CASE STUDY # 5

There are many methods for free space allocation. One of this is the Best-fit memory allocation. Best-fit memory allocation on a fixed partition memory is the kind of memory allocation wherein a job to be allocated will search from the top block to the bottom for the smallest partition that fits the job. The job will then be allocated to the block that will have the least internal fragmentation or wasted memory.

In the situation given, Job 1 which has a size of 100k, and a turnaround of 3, will search from block 1 to block 5. The job does not fit in block 1 for it only has 50k of memory, in block 2 (200k), there is an internal fragmentation of 100k, in block 3 (70k), the job does not fit, in block 4 (115k), the internal fragmentation is 15k, and in block 5 (15k), the job does not fit. The job will then be allocated to the block which has the least internal fragmentation which is the block 4. Job 2 with a size of 10k will have 40k internal fragmentation in block 1. In block 2, job 2 will have an internal fragmentation of 190k, 60k in block 3, block 4 is already busy and 5k in block 5. Job 2 will have the least internal fragmentation in block 5; therefore job 2 will be allocated to block 5. Next on the queue is job 3 with a size of 35k. Job 3 will have 15k internal fragmentation in block 1, 165k in block 2, 35k in block 3, block 4 and 5 are already busy. The least internal fragmentation is in block 1. Thus, job 3 will then be allocated to block 1. Next is job 4 with a size of 15k. Block 1 is busy by job 3, job 4 will have internal fragmentation of 185k in block 2, 55k in block 3, and blocks 4 and 5 are already busy with jobs 1 and 2 respectively. Thus, with an internal fragmentation of 55k, job 4 will be allocated to block 3. For job 5 with a size of 23k, block 1 is already busy by job 3, block 2 will have an internal fragmentation of 177k, and block 3, 4, and 5 are already busy by jobs 4, 1 and 2 respectively. Thus, job 5 will be allocated to block 2. The memory is now full. This is the first turnaround for the jobs, and the last for jobs 2 and 4. As the second turnaround starts, blocks 3 and 5 will now be free, and the second turnaround starts for jobs 1, 3, and 5. For job 6 with a size of 6k, blocks 1 and 2 are still busy, in block 3, the internal fragmentation is 64k, block 4 is busy, and block 5 will have 9k internal fragmentation. Thus, job 6 will be allocated to block 5. For job 7, with a size of 25k, blocks 1 and 2 are full, block 3 will have 45ik internal fragmentation, and blocks 4 and 5 are full, thus job 7 will be allocated to block 3. As the next turnaround starts, blocks 1, 2, 3 and 5 will now be free and this marks the last turnaround for job 1. Job 8 with a size of 55k will not fit in block 1, will have 145k internal fragmentation in block 2, 15k in block 3, block 4 is still busy, and block 5 cannot cater job 8. Therefore, job 8 will be allocated to block 3. Job 9 with a size of 88k will not fit in block 1, have 112k internal fragmentation in block 2, blocks 3 and 4 are busy, and block 5 will not be enough for job 9. Therefore, job 9 will be allocated to block 2. Job 10 has a size of 100k, and though blocks 1 and 5 are free, job 10 will not fit in either of them. Thus, job 10 will be in the waiting list. As the next turnaround starts, block 4 will now be free and this marks the last turnaround for job 8, and the second for job 9. Job 10 with a size of 100k will not fit in block 1, blocks 2 and 3 are still busy, block 4 will have 15k internal fragmentation, and in block 5, job 10 will not fit. Thus, job 10 will be allocated to block 4. There are no more jobs in the queue; therefore, the turnaround is ended. For the next turnaround, block 3 will be free, and this marks the last turnaround for job 9 and the second for job 10. As the turnaround ends, job 9’s turnaround will now end. The next turnaround will be the last turnaround for job 10 and thus, all the blocks will be freed as it ends.

The other method for free space allocation is First-fit memory allocation. In this method, the job will search from the top block down to the last and allocate the first block of memory that fits the job’s size. As for the given situation, the set of jobs will be allocated to the given fixed-partitioned memory using First-fit memory allocation. For the first turnaround, job 1 with a size of 100k and a turnaround of 3 will search from the top block down to the last for the first block that will fit for it. Block 1 with a memory size of 50k cannot cater job 1. Block 2 with a memory size of 200k will allocate job 1 since it is the first block of memory that fits the job’s size. Job 2 with a size of 10k and a turnaround of 1 will be allocated to block 1 since block 1’s memory size is 50k. As for job 3 which had a size of 35k and a turnaround of 2, block 1 is already busy with job 2, and block 2 is also busy with job 1. Block 3 is free and has a size of 70k, enough to cater job 3. Therefore, job 3 will be allocated to block 3. As for job 4 with a size of 15k and a turnaround of 1, blocks 1, 2, and 3 are busy. Block 4 with a size of 115k will allocate job 4. Job 5, with a size of 23k will not be allocated to any other block for this turnaround since the remaining block, which is block 5 only has 15k of memory. So, job 5 will be moved to the waiting list. Job 6 with a size of 6k and a turnaround of 1, blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 are already busy. Block 5 with a size of 15k will allocate job 6. Since all the partitions are busy, the first turnaround will now end and all other jobs will be moved to the waiting list. Thus marks the end of the turnaround for jobs 2, 4 and 6. The next turnaround marks the second turnaround for job 1 and the last for job 3. Blocks 1, 4 and 5 are now free. Then job 5 with a size of 23k and a turnaround of 2 will be allocated to block 1 since it has 50k of memory. As for job 7 with a size of 25k and a turnaround of 1, blocks 1, 2 and 3 are busy with jobs 5, 1 and 3 respectively. Block 4 is free and has a size of 115k, enough to allocate job 7. Job 8 has a size of 55k, but blocks 1-4 are busy and block 5 has insufficient memory for it. Thus, it will wait for the next turnaround for a possible sufficient block of memory for it. The case is same with jobs 9 and 10, since its sizes are 88k and 100k respectively. As this turnaround ends, blocks 3 and 4 will be free. The next turnaround marks the last turnaround for jobs 1 and 5. As for job 8 with a size of 55k and a turnaround of 2, blocks 1 and 2 are still busy, and block 3 has a memory of 70k, enough for it. Thus, it will allocate Job 8. For job 9, with a size of 88k and a turnaround of 3, blocks 1-3 are busy, and block 4 with a size of 115k will allocate job 9. Job 10 with a size of 100k will no longer be allocated for this turnaround and will wait for the next since the remaining free block has insufficient memory for it. As this turnaround ends, jobs 1 and 5’s turnarounds will also end. For the next turnaround, this marks the second turnaround for job 9 and the last for job 8. Blocks 1, 2 and 5 are free. For job 10, with a size of 100k and a turnaround of 3, block 5, having 50k of memory will be insufficient for it. Block 2 has 200k of memory, thus job 10 will be allocated to block 2. There are no more waiting jobs. As this turnaround ends, job 8’s turnaround will end. The next turnaround will be the last for job 9 and the second for job 10. The end of this turnaround will also mark the end for job 9’s turnaround. The start of the next turnaround will be the last of job 10’s turnaround, and blocks 1, 3, 4 and 5 are free. The end of this turnaround also marks the end for job 10’s turnaround.

Another method for free space allocation is the Worst-fit memory allocation. In this method, the job will search from the top block down to the last and will be allocated to the block with the largest internal fragmentation or wasted memory space. In the given situation, the first turnaround will begin. For job 1 with a size of 100k and a turnaround of 3, it will not fit in block 1(50k), fits in block 2(200k) with an internal fragmentation of 100k,does not fit in block 3(70k), fits in block 4(115k) with an internal fragmentation of 15k, and does not fit in block 5(15k). Block 2(200k), having an internal fragmentation of 100k, being the largest internal fragmentation, will allocate memory for job 1. Job 2, with a size of 10k and a turnaround of 1, fits in block 1(50k) with 40k internal fragmentation, block 2 is already busy, fits in block 3(70k) with an internal fragmentation of 60k, fits in block 4(115k) with an internal fragmentation of 105k, and fits in block 5(15k) with 5k internal fragmentation. Block 4 will allocate job 2, being the block with the largest internal fragmentation. Job 3 with a size of 35k and a turnaround of 2, fits in block 1(50k) with an internal fragmentation of 15k, block 2 is busy, fits in block 3(70k) with 35k of internal fragmentation, block 4 is busy, and does not fit in block 5(6k). Thus, job 3 will be allocated to block 3. Job 4 with a size of 15k and a turnaround of 1, fits in block 1(50k) with an internal fragmentation of 35k, blocks 2, 3 and 4 are already busy, and fits in block 5(15k) with 0 internal fragmentation. Job 4 will now be allocated to block 1. Job 5 with a size of 23k, with blocks 1-6 already busy and block 5(15k) having insufficient memory size for it, will wait for the next turnaround. Job 6 with a size of 6k will be allocated to block 5(15k) since blocks 1-5 are busy. Since all the partitions are busy, the other jobs will no longer be allocated for this turnaround. This turnaround’s end will also mark the end for the turnarounds of jobs 2, 4 and 6. The next turnaround will be the second for job 1 and the last for job 3. Blocks 1, 4 and 5 are free. Job 5 with a size of 23k and a turnaround of 2, fits in block 1(50k) with an internal fragmentation of 27k, blocks 2 and 3 are busy, fits in block 4(115k) with an internal fragmentation of 92k, and will not fit in block 5(15k). Thus, job 5 will be allocated to block 4. Job 7 with a size of 25k and a turnaround of 1, will fit in block 1(50k) with an internal fragmentation of 25k, blocks 2-5 are busy and does not fit in block 5(15k). Hence, job 7 will be allocated to block 1. Job 8 has a memory of 55k, with the given situation that blocks 1-4 are busy and block 5 is insufficient, will wait for the next turnaround. Same with job 9 (88k) and job 10 (100k). The end of this turnaround will mark the end of the turnaround for jobs 7 and 3. The start of the next turnaround will mark the last turnaround for jobs 1 and 5. Blocks 1, 3 and 5 are free. Job 8 with a size of 55k and a turnaround of 2 will not fit in block 1(50k), block 2 is busy, fits in block 3(70k) with an internal fragmentation of 15k, block 4 is busy, and block 5 is insufficient. Thus, job 8 will be allocated to block 3. Job 9 with a size of 88k will not fit in block 1(50k), blocks 2-4 are busy, and will not fit in block 5(15k). Hence, job 9 will wait for the next turnaround. Job 10 with a size of 100k will also wait for the next turnaround since no other block fits its required size. This turnaround’s end will also be the end of jobs 1 and 5’s turnaround. The next turnaround will mark the last turnaround for job 8. Blocks 1, 2, 4, and 5 are free. Job 9 with a size of 88k and a turnaround of 3 will not fit in block 1(50k), fit in block 2(200k) with an internal fragmentation of 112k, block 3 is busy, fit in block 4(115k) with an internal fragmentation of 27k, but will not fit in block 5(15k). Therefore, job 9 will be allocated to block 2. Job 10 with a size of 100k and a turnaround of 3, will not fit in block 1(50k), blocks 2 and 3 are busy, fit in block 4(115k) with an internal fragmentation of 15k, but will not fit in block 5(15k). So, job 10 will be allocated to block 4. There are no more jobs to be allocated. When this turnaround ends, the turnaround for job 8 also ends. The start of the next turnaround will be the second turnaround of jobs 9 and 10. When the turnaround ends and start anew, that will be the final turnaround for jobs 9 and 10, and thus ending that turnaround results to the completion of the execution of the jobs for that certain program.

DYNAMIC PARTITION

Job 7 and the other jobs must have to wait since there are no more blocks that would fit their sizes.

Since it is Dynamic Partition, Job 9 and Job 10 can not load anymore because their sizes are too large to fit into the remaining free memory blocks.

RELOCATABLE DYNAMIC PARTITION

When job 7 arrives requiring 25K, the initial memory shows external fragmentation. Using Relocatable Dynamic Partition the external fragmentation immediately eliminated after compaction, making room for job 7.

In a multiprogramming and time-sharing environment, several users share the system simultaneously. This situation can result in various security problems. Name at least two of these problems. Can we ensure the same degree of security in a time-share machine as we have in a dedicated machine? Explain your answer

Multiprogramming is a rudimentary form of parallel processing in which several programs are run at the same time on a uniprocessor. Since there is only one processor , there can be no true simultaneous execution of different programs. Instead, the operating system executes part of one program, then part of another, and so on. To the user it appears that all programs are executing at the same time.

One problem that could occur is that one user may modify the data which is required by another user. For example, User A is saving a data in the CPU, and User B is browsing some files and unintentionally modified the file that User A is doing, it could ruin the files of which User A is doing and it could end up in a mess. Another example is that when User A is decrypting a data that very important and private, but User B intentionally removes the data or is decrypting also the data at the same time. This could lead into a certain mislead action and is possibly a dangerous one.

Time-sharing is the sharing of a computing resource among many users by means of multiprogramming and multi-tasking. Its introduction in the 1960s, and emergence as the prominent model of computing in the 1970s, represents a major technological shift in the history of computing. By allowing a large number of users to interact concurrently with a single computer, time-sharing dramatically lowered the cost of providing computing capability, made it possible for individuals and organizations to use a computer without owning one, and promoted the interactive use of computers and the development of new interactive applications. Dedicated Machine is a computer that services one primary function or task. For example, an automobile might have an onboard computer that is dedicated solely to navigation.

As what we know, time-sharing machine is a shared process which different users can access the entire computer in the same time. The more complex it can get the more dangerous and harmful the threats can be on that computer. Unlike in a dedicated machine, one user can only access the file at a time so the lesser will be the harm on the machine.

A portable computer that is small enough to be held in one's hand. Although extremely convenient to carry, handheld computers have not replaced notebook computers because of their small keyboards and screens. The most popular hand-held computers are those that are specifically designed to provide PIM (personal information manager) functions, such as a calendar and address book.

In being a newspaper reporter, information is very important and he/she should have the wide range of knowledge in different kinds of field. He/she should be open-minded and informative of what is happening around the world. As a newspaper reporter, he/she should also have the device in order to keep track of the happenings in the globe or in his/her country. He/she will need a device that could make his/her work much easier than usual. Having a handheld computer can help and do his/her job much easier with a vast range of information in his/her palm. He/she can actually use the device in order to jut down the information’s he/she has taken. With the use of a handheld computer, he/she can easily browse the internet with just one click away on getting the hottest news around the globe. He/she can also use all the applications like video and camera in order to capture some interesting and important events.

As a manager in a supermarket, he/she will be in need of vast range of customers in order to gain clients or investors in his supermarket. He/she will be in need of the news about the prices and increases of goods that he/she is selling into his/her supermarket. Imagine having a supermarket but you don’t have the knowledge about the products that you are selling. It could end up in a bankruptcy. A handheld computer/device can actually save a sinking business with a simple glitch. He/she can use the handheld computer in order to browse the news or the change in prices or even the information’s regarding to which product should sell best. Knowing which the best is or which is not is very important in having a business like running a supermarket. Knowing the most convenient way is the best way to be successful in a business. We, people, should take advantage of what we have right now and make use of it in order to survive in this battle.

Condor High-Throughput Computing System

Condor is an open source high-throughput computing software framework for coarse-grained distributed parallelization of computationally intensive tasks. It can be used to manage workload on a dedicated cluster of computers, and/or to farm out work to idle desktop computers — so-called cycle scavenging. Condor runs on Linux, UNIX, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and contemporary Windows operating systems. Condor can seamlessly integrate both dedicated resources (rack-mounted clusters) and non-dedicated desktop machines (cycle scavenging) into one computing environment.

Condor was the scheduler software used to distribute jobs for the first draft assembly of the Human Genome.

· •Interactive Systems

UNIX operating system

Operating systems that allows user to use interactive programs,
pretty much all operating systems that are on PCs are interactive OS's.

In 1977, ISC was the first commercial UNIX vendor, selling IS/1, a Version 6 Unix variant enhanced for office automation which ran on most PDP-11's. The later IS/3 and IS/5 were enhanced versions of System III and System V for PDP-11 and VAX.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the influence of Unix in academic circles led to large-scale adoption of Unix (particularly of the BSD variant, originating from the University of California, Berkeley) by commercial startups, the most notable of which are Solaris, HP-UX and AIX. Today, in addition to certified Unix systems such as those already mentioned, Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and BSD descendants (FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD) are commonly encountered. The term "traditional Unix" may be used to describe a Unix or an operating system that has the characteristics of either Version 7 Unix or UNIX System V.

Transaction Processing Facility

Transaction Processing Facility is an IBM real-time operating system for mainframes descended from the IBM System/360 family, including zSeries and System z9. The name is initialism for Transaction Processing Facility.

TPF evolved from the Airlines Control Program (ACP), a free package developed in the mid-1960s by IBM in association with major North American and European airlines. In 1979, IBM introduced TPF as a replacement for ACP — and as a priced software product. The new name suggests its greater scope and evolution into non-airline related entities.

Current users include Sabre (reservations), Amadeus (reservations), VISA Inc (authorizations), American Express (authorizations), EDS SHARES (reservations), Holiday Inn (central reservations), CBOE (order routing), Singapore Airlines, KLM, Qantas, Amtrak, Marriott International, Travelport and the NYPD (911 system).

· •Hybrid Systems

NeXTSTEP operating system

NeXT Computer Inc. is named the company that was set up by Steve Jobs in 1985. Steve Jobs was previous at Apple and made independently with the company NeXT. The company NeXT was taken by Apple completely for 400 million dollars later. The developed operating system NEXTSTEP is UNIX related and also contains parts of the BSD and the Mach Kernel, therefore it is compatibly to BSD (4.2 BSD release). In 1990 the first web server and client in the CERN was set up on a NeXTStep system available. NeXTStep was used on special computers, x86 CPUs and Motorola CPUs were supported.

NeXTSTEP is a multitasking operating system that was developed by NeXT Computer to run on its range of proprietary workstation computers, such as the NeXTcube, and later, other computer architectures.

NeXTSTEP was a combination of several parts:

§ a Unix-like operating system based on the Mach kernel, plus source code from BSD

§ Display PostScript and a windowing engine

§ the Objective-C language and runtime

§ an object-oriented (OO) application layer, including several "kits"

§ development tools for the OO layers

Symbian Operating System

Symbian OS is one of Nokia's mobile operating systems for mobile devices and smart phones, with associated libraries, user interface, frameworks and reference implementations of common tools, originally developed by Symbian Ltd. It is a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed.

In 2008, the former Symbian Software Limited was acquired by Nokia and a new independent non-profit organisation called the Symbian Foundation was established. Symbian OS and its associated user interfaces S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) were contributed by their owners to the foundation with the objective of creating the Symbian platform as royalty-free, open source software. The platform has been designated as the successor to Symbian OS, following the official launch of the Symbian Foundation in April 2009. The Symbian platform was officially made available as open source code in February 2010.

Symbian OS was created with three systems design principles in mind:

§ the integrity and security of user data is paramount,

§ user time must not be wasted, and

§ All resources are scarce.

Fieldtrip Overview

One the first day, we went to Social Security System and First Web Academy. We learned all about the networking strategies of SSS and the animations of First Web Academy. On the second day, we had our whole day seminar in UP – Diliman where we were also toured at Ayala Techno Hub and IBM. On the third day, we visited Advanced Science & Technology Institute and Telecom Training Institute. On the fourth day, we visited PLDT where we were introduced with their machines. On the fifth and final day, we went to MMDA or Metropolitan Manila Development Authority where they let us see how they monitor the traffic and other stuffs.

Day 1

Today, I went on a company visit to the SSS or Social Security System located at East Avenue, Quezon City; (for those students who were assigned in Bus 1 and Bus2). But what is Social Security System? What does Social Security System do to help our country? Can this seminar help us in our field of choice? Can we benefit from these? How can this be related to IT? These are some of the few questions that are popping out in our mind when we visited this company. The Social Security System protects the economic security of workers, retirees and their families. Unlike in the system in the United States, the Philippine system allows for loans (salary loans, etc.) and offers maternity benefits. I like their facilities and their employees because they are so kind. They tour us to their library and museum. During the discussion, their speaker did not tackle any topic that is related to assembly language. Most of their explanations are all about what they offers and networking.

On their discussion regarding IT matters, Database is always present. After our stopover in Social Security System (SSS), we had our lunch at Great Eastern Hotel located at Makati City. And after our lunch in Great Eastern Hotel, we had our second company visit at First Web Academy and it was also located at Makati City so it was kind of a neighborhood trip from the location where we ate our lunch. Arriving at our second company visit, as we enter through the hallway, we’ve seen many Anime drawings and graphical designs posted in the walls. And as we move further, I’ve seen lots of people, classified as teenagers and adults facing their computer. As we look through on what they are doing, we glanced at the monitor and we’ve seen sketches and graphical designs of anime stuffs. There are even people who do animation on stuffs and it was so cool. As we arrived in our meeting hall, we momentary look at the surroundings and there were lots of much cooler stuffs posted in each wall. As we go on with our seminar in that building, they taught us how to use different kinds of softwares that specializes in editing and animating drawings. The first speaker introduced a software named “Maya” were it can be used to make 3D animation. In old times, they usually use 2D animation but nowadays, most of the movies used 3D animation including advertisements and stuffs. The difference between 2D and 3D is that it refers to the actual dimensions in a computer’s workspace. 2D is ‘flat’’, using X and Y (horizontal and vertical) axis, the image has only two dimensions where as compared to 3D, it has an additional axis where it is called the Z axis, it allows for the rotation and the depth of the image. That is why 3D looks more realistic than 2D animation. ‘UP’ is an example of a 3D movie, whereas almost all of the upcoming movies and shows now are based on 3D effects. After the seminar, we went to SM Mall of Asia where we were set free by our Professors for a couple of hours for us to roam around the humongous mall. After that, at around 8 o’clock in the evening, we were obliged to meet at Atcha’s Restaurant for our dinner. After our dinner, we resided back to our hotel in Paco, Manila. The name of the hotel is Manila Garden Plaza Hotel.

What I learned?

I’ve learned the meaning of Social Security System and the transaction that they were using. What I learned most in our visit in SSS is not mostly all about IT, but instead all about the techniques that they used in their market strategy for their business. And in our second company visit, I’ve learned the difference of 2D and 3D animation. I’ve also learned slightly on how to use the “Maya” software.

What I liked?

What I liked the most is the company visit in First Web Academy, because I was amused of how does my favorites anime shows was made and in that company visit, I learned a bit of information’s and some of my questions were slightly answered.

What I didn’t like?

What I didn’t like with that day is that time was so fast, in my opinion, I do want to learn more about animations and stuffs but I don’t either want to lessen the time left for us to roam through Metro Manila.

Day 2

Today, I went on a company visit to University of the Philippines for a UP-USEP

Information Technology Symposium held at UP Information Technology Training Center. One of their speakers named Rose Ann Sale, an MS Computer Science student in UP Diliman, discussed “Writing a Winning Thesis”. On her discussion she tackled about their spelling application called

KineSpell2 she discussed that she used a microcontroller for the remote control. For the remote control, she used a simple codes, assembler and installed it to the microcontroller so that it works. Though they used java as their preferred language on their application, they still used assembly language for some of its component. Aside from Ms. Rose Ann Sale, there were still other speakers on the said symposium. They are John Boaz Lee, he tackled about algorithms,

Prof Carlos Bott, a software engineer with an MBA, Dr. Ferdinand Pitagan, Michele Moscatel and Prof. Lemuel Brana. After we visit UP Diliman Information Technology Training Center, we visit two companies that use an assembly language it is the IBM Innovation Center and Seachange located at the UP-AYALA techno hub. They also use a sensor, and assembler that installed in a controller for detection purposes that apply on some of their facilities like doors. IBM is an outsourcing company that offers hardware, software matters. IBM or the International Business Machines (IBM) located at UP-Ayala Techno Hub. IBM produces and trades computer hardware and software, and proposes infrastructure services, hosting services, and consulting services in areas varying from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. They have their LAB SPACE for IT software developers. They also have a laboratory or let we say a space for their servers and controllers that are needed for connection. As we can observed, almost all console gaming schemes of the most modern generation use microprocessors created and produced by IBM. For instance, the Xbox 360 contains a PowerPC tri-core processor, which was designed and produced by IBM. Also, Sony's PlayStation 3 features the Cell BE microprocessor developed in cooperation by IBM, Toshiba, and Sony. Nintendo's seventh-generation console called Wii features a chip code named Broadway created also by IBM and the older Nintendo GameCube utilizes the Gekko processor, also designed by IBM. On IBM Innovation Center, the speaker told us that from the past years IBM produces microcontrollers and simply controllers. IBM Philippines also competes to the different IBM companies all throughout the world. Another company is the SeaChange, their products are more on video streaming and multimedia telecommunication. SeaChange International, Inc. is the worldwide leader in multi-screen video and one of the biggest software companies around the world. The company gives innovative, Emmy award-winning solutions and services for back office, promotion, content, in-home gadgets and transmit to hundreds of media companies internationally, including blue chips such as Comcast, Virgin Media, AT&T, Hutchison Whampoa, Vodacom and DISH Network. More of their clients are from different countries. They also use an assembler and controller for detection purposes.

What I learned?

I’ve learned that there are so many languages that we don’t know yet. As we visited UP-Diliman, I was awaken by the truth that my knowledge in computers are not that wide enough, I was inspired by seeing the fellow UPians presenting their thesis project to us. I also learned that in programming, the very most important part is the algorithm, without understanding the algorithm of a program, you will never solve each of the problems that you’re professor would given to you.

What I liked?

What I liked the most in this day is that I’ve seen various things that made me inspired in my course, the facilities of the UP Diliman has obviously gave the students out there a big advantage compared with other schools. I don’t know with other schools but for me, what’s good is that in every department, they must let their students excel on the field that they are good at because no matter how hard you tried, if you don’t have interest on what the field you are doing, you will never enjoy and excel with that. And in relation with UP Diliman, they segregated each of the students, there are different rooms in their department and students can choose which room can they excel with.

What I didn’t like?

What I don’t like is that in each of the speakers in UP Diliman, they were given a limited time that the information that is coming to us are also limited and it was kind of annoying. When we start to get interested with the topics that they were discussing, there gets the time that they will instantaneously end it and boredom strikes back to us.

Day 3

Today, I went on a company visit to Advanced Science & Technology Institute located at C.P. Garcia, UP, Diliman, Quezon City. In this institute, they tackled more on their products and how their products work. They introduced a product that is like a mobile phone but has a advantage compared to a normal mobile phone. They also introduced the “Bayanihan Linux” which is a Filipino based desktop focused on Linux distribution. What is a Linux? Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was designed to provide personal computer users a free or very low-cost operating system comparable to traditional and usually more expensive UNIX systems. After the seminar, they introduced their merchandise and souvenirs to us and some of us bought from them. Some of us had they’re picture taking with the gorgeous speakers. After visiting the Advanced Science & Technology Institute, we had our lunch at Max’s Restaurant located at Roces, Quezon City. After our lunch, we headed to our next company visit.

The second company that we visit is the TTI or Telecommunication Training Institute located at Valenzuela City. TTI offers serious telecommunications teaching for Engineering professionals, new graduates, and apprentices alike that are aspiring to be a part and grow in the field of the ever-needed telecoms industry. They offer customized courses appropriate for a company and individual desires. On the discussion they’ve made they taught us different structures on their system, the structures were a bit complicated because of the wires, LEDs and other circuits placed in. What was being discussed in TTI was a bit similar on that of PLDT since they both concerned in telecommunication.

They explained to us how telephone works and how communication devices transmit waves to another device. They also explained the approximate capacity of each device where it can still receive the waves from another device. Usually, they use the fiber optic wires, where is so expensive not including the materials and the strippers of that kind of wire. After the seminar, we went to Tutuban Shopping Center where we had our shopping in the Divisoria. But sadly, I and my classmate separated from the group for us to go to Robinson’s Galleria with my old friend that is currently residing in Manila. My old friend tour us in Manila, and we ride a LRT in order for us to get to Robinson’s Galleria(not knowing that Robinson’s Galleria is very near to our hotel, a walk able distance though). After that trip, we headed back to the Hotel.

What I learned?

I’ve learned the meaning of Linux and the different devices that they’ve introduced to us. I also learned how radioactive waves travel from one another. And as we went to Robinson’s Galleria, I realized that life in Manila is not that easy because the place is so crowdy.

What I liked?

I very much like the trip I this day, because I’ve learned new great things especially in the seminar in Telecom Training Institute. I also like our trip in the LRT where we experienced the rush in riding the LRT.

What I didn’t like?

Actually in this day, there’s nothing that I don’t like. Well, maybe the tiredness of our body after we went back to the hotel.

Day 4

Today, I went on a company visit to PLDT or Philippines Long Distance Company located at Mandaluyong City. The first speaker tackled the history of PLDT. On our tour on the PLDT Lab most of the topics that were discussed were all about networking since PLDT is a telecommunication company. They tackled the Open System Interconnection model (OSI) that is the primary model for network connection. With the use of the OSI model, they explained how information travels around the network, the role and importance of each layer, and also they mentioned that as the distance of connection from one place to another increases, the size of the wire it uses also increases. PLDT is using a fiber optic cable since it is a networking medium capable of conducting modulated light transmission. PLDT has also engaged in wireless communication by inventing a wireless phone which uses wireless signals from electromagnetic waves that can pass through to vacuum of outer space and through air.

PLDT also uses biometric since as what I have observed, they just showed their ID on a small sensor beside the door, and when it identifies the ID, the door automatically opened. On their discussion they’ve discussed the different business model they used. They brought us to their board room and on the side of it was the laboratory or room for managing and determining the connections that were under the PLDT landlines. After that seminar, we had a take-out lunch (“KFC”, Finger Licking Good) and after few minutes, we departed from PLDT and we are heading next to Tagaytay City for sightseeing. We went to People’s Park in Tagaytay City, we took pictures from the over-looking sceneries and shopped some souvenirs for our beloved ones. There are so many things to buy but the budget can’t quite fit for it. After our sightseeing in Tagaytay, we went to Enchanted Kingdom. We tried the Space Shuttle even though that the time is almost over, we forced to finish the line in order to take a ride from it. And YES, after the ride, we were so exhausted and dizzy. After that we headed back to Tutuban Center Mall for another Shopping for those who aren’t contented with their shopping here yesterday. They just gave us a meal allowance for our dinner this evening and after that, we head back to the hotel for us to rest because tomorrow’s going to be our last day here in Manila.

What I learned?

What I really like and that is so unforgettable is the ride in Enchanted Kingdom, it was a heck of fun but I swear to myself that I will never ever ride that Space Shuttle ride again !

Actually, I loved this day, there’s so much to remember and to reminisce with this day. I had so much fun with this day.

Day 5

Today, I went on a company visit to MMDA. MMDA is the last company that we visited and it is my favorite. MMDA stands for Metropolitan Manila Development Authority. MMDA has a Development Planning, Transport and Traffic Management, Flood Control and sewerage management, and Public Safety. As Information Technology/Computer Science student, my main objective for visiting their company is to see and discover new things on their IT infrastructure or IT area. So the area for us is the Transport and Traffic Management. Transport and Traffic Management includes the formulation, coordination and monitoring of policies, standards, programs and projects to rationalize the existing transport operations, infrastructure requirements, the use of thoroughfares; and promotion of safe and convenient movement of persons, goods; provision for the mass transport system and the institution of a system to regulate road users; administration and implementation of all traffic enforcement operations, traffic engineering services and traffic education programs, including the institution of a single ticketing system.

Fortunately, MMDA allow us to visit their IT infrastructure. We are lucky enough to visit there.

Our main topic on visiting their IT infrastructure was all about TRAFFIC LIGHTS, on how they implement and design it. MMDA used an assembler language to implement different functions on their traffic lights; an assembler is used to translate assembly language statements into the target computer's machine code. The assembler performs a more or lessisomorphic translation (a one-to-one mapping) from mnemonic statements into machine instructions and data. This is in contrast with high-level languages, in which a single statement generally results in many machine instructions. They install the codes on a controller and each signal support location is put in place and connecting wires are pulled through the conduits. Power for the signal is brought to the controller location. If sensors are to be placed in the road, they are connected to the controller as well. The supports are bolted in place, and wires are pulled through the hollow supports between the base and the signal stack mounting point. The signal stacks are attached to the supports. The wiring is then connected between all the elements of the system. Each individual light is given a final adjustment to aim it properly, the sequence timers in the controller are set to the specifications determined by the traffic engineers, and the system is cycled several times to test for proper operation of each element. The sensor is installed 3 meters away from the intersection line for the detection of vehicles.

What I learned?

To sum all the learning’s that I’ve gathered on the company visit in MMDA, I can conclude that the traffic light that they are maintaining is not useless. It can be very useful to us and it can also lessen the percentage of having an accident involving heavy-catastrophe of car incidents.

What I liked?

What I liked about this even though that this is the final day is that learning’s that I’ve acquired throughout the week especially with this day. Even in a short period of time, MMDA has made us realized and they really thought us the devices and the process that they were doing in order to maintain the peace and order in the traffic railways.

What I didn’t like?

What I don’t like is that this is the final day. But in terms of the seminar this day, the video footage of the incidents whereas involving the deaths of people who are intake of alcohol while they were driving. I just don’t like seeing real people getting killed by an instant.

APPENDIX:

What can I recommend for the improvement of the Fieldtrip and Seminar Program?

My reaction for this year’s fieldtrip is that it’s a success for a pioneering subject in the IC department. Many students were given knowledge about what’s happening in the real world. We were given information’s and relevant ideas that can help us in our studies. The vast ideas that could really help us in our future thesis proposal could make a big chance in our lives. What I can recommend or as of my opinion, the schedules should be more properly arranged for the upcoming fieldtrips in this department where I belong. And also, may I suggest that they could give a free one day for the students to really enjoy their stay in Manila and meet up with their fellow relatives/friends. Some were given a chance but that chance was very short that you could say that it was like a once of a lifetime opportunity to go there and sadly you didn’t even meet up with the people you are supposed to meet up with. I know that it was an educational trip but as what I’ve said, a recommendation only, students just want to max up their time/chance on being in Manila.

My advice to those who are going to take their Fieldtrip and Seminar program in the near future.

My advice to those who are going to take their Field Trip and Seminars is that they should enjoy every little single minute they had. They should take advantage on the fact that they are in a new place, where knowledge can be gain. And if they are in a seminar, they should ask questions so that in the near future, that knowledge can be applied to it.

What is a business? There are so many business nowadays, and it's not easy to survived in the world of business. So as a technopreneur, we/I should think ways in order to surpass this. Techno business is where business and technology meets.

If I were given a chance to have my own business, I would go for a selling site. An example of a selling site is "http://www.pojo.com" or http://www.ideal808.com" . I would go for a website that sells what caught up my interest. Those sites sells products such as trading card game merchandise. I would go for a business where I engaged in a online business and can also be called as a worldwide business because anybody in this world can easily access and buy products from me. I would also go for a business where my interest fits well because while I'm doing this business, at the same time, I would enjoy from doing it. We can never say that this business would suck because in U.S. and Japan, and all other countries, these trading card games really sells high price and many big Business Tycoons from U.S. engaged in playing these card games. In fact, in U.S., the trading card game called "Magic The Gathering" is well known over there. I have a research that in Manila, trading card games and anime stuffs are top sellers in their place. And with this kind of business, that is so broad, that means that if my business would be well-advertised, there's a big chance that many people can buy from my online shop. In short, my business would succeed.

We all know that there are so many people that are fanatics of Anime stuff. By that, we can conclude that there are so many people dying to have anime merchandise. This business is so broad that you can add many stuffs in this online shopping store. For example, if I'd add Gundam merchandise here, as of my research, there so many gundam addicts out there and collecting Gundam stuffs is not a "so so" . The prices are mostly 3-4 digits.

There are so many opportunities with these kind of business.

With these, you can take advantage of the power of the world wide web and advertise your online shop to people. You can easily advertise through social networking sites like (E.g. "facebook" and "twitter"). You can actually save more with this kind of advertising.

Direct Selling:

You can also direct sell to those people who are near your place. With that, you can have many options on how to earn money.

Pyramid:

I call this process as a pyramid, where you sell your products to those little shops in malls for them to also sell the merchandise that they bought from me. And with that, I can also advertise my products to other people who buys from their shop.

What are the lessons that you learned after reading the commencement address of Steve Jobs?

In our life, there are always ups and downs. Each day that passes by, there are problems and trials that we are facing through. And each of the boulder is a powerful key to a bright future. Whether we are in the top right now, or maybe even at our sinking state, what matters most is that we are alive and we should not see our problems as a sign of misfortune, instead we should view it as our stepping stone.

Many people are coming in our lives and each them are there for a purpose, each second in our life means everything, because a single lost cent can never bring back the things that you've got at your past. We should value each day, and cherish moment in our lives.

We were asked by our facilitator to write our reaction about the commencement of Steve Jobs. What our facilitator asked us to do is not only for complying requirements, I believe that there's a hidden learning's behind it. I also believe that each work or chore has a moral lesson inside it.

There are three stories that Steve Jobs state in his commencement. In each story, there lies a great inspirational lessons in our lives that he has to share.

In the first story...
YOU'VE GOT TO FIND WHAT YOU LOVE-
In this statement, what comes in to my mind is that I've got to realize what I really want to do in my life, what makes me satisfy, what makes me happy, and last but not the least, what makes me contented.

Determining the Intelligent Quotient (IQ), Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Adversity Quotient (AQ) is very important. By knowing your personal traits, you can even know better of yourself. Observing one’s personality makes you curious above others. It makes you realize on how you act, socialize and know once behavior. One’s personality is unique above others on how you manage and develop yourself. Sometimes you encountered difficulties on how to interpret our own traits and behavior as a person. In such case, we need to search and know more on how we make ourselves in control.

My reflections/insights on my personal traits test

We should know all of these because on knowing these, you can determine on how you react from certain happenings in your life. This test aims to inform the test taker who he is as an individual and how he acts in front of his friends or complete stranger. By definition taken from the internet, personality trait define as the “the unique set of characteristics and qualities that a person uniquely possess”. Though it is stated each of an individual has unique characteristics but there are a few do have the same characteristics but a way that a person implement to combine his traits in a different way makes it to create a unique irreplaceable conglomeration of traits as an individual.

The first kind of personal trait is the Intelligence Quotient. Intelligence Quotient is derived from one of several different standardized tests designed to assess intelligence. This test is used by the schools for entrance examination for the upcoming students. Like here in our school, they use IQ test as I observed and tested. When I took again the exam in the internet, fortunately I was able to get a high score and it was stated “High” in the result. I was amazed by the result but I am aware that intelligence itself can’t be based with by this result only; the word intelligence for me is very broad and has so many fields. There are people who are bad in math but good in other fields, for me, intellectual capacity can be determined through how they make a move in life. Because for me, Life is like the game of “chess”, every move counts and you should plan every move you make, one wrong move can lead to destruction of your dreams. And of course, in life, there comes your opponent, that opponent is your problems, that makes you weak, and that makes you struggle on what move you are going to take next. As we can see, it is like the definition of EQ, but I can still say that it is also like IQ, because the game “chess” is a game of Giants where intellectual people play.

There is no suggestion in order to improve our intelligence quotient rather; it can be improved in our own. We can test our IQ once a month to know if our IQ had improved during our daily activities.
*In the business world, it is not important to have a high Intelligence Quotient. It is needs a high Emotional Quotient. The importance in the business is you know how to deal with the other people. To measure it, you must take an Emotional Quotient Test. I took this test in the internet and again, amazingly I got a pretty high score. And this is the interpretation of my result.

As a reaction to these results, I can say that I had so many experiences in life, through thick and thin, through struggles and happiness, I did surpass it all but I know that there are more to come in my life. I was inspired by this result and hoping for it to be stable in the near future. Having a high EQ means that the person has better ways on how he/she handles/reacts with certain situations he/she is facing towards with. It is defined as how he/she interacts with people that he/she doesn’t know.
There are so many bad things and good things happening in our life. And it can’t be altered, those problems are inevitable and we can’t do anything about it. It’s up to us on how we do something to bring back ourselves again. Some persons are miserable when they encounter such problems. They feel that they are alone and no one understands them can lead to suicidal attempt. But we can’t really say that they are stupid for doing that, let’s think and put ourselves to their situation and then ask ourselves if what we are going to do if we are in they’re position. We can’t really judge them from being like that, those problems in life provokes them to do such things as killing themselves. As for the study, people who are attempting to commit suicide are in low of EQ or Emotional Quotient. They opt to run away from problems instead of doing something to solve it. Sometimes, I can even feel the sadness when someone is not with me or even the depression when I received a low mark of grade in school. As of now, the greatest problem in my life is about one of my subjects. One of our professors gave a project, and I was not aware of the deadline because I think that it can still be passed next week. But news came in, my classmate informs me that the project’s deadline was yesterday and even though that I’m already finished making it, I wasn’t able to pass it. And my classmate added that all students who didn’t pass their projects yesterday will surely receive “INC”, as soon as I’ve read that word, my whole world crushed down, I was so depressed that my urge to do my other assignments were gone. It hurts that I was not inform about the deadline. It hurts more when I reminisce those days and nights I’ve spent making machine problems just to pass this subject. It was my first time to receive a mark of “INC”. And I promised to myself that I wouldn’t dare to have a little bit chance of receiving that kind of grade again. But even now, I can’t still forget or moved on with that, the point that I sacrifice a lot of things just to make that project, but I should really bring back myself again and regain my confidence. That was an example of emotional scene, even though how great problems come to our lives; we should really do something in order to step forward with it. E = explore -- This element stands for exploring both the origin and ownership of the situation. If an individual doesn't feel a sense of ownership, they won't take action.
A = analyze -- It is important to take steps to analyze the evidence and to separate fact from assumptions. You need to examine and dispute any destructive elements of your response. Look at the limitations of the adversity itself, not the limitations you might face to improve the situation.

D = do something -- But do it carefully, do not rush. Think about any additional information you might need, what actions would help to overcome the adversity -- examine the what, where, when and why questions to confirm your goal. Don't just write a list of actions, commit to a time and date.

In the world of technoprenuership, the state of neuroticism is possibly can affect a technoprenuer. For instance, if his/her market or business seems to be in bankruptcy, or the technoprenuer has the problem of capital, problem of personnel, problem in competitions and lots more. In our life, we really want to be rich because being rich can lessen all the burdens in our life, though I can't really make us happy because money can't buy everything, but still generally speaking, most of us really need it. In the field of business, we can be on the road of cycle where we can be on the top of ladder or even on the ground where cockroaches lives, if you know what I really mean. In being a successful business man, the way how we approach and the way we respond on certain situations are very useful and important of course. Every move we make can either lead us to being successful or being a misfortune loser in this field. I've figured out that in this field of business, it isn't important if the inventor of the inventions is us, what's important is to be wise and take advantage of it in every ways we can, even though that we aren't the inventors, we can still develop their inventions and make use of it, nevertheless the less effort we can get because we just sprouted the ideas of other and sprinkled it with our new innovations of ideas, making it a better one. But we must not forget to look back to the path that once we travelled and sees the people that once in our life we enjoyed being with.
As a conclusion, in this kind of world, what I realized is that the mindset should be wider, and we should think outside the box, to be an employer is the greatest thing to be and we should change this mindset to a new one. No being has become rich just because of graduating in college and become an employee. In being a business man, we got to think different, we should be open-minded and risking should be our hobby. He play pranks and jokes that can hurt other people, he treats people like a bug where he can play with it whenever he wants to and pinch it after he's not into it anymore. That's a damn thing he does to people, and even his very close friend, Woz, he didn't care about Woz because all he cares about his himself. Also Steve Jobs is a liar, he did lie to the public that he doesn't have an affair to his girlfriend and he didn't own the baby. He actually lied to many people and take advantage in every bit of it, he did also make used of other inventions like the "mouse" thingy, he did bought it and develop it and sell it in a higher price, well, he can actually sell it easily because of his name, name really matters and fame also does too.

And at this time, Bill gates entered his life, and that was the start of his falling down status. Bill Gates realized that the only way to defeat his enemy is to be much closer to them, as in really tight like best buds. When he realizes and discovers the motives of Bill Gates being close to him, he did actually fall after 3 months i think of that encounter, after he announces Mr. Gates as the developer of "Microsoft”.
The weakness of Steve Jobs is that he has too much of self-confidence and that was the reason of his downfall; he did bring down his own self with his carelessness. Too much greediness can lead to sudden death in one’s life; it can lead to a severe demise that no medicine can cure at all. Technopreneurship is the fusion of technology and entrepreneurship. It’s the new key for success in life and it’s the new mindset that people should consider. Technopreneur is a person who sees technology as an advantage and thinks that entrepreneurship should not stand alone, the fact that this kind of fusion can really help any kind of business much easier.
When I was still a child, my mindset is to have a business. I always dream of having an internet café or a restaurant, having this dream come true is my mission in life. I really want to have a business; there was a time that I dream of having a farm, having chickens and any other animals and even planting crops to sell. There was a time that in my grade school days when I’m studying at Holy Child of Mintal, I bought some card packs and sell it to my classmates. My mindset was that “Every Big Business starts with a small one” and with that thing, I’m still holding on to it, believing it would come true when I grow up. Everytime my relatives build a business like Internet Café or a “Karinderya”, they always fail, and I always say to myself that If I where the owner of that, I would handle it better than how they handle it. If only I would be given a chance to manage a business, but I know, before managing a business, I should first learn the basics of Business Management and all sorts of stuff. For me, I can see myself as a business man who accepts ideas from other and develop it into a new one. I think broad but still there’s this thing with me that when I’m not in a good mood, ideas won’t just come out from my mind and it was like my mind is floating, that’s the time when I hate myself as a technopreneur. I also plan to build a site where I sell stuffs through global internet, in that way I can advertise my site much easier. With internet, we can do things we want in no time, the fastest way to promote your merchandise is through advertisement and the usage of internet, and that is the time where technopreneurship comes in. Being a creative thinker would really help any business man, and I believe that I possess that thing. What’s more important is that I risk everything just to get what I want and that’s one factor a technopreneur should have in itself. Come to think of this, when you’re planning to build a business and you’re afraid that your business might not work, and you don’t have the strength to risk your idea, how will you know that your business would click or not if you don’t even try it. Bill Gates is a role model in this kind of field, he risks everything and rely it all to his own ideas, and now, he is the richest man on earth. Being wise is a good factor in being successful, and we should use every idea as an advantage and rebuild it into a real business. Career is the backbone of every business man, the source of income, the source of life, money can’t by everything but we can’t deny the fact that money really helps us to have a good life.
Steve Jobs is a great business man, he uses his ideas and concepts plus the unique mindset that he has. In some reason, I would prefer to take the life that I own, Steve Jobs is wise, but I’d rather prefer to build my own way in the field of business. I won’t take the same career but I would rather make my own career in life. I don’t like the way how he handles his life, well, maybe all people learns from bad things, but what I don’t want to be is to be rude and greedy, well, I can’t really blame Steve Jobs from being too greedy and too boastful, we don’t what he really wants or what is on his mind but as I’ve seen on the movie, I don’t want to mimic his bad doings. I would even not prefer to take the path of Bill Gates 'coz it's like plagarizing him in his path of life, maybe I could just live my life to what it could be and make the best out of it. What I really like with Steve Jobs is his pleasing personality, the way he persuades people, the magic in his words that people will be fascinated to him. One factor of being successful is the way how we persuade people to get wrapped with us so that our business would click. The reality fact of this world is the fact that people and this world appreciates, adores and follows only the fittest, and the rising sun. If you want to be more successful in your life, then you will have to become a stronger being which no boulder can demolish you. You will have to become a great person and a great achiever in your life in order to lead and have a wealthy life. We can take part of this growth, even though that we're small people as for now, if we mold are skills and personality, we could still be successful in life or even be a wealthy man to someday. What we should do now is to study, and study, and study in order to pass our college degree first and then the rest would be next one to accomplish. Time is gold, but we need the right time in order to do things in its rightful manner. Patience is a virtue so live life with it and just wait for the right time that God gave us. And when it comes by to us, we should grab it immediately so that we won't regret anything at the end.
Making your own career is incredible, the fact that it is very hard to have a good career, it’s not that easy and the boulders that we you are going to face is high enough to make you fall easily. But what matters most is that perseverance to make this idea to be a reality. Everything starts with an idea; every business man starts with nothing, as I believe that nothing is impossible if you are going to take part of it seriously. I would opt to believe in God on what He is planning for my life. No matter how hard the path that I chose, He is there by my side and I know that I can surpass all of these. And even though that God will help us in our lives, especially in our careers, that fate still remains bold to us, we are the maker of our own life, the way we handle and choose things is up to us, God is only there to guide us.
