About Working as the One Book Selection
Terkel’s Working brings the reader up close and personal with the world of work. From blue collar to white collar, from the top to the bottom of the totem pole, Terkel gives voice to the joy, the monotony, and the frustration of work. This is the behind the scenes view of work that we don’t talk about that include the many social and class issues which intrude into the working world. As our country deals with the present recession, we invite the Moraine Valley community to join us in a discussion about the work we do and the ways that our work adds (or takes away) value to our lives.

Working: How Studs Terkel Inspired a Generation of Journalists
Sept. 16, 2009, noon-1 p.m., library lounge, Building L
Thom Clark, president of the Community Media Workshop at Columbia College Chicago, will present a lecture about the life and influence of Chicago icon Studs Terkel. Mr. Clark became a personal friend of Studs Terkel at the end of Terkel’s life.
Ourselves & Our Work: How Our Jobs Make us Who We Are
Oct. 22, 2009, 1-2:15 p.m., library lounge, Building L
How does our work shape us? How do people around us view us based on the type of work that we do? How do our training and education help to shape us? What motivates us to work? Just money? Or, are there other reasons we work? You are invited to join us for this panel discussion.
Panel Members include: Mitch Baker, Maryan Jatczak, Jim Bilder, Krista Appelquist, and Richard Wolf
All events are free and open to the public.

Program Themes
Working covers a wide variety of themes that touch upon content that you may already teach. These include the themes listed here, but we also hope that you will consider innovative ways to adapt this text to your classes.

Work and Identity: How does our work shape us as individuals? How do we view other people based on their work? How do age, race, sexual orientation, and religion cross paths with our identities as workers?
Worker Rights and Treatment: What rights should all workers receive? How do we regulate the underground economy? What pay and working conditions should foreign workers receive?
The Future of Work: How can we expect work to change in the future?
Technology and Work: What role does technology play in work? As technology changes our work, how does it change society?
Organized Labor: What is the future of organized labor? How does organized labor change in a global economy?
Our Economy: How does the economy represent all of our collective work? How does it not represent our collective work? How do economic forces impact our individual work? What is the nature of work in a post-industrial society?
Oral History and Story Telling: What is the purpose of oral history? What stories do we tell about our work?

Award Winning Author Harry Mark Petrakis Podcast

The library was very honored to host award winning author Harry Mark Petrakis in the library. Petrakis, a longtime Chicago resident and prolific novelist, is the author of twenty-one books, including novels, short story collections, memoirs, and collections of essays. He has received some of the highest honors and awards in American fiction, including The Atlantic First Award, and The O’Henry Prize. Two of his books were finalists for The National Book Award for Fiction. His novel, A Dream of Kings, was made into a major motion picture starring Anthony Quinn. In addition, two of his works, Pericles on 31st Street and Song of Songs, were made into films directed by Sam Peckinpah and Peter Bogdanovich respectively. You can listen to his discussion at:

Nearly 100 students and community members joined the audience to listen to Mr. Petrakis.

Recognizing MVCC Authors and Library

On April 15th the library recognized Moraine Valley’s authors during it’s annual authors reception. The library staff was also honored with the 2009 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries. This award was presented by ACRL President Erika Linke and Blackwell Book Service’s Mike Arnold.

The 2009 Moraine Valley Authors who have published or showed artistic works in the last year. Congrats to these individuals who enrich our campus.

Library Department Chair Maria D’Aversa and Dean Sylvia Jenkins accept the ACRL Excellence in Libraries Award from ACRL President Erika Linke and Blackwell Book Service’s Mike Arnold.

The library at the Parkland Community College library sent a very nice arrangement of flowers to congratulate the MVCC library on their award.

Sexual Assault Discussion Available as Podcast

Congratulations to Leslie Warren, Moraine Valley’s Information Literacy Librarian! Leslie won the election for secretary of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Instruction Section, a national group of higher education librarians devoted to advancing “ learning, teaching and research with respect to information literacy in higher education.” The Instruction Section has approximately 4,000 members from all types of academic libraries. The Moraine Valley Library is very proud to have Leslie’s voice representing us and all community colleges within ACRL.
