Resource Highlights: JSTOR Institution Finder

If you’re a regular JSTOR user, or if you’re new to the database, the Institution Finder is an easy way to access content available to MSKCC users. Skip to 00:53 in the tutorial above to hear about the Institution Finder feature.

If you haven’t navigated to JSTOR via the Library website using the DATABASES tab, the Institution Finder will allow you to search or browse for Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on a list, which will then direct you to login to the Library website in order to access JSTOR’s full text content available to MSK staff.

Logging in to the Library website first, then finding JSTOR on our list of DATABASES will achieve the same result. The Institution Finder feature just offers an alternate, customized way of doing this, for those who use JSTOR from the get-go.

Mobile patient portals, organ donation on Facebook, what those stats were really saying, open access news and baby sea otters…in the brave new fuzzy world of blog buzz.

Kaiser Permanente rolled out a patient EMR app for Androids (with over 99,000 downloads!!) last week and has now introduced an iOS app, reports MobiHealthNews.

What did the stats behind news reports of infections causing 16% of cancers really mean? A great explanation of population attributable fractions from Ed Yong at Not Exactly Rocket Science.

Dr. Bertalan Meskó over at Science Roll was underwhelmed by the response to the Facebook organ donor drive, but one might wonder if Facebook profiles are the place for any medical or legal information.

The publisher of PLoS One is leaving to work on a new Open Access project, PeerJ, launching in Fall 2012.

And some very cute videos are waiting for you in Joanne Manaster’s review of Otter 501 at Scientific American’s blogs.

Library Submits Winning MSK Green Team Idea!

Librarians Christine Beardsley and Sylvie Larsen recently won the Earth Day “Green Ideas Contest” with their idea to convert the MSKCC shuttles to bio-diesel or hybrid. Congratulations, Christine and Sylvie!

They are part of an eco-conscious team in the Library that attempts to implement environmentally friendly practices wherever possible. If you are an MSKCC Library patron with a suggestion for how we can improve current practices, please let us know!

Celebrating National Nurses Week, May 6-12

Formally recognized as National Nurses Day (May 6th) by the American Nurses Association in 1982, then National Nurses Week in 1990, every year the celebration begins on May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Please join MSKCC in thanking our nurses for their dedication to providing the best quality care to our patients. Some of the events on campus include

Rudin Awards Ceremony and Reception on May 9th in RRL Auditorium from 8am-10am
Guest Speaker Pat Polansky, RN, MS: IOM Report: “The Future of Nursing – Leading Change, Advancing Health” in M107 on May 9th from 1pm-2pm

A cancer bioinformatics series has published its first set of articles.
Weight loss has been shown to reduce inflammation, which affects cancer risk.
Some patients may be able to avoid surgery by adding chemotherapy to radiation therapy.

Resource Highlights: Melanoma Monday

The month of May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month! The American Academy of Dermatology sponsors this awareness program and spreads the word of the importance of early detection and prevention of skin cancers by providing helpful information for both consumer and healthcare professional alike at Melanoma Monday.

Some of the most useful tools in this resource are the body mole map and some steps on performing a self examination for signs of skin cancer. Both of these tools come equipped with sample images of suspicious moles and what to look for when examining your body. You can also test your sun-related knowledge with the “Suntelligence” Survey. This 5-7 minute survey will help you to become aware of your current, past, and future sun exposure. The rules are not as cut and dry as you may think when it comes to staying out of the sun.

You will also notice a link to preventing skin cancer, which points to the American Academy of Dermatology website where there are other resources for preventing melanomas. For instance, the danger of indoor tanning and enjoying the sun in a safe way are among the list. With Melanoma Monday you can also find a free skin cancer screening clinics in your area or find a dermatologist near you. The goal of Melanoma Monday is to raise awareness on the first Monday of every May about early detection of skin cancer and melanomas.

NIH Regional Seminar on Program Funding, June 20-22

Registration is still open for NIH’s final 2012 Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration in Washington D.C. from June 20-22. Thirty-five NIH and HHS staff are on hand to share information and educate attendees about the application and review process, as well as clarify and discuss federal regulations and special areas of concern. Additional networking opportunities are also available to those who attend, a group that includes “a mix of grants administrators, new and early stage investigators, researchers, graduate students, and anyone interested in the grants administration process”. PubMed Limits Page to be Replaced with Filters Sidebar

Within the next two weeks, the Limits page in PubMed will be replaced with a Filters Sidebar which will appear on the left-hand side of the results page. When a filter is selected, it will remain in operation for subsequent searches until it is cleared.

Filter categories include Publication dates, Species, Article types, Languages and more. Once filters are selected, a “Filters activated” message will appear on the results page, above the citations list. If you do not see a filter you are looking, such as Meta-Analysis, on the results page, it means that none of the citations you retrieved were tagged as a Meta-Analysis.

MSKCC’s Dr. Peter Scardino comments on Warren Buffet’s decision to undergo radiation therapy for stage 1 prostate cancer.
Marlo Thomas in an article in the Huffington Post, asked some of the top cancer scientists, including MSKCC’s Dr. Charles Sawyers, what makes them optimistic about the ongoing battle with cancer.
On January 17, 2012, the Systems Biology Discussion Group gathered at the New York Academy of Sciences for the Single-Cell Level Systems Biology symposium. Grégoire Altan-Bonnet from MSKCC described new ways of using flow cytommetry, eg Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS), to characterize signal transduction pathways.
