I spent a day in the fields and warehouses of Stemilt Growers in Wenatchee, Washington, to photograph the process of cherry harvesting, inspection, and packing, for Amazon. After the harvest, the fruits are washed and checked for firmness and then moved through the warehouse for the many-stage packing process. Then, Whole Foods inspectors survey lots of the packed cherries to look for signs or rot or other blemishes and determine whether or not that portion of the harvest is a candidate for purchase.

Very excited to finally be able to share these photos I took last year for Enterprise Community Partners, a national non-profit focused on affordable housing and community development. The organization has invested $92 billion and created 1.1 million homes since 1982. For the organization’s 2025 Social Return on Investment Report, I photographed the Redondo Heights community in Federal Way, Washington, which includes an on-site food pantry and 334 affordable and workforce rental homes for people earning between 50% and 60% of the area median income. We profiled two residents, Anissa, who has lived in her apartment with extended family for about a year, and Dan, who has lived at Redondo Heights for about 10 years. “When I got the key to my apartment, I felt hope,” Anissa said during an interview. Dan, who has previously experienced homelessness, said “Home should wrap around you like a nice, warm, beaver-skin blanket.”

In addition to profiles of the two residents, my goal was to photograph the community around the development while respecting residents’ privacy.

On May Day I went around Seattle for a New York Times story about Starbucks’ recent corporate decisions to move some of its headquarters to Tennessee, close some iconic (and unionized) stores around the Seattle area (including the U District location and the Reserve Roastery), and what that all means for the company’s identity, which until now has been so tied to Seattle. Along the way I stopped by the large annual May Day rally in Seattle’s Cal Anderson park, an annual gathering of area unions in support of workers’ rights, and the original Starbucks store (which, in fact, is a few hundred feet from the actual original location that is now a park). Recent reporting says that the first store, long a major tourist destination, may try to unionize.

This one was a fun challenge without any special access to anything; that’s usually my favorite type of assignment…start with just a very basic story brief and then follow my visual instincts for a day. Thanks to Jen for the call on this one!

Jan Anderson was charged almost $140,000 for healthcare after having an episode of transient global amnesia in April 2025 after a hike in Sedona, Arizona. She kept repeating herself every 15 seconds and her husband took her to a hospital where caregivers thought she might be having a stroke. She was airlifted to Phoenix and doctors could confirm it was most likely not a stroke. Anderson is retired after a career in finance but not old enough for Medicare and had an Affordable Care Act Gold plan. "I thought I was getting the best coverage I could get," she says. But her insurance company, Molina Healthcare, said first that she wasn't a plan member and then that they needed to be notified before she was admitted into a hospital, and sent her bills amounting to almost $140,000. Eventually Molina paid for some of the costs, including the helicopter transport, but they still say she owes about $59,000, which Anderson continues to appeal both with the insurer and with state departments of insurance and members of Congress. Before the World Cup came to town, I had the immense privilege to photograph the competition and community of the futsal league in Seattle’s Judkins Park organized by Les Kick’t for The Seattle Times.

I’ve never been much of a sports fan or sports photographer, but the energy and skill these teams bring to the court is infectious. If, like me, you don’t know what futsal is, it’s a fast-paced variant of soccer played on a hard surface with walls and small goals; maybe a little like indoor soccer played outdoors. A big thanks to Bettina and Colin for the assignment, and to Tyson and everyone there for welcoming me to the tournament.

I’ve visited Seattle’s Shilshole Bay Marina a few times this year to see the sea lions basking on the docks. They stop in the area to feast on salmon on the way down to breeding areas further south. They’re so noisy and clumsy when they move around on land, but so peaceful when they’re asleep.

For Seattle Met magazine, I photographed data centers (and the surrounding infrastructure) with my drone in rural Quincy, Washington, a couple months back. The first data centers in Quincy opened almost 20 years ago, and the facilities now account for the majority of the town’s property tax revenue. I’m always amazed how much these facilities look like motherboards from above…the water tanks look like capacitors, the wire conduits look like traces on a PCB.

I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be one of the featured photographers in the second volume of the wonderful new Townies Mag publication alongside so many other talented photographers.

This is the magazine’s first color issue and it focuses on photographers with a connection to the New England area. The selected photos from my work (a few are above) amount to a sort of retrospective, starting with a photo from Haiti in 2005 and then including work from every couple years of my career including photos from the US, Russia, and China. And it includes work from assignments, personal projects, and just wandering around with a camera….it’s a pretty good selection to show if I wanted to try to explain the long-term visual philosophy behind my work.

Two of my photos have been CHOSEN for inclusion in American Photography 42. It’s always an honor to have work recognized, and this is now my 11th year in American Photography. My work has previously been recognized by the organization in American Photography 41, 39, 38, 37, 36, 35, 34, 33, 32, and 30.  The photos chosen are of Pacific Northwest Ballet company soloist Amanda Morgan during rehearsals of the new production of The Sleeping Beauty for a story for Cascade PBS (self-assigned while I served as photo editor), and of mustang trainer Loriann Warner bringing coffee to her niece sleeping in a horse trailer early in the morning for a story for High Country News assigned by photo editor Bear Guerra.
