Video of alleged new MacBook design appears

Apple's upcoming MacBook refresh may have been captured in detail, according to a video recorded by the same Taiwanese outlet that also produced photos of the alleged top shell for the computer. The short clip shows what appears to be a partly assembled system that seems virtually identical to the MacBook Air except for the logo, including the webcam, trackpad and power button.

It's unclear whether the footage is accurate. Although there are no conspicuous signs of manipulation of the image, the thinness of the main portable body and the bottom panel nearby raise the possibility of the clip showing an Air alone. The keyboard area is notably covered up during recording for unknown reasons.

Regardless of accuracy, analysts and most observers anticipate Apple moving to aluminum for all of its MacBooks rather than the plastic used on existing models. Previous descriptions have also suggested a more tapered metal design for Apple's entry-level system.

Iomega offers two Mac OS® X backup software applications with the eGo Helium portable hard drive as free downloads for added data safety: EMC® Retrospect® Express for Macintosh 6.1 software, and MozyHome™ online backup software (2GB free; unlimited online storage for $4.95/month). Retrospect Express protects a single Macintosh desktop or notebook computer by backing up to internal and external hard drives, NAS devices, CD/DVDs and removable drives such as Iomega's REV Backup Drive. Apple on Friday released an update for its MacBook Air notebook. The update weighs in at just 368KB, so it’s a very small download.

According to the notes provided by Apple, the update addresses issues with video playback and processor core idling. Apple also said that third-party software that modifies processor operating characteristics such as frequency and voltage is not supported and should be removed before installing this update.

The update can be downloaded from Apple’s Web site.
