Hi Guys

I need some help with which mac mini to buy. The guys at the local electronics store don't really seem to understand what I am talking about.

(I tried to starting this thread last night but it doesn't seem to be up so please excuse me if this is the 2nd one.)

It is going to act as the media server for my family house. The plan is to store all itunes files and photos on it, turn on home sharing an allow the other computers (imac and macbook), ipads, and ATV3s to access the content.

Hard drive space isn't an issue an issue as itunes folder is big enough it lives externally.

At peak times it would need to be able handle streaming video to two ATV3 simultaneously and occasionally sending music to my sonos stereo at the same time as the ATV3s.

Will the i5 be fine?
Do I need the i7?
Do I need the faster i7
Is the server model the best option or is the server model not suited to my needs.
How much ram? (I am asure you will all say 16g!)
Is there any thing else I need to worry about?

Any tips or help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hello Mac Community,

I wanted to know how I would connect 2 monitors with vga connectivity to a mac pro HD 5770. (the monitors do not have any DVI ports as they are old DELL monitors)

Would two single Mini Display port to VGA adapters work for dual screen?

Thanks.

a little back story: I bought a non working G5 ppc of ebay and managed to bypass the issue of bad motherboard (three blinking led lights at startup) by swapping the whole motherboard out.

As the hard disk is new and formatted, i need to install OSX. The machine starts up without issues (chimes sound, loads up the apple logo) but im running on this error every time I try to install OSX (10.4.9 version).
any heads up on how to proceed?

additionally, i know I will have to run the fan calibration software, any ideas on where I can find that?

thanks and apologies for all possible errors, I'm quite new to the mac world.

It's the White a1174 emc 2106 Intel based. When pressing the power button, the fans would budge for a split second. I have reset the smc and swapped the ram. Also I removed the pram battery from the motherboard for a few minutes, tested with a meter, then replaced. At that point I plugged in the power, and a faint tick could be heard, with the fans budging to each tick. I really need to test the PS. Any help would be great. Thanks

ps. there are no leds on the logic board

Hi All,

I got my Grandad a 2006 Mac Mini, however after 3 weeks (fully working) it just died. Literally nothing works, no fans no light just completely dead. Took it into Apple and they tried a new PSU and that didn't work, then they said it's more than likely power issues however because it's 6 years old they discontinue the hardware after 5 years so if they caused further damage they wouldn't be able to fix it so they won't diagnose it either.

So buying a new motherboard proves impossible as it costs around £120+ I only paid £120 for it in the first place. So getting into the technical issues is there anything I can do? maybe test the voltage on certain parts of the motherboard to see what the faulty part is, I have one of those digital voltage testers so that's not a problem but I'd like to know what to test on the motherboard or other parts.

I'd come to the conclusion that it was due to virgin medias new traffic management as I do download a lot of stuff however I've done a speed test on the main computer that's connected directly and that's getting 33mbps. I've also done a test on my brother's old crappy laptop and that's getting around 18mbps. I'm getting approx 1mbps.

I've no idea why this would be the case. On my old 2007 imac I had no issues with internet speed and was connecting in the same way. Any advice would be much appreciated

I monitor my temperature with iStat Pro and check on it every so often while playing Minecraft and it normally is 170-180ºF at the CPU (everything else is lower).

Anyway while I was playing I noticed a significant fps drop so I restarted Minecraft but the problem persisted. I checked the temperature and it was around 210º! I quickly quit Minecraft and put my Mac Mini in sleep mode, but I noticed a terrible electronic burning smell. I left it for about 45 minutes then came back and shut it down and unplugged it. It was still working fine, but the smell was still there. Later that day I plugged it back in and turned it on and it worked fine, but it still smelled bad. I shut it down and unplugged it again.

Now it's been 5 days and if I smell the back vent or open the cover on the bottom (by untwisting it) I still find that terrible smell. I can't see anything wrong with it, and I didn't notice any weird sounds. Should I try turning it on again?

Do Macs have a USB limit? I have a 2010 era 27" iMac. It has the 4 USB ports from the factory. I have 6 external drives, a scanner, a printer and a Blu Ray burner, plus iPad, iPhone and iPods that are occassionally connected for file transfers. My issue, is if I power up any of the externals, printer, scanner etc., either they won't work or they kick one or more of the external drives off the system. I run two USB hubs that are self powered and thinking it was a hub problem, tried several different brands of hub. All have been self powered and the problem persists with every hub.

And, I don't know if this is related, but I recently suffered a power failure after which the system wouldn't see the scanner until I switched USB cables and swapped it around different ports, to reset it. As well since the power failure, adobe Bridge seems to stall when I try to browse the external drives, yet Finder will go to the same drives and browse files without issue.

I was using my Mac Pro all day yesterday from surfing the net using airport to exporting HD video I editing from Final Cut Pro X and was on all day long. Then I shut it down real quick at night.

The next morning when I tried to turn it on -- nothing. I hear a click sound when I hit the power button but no fans, no drive, no sound, so I got real scared. It was a refurbished 2010 model, it's only been a year, and I haven't put it to its full use even, did some minor editing work is all. I was panicking worrying, googling for solution.

I opened it up and saw that when I hit the power button a red light flashes for a second but nothing else works. I took out the drives (2x 1TB WD HDD and 1 Samsung SSD), took out all the OWC RAM memory (16GB total) and replaced it with 1GB apple RAM memory that came with it. Dusted off all the insides and stuff and then plugged back the power cord and tried it. Same thing, I hear a click sound when I hit the power button and see a red flash for a second but it still doesn't turn on. I even changed the plug to another cord and still the same thing.

I'm worried to death and hope it's not dead or something. I suspect it's PSU that's failed but I'm no expert and I know next to nothing when it comes to Mac Pro related isssues cuz I've had 3 Apple computers, 2 laptops and this Desktop and an iPhone/iPod and I never had any issues with them, pushed them real far in terms of load but this is the first time I'm experiencing such an issue. If it's a PSU related issue, can someone suggest a decent, affordable and worthy PSU for the Mac Pro?

I'm really worried and need help here as I've got 2-3 videos that I have to finish editing for a project and I'm stuck now.

Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello all,
I work at a recycling depot and today we received a Mac G5 in beautiful condition. The owner had removed the hard drive but said that the machine works fine. I installed a new HDD and It turns on fine and makes the startup sound but nothing is being displayed on my screen. I suspect this is due to the fact that the 1st monitor output on the motherboard is an ADC output, and I am using the second which is DVI. Can anybody vouch for this? ADC seemed to have been short lived I can't find an answer on google. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated!
