For far too long the people of Palestine have been unlawfully persecuted & massacred by an illegal Israeli regime. Approximately 6500 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli prisons, 300 of which are children and a further 500 detained without charge.
Muslim Students Association Tuks & its Palestinian Solidarity Committee fully support the Free Palestinian Political Prisoners campaign as well as the hunger strike launched on 17 April 2017 by Marwan Barghouti.
The hunger strike, launched under the slogan “Freedom & Dignity” is the largest collective hunger strike, being undertaken by 1580 of the prisoners incarcerated in Israeli jails and highlights numerous key demands of Palestinian prisoners.
We call on all South Africans, specifically South African students, to join in the call for Freedom & Dignity by conducting activities and events to create awareness of the Palestinian plight and in solidarity with the 1580 prisoners undertaking the Freedom & Dignity hunger strike.

Members of the public can participate in the following ways:

1. 24 Hour Fast: Participating in the 24 hour fast on the 2nd-3rd May & 14th-15th May in solidarity with the #PalestinianPoliticalPrisoners (Fasts begin at sunset and end at sunset the next day; approx. 18:00 – 18:00)

2. National Day of Action – 15 May 2017: We encourage members of the public, organisations & activists to conduct their own activities in solidarity with #PalestinianPoliticalPrisoners.

3. Lunch Time Pickets – 15 May 2017: There will be lunch time pickets (12:00 – 14:00) at all 9 provincial legislatures across the country.

The statement issued below is to clarify the understanding of the halted IAW events that were supposed to take place at the University of Pretoria by the MSA Tuks.

The MSA Tuks, has always shown its unwavering support for the IAW Campaign that is annually hosted by MSA Tuks merging with BDS movement and any other interested student society on Campus. The events that were planned for the IAW week by MSA Tuks on the 7th March – 11th March was halted by Facilities Management on Campus due to the inability to guarantee safety and security on the campus. As MSA Tuks we believe that this is merely an excuse to deter us from creating any awareness about Palestine.
