My mini was a 32bit intel CoreDuo now upgraded to Core2Duo, new firmware and 4 (3) gigs of memory. It originally came with Tiger. I upgraded to Leopard about 3/4 years ago and did a clean install of Snow Leopard on a new partition a few months ago, also restoring my Leopard files from the time machine backup.

I've recently started compiling music tracks and to my surprise found that Garageband was there in Applications. I assumed that it wouldn't be as I realised a while back that it was preinstalled software. I've always thought this was a bit strange - upgrade the OS and lose applications - but then Apple is a bit quirky to say the least.

Anyway, this was never an issue until I needed Garageband. As I say I didn't expect it to work and don't know how it got there. It's version 4.1.2 (08) and it seems to work. I'm only learning to use it so I won't know for a while.

My first question is whether there's a more up to date version of Garageband that works with snow leopard and with Lion as I plan to upgrade again soon. And if there is, does it offer improved features that are worthwhile? And where to get it.

My second question is more a minor tech issue really. Was Garageband in the back-up I restored? Is that how Time Machine works?

I also seem to have ilife 08 on the mini but I can't recall how or why.

Thanks

Sitting there working away and doing some work on my Blog and low and behold i started to get the dreaded spinning ball.

I immediately Force Quit Every App except Safai as i couldn't loose what i had and need to save it. Finally got down to closing down the 4 other Tabs in Safari and in the mean time i opened up Activity Monitor to see what was going on (I had my suspicions that Safari was the culprit) and it blew me away at what it had leaked out.
Check out my screen shot and be amazed yourself.

Using the command line i got

Code:

server:~ tattooedmac$ uptime
9:47 up 1 day, 17:32, 2 users

being my uptime.

So in 1 day 17 ½ hrs Safari has leaked quite considerably. Safari would of been open for about 1 day 12hrs with at times (Actually 12hrs looking at Activity Monitor which makes it even so much WORSE) 10 tabs for a couple of minutes as i peruse over my Twit Links and then i closed most of them, and had about 4 open, Mac-Forums, Cult of Mac (they have Dragon Dictation on special for Half price $100) My Blog and i misc, but i really, really, really, really, really, hope they have this fixed once and for all with this up and coming Mavericks (Mavericks ? Really ?? )

LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt USB 3.0 vs. Fusion Drive

Well I am happy today that I stuck with my instincts and did NOT go with the Fusion drive option for my iMac. Something told me "If it's too good to be true, it probably is". Turns out SSD technology has a tendency to "wear out" over time. That while it's fantastic for speed, up to 4x to 8x more with today's technology, that technology too has it's limitations. So, in light of the new sleek and "sealed" design of the late 2012 iMac, having a SSD that can wear itself out over time is not a good idea.

So one up for having your tradition 7200 RPM drive !!

Now then, that being said, I picked up today and quite easily installed my very first EXTERNAL SSD drive. Compliments the LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt USB 3.0 people. I just followed the instructions off two major sources. One that recommended using Carbon Copy Cloner to handle the transferring of my HDD to the SDD in two easy steps and another site that showed me how to easily setup the /tmp directory for /RamDisk use thereby minimizing the usage of the SSD.

With all that said, for the record, my LaCie is performing something like 300 MB/s (write) and 425 MB/s (read) vs. the Fusion drives 350 MB/s (read/write). The trusty 7200 RPM HDD comes in at 110 MB/s.

So, to say that I am well-pleased is bit of an understatement. Now I have one up on anyone out there that bought the Fusion drive option. Their investment is running a risk as I don't think they'll have the tweaks in place to prevent over use of the Fusion SSD. So it's only a matter of time before they'll be needing maintenance. Further, the PEGASUS Promise J2 is in the wings at 550 MB/s (write) and 750 MB/s (read). The reason why I didn't go with that option was due to the fact that the late model 2012 iMac has a glitch that prevents it being a bootable device. So rather than waiting upon Apple to come up with a firmware update I chose reliability over speed and the LaCie is quite remarkable. In fact, I am using it with the USB 3.0 cable as it turns out to be faster than the Thunderbolt for some reason in this configuration. Mind you, this is June of 2013. This time next year something will dwarf the performance of the LaCie SSD but it's ok because I am in a position to easily "swap out" the external SSD for a newer one. No need to make any changes whatsoever to my iMac and thereby void the three year warranty in any way shape or form.

Yes, I am glad I stuck with instinct on this one and avoided the "new fangled" Fusion drive.

I have a headless Mac Mini running OSX Server 10.7.5. I updated it to 10.7.5 from 10.7.4 a couple of weeks ago. After updating, I started having a lot of problems with an error that would pop up about not putting a disk away properly - even though no disk had been ejected or disconnected.

This seemed to happen most often overnight while Retrospect was trying to run a backup. The backup would not complete and I would get some flaky behavior on the Mac after clicking the OK button regarding the disk not being put away properly error. The mac would not restart or About this Mac did nothing - I would end up having to power down manually and then restart. These were usb3 Seagate Backup Plus drives connected to usb2 ports which I thought may have something to do with the problem. There is also a Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt array running on the server - have not had any problems with that to date.

I tried different drives, different ports, different cables etc. and the problem persisted. Last night I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of my startup disk with the plan being to do rebuild the server. CCC did not work. I had to manually reboot the server this morning and when I went to log back in I got a message that network accounts were unavailable.

After logging in and starting Server Admin, Open Directory is stopped and will not start. There are error messages in the Kerberos log (failed to open database: Database is locked or in use try again later) and in the LDAP log (/var/db/openldap/authdata/id2entry.bdb unexpected file type or format) and in the Password Server Log (Startup: caught error -1 Server received an error during startup.....Aborting Password Service). The Password Server error log shows an error of type -1 but that is as descriptive as it gets.

This morning is the first time I have had any of the open directory problems.

If anybody has any suggestions as to what might have happened and how to fix it or where to look, I would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks.
Dave.

February 2013 I bought a new MacBook Pro and sold my 5 year old MacBook. Now I wish I hadn't because my new MacBook Pro is SO SLOW. I can keep it under control when I don't have a lot of applications running/tabs open/etc, but booting up takes such a long time... From pressing the power button to the login screen takes between 12 and 15 minutes (my old MacBook took a maximum of 30 seconds...). This isn't normal, right???

I'm a complete computer noob so I have no idea how to approach this, can you give me advice?

Thanks!

After updating from 10.5 to 10.6 everything worked much better for a couple of months but then problems began.

Crashes - A number of times the computer either turns off or goes to a gray screen and then I have to turn it off (hold power button for 10 seconds) then back on. Sometimes the gray screen actually looks like the old b&w tv sets with lines across it. It usually, but not always happens when working in Safari.

When I updated to 10.6 and told the computer to go to sleep (apple icon / sleep) it did so immediately. Now, after some surfing or e mailing or whatever, it takes about 20 seconds from the time I click sleep before it goes to sleep. It never took so long with 10.5

One time, the mouse froze and I had to turn the computer off manually then on.

If I restart the computer, it takes a while for everything to clear the screen, turn off and then a long time before it starts again. After restart, everything works correctly until the next time...

I remove the caches every month and reset Safari at the same time. When I was having similar problems with 10.5 apple suggested deleting these files,

Com.apple.finder.plist
Com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Com.apple.unversalaccess.plist

I don't remember if it made things better and I don't know what they are so I'm reluctant to delete them again.

Any help in fixing these problems is appreciated.
