The Prophets of Islam featuring Sheik Yaser Birjas

The library was happy to host an event organized by the Muslim Student Association. This event was entitled “The Prophets of Islam” and featured Sheik Yaser Birjas, Director of Islamic Education & Outreach at the Prayer Center of Orland Park. The audio of this event is available below:

Food for Fines Nov 2 to Nov 20

In lieu of fines for each overdue item returned between Nov. 2 and Nov. 20, the library will accept a canned or nonperishable food item as payment. (No outdated or junk food, please). Note: This does not apply to reserve, lost or collection items.

Everyone is invited to donate cash or food items to this food drive. All proceeds will go to the Zone 32 Food Pantry in Chicago which provides a 2 day food supply to needy families. Please bring cash or food items to the Circulation desk. For more information, call Barb Rys at 5467.

Charlie Brown Makes a Surprise Victory!

As promised, the 2009 Library Pumpkin Decorating Contest was a battle up to the bitter end. Each year the Moraine Valley Library invites students see who is the most talented gourd decorators. This year, the odds on favorite was the Financial Club, since they obviously possess the resources to buy the most votes. Others thought that the CTL’s creative Michael Jackson tribute pumpkin might come from behind and win.

BUT NO!! From no where, a little pumpkin featuring Charlie Brown pulled a surprise victory. Congratulations to the library’s Technical Services Department on their great win. To all of the pumpkins, better luck next year! Click here to view the Final Standings and Pumpkin Photos.

Free Online Audio Ourselves & Our Work

Last week, the library was happy to host an event as part of our One Book, One College program on Terkel’s working. This event was a panel discussion entitled “Ourselves & Our Work” that featured faculty members exploring the relationship between our work and our identity. RUN! The Pumpkins are Coming!

Pumpkins! Pumpkins! Oh, yes, Pumpkins!
The Moraine Valley Library is pleased to announce the Eighth Annual Library Pumpkin Contest. Faculty, staff, students and student organizations are invited to donate decorated pumpkins. –No carving please– and experience has taught the library that fully painted pumpkins and gourds implode (!) before our contest is finished(!) You have been warned.

Pumpkin drop-off begins Wednesday October 21 at 9:00 am
Voting for best pumpkin begins Thursday October 22 at noon and runs until Tuesday October 27 at 9:00 pm
Vote winning pumpkins will be announced Thursday October 28 at noon

Remember:
There is no entry fee. Contestants (and their decorations) are donated to the contest and can be purchased for $7.00 on a first-come, first-served basis. Votes sell for 25¢ or 5 for $1.00. Pumpkins remain in the library until October 28 at 1:00 pm. All proceeds go to the Moraine Valley Library student scholarship fund.
