March 17, 2010 – Today, an updated version of the online payment giant PayPal’s Apple iPhone app was released. Version 2.0.31 maintains the original features of the nearly 5-star rated iTunes App Store product but adds an innovative, if not slightly odd, feature. Known as “Bump,” the feature takes a cue from the Bump App for iPhone, which allows two iPhone users to easily trade photos and contacts, as well as compare and become Facebook friends. So what use did PayPal find for this technology? Now, two iPhone users can bump to send and receive PayPal payments, via the iPhone. Though it is definitely an interesting feature, is it enough to make iPhone users want to download and use it?

How does the Bump feature work?

The screenshot is pretty self-explanatory. You meet up with someone to whom you want to send money, or vice versa. You open up the app, configure the amount, and bump. That’s all there is to it. The transaction will go through, just like a normal PayPal one would, if it were done via the website.

Is the Bump feature really useful?

The question one might ask is whether this is really of use to anyone. Looking at it from this standpoint, the average joe will probably not get a lot out of this feature. It may come in handy occasionally, but, beyond that, it is pretty much a novelty. There is the possibility that self-employed people, salesman, or other mobile business people could use it to receive payments from customers, but this is dependent upon the customer having an iPhone, a PayPal account, and the PayPal app installed. In most situations, this would not be the case. Either way, it is a neat feature that takes advantage of the Bump technology.

Are there any other reasons to have the PayPal app for iPhone?

While the Bump feature may not be the most useful thing in the world, PayPal account holders will definitely find the app useful. If you’re like me, when you make an online transaction, it’s usually easier and more secure to use your PayPal account, instead of entering your credit card information. For many, not having to pull out the wallet is a very good thing.

Key Features of PayPal Version 2.0.31

Regular eBay buyers and sellers will also find the PayPal app useful, since they can conveniently check their account balances, send money, withdraw money, etc. To this end, the PayPal app has a few very useful features that we’ve already mentioned, as well as a few others, to include:

Well-designed and navigable interface

The ability to request contributions from other PayPal users for group gifts or fundraisers

Request money owed to you by other PayPal users

Verify account balances

Withdraw funds from PayPal

Set reminders for upcoming payments you may need to make

Calculate tips for single and group checks

Calculate individual totals, from split checks when dining out

Recommend the PayPal app to a fellow iPhone users

And, of course, the Bump feature to send and receive payments instantly

PayPal for iPhone Version 2.031 also claims to fix some minor bugs from the previous version. Based on the ratings and number of downloads, it doesn’t seem like the bugs were significant enough to really worry about.

Updates and Security Considerations

If you’re an existing PayPal for iPhone app user, you’ll certainly want to download the update, since that is what responsible computing device users do. For PayPal users who may not have it installed on their iPhones, it is a free download. Whether you are an existing user or a new one, it is very advisable to ensure your iPhone is configured with a PIN and to erase after 10 incorrect attempts. This is because the PayPal app or any other app that saves your account information could potentially be used to try and steal your money, your private data, or whatever other electronic data of value you may have saved in your iPhone.

Where Can I get it?

You can download the app via the PayPal app page on the iTunes Store. Of course, you will need a PayPal account to use, so you’ll want to visit the secure PayPal site to take care of that first.

I was just 3 years old when first Domain Name was registered and that was 25 years ago. Symbolics.com is celebrating 25th anniversary for first domain name ever registered in WWW World. Symbolics was acquired by CEO Aron Meystedt back in 2009 who also owns “domain” investment company XF.com.

If you did not know:

MWD is also 15 years old! Was registered on Nov 14th 1995 so we are going to celebrate our anniversary on Nov 14th 2010! I am 2nd owner of MWD which was acquired back in 2008.

Anyway I love to hear stories about domain names all the time, if you have any please share in comments.

PS: If you would of owned Sex.com today, you would be about $12.000.000+ worth!

March 12, 2010 – Tweetie 2, from atebits, is no newcomer to the iPhone Twitter application club. Since its original release, as Tweetie, it has grown to be one of the most downloaded Twitter clients in the Apple App Store, with a 4 out of 5 star rating. Combining useful features from across the Twitter client apps, its popularity quickly skyrocketed. The intuitively designed interface and feature-packed functionality resulted in it being named as an Apple Design Award Winner, in 2009. What’s so special about it, when compared to the rest of the crowded Twitter client app market? To this end, what are the new features added in the March 11, 2010 update to Tweetie 2?

What was in the previous version? For those who aren’t already familiar with Tweetie 2, here are the basic features that you really care about, in an iPhone Twitter client.

Supports multiple Twitter accounts

Support for URL shortners w/ API key support

New and old style Retweet functionality

Full profile access, with editing capabilities & list management

Support for Twitpic, Twitvid, & other image/video providers

Supports Geotagging, on a per tweet basis

Installable Safari for iPhone Bookmarklet (allows posting tweet of currently viewed page from within the browser and by opening the Tweetie 2 app

Translation of tweets

Supports saving to Instapaper for offline reading later

Supports full landscape mode

Many, many other cool features that you need to Tweet like a professional (Complete list available on the official website)

So what’s new in Version 2.1.1? The new version has a few new features that might help those who were on the fence decide which way to go, with regard to a Twitter iPhone app.

Fully compatible with iPhone OS 3.2

Foursquare functionality supported natively

Added the Vodpod video upload as an available service

Removed Vid.ly video upload as an available service

Post ‘message’ parameter to TwitPic

Vid.ly was removed from available video upload services

Instapaper Mobilizer (Transforms webpages for easy, text-only reading on mobile devices)

<!--

Is Tweetie 2 any better or worse, and, anyway, why would I want to switch from another twitter app?

Just like any application, there are those who love one, hate another, or use two or three. Personally, I used to fall in the third category. Prior to switching to Tweetie 2 full-time, upon its release last fall, I used Tweetie, Echofon, HootSuite, TweetDeck, and a couple of others who have long since been deleted. The features above, as well as the complete list on the atebits’ website, are pretty self-explanatory. As far as the additional features go, the Foursquare functionality will satisfy the Twitterers who like to be the “Mayor of Everywhere”. The added functionality of Vodpod is also a good move, since the popularity of the site is definitely increasing. As with most updates, the unlisted fixes are the most important ones. In this case, it’s probably safe to assume that previous stability issues were addressed in a discreet manner.

In my view, Tweetie 2, even prior to this update, provided the most functionality for my money (at $2.99). In my case, I use a URL shortener, in a web-based and mobile fashion. By adding my API key, which other Twitter apps also do, I am able to maintain my entire history, regardless of where I shortened it. I also use Twitpic and Twitvid rather voraciously. The ability to easily follow/unfollow, pick my method of retweet, and search for users within the Compose Tweet screen are all must-have features for me. I also go landscape a lot for rapid-fire thumb typing. While I’m not a big geo-tagging person (Call me paranoid), I do like the fact that, if I wanted to, I could geo-tag on a per tweet basis. Finally, I really like the fact that a gap is left in between previous refreshes and the current one, which allows you to tap, to include tweets posted prior. No, it will not show the last 500 tweets, but who really has time to go through them all anyway.

Most importantly, though, I find Tweetie 2 to be functional and visually pleasing to view on a regular basis. The same things that some reviewers of the app complain about, such as the lack of highlighted unread tweets, are things that I actually like about Tweetie 2. I don’t need fancy, touch-swipe columns, dark, dramatic backgrounds or Facebook connectivity. I want to tweet and read tweets, plain and simple. That’s why, for me, there has been no other client, since it was released. Hopefully, the developers over at atebits are already working with the iPhone SDK 3.2 beta, so we can count on some cool new features when the iPhone 4G (or whatever cool name Apple decides to give it; Suggestion if anyone’s listening: iPhone X) is released (crosses fingers) in June 2010. Lastly, I’m curious to see if the Apple iPad version of Tweetie 2 will have the same functionality, since I would love to use it for lap-based tweeting over the web-version any day. Well, here’s to hoping the folks over at atebits are working hard to make a great product even better!

iPhone and iPod Touch with soon to come OS 4.0 will have more gestures according to SDK (Software Development Kit) screenshot below. New Gestures are Triple Tap and Long Press which currently are not on OS 3.0+ for iPhone or iPod Touch, so far it is unclear what those gestures can be used for exactly, but will update soon as iPhone app developers report back to community.

But don’t get confused, iPhone and iPod Touch already have Long Press feature which basically allows you to copy and paste things. Long Press in this ‘version’ is more meant for developers who can use it for building Applications non technically speaking.

I am assuming that iPhone 4G will have triple tap and long press gestures included in few Apps which release date is this summer.
