Applications are now being accepted for the 2008 CUTA Centennial Scholarship. This is a scholarship for students pursuing a degree in urban planning, transit, environmental studies, engineering and geography who wish to pursue a career in the transit industry.

This a great opportunity for students to win money to put toward their future academic endeavors. The deadline for applications is August 1, 2008 and the application can be found at http://www.cutaactu.ca/en/centennial_scholarship.

Route 9 schedule adjustment

Metrobus Transit going a little more green

To mark its fiftieth anniversary, Metrobus Transit is going a little retro, and a little more green.
The transit agency has painted one of its older buses with the familiar lime-green striping from the mid seventies that is sure to turn a few heads in the weeks to come.

“We wanted to make an impression and get people thinking about the history of transit service within the city,” said General Manager, Judy Powell. “One look at this bus and you’re transported back thirty years.”
The bus was painted with environmentally-friendly DelFleet® Evolution paint donated by PPG Canada Inc. Delfleet® Evolution is PPG's premium paint system for meeting the demanding needs and exacting specifications of OEM commercial vehicle manufacturers and fleet maintenance operations. The product used on the retro Metrobus meets the federal government’s VOC (volatile organic compounds) requirements for refinish systems.

Metrobus gets a new home

St. John’s City Council has approved the purchase of land in the Kelsey Drive area to be used for a new public transit facility at a cost of $3,876,000, funded in part by the sale of the current facility located on Freshwater Road. Later this year, Kelsey Drive will be extended to Goldstone Street; the new Metrobus property will be in this newly-developed area.

Metrobus General Manager, Judy Powell, says the design of the new building will be finalized by the end of this year and expects construction to begin in the spring of 2009. “The decision of Council to purchase this land is indicative of the commitment it has to public transit in our city and its belief that public transit is an important part of the city’s infrastructure,” said Powell.

The new Metrobus facility will be funded by the Public Transit Capital Trust Fund established by the federal government. Metrobus has received $25.5 million from this fund in the past two years. “We commend the federal government for its progressive approach to public transit and for recognizing the important role of transit within Canada’s cities. Our new facility will be a significant step as we prepare for the future growth of transit in the St. John’s region,” said Powell.

Metrobus fares to increase July 1st

Record-high diesel prices have forced Metrobus to increase fares for transit use starting July 1st. Cash fares, 10-ride passes, monthly passes and semester passes will all be affected by the increase. The adult cash fare will increase from $2.00 to $2.25 while an adult monthly pass increases from $63 to $70. Similar increases will also take place for child and senior bus fares.

Metrobus General Manager Judy Powell says the company delayed, for as long as it could, increasing fares, but with the price of diesel being as high as it is, a fare increase was inevitable. “We budgeted our diesel costs at $1.05 per litre and today we’re paying $1.36 and it has been as high as $1.45 in recent weeks,” said Powell.

Schedule adjustments Feb. 11th

On February 11th, some minor schedule adjustments will come into effect affecting routes 2, 3 and 10.

ON WEEKDAYS, THE 2-6 WILL START ONE HOUR EARLIER IN THE AFTERNOON AND THE 2-8 WILL TERMINATE ONE HOUR EARLIER IN THE AFTERNOON.

Tax credit for monthly pass users...

The Canada Revenue Agency has released details of the recently announced tax credit for transit users in Canada. To read the PDF version of the news release, visit http://www.metrobus.com/tax_credit.pdf. A Metrobus customer wishing to make a claim on his or her 2006 return, must retain the monthly and semester passes purchased starting on July 1st, to support the claim. Ten-ride cards are not eligible for the tax credit.
