I have recently set up a new Drupal site, a private project for my family. In the process of doing this, I had to run the Database update when I moved to my live server. Imagine my surprise when the update wouldn't finish!

Even though we generally recommend customers do not purchase Flash websites, sometimes it is the best solution. Here we have 3 suggestions to make your Flash website as user-friendly as possible.

As I mentioned in my post 5 Reasons to Think Twice Before You Buy a Flash Website, there are many drawbacks of building your Web presence in Flash. However, if you understand the implications of a Flash website, and still think it’s the right solution for you, please be kind to your visitors, and keep these simple rules in mind:

5 Reasons to Think Twice Before Buying A Flash Website

Flash is a very popular platform for developing Websites. This article looks at some reasons why you may want to reconsider it for your website.

                    Flash websites, SEO, accessibility, usability

Adobe Flash - commonly referred to as simply Flash - is a common platform designed to deliver rich Internet content through the browser. "Rich content" are things beyond basic text - animations, video, music, simple applications and games, and so on. The nature of Flash also lends itself to easily creating complex, interesting and "cool" Websites.

Unfortunately, that cool website might have serious implications if it's your face to the world on the Internet. This article discusses 5 major reasons to consider alternatives to Flash.

ImageUploader

I’ve recently released a small Image Uploader class for PHP. You can download it from PHPClasses. The class is very simple, and only does one thing – as all good classes do. It processes images uploaded via a web Form, resizes and saves them. It can handle JPG, GIF & PNG files, and saves all files in JPG format.

Directory Submissions and Buying Links

It can be tempting to pay for listings on directories, but you should be cautious about where and how you spend your money.

SEO, link building for small business, link directories.

As mentioned in my last post, a big part of SEO for all websites is link building. If you’re doing that work yourself, you’ll probably stumble upon some link directories.

This morning, I saw a good post on Directory Submission Red Flags by Matt McGee over at Small Business SEM. Give this a good read, and keep his tips in mind when looking for a directory.

SEO for Small Businesses

A discussion of SEO tactics for small business owners looking to improve their rankings.

SEO, Search engine optimisation, small business SEO

Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing process, and should be considered to be a part of your overall marketing effort. In fact, it's marketing directed at a very specific market - the search engines and their algorithms that scour the Internet for information to return to people for a search. By building your site in such a way that the search engines can easily read your content and figure out what you do, you increase the number of eyes that can find your website exponentially. With a well thought out and directed plan, you will bring more potential customers to your website.

Now on Drupal

MAB Web Intelligence's website is now running on Drupal version 6, a popular Open source Content Management system.

                    Drupal

Well, we've finally made the switch over to Drupal. I've been talking about it for about 6 months, because it seems odd that I recommend Drupal to pretty much anybody I talk to about getting a website, and I was using a roll your own, pseudo CMS that I put together last summer. Making changes to it was a drag, and it didn't have all the best features of a CMS. About all it had going for it was the ability to change the content without messing around with the code. But, with the release of Drupal 6.3, and (possibly more importantly) the Views and CCK modules for Drupal 6, I decided the time had come to upgrade.

If you are a small business owner, at one point or another, odds are, you've considered getting a website. If you have, and if you've been blown away by the number of options available to you, then you need to read this. We're going to go over the 3 major "types" of websites that we would typically recommend for a small business, and talk about when you would consider each kind. After reading this, we hope that you will be better prepared when you go shopping to get - or upgrade - your Website.
