The author of both articles, Louis Jacobson, looked at the least competitive states for each party, and concludes that rather than making up ground, each part has gotten weaker in its weakest states. The absence of Republicans in California and Democrats in Tennessee might be extreme examples, but they’re not outliers. They’re the trend.

What’s particularly disheartening for supporters of Howard Dean’s “50-State Strategy”, which includes me, is Democrats bucked this trend for a while. The gains in red states and districts weren’t huge, apparently not enough to convince the skeptics who took over the DNC after Dean stepped down as national chair, but the abandonment of the strategy coincided with massive losses for the Democrats. Yes, there were other factors, but some factors, like a general political polarization, were already around was Dean was chair. The strategy wasn’t based on any assumption of a favorable trend, but on competing where competing was hard. In other words, a strategy for exactly these circumstances.

Another sad irony is the DNC chairs who succeeded Dean and opted against his strategy for party-building were chosen by President Obama, who won with a strategy that was basically Dean’s. The trend of Democrats losing ground everywhere that’s safely read was actually bucked by the Obama campaign, which did better in red states in 2012 than Kerry did in 2004. The difference was quite small, but it was a small improvement rather than the big losses seen down the ballot.

In Minnesota, though Jacobson included us among states never seriously targeted by Republican presidential campaigns (I’m not sure that’s true, but let’s go with it), I think we know we’re not a safely blue state. We’re a purple state where the state Republicans are dysfunctional. It’s also the case the DFL is one of the stronger state Democratic parties. Maybe it’s feedback where the DFL took advantage of the MNGOP’s screw-ups, and the MNGOP screwed up when the DFL was best able to take advantage. That doesn’t mean it’s a permanent situation. Someone new to the state might see the Democrats holding most congressional seats, both houses of the state legislature, and every statewide elected office, and assume we can lumped in with Massachusetts and Maryland, but we can’t. This situation is new, and it’s going to take a bunch of work to maintain it.

At some point, both parties, if they want to form a stable governing majority, are going to realize that they can’t keep conceding huge areas, including whole states. I don’t know if this trend causes, is caused by, or has a common cause with the trend of both congressmen and state legislators voting more consistently with their parties, but unless something intervenes to change that, each party is going to have to figure out how to compete where it’s now weak. If only one party does this, it will have a huge advantage, if only from a more accurate understanding of the challenge in front of them. Had the 50-State Strategy not been abandoned, that would be us. In my series “Democrats need to do better with white voters”, I used population density as a way to identify districts that should be winnable, but it’s also a way to identify an underlying problem, that we’re losing where population densities are low. If Democrats crack the problem of winning low-density areas, we win a lot more often. If Republicans crack the problem of winning high-density areas, then they win a lot more often. That’s the real race we’re in.

For reference, the series on “Democrats need to do better with white voters”:

Despite the best and worst efforts by the right, President Obama’s approval rating on Monday, according to the Gallop Poll was at 48% Approval / 45% Disapproval.

So how did he fare during the week of faux scandals?

On Saturday’s Gallop Poll, Obama’s Approval rating had JUMPED to 51%, and his Disapproval rating had DECLINED to 42%.

This is pretty much one of the better sets of polling numbers since the January start of his current term.

So, who feels this way, and how is this reflected broken down by party approval ratings?

On Jan. 27th Dems polled a 91% approval with Repubs at 11% approval; on May 12th, Dems approval polled at 84%, with Repubs polling at 15%.

The smart lesson to be learned from this is that like their wedge issues, dirty politics don’t work, and they can backfire badly, producing the exact opposite of intended results. But with the ‘think tanks’ all advising the right to continue with the Turd Theater, and the past history of the right doubling down in repeating their mistakes, I think we know which is the more likely course: make up shit, and then try to smear Obama with it.

And in case you were wondering how much attention the GOP “poop-oop-a-dupe” had garnered, as of the May 16th poll:

This is my Sunday column for the May 19, 2013 edition of the Hibbing Daily Tribune. I'll be revealing more about Tom Page's Dylan sculpture project in a week or so.

Dylan sculpted music, now hometowns etch him in history
By Aaron J. Brown

The figure crouches over a guitar, playing against a hurricane. A long cloak whips behind him, illustrating winds of change or a turbulent sea of lyrics. This is the way Bob Dylan might be recognized in his birthplace of Duluth. News of a major downtown Dylan sculpture project comes as this famous son claimed by Duluth and Hibbing is set to be honored with a week of live events in the two cities.

Northern Minnesota sculptor Tom Page of Cohasset will kick off a project soon raising money to bring his Dylan sculpture to full size in the city where the musician was born in 1941. Duluth began its annual Dylan Fest this weekend while Dylan Days here in Hibbing runs May 23-26.

“I never really had much distance between his music and myself,” said Page, who grew up in a blue collar neighborhood in North Minneapolis when Dylan’s music first made national waves. He followed Dylan’s many musical phases while he pursued a career in visual art.

“I got to thinking that could be a fun project. It was not an epiphany, probably a slow swell of 45 years to put the project where I could pursue it.”

The fact that Dylan was from a small town in northern Minnesota came to inspire Page, along with scores of other artists and musicians around the world. Page’s career includes several major public art sculptures around Minnesota.

“I have high regard for anyone who embraces the arts, from Bob Dylan to a fourth grader with oil paint,” said Page. “Most of us, that creativity is squeezed out of us in time. This project is really about Bob’s fans, the people who appreciate his artistry. It’s more for them to have a place to connect all the things that make Bob’s music, poetry and art so special. I hope this becomes that location.”

Page is organizing a pre-launch party for the sculpture project at 5 p.m. Thursday at Fitger’s in Duluth. He’ll launch a website for the project on May 27, followed by a June 3 Kickstarter page which will raise the $175,000 needed to forge the final product.

But Page doesn’t believe that the project should stop in Duluth, adding that a future art project in Hibbing could be next.

“This is not Dylan worship,” said Page. “It’s a place to bring people to experience their environment, the music and social change and causes and all of the things that Dylan’s music represents. If it becomes that, I’ll have accomplished my mission.

“The fact that Dylan came from Hibbing shows that anyone could have the ability to do what Bob did. That’s the appeal that the people of his time here might miss.”

The Duluth sculpture image will be revealed soon, with a target unveiling of the final project in spring or summer of 2014.

This year, Hibbing and Duluth are working together more closely than ever during the days around Dylan’s May 24 birthday. Dylan Fest in Duluth is already underway, with a Friday concert and last night’s popular “Duluth Does Dylan” show. Additional events run through this week until the highly anticipated Blood on the Tracks Express, an actual North Shore Scenic Railroad trip to Two Harbors and back featuring live music in passenger cars.

Friday brings Hibbing’s Dylan Days, including a poetry workshop at the Memorial Building featuring former Duluth poet laureate Sheila Packa and a reading from winners of the B.J. Rolfzen Memorial Creative Writing Contest. (Call Howard Street Booksellers at 262-5206 to reserve a spot in the free workshop). Friday night brings the world-famous Dylan Days Singer/Songwriter contest at Zimmy’s.

Saturday’s events include the popular bus tour of the Hibbing Dylan would have known when he lived here, a second round of the singer/songwriter contest at Zimmy’s and live music by the Adjustments at Zimmy’s that night. More events and information is available at www.dylandays.org.

Dylan’s appeal across the world makes our planet seem a little smaller, its people more alike than you’d think. It’s good to see towns like Hibbing and Duluth, connected by much more than Dylan, but thousands of years of trails, trade, tracks and taconite, working together as part of the northern Minnesota spirit that set him loose on the that world.

Aaron J.
This is one more example of there is no ‘there’ there for a scandal; it is utterly, completely and hypocritically contrived.

My thanks to facebookers for saving me an image search for GOP presidents back to Nixon with umbrellas held by military and non-military personnel. I’m sure with enough digging, I could find pics of Gerald Ford and Ike having umbrellas held for them, but I think these make the point, that ALL our presidents have had umbrellas held for them, including by military members.

And so, btw, have our presidential and vice presidential wannabees.

It’s time to object to the fake outrage, and the utter and complete absence of facts by the right.

It is also time to object, loudly and effectively to the efforts by the right to use fake scandals as a distraction, and as a tactic, in place of governing.

Over at the Daily Kos, the blogger Wilbur wrote an excellent parody of the Umbrella-gate faux controversy, which you can read HERE.

It is a parody of the faux controversy over Benghazi.

Anatomy of a scandal: Umbrella-gate!

3:55 Obama appears in Rose Garden with Marine holding an umbrella

4:03 Rand Paul says that the president is setting a dangerous precedent by having Marines carry umbrella and wonders if he is abusing posse comitas

4:07 Louie Gohmert says that having Marines carry umbrellas is a sign of tyranny

4:14 Darrell Issa decides to hold hearings on the quickly evolving umbrella gate – says that it is essential Obama let Marine who carried umbrella testify

4:17 White House says it’s fine if Marine testifies

4:23 ssa says Marine is not welcome to testify

What makes this particularly objectionable is that this is not spontaneous fake outrage; it appears to be deliberate ‘fake outrage’, contrived for political purpose, as exemplified by this from the right wing influence peddlers at the Heritage Foundation, chaired by recent senator Jim De Mint.

IRS Investigation - Jail Time?

by Dave Mindeman

Republicans can't seem to say enough about the IRS scandal. It is that perfect conflagration of martyrdom and government persecution. But the more they talk the dumber this gets....

From Gov. Bobby Jindal....

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will use a Saturday speech to Virginia Republicans to suggest the IRS officials who targeted conservative political organizations for scrutiny be sent to prison.

"You cannot take the freedom of law-abiding Americans, whether you disagree with them or not, and keep your own freedom,” Jindal, a Republican, will tell delegates at the Virginia GOP convention, according to remarks shared with POLITICO. “When you do that, you go to jail.”

Really?

First of all, nobody's freedom was taken away. The vast majority of these applications were still granted....they were just delayed. And quite frankly, these applications needed some scrutiny - I would contend that they did not meet 501(c)4 criteria.

On the other hand, I am not saying that there wasn't any wrong doing here...there was. But infringement on freedom? Seriously?

And jail time?

Our government engaged in torture - nobody went to jail. Our government did illegal wiretapping - nobody went to jail. Bankers nearly brought the entire economy of the United States down to rubble - nobody went to jail.

Continue the investigation - but let's have some reality about the scale of the problem.
