Careful thought is important in naming or giving a title to a painting. It gives a special touch and feeling to the viewer. It sometimes acts as a bridge between the viewer and the painting.

What comes first – the egg or the chicken? Well it usually depends. Some artists figure out a name before painting, especially poster art or whimsical art. Most of us paint first and give a title later when the painting is completed. Sometimes a title pops up in the middle of the work. No matter what, the right title gives a good understanding and it makes a difference, because the title is part of the art.

Title for a painting can be sentimental, factual, abstract or mysterious. It sometimes shows feelings (happy, sad, love or hatred).

Artists set up a series of title possibilities. With titles artists translate what should be seen or understood in their paintings.

Giving title to an abstract art can be challenging. The formal values of the artwork itself may be mentioned, especially in the colour choice, whether warm colour or cool colour is being used. Imagination is very much important in doing so. Brief, short and yet mysterious.

However, whatever the title may be, an art is a valuable thing, which deserves appreciation. “A picture shows a thousand words”. As an artist myself I truly believe that a right title gives the right thought, thus I will try my best in doing so. Happy viewing some of my art pieces.

Let’s Make A Brighter Tomorrow. – by Maba

The world has been getting warmer since the end of the last Glacial Period about 15,500 years ago. The warming and cooling have been part of the Earth’s natural cycle. Of late, man has been seen responsible in contributing to an imbalance in the natural cycle by increasing the rate or warming. Within our lifespan we can clearly notice that changes to global climates have taken place at a pace unimaginable.

Freak storms and hurricanes and melting polar ice are some of nature’s ways in responding to the imbalance. Deforestation, pollution, and depletion and extinction of species, to name a few, have been going on extensively since the Industrial Age.

The painting portrays some of the undesirable situations where man may have helped to contribute. However, hope for a better world is sure to come when man has come to term with his mistakes and begins to make amends.---

From watercolours, she moved on to acrylics to paint her favourite subject: Nature. Maba loves greenery and her verdant gardent is a testament to that, made lively by her sugar gliders and birds. In the interiors of her house, her paintings adorn the walls, and it is apparent she has tried her hand in a variety of approaches to the subject; there are landscapes, underwater and tropical rainforest scenes, flowers and plants, animals, still life... Maba has a love for painting details that she admits makes it difficult for her to paint plein air. One highlight at her works is a series on Malaysian wildlife that is both educational and narrative, the completing of this series meant Maba had visit the zoo for research purposes, yet she couldn't be happier doing so, in order to promote her adoration for flora and fauna.

Books, internet tutorials, observing others and constant practice sums up Maba's art education, this self-taught artist did not receive any formal training and her passion for painting was her major motivator. As a full-time mother and homemaker, Maba paints during her free time in her studio on the upper level of her house, which was specifically renovated to accommodate her love for painting. Her family are very supportive of her efforts (her husband and brother are both painters as well) and even help out when they can.

Maba is at her happiest when painting, she feels relaxed as her problems begin to fade with each stroke of the brush. Going with the flow is Maba's preferred way of living, and so far that mantra has worked well for her. While painting as a hobby, she also accepted commissions from organisations such as Agro Bank.

The World Wide Web plays an important role in Maba's art; she is active on the internet and discovered many friends with similar interests online. In fact it was through the encouragement of some international web-pals that she started up her own gallery.

Maba is actually a pseudonym of both her and her husband's name; her given name is Mas. Maba intends to explore t-shirt design next in an entrepreneurial capacity; artistically she wants to try her hand at portraiture. We look forward to her development as an artist.

An evening with Maba Jaafar

Last Sunday, I finally got a chance to meet Maba Jaafar in person. Went to her home-studio-gallery is just awesome! I’m supposed to meet Shiczo Lee & Pn Seri Inaliza but due to Pn Seri’s mom is unwell we decided to reschedule this gathering to next time. I met them both during my Umrah trip last year and we plan to go again together next year, Insya-Allah. Looking forward to new date ya! Then, off to Bangsar to get some baskets from Mommy and off to SS15. The weather was ok but as I’m approaching Bangsar, rain pours heavily and I’m all wet by that time I got back in Envy with all my baskets too! *sigh* But it was good rain, I must say. Alhamdulillah.

Journey to SS15 was really uncomfortable. Almost hit few cars due to break not working cuz the ‘flooded’ road but Alhamdulillah, I reached Maba’s home-studio-gallery in one piece, sound and vertical! *tee hee* Too many to share here, it’s better if you go yourself to her place (well, I don’t mind accompanying you tho!). She’s a very warm person, rasa macam da kenal lama. Very nice home and her studio is just awesome! I like it very much! Now, I feel like transferring my 3rd room to studio too but not sure how. Will give a serious thought about it soon! And oh yes, very loving & supportive husband she got next to her *lucky her*

She served some finger food (you don’t have to you know) and I, of course, being me – wallops quit a lot while chit chatting. Hehhehee… Teruk betul perangai! And her pieces, awed me! I can’t stop admiring her latest piece, the cat & butterfly artwork. If I’m not mistaken, it’s gonna feature in one of the magazine. *kudos Maba* I wish I have the camera with me but left it downstairs in the living room but hey! I’m gonna go again with Horlick soon, Insya-Allah. Definitely after all her souvenirs is ready. So, if I don’t get a ny of her artwork… I still won’t go home empty handed cuz I will definitely get her bookmarks or mugs or shirt for myself *insya-Allah*

So, Maba… Nice knowing and finally meet you in person. I had so much fun that day. I’m still amaze with the fact that you’re a self-taught artist, who just discover your ability & talent to paint 5 years ago can come out with all this marvelous artworks!!!! *salute Maba* And yes my next visit, I’m gonna bring my friend (who are just as impress & amaze as me with your years of experience and your artwork) and I want to spend some time in your Funville & Sugar Gliders. And no need to serve anything cuz we’re heading to that mamak that I’ve mentioned to you for the indomee goreng & their ice cream cake *Insya-Allah & soon ok?!

An Egret Invasion

The Malaysian mangroves are melancholic most of the time with occasional sound from the local residents such as the kingfishers, night herons and of course the ubiquitous cicadas. September and October greet the coming of egrets. Escaping from the cold north, they arrive in great numbers to roost, feed and nest for the rest of winter. Although we may consider these birds as visitors, but they have every right to be here as they are the true global resident, migrating to and fro from Siberia down to Peninsula Malaysia without fail since time immemorial.

The scene is preserved in this painting to remind us of the precious heritage (the mangroves and the inhabitants) that we may have overlooked and often sacrificed in the name of progress.

Keep Me Wild by Maba

The Bornean Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi), or known as Harimau Dahan in Malay, has a stocky build, weighing about 25 kg (55 pounds), is the largest predator in Borneo. The majority of its prey lives in trees, necessitating its excellent climbing skills. With short, flexible legs, large paws, and keen claws, this big cat is very sure-footed. It is also found on Sumatra and the Batu Islands in the Malay Archipelago.

Because the Bornean Clouded Leopard's habits make it difficult to study, exact figures of its population do not exist. However, recent studies estimate the population to be between 5,000 and 11,000 great cats left on Borneo, and 3,000 to 7,000 on Sumatra. In Malaysia, hunting of the Clouded Leopard is prohibited.

However, encroachment upon and complete destruction of the Bornean Clouded Leopards' natural habitat, primarily by logging and the creation of rubber and palm oil plantations, continues to threaten the whole fauna of Borneo.

“Keep Me Wild” is a symbolic representation of the artist’s emotional state. Just like the Clouded Leopard, it simply wants to be wild and free. This is also an appeal to all of us, to be aware and sensitive of our precious heritage, the rainforests and their inhabitants, and to help to conserve them.

Malayan Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus)
The smallest among the bear family, the Malayan Sun Bears measure from 100 to 150 centimetres and weigh between 27 and 65 kilograms with the males being slightly larger. Sun bears have short, sleek black fur with a golden or white coloured crescent shape on their chests and the same lighter colour around their muzzles and eyes.
These wonderful creatures prefer lowland tropical rain forests and are quite arboreal and are believed to sleep in trees. They are found in south-east Asia, Bangladesh, India, and southern China.

Habitat loss in the bear's range is of major concern. As the tropical rainforest homes are being destroyed at an alarming rate the sun bears may be declining faster than any other bears and will probably disappear from some areas. Other concerns include the pet trade, poaching for food and fur, and the Asian medicinal trade.

“Keep Me Wild 2” This is the second artwork in the “Keep Me Wild” series by Maba. As the name implies, the painter is also referring the theme to her inner self. Wild, as in free to roam the planet!

I begin with my deepest gratitude to the One and Only for blessing me with a little knowledge in art, painting in particular. This has been a precious gift by the Greatest Artist of all, the Creator.

Before I got seriously involved in painting I was simply an ordinary art admirer. I was one of the many people who bought artwork just to fill up the empty spaces on the wall. Gradually, I became more selective in my choice. I tend to be more fascinated to those that are “connected” to me. This craze had prompted me to explore art not just by procuring but by involving. I started painting as a hobby. I’d feel satisfied just to see my work on the wall or to share the displays with friends and family members. Since I have stopped being an employee, I have more time to seriously devote in my new found obsession. I wouldn’t have come this far if not for the encouragement and support from those dearest to me.

Many have contributed.

I would like to express my unending thanks to my dear husband for all his full support and time. I’m also thankful to my dearest children, Aan, Azie, Iz and Chaah (nicknames) for their patience and help. They are my photographers, part-time web operators, friends, critics and mentors. As for replenishment and resources, my hubby is always there to lend a hand.

In their free time, they’d help me do the countless house chores, as I am also a fulltime housewife. They are my beacons in the storm, guiding me and keeping me on track, no matter how unpleasant the situation may be, at times. My stubbornness, hard work and energy spent have been so worthwhile. Love you all.

Not to forget our ever willing web-developer-cum-webmaster, Redza (a dear friend), for his tremendous effort, time and patience in meeting my requests and temperament. I appreciate that, bro’.

I owe a great deal to the biggest community and library on the planet, the “Internet”, for its vast knowledge and information.

Also on my list are my supportive kin and pals: my beloved mother; my youngest brother, Ucu (nickname), for his invaluable contributions; and the rest of the family; my friends and friends among friends of my children; and last but none the least, my valued art appreciators.

Exhibition

My family and I invited some close friends to our house, on 11th March 2006, to share some of the paintings and artworks.

We exhibited the paintings all around in the living hall of the house. We also made some souvenir, such as decorative keychains for schoolbags, wooden keychains that were also hand-made by me with helped from my husband and some hand-painted wooden combs and mirrors.

One of my sons, Aan was the one who painted the combs and mirrors with theme of "Safari". Examples, he has given names like tiger stripes, bird's feathers and so on.

I also painted some life forms on pebbles. Besides displaying them as decoration, those pebbles can also be used as "paper weight". I managed to sell all 8 pieces. I also named them as Red Panda, Sleeping deer, Mouse, Badger, Pangolin, Sleeping lion, Tiger and Tiger Head. Unfortunately i could not show them here, because we have forgotten to take pictures of them.

We managed to sell 5 pieces of the artworks, during the so called exhibition.

1. Serenity (painted by my husband) was bought by Cik Mimie.
1. Pitcher Plant (painted by my husband also) was bought by Encik Jefry
3. A glass bowl of apples, (painted by me) was bought by Puan Inner
4. Poppy field in the morning sky was bought by Puan Zarina
5. Bunga Kuning was bought by Encik Hatta

Few days after the private "exhibition", another 2 pieces were bought by Puan Jenny Chuah(our friend) who was absent on the event. The paintings were named as "Shell I" and "Shell II". Then came Encik Rosli (our friend), he was interested for the "Pastor Jack".

It was a successful "exhibition", we thought. I was glad so did my husband and children. A great amount of gratitude is due to my friends who are among the art lovers and who have decided to collect and owned some of our artworks.

Since then, I was encouraged to further displaying to the outsiders my artworks.

Plants and flowers come in various shapes, sizes and colours. Whatever their natural appearance maybe, they are constantly being revered by people and beasts alike. I love plants, flowers and wildlife, especially birds and fishes. They really steal my heart.

Although I seldom attend to our garden, it often rewards us with rich blooms and colours. I'm pleased to share with you some of the beauties our garden has to offer.

I am always amazed by God's artwork. It never fails to give me inspiration to paint. That's partly the reason why I chose one of the plants to be on my website banner. It was my husband's idea as the plant, "Rangoon Creeper", has been growing so well over our front pergola. Here are images of a photo and a painting of the plant.

Before anybody enters our front door, he or she is first greeted by its blossoms and fragrance. Similarly, I'd like to welcome my guests, by presenting this beautiful flora.

Rangoon creeper (Quisqualis indica), or akar dani in Malay, is an evergreen (in warmer climates) creeping shrub that can reach as much as 70 feet in tropical climates. It flowers throughout the summer with fragrant blossoms (especially at night) that open white, darken to pink and eventually red. This plant needs support for growing and is very useful in covering fences, pergolas, trellis supports, and walls.

Do you like art?

I love art, especially sceneries. I paint with acrylic. Painting with acrylic is fun. Although I also employ water colour sometimes. I like to paint waterfalls, lovely landscapes, cozy woods and more.

While painting, I always try to maintain a positive thought. Only with positive thoughts we can set our mind in good frame. That's what people say, and I tend to agree with them, if we want to produce good paintings. I would like to share with you some of my artworks. One of my earlier paintings was the "Kereta Lembu" (bullock-cart).

I started painting after quiting my previous job as a programmer, about four years ago. It started with a hobby, but now it has become a serious occupation. My interest in art started since young. My artworks were always hung on the wall by my art teacher.

Not everyone is born an artist, that's what I thought. With time and practice I began to develop my skill. Besides painting on my own, I learned some basic skills through the Internet and books.

I choose to draw what comes into my mind. I may not be a good artist but I will always try to improve my technique.

Kereta Lembu (Bullock-cart)

The bullock-cart, which is called 'kereta lembu' in Malay was the means of transport for the locals in the 40's till mid 60's. It has now been replaced by modern machines, and could now be seen only in certain rural areas, and on displays at cultural events.
