Spring goes into full bloom and our fantasies of summer come closer to being reality. Many spend hours in their gardens and yards, tenderly trimming trees and planting delicate flowers. With great care and pride we prepare our homes for a summer full of family and friends. This May, I ask that you give yourself the same purposeful care.

1. If you haven’t had a recent skin check please make an appointment with a dermatologist and get your skin checked! I can’t say this enough, be like Nike® and just go DO IT!

2. Get your eyes checked! Yes, melanoma can also occur in the eyes!
Dr. Sue Devine of Devine Eye Care in Enfield, CT recently told me “Although rare, early detection is critical, the five year survival rate is 80% when caught early but drops to 15% after it has spread” she also told me “dilated eye exams or ultra wide field retinal scans are critical is early detection. In her practice, they offer the newest technology known as The Daytona Plus and the cost of this scan is only $39 and can assist your doctor in detecting problems in the early stages. She also told me although not conclusively proven, many doctors believe that quality sunglasses that block 100% of UVB and UVA rays, help prevent melanoma in the eye.

3. STAY OUT OF THE %@#*!NG TANNING BEDS! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A “BASE TAN” that helps to “KEEPS YOU FROM BURNING” and there is no such thing as a safe tan unless is it one that is sprayed or rubbed on! No matter what the former rocket scientists at your “health club” are telling you, they are and I mean this literally, dead wrong and they are killing you. And if you don’t believe me, you can ask just about any physician or Skin Cancer survivor or ask a child who has lost their parent to Skin Cancer. Each time you enter a tanning bed or booth, you GREATLY increase your chances of developing Skin Cancer and leaving someone behind.

4. Use Sun Protection! Get a good quality SUNSCREEN and then reapply! Get a HAT and SUNGLASSES! Get UPF PROTECTIVE CLOTHING! Get under cover when the sun is at it’s hottest, seek shade or go inside. Be mindful and prideful of your skin, care for it like you do your gardens, your children and your friends and family. Do it not for vanity but for survival. Do it for more beautiful May’s and more beautiful summers.

Skin Cancer is a preventable and prevention is power. Be powerful this summer, be smart and be protected!

May Skin Cancer Awareness Awareness Month -What It Means To Me

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness month and as so many work to bring the importance of sun safety and early detection to the forefront of everyone’s mind, I would like to tell you about one of the reasons it matters to me.

As tanning beds are warming up for their pre-summer rush, I’m going to take a trip down memory lane, to 1994, my friend Jenna and I were preparing to take our first adult road trip, from CT to Boston. At 18, this was scary and exciting, we had never driven into the city! We rented a car, a most fabulously awful, Dodge Shadow from a local repair garage. When we finally arrived in Boston, I remember promising- If we make it out of this city alive, I’ll never EVER drive here again. That is one significant part in my memory from that trip.

My other prominent memory, the one that would ultimately be the risk to our lives, is that we went tanning a week earlier. Because you had to have a tan to be "pretty" and tanning beds were safer than the sun! Or so we thought…

In the tanning salon, I went into the disgusting bed for 5 minutes, my pasty complexion wouldn’t be able to tolerate any more. My friend Jenna, who lacks even more pigment than I, was given the same death sentence. When I emerged from my potentially cancerous 5 minutes, I expected my friend would be out too. But she wasn’t and as the minutes passed, I asked the front desk to check her bed, which was still running. Another few minutes and I started screaming at the woman behind the desk to turn it off. It was nearly 20 minutes and a third degree burn by the time it was over. The following day, when she was blistering, I called the tanning salon to express my horror and they offered us free tanning to make up for the burn! This is where my passion to eliminate these death beds began.

I’m frustrated that in 2016, we continue to use these machines, believing they "aren’t that bad". They are still showcased with “health and fitness” and in some cases, your Health Insurance provider, will actually reimburse you for a gym membership that includes tanning.
Think on that for a minute. Does that make any sense to you?

Jenna is now a Mom to Zack & Grace. Gracie is my Goddaughter and when I think about her growing up and going off to college, I don’t want her to be one of the 59% of college students who has used a tanning bed. I don’t even want them to be an option because frankly, I know all too well about the stupid choices her mother and I made when we were young. For her and for every other beautiful young woman, I want them to grow up into a safer & healthier world than we did.

Please go get your skin checked and use sun protection daily!

Fundamental Skin Care

As a skincare professional, I often hear “I wish I had taken better care of my skin”. Usually, this refers to damage from the sun, resulting in brown spots, wrinkles and sagging skin.

Taking care of one’s skin does not need to be a costly expense or timely ordeal. Be consistent and find products that works for you!

Cleanse Before Bed
Each day our skin is exposed to environmental toxins, dirt and dead cellular debris. Removing the accumulated debris each night, before bed, allows the skin to breathe. Using a cleanser that is gentle should leave the skin feeling clean but not tight. Toners are almost always an unnecessary step and often lead to disruption of the skins’ acid mantle. Disrupting this barrier can cause the skin to produce extra oil, as a way to compensate for dehydrating the skin.

Moisturize
Most of us will need a moisturizer, at least at night. Many studies have shown that anti-aging creams work best at night with your skin natural cell turnover rhythm. Peptides, Glycolic’s and Retinol based creams can help to increase cellular turnover and help to improve the skins appearance.

Sunscreen
Facial sunscreen should be in everyone's daily routine, separate from moisturizer and makeup. . There is no shortage of amazing chemical free sunscreens- that actually feel so good -you will want to use them! Skin cancer and premature aging do not discriminate and can damage every skin color, male or female.

Choose to age well.
