It starts off with the first single, "My Rights Versus Yours." I have to be honest, when I first listened to the song a few months ago I was not a fan. The song lacked the powerful hooks and grandiose climaxes that "Twin Cinema" flaunted on pretty much every song. Of course, since then I’ve been able to appreciate the song for it’s absolutely beautiful lyrics, and relentless drive. Carl Newman’s delivery is flawless as he sings "We hang suspended from the heights until it’s safer to walk here." The hook is a bit weak in my opinion("The truth in one free afternoon"), but it really doesn’t distract from this great song. "All the Old Showstoppers" continues the fantastic songwriting from the first track. It really feels like a group effort, especially by the time the bridge rolls around.

One is tempted to say that this album is so superb simply because everyone in it is so talented and the songs are all great, and while that is certainly true the history of rock has shown that great talent hasn’t always resulted in great music. For whatever reason, these guys have managed to assemble talent that meshes marvelously, with each member willing to step aside a bit for the good of the group. The level of musicianship on this album is exceptional and it is truly a delight listening to people who are all so very good at what they do playing such a great set of songs. If I had a complaint with the album it is that Neko Case doesn’t just take over fulltime as lead vocalist. Mind you, Carl Newman, the band’s main songwriter, is a very decent vocalist, but Neko Case is a great vocalist. Though he does every song he sings a service, he rarely stands out; Ms. Case does.

David Guetta - Poplife [2007]

Guetta doesn’t hold back with the hard electro house beats on this latest album. It’s definitely a dance stomper, but I actually miss some of the more `new wave’ synthpop sounding tracks that were on Blaster, like songs in the Depeche Mode styles of "The World is Mine" and "In Love with Myself." There are a couple of nods to retro 80s stuff: an updated electro feeling cover of Public Image Limited’s "This is not a Love Song" with an imitation Lydon vocalist, and the pumpin’ male vocal track "Always", which samples the catchy background of the Tears for Fears classic new wave track "Change".

The disc is heavy on those tracks Guetta specializes in–tracks that sound like alternative rock tracks mixed into dance songs, with hard male vocals. Love is Gone comes in two mixes, the original mix, and the more raucous, bass heavy Rister & Garraud mix, both of which are dance slammers, making it hard to choose.

Iced Earth - The Crucible Of Man (Something Wicked Part II) [2008]

While the 1998 album provided a general overview of the story, Jon Schaffer has been conceptualizing for well over a decade. The saga is being fully brought to life with the release of the back-to-back conceptual albums "Framing Armageddon" and "The Crucible Of Man." While both albums provide answers to mysteries the previous releases would create, the timeliness of the story in today s world is guaranteed to keep people thinking and guessing. Schaffer s ability to convey the central themes and events of the story without always revealing exactly why characters decisions are made and how events come to pass, will keep fans of the saga coming back as future mediums for the "Something Wicked" storyline are revealed.

The Crucible Of Man is the culmination of the storyline. The absolute pinnacle of the American Metal Powerhouse s career, and happily the full-length return of singer Matt Barlow.

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile [1999]

After seeing Nine Inch Nails in New Orleans last Thursday, I’ve decided to toss my hat in and write a review of Trent Reznor’s latest masterpiece.

It all started with "Pretty Hate Machine", a spectacular album, that brought an industrial style of music to the masses. Followed by the much harsher "Broken" and then "The Downward Spiral", which melded the styles of both previous albums into one.

"The Fragile" expands greatly on "The Downward Spiral", fullfilling another piece in NIN’s musical journey. Was it worth the five year wait? Certainly. Does it sound somewhat like it’s predecessor? Yes, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Each Nine Inch Nails record flows into the next. They’re not so much individual albums as they are one cohesive work. Building and extrapolating on each other to give the listener a glimpe into the sometimes tortured psyche of Trent Reznor.

Toshiro Masuda - Naruto: Original Soundtrack [2005]

It’s a bunch of sweet music from this great series. All but the first and last tracks are instrumental. The last track (Wind) is really exceptional, and the main reason I bought the CD. I just wish I could understand what the hell the singer is saying… "don’t dry with fakes or fears" — what on Earth does that mean??? Anyway, some of the instrumentals are relatively short "mood" pieces that do not necessarily make great listening on their own, but there’s at least 6 or 7 really enjoyable instrumentals, IMHO. I wouldn’t spend $50, but I would certainly buy a used copy for $6, which is exactly what I did. And it makes me smile.

Grateful Dead - Live / Dead [LIVE] [1969]

If there had to be only one Grateful Dead CD to run out and get, "Live/Dead" would have to be it. This album tops the list of many Deadheads as the bands best album overall. There’s plenty of reason for it as well. This is the Dead in their prime and at their very best performance-wise and music-wise.
"Live/Dead" opens with the famed 23-minute version of "Dark Star". This is the ultimate Dead-jam track. The band plays off each other like seasoned pros. Jerry Garcia performs one of his greatest guitar leads here and his voice is in ship-shape throughout. This version of "Dark Star" still holds up even today.
After "Dark Star" runs its 23-minutes, it is followed directly by "Saint Stephen". The studio version of this track appears on "Aoxomoxoa" but the live version included here is much more agressive and stronger. This leads into another Dead jamfest entitled "The Eleven". The interplay between all the band members is clearly in evidence here. Bassist Phil Lesh pumps out a chordal bass structure in 11/8 while drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart lock everything into place. Jerry once again flys high on his lead guitar.

The Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia… [2008]

Thankfully the Dresden Dolls haven’t lost any of their Brechtian flavour or wild devilish energy since their second album "Yes Virginia." And though "No Virginia" is not really an album proper — it’s a string of B-sides, odds and ends — it’s a deliciously dark cacophony of piano, psychiatric catastrophes and sharp drums. It’s a bit smoother and less punky than their past work, but still what you’d expect from the Dolls.

Stabs of piano and drums punctuate Amanda Palmer’s singing, as she announces, "Ashley talks to astronauts back home by way of fax transmission… weary, oh so drearily we wave our flags into the camera/Amber goes berserk completely, she’s been here since last December."

The Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia… [2006]

Compared to the self-titled debut, "Yes, Virginia" sounds more vigorous, and the album overall has more of a "rock" feel, yet without losing its theatrical, cabaret backbone. The duo sound sure of themselves and in their element. Palmer is kind of hard to figure out. Sometimes she seems to mock the subjects in her songs (dirty business), sometimes seems to hate them, (backstabber) or shows sympathy (Delilah). Other times it’s hard to know if Palmer is being sarcastic, ironic, or sincere. Sometimes it’s hard to know when she’s wearing the theatrical mask or if she’s being herself. While the album is theatrical in nature, at times Palmer seems to break out of her theatrical persona, such as with the candid and sincere "Delilah" and the beautiful, lush "sing" in which Palmer states "life is no cabaret." This makes "Yes, Virginia," a more three-dimensional album compared to the debut.
