“The win is a heavy blow to same-sex marriage supporters not only in North Carolina but across the nation as opposition organizers outspent supporters by two to one, and were heavily organized to get out the vote,” said John Helmberger, Chairman Minnesota for Marriage. “In fact, as late as last week, opposition campaign manager, Jeremy Kennedy was predicting a major upset. Opposition groups unleashed a last minute barrage of misleading ads and former president Bill Clinton did robo-calls to hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians urging them to vote against the amendment.”

“Let there be not doubt, the people of North Carolina have sent a resounding message to the nation, that traditional marriage is profoundly in the common good and should be protected from meddling by activist judges and politicians,” said Helmberger.
“There is a clear and present threat to marriage in Minnesota. In fact, traditional marriage has been under assault in the state Legislature and in the courts for several years. Several bills have been introduced in the Minnesota legislature to redefine marriage. And, gay marriage activists have filed a lawsuit in Hennepin County District Court seeking to overturn Minnesota’s current marriage law.”

“The answer to these threats to marriage is the Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment. The amendment puts the time-tested definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman into our state constitution where it will be safe from activist judges and politicians.”

Minnesota For Marriage Releases New Marriage Minute Video: “Isn’t it wrong for churches to be involved in the campaign?  What about separation of church and state?”

Shrouded in the widely misunderstood concept of separation of church and state, some secular groups want to confine religious viewpoints to the four walls of the church.  This is as un-American as it is unconstitutional.

All churches have a right and a duty to speak out on important issues like the Marriage Protection Amendment no matter their position on the amendment itself.

“As we in Minnesota will do in November, tomorrow North Carolina voters will decide whether to adopt a constitutional amendment preserving marriage as the union of one man and one woman,” said John Helmberger, Chairman of Minnesota for Marriage.  “There is no more accomplished or revered Christian leader in this nation than Billy Graham.  He has personally counseled every American president since Harry Truman.  His worldwide crusades are responsible for the conversion of over three million Christians, and his sermons preaching the Gospel have been seen or heard by over 2.2 billion people around the world.  The Gallup survey consistently listed Dr. Graham as one of America’s most admired citizens, and ranked him as the seventh-most admired American of the 20th Century.”

In his endorsement of the North Carolina marriage amendment, Dr. Graham said, “At 93, I never thought we would have to debate the definition of marriage.  The Bible is clear — God’s definition of marriage is between a man and a woman.  I want to urge my fellow North Carolinians to vote FOR the marriage amendment on Tuesday, May 8th.”  Dr. Graham’s powerful endorsement of traditional marriage is just as applicable here in Minnesota as it is in North Carolina.

“We urge all Minnesotans to consider the recommendation of this beloved and respected leader and get involved with Minnesota for Marriage to support the Marriage Protection Amendment this November,” said Helmberger.

No doubt many gay and lesbian couples profess love for one another but studies of gay relationships show that they are fundamentally different than the marriage relationship.
