I remember any day I knew I'd have a lesson as special. I'd sit in class until our scheduled time, pretty much bored, just counting the hours until I got to slip out of class to go be creative, learning new patterns and realtionships between the instruments and the mathematics of the music. Afterwards I'd also be eager to go home, practice, and show off what I'd learned to anyone who'd listen.

I recently saw the article about your program at Cave 9. I'm so happy someone has finally done something like this. I wish when I was younger there was somewhere I could have gone like this to not only learn music, but also to spend time with other kids who were as interested in it as I was. Thanks for doing this for Birmingham. I think this could seriously change the futures of alot of the kids in our city.

In the article I noticed it said anyone was welcome, mentioning a subtegenerian coming in. However in looking at more information on Scrollworks, it seems like it's primarily aimed at school children. I've never given up playing around with music. I even taught myself to play guitar and read tabs. However it's been years since I had an instructor I could sit and talk with as I just can't afford private lessons. I was wondering if the Cave 9 lessons are really open to any age. If it were between a child and myself spending time with an instructor, I'd definantly want the child to have that opprotunity. However if any ages are welcomed and there is enough instruction to go around, I'd love to come down and get some suggestions on how to improve or what to work on next. I haven't picked up a violen, viola, or any other bowed instrument since those lessons in the early ninties and if it's possible, I'd like to try again.

So again thank you for taking the time, money, and effort to start a program like this and if there is room for an older guy like myself to come in and get some instruction as well please let me know. Good luck with this program. It's already made me begin thinking of what I could contribute to help in such a way. If there is anything I could do to help with your program, please let me know.

- Matthew Burrell

                       Nick replied:
Matthew - OF COURSE you are welcome. Thanks for the kind words but, much more importantly COME ON DOWN. Bring whatever and live the music that will surround you. See you at the Cave!

Schedule Updates

We will not be teaching at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame on Thursday, June 26 and Tuesday, July 1 due to events scheduled at the Carver Theater.

We will be CLOSED on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5. One of the most dramatic and effective example of this is Venezuela's Sistema for children's orchestras.
[...]
We need to unleash it [creativity] in every aspect of our national lives. Quite the opposite. We are teaching 500 children (really!) at 7 locations, 6 days a week: Hill Elementary, the NorthStar Ministries, the Center for Urban Missions, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, Avondale United Methodist Church, the Church of the Glorious Light of the Apostolic Faith, and Cave9.
Not only does this require Nick and I to work several 14 hour days per week, the logistics and scheduling are daunting. I guess some would say we took on too much, but we are inspired by the children we are touching. And we are learning so much that will help us as we go forward. We also both have a personality flaw that rejects 'can't'.
We have received some lovely instrument donations and are very grateful. Many of the instruments are already in use. The small guitar in the 'designer' case has prompted many children to take a lesson. And the 1/4-sized violin that Mr. Nelson dropped by Cave9 on Friday was almost constantly in tiny hands on Saturday.
Below is a story from Connie English about her banjos that we are so glad to receive:

Make Your Dream Come True!

June 13th, 2008 Connie English

As I child of about 10, I took piano lessons for approximately 3 years. I practiced and did everything that I was supposed to do and fairly well, although it is not what I really wanted to do. Deep inside me was the longing of the ringing of that fabulous FUN instrument…the banjo. After taking piano for several years, I finally talked my parents into letting me stop piano lessons. With the innocence of a child and not realizing all that should have been weighed and reasoned in the request, I made a costly mistake. After being allowed to quit piano, I requested banjo lessons and got a resounding no. If I quit piano lessons, I would quit banjo lessons. So the mistake was, I should have told them from the beginning that I wanted to quit piano because I wanted to play banjo.

Approximately, 12 years later, I ordered a banjo from the Sear’s catalog. And I liked looking at it and thinking about playing it and taking lessons, but I really wasn’t able to afford lessons. I was young, married, and we struggled to make ends meet. The $100 banjo from Sear’s was a splurge. It stayed snug as a bug in it’s black leathery case for approximately 10 more years.

I was working for BellSouth, going to night school, and decided for the summer that I wanted to take banjo lessons. This class was in the “extras” section of the Jefferson State Community College schedule. Glenn Tolbert, of whom I knew absolutely nothing, was teaching it. I signed up. And during the course of that summer, I took twelve lessons and practiced countless hours. I loved the sound of that banjo, my cheap banjo! And I learned about three songs by heart. Glenn told me that he had never had anyone do so well so quick to which I quickly replied, “you have probably never had anyone who has wanted to play for as badly for as long as I have.” I loved it. When I was young, I always dreamed of being the famous banjo player that Wendy Holcombe was. Young and spunky, fingers filled with dancing fire, rhythm, and love for that “twangy” sound.

Well, the Summer and the 12 lessons came to an end. But I still played the three songs that I knew and practiced my runs. As time went by and life took its toll, I played it less and less until it became just a banjo in a black lackluster case in the closet; except that it had been joined by another banjo in a case. It was given to me in pieces although I could tell by looking at it that at one time it had been a “rich” banjo…quite the opposite of my $100 “el cheapo.”

When I moved in December of 2003 after building a new home, I relegated the banjos with their cases to the far corner of the basement. Occasionally I longingly looked at them, but never picked one up to try to tune it, play it, or otherwise make it feel needed and loved.

Approximately June 4th of 2008, there was an article in the Birmingham News. It was about an organization called ScrollWorks. I read the entire article captivated by the story. It was a non-profit organization dedicated to giving children music lessons that otherwise would never be able to afford them. One of the founding “fathers” was a lady named Jeane who had used her savings to help begin this foundation. There are several programs in the nation like this one, but there were critics who cited the Birmingham program as one of the best in the nation. My thoughts went running back to my childhood when I wanted to take banjo lessons and how I felt because I could not take lessons. At the ripe age of 51, I probably will never take any more lessons. Oh, but I still love that sound. I can hear a banjo a mile away and I always seek out the player and get closer for a good listen. Anyway, I decided that I could probably part with the banjos now. I visited the website of this organization and had an email exchange with Jeane.

I finally called Jeane on June 11th and had to leave a message. She called me back but the day just didn’t seem to work for us to get together. She had a lady named Holly contact me. She called and we decided on her calling me back on Friday, June 13th. Lucky Friday 13th! And she did call me between 12:30 and 1:00 just as we agreed upon, but my meetings today got rearranged and I was not at my desk. I called her back, left a message, and she called me back. Holly wasn’t near downtown, but she knew someone who was and had just finished giving some guitar lessons. She would call and give him my phone number and have him call me. Shortly, my phone rang with the name ID of Harrison Miree. Just that name sounds impressive doesn’t it? He was already at the PO and by his description, he was on the 5th Ave side of the Post Office. I gave him directions to come to the 3rd Avenue parking lot underneath the freeway. He told me what he was driving and I told him that I would meet him near my truck (after describing it) in about 10 –15 minutes. He told me that he was in a green Astro van. Normally, I work 7:30 til 4:30 but I had meetings today and got there at 6:10 so I was leaving shortly after 2:30. I walked out the back of our building and greeted the end of what must have been a very nice rainstorm…everything was very wet and water was standing in puddles. It is June in Alabama and we need the rain. I walked toward my truck and saw the green Astro van. There were two young guys in it. The one on the driver’s side got out. He looked to be about 20, dark hair with a blue bandana around it, greenish eyes, light skin, wearing a T-shirt, knee length striped shorts, and flip flops with dark straps and white stripes across them. And was he ever excited about getting these instruments. When he talked, the green eyes danced. He walked with me toward my truck. The other guy got out and was probably a little older than Harry. He was dark skinned, maybe some Greek blood in him, dark hair, dark t-shirt and jeans. He was very quiet. Now young Harry was a talker, he introduced me to Cyrus who teaches guitar lessons, and he kept telling me how much they appreciated the donation of the instruments. I told him what I had told Jeane about one being a cheap Sear’s brand and the other in pieces and needing repair. I told him of the dream that I had as a child and how I hoped that maybe some child’s dream would come true where mine didn’t - even if I never know the child and what is achieved. He assured me that it would indeed make a child’s dream come true. Harry asked, “If you don’t mind, could I get your mailing address?” I wrote it on the back of a card that I had and handed it to him. During the course of this short transaction, he repeatedly told me how much they appreciated it. The green eyes danced. His name may have sounded impressive, but his personality was even more impressive. I watched them pick up the black cases with cobwebs and mildew on them. I suppose that is what happened to my childhood dreams; they got wrapped in cobwebs and mildew. They carried the banjos and my dreams to the green Astro van.

God: please match a special child with the banjos.

Special child: May your dream come true because when yours do, so will mine.

Introducing Connor McLeod

There are those days, when despite whatever else is going on in your life, the universe smiles with you and magic is in the air.

I had just such a day as that on Saturday. The lovely young lady pictured on the left was one my students for the day at Glorious Light. A small church in the Gate City area of Birmingham.

Jeane and I arrived and unloaded all of the instruments from her (almost) visibly bulging Element. Jeane told me that we would be receiving a fairly number of kids as we made the most of the relatively small space in the sanctuary. When the kids arrived via two fully loaded vans, I realized that perhaps Jeane and I should work on our communication about what "fairly large" literally meant. I was surprised and a little intimidated by the number of eager faces that climbed out of the vans into the June sunshine.

Their guardians for the day hustled them into the cool of the sanctuary and I smiled as some seemed to hesitate at the door. I know exactly what they were feeling. I was terribly shy as a child and entering into a strange place, dimly lit from the contrast of the bright sun to cool interior, would have made me very nervous. In short order though everyone was inside and nervously fidgeting about as Jeane divided them into groups by asking which instrument they might like to try.

I was a little surprised (again) at the number of kids who chose me, the tall guy with the bandana on his head, as their teacher for the day. I wondered how I was going to ever manage as I passed out guitars and picks and tried to arrange them on a pew so they would not bang the instruments or themselves together.

Any fears that I might have had about keeping their collective attention were dispelled very quickly. I told them about the guitar and its various parts, punctuated with riffs from Tab Benoit and Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King. Their eyes lit up and their smiles were infectious. They had plenty of questions and a genuine interest in the music I was making. We learned a few notes together and were working on the "Siamese Cat Song" when it was time for David to do a short speech about music.

They listened enthralled and to my surprise, were able to name "A Little Night Music" by it's German name. Just kidding, they named it correctly in English and went on to ask several questions that bespoke a genuine interest in the material being presented. I have to hand it to David, he put on an interesting show and even I learned something.

Still beaming from the kids enjoyment and enthusiasm over their guitar lessons as well as Davids presentation, I had the highlight of my day. Pastor Lee wanted to know if I could teach him a little lead guitar.

Pastor Lee is such a wonderful soul. It doesn't matter that he is blind. When he looks at you, you feel like he is looking right through you. I felt like a kid in the presence of a favorite uncle as I helped Pastor Lee place his fingers on the strings to learn a pentatonic blues scale. The magic moment of the day came a few minutes later when I helped Pastor Lee play a 12 bar shuffle pattern. His kind and careworn face split into a huge grin and you could feel the joy radiating from the man as he realized he was playing in the footsteps of legends.

At that moment I fully realized the power of music and my gift to be able to share it. It was a truly magical high that I want again and again and again. I want kids everywhere to be smile and radiate joy from within as they make music for themselves. I want them to write music and lyrics and express every thought in their souls.

I want to help them and be right there beside them as they learn.

In the Birmingham News again

We appreciate the support of the editor of the Birmingham News:

Without doubt, Goforth harbors lofty ambitions for Scrollworks, the program she co-founded to give free music classes to poor children in and around Birmingham.

"If we can get this to work," Goforth says in her blog, "it will be so powerful that it will change our community, maybe society."
And the punchline is: There is no punchline.

Goforth is serious. She believes giving disadvantaged kids something to care about and to excel at - whether it's the flute, the piano or the violin - can make a huge difference in their lives. And that's not just some self-serving salve she picked up from music teachers.

Research has shown music instruction has huge benefits for children: Music education has been linked to better memories, better academic performance, better graduation rates and even better college entrance exam scores. And yet too often, music is deemed a luxury beyond the reach of poor schools and the poor children in them.

We're in the paper!

Hannah Wolfson has written a wonderful front page article about Scrollworks in today's Birmingham News. And there's an audio/slide show from Bernard Troncale.

Thank you! And thanks to all those kind folks quoted in the article.
And we thank every single one of you who have supported us as we've embarked on this crazy adventure.

This weekend at Cave9 just added fuel to our fires. It was quieter than usual. Birmingham schools have just gotten out and the children are still enjoying their freedom. We're guessing we'll be swamped next weekend when the rebound summer boredom sets in.

Friday, Cyrus came for the first time to teach guitar. I had never met him, so when he walked in with a large instrument case, my first thought was, "He's out of our league!" Indeed, he's a very talented and, as Nick says, 'cerebral' guitar player. He spent a lot of time with Jarrod, a regular. Once again I smiled inwardly, watching Cyrus' eyes as he 'got' it. He later went upstairs for a piano lesson with Lauren to help with the piano proficiency class he will take next semester.

A gentleman hesitated in the doorway. He peeked in. I asked if we could help him. He said, "You really give free lessons? On piano? To anyone? Really?" I sent him up the stairs to Lauren. When Patrick left, Lauren came down very excited. She said he was amazing. He had a keyboard and had taught himself a little, but had read extensively about music theory. But he'd never been able to even dream of affording lessons. She said he learned weeks of music in an hour. It's like discovering Mozart. What's truly amazing is that we are finding people like Patrick several times each week--people with a passion and talent for music, but no access or opportunity.

Saturday afternoon, Charles and LeCharles improvised with Nick downstairs and made plans for creating a 5-piece combo to play at our benefit at Java & Jams on July 24. Upstairs, Lauren was rehearsing for a performance later in the day at Nomad Supply . As she sang one of her own songs, I noticed the twins quietly picking up her melody on their sax and trumpet. I shooed them up there. We were soon treated to Lauren singing and playing, with the twins providing the glow of brass accompaniment. Nick couldn't resist and joined them on bass guitar. And one of the regular piano students happened along and also joined in. Is that not the most wonderful thing? Music drawing people in and connecting them almost randomly. I am so excited to be able to make opportunities like this happen.

Dreilion is a most interesting child. I wrote about our initial encounter--when he bounced around Cave9 and opened instrument cases faster than I could monitor. It was like riding herd on an octopus. When I finally was totally exasperated, he gave me a hug, called me 'mom' and shot out the door. Molly has been patiently working with him on the cello. She gave him a sheet of staff paper and told him if he brought it back, he could have a Scrollworks notebook. We both thought its return was unlikely. But the next week, he proudly presented her with the creased, grimy and slightly damp piece of paper. He got his notebook. We thought we'd never see that come back. Dreilion is seven, after all. But he has walked in the door now three days in a row hugging that notebook. And he is really making an effort on the cello. This is excellent because all the teachers agree he's a natural. Harry sets him going on the drums and tries to disrupt his beat--and cannot. And while he's never sat long with the guitar and piano, the glimmer of talent shines through. This child is just one reason why we HAVE to do this. If we can offer him music, we know we will significantly change the path of his life.

Think Always of the Children

From Three Cups of Tea:

Mortenson stood up, trying to imagine what Haji Ali would say at such a moment, at such a black time in history, when all that you cherished was as breakable as an egg. His words came drifting back with an hallucinogenic clarity.

"Listen to the wind."

So, straining for what he might otherwise miss, Mortenson did. He heard it whistling down the Braldu Gorge, carrying rumors of snow and the season's death. But in the breeze whipping across this fragile shelf where humans survived, somehow, in the high Himalaya, he also heard the musical trill of children's voices, at play in the courtyard of Korphe's school. Here was his last lesson, Mortenson realized, stabbing at the hot tears with his fingertips. "Think of them," he thought, "Think always of them."

The Central Asia Institute

This wonderful book is on a reading list provided by Jaime Austria of El Sistema-NYC.

Southside Saturday Serenade

Twins Charles and LeCharles dropped by Cave9 after their Saturday jazz classes at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. They take piano and guitar from us there during the week and wanted yet more music. Harry was the designated winds teacher at the moment. After hearing them play a few bars, he told them he couldn't add to their skills on the sax and trumpet. Instead, they agreed to work on music theory. So Southside was treated to a open air jazz trio.

Harry discovered that the twins are just finishing their junior year and hope to attend Berklee College of Music. Harry has attended the summer program there and was offered a full scholarship. He is eager to give them all assistance in achieving their dream.

We are discovering so many young people who are deeply passionate about music. They are so eager for every opportunity to develop their talents. We'll do our best to provide those outlets.
