Let's all pitch in for our Mindanaoan brothers and sisters. Let us all try to make their Christmas a little better.

Quick facts about Typhoon Sendong:

At least 500 people are dead in Northern Mindanao, mostly from Cagayan de Oro and in nearby Iligan City. Strong tropical typhoons rarely hit the area so people were caught unaware when Typhoon Sendong swept through. Flash floods swept hundreds of houses into the sea in the middle of the night.
An estimated 100,000 people were displaced which is the worst storm in the history of the region.
Cagayan de Oro and Iligan contain many of the most fertile agricultural lands in the Philippines. The local economy will suffer a blow because of the flash flood.
In Iligan City, food, water, clothing, blankets, lights and mosquito nets are urgently needed, according to reports by the Philippine Red Cross.

There is nothing in this world that I love more than surprises! Despite the hectic schedule, drama and cat fight (near zero account balance aside)- this year has been a good year. According to horoscope ( I know right, cut me some slack..lol), next year will be my year! As to people who are wondering if I am inebriated at 7 in the morning, forgive the cheerleader disposition I am currently embracing the law of positivity aka THE SECRET (which is no longer much of a secret after Ophrah got her hands on it).

This came out as a surprise since I have been blogging seriously for only three months, with some sporadic posts from ice age period. So thank you readers for nominating me! This photo actually is not in anyway related, but this was taken by my friend photographer who took a photo of me as I awaken sleeping in the floor after the photoshoot of an ad campaign has wrapped up.

Of Shakespeare and Fencing

I have been doing a bit of Christmas cleaning last Sunday. I came upon my dog eared copy of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor that I have not seen for a long time. This is one of the most hilarious manuscripts William Shakespeare ever wrote (in my opinion) despite being lauded as one of his inferior plays. I remembered laughing about the series of jokes the two wives had played on Sir John Falstaff (past equivalent of "The Situation of Jersey Shore" sans the six pack abs).

Fencing is an elegant intense dance work-out (a far cry from what we see in Three Musketeers movie). I had my first lesson on fencing seven months ago when I took an elective class in UP Diliman. It is one of those things I need to cross off my bucket list.

Lunge ~ the fundamental offensive fencing technique

Fencing has way of mimicking life. For example, when presented with a problem we usually visualize all sides to gain a better perspective. In fencing this is equivalent to parry riposte which means to score by attacking. Another example is if your opponent has an advantage over you, what you do in fencing is parry of measure.

Though this sport has been widely romanticized, its origin can be dated back to Egyptian times. Much of the hype and romanticism lies on what it had evoked during 17th-18th centuries. Think Cassanova settling personal affairs through fencing and drawing the first blood. The main theme of Shakespeare's The Merry Wives was infidelity. It was a time when people found the idea of a woman cheating on her spouse hilarious. It was in this same assumption that if the man was married then his wife was cheating on him.

I've been seriously busy lately so excuse the lack of new posts. Anyway, it's finally my favorite time of the year! Hurrah for December! I can already smell Christmas everywhere. I'm super excited to decorate my place and purchase the peppermint scented oil I've been lusting over the last month. I'm also buying my first Christmas tree this weekend! I want my color motif to be silver and white. Crossing fingers I can find a mini white tree and mini glass balls :)) I'll post pictures when I'm done.

Not to mention that my birthday is coming up in two weeks. I'm not as hyped getting older though. Haha. But as they say, age is just a number (the denial in me squeaks out). A trivia by the way, my birthday is in line with Geminids. One of the highlights on my birthday! :)

The Geminids

The Geminid meteor shower officially begins on December 7th, but it doesn't peak until the morning of the 13/14th. Unlike the Leonids, the Geminid's broad maximum lasts nearly a full day, so observers around the globe have a good chance to see the show. At its peak the Geminids could produce as many as one shooting star every 30 seconds.

This year, the Geminids are predicted to peak on 14th December at 1645UT. This will be a moonless night so observed ZHRs(Zenith Hourly Rate is the number of meteors that can be seen looking overhead in a clear and perfectly dark sky) could be close to the predicted rate, provided we have clear skies and no light pollution. As with all meteor observing, the best place to observe is well away from city lights and air pollution that could limit your ZHR. Wrap up warmly and bring a hot flask and some sugary food to help keep you warm and alert.

And of course, what a good way to start this month than my favorite fashion show. Nothing beats the happiness Victoria's Secret fashion shows bring me. If I could just jar it and keep it with me for the whole year.

Skilled at the art of creating formal Filipinianas such as splendid ternos with vertical butterfly sleeves and cinched waists and 19th century-inspired Maria Clara’s with shoulders draped by pañuelos, it is said that he has taken French fashion greats Pierre Balmain and Pierre Cardin by surprise when he presented a high fashion collection at a show staged by the Philippine embassy in Paris.

Pitoy Moreno is one of my inspiration as a designer. My mom is a big fan of his creations that I would often find photo clippings of his works at home. So I was beyond ecstatic when we received an invitation to his Tribute Gala. It's been a dream of mine to see the master and his works.

To say it ala Carrie Bradshaw "I'm looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can't-live-without-each other love." And luckily I felt that kind of love with my job :)

I tell myself every time I get tired or frustrated that not everyone is blessed to do what they love so I should always be grateful.

Well, despite its setbacks -- oh weekends and social life where art though? Haha. I'm just crossing my fingers that my family and friends haven't disown me yet for ditching them a couple of times the last months. It seriously wasn't a piece of cake for an itch-foot like me who often finds herself capping the day in some remote island in the Bahamas drinking Pina Colada just because she envisioned hammocks and coconut trees (well maybe not in that scale but you get the picture).

Can I just point out that traffic is a major hell these days? The one thing I seriously hate during Christmas season. We had a client fitting appointment yesterday, the usual hour of travel turned out to be a 2 and half hour drive from Scout Fernandez to Forbes.

A Glimpse of Arnel Papa's Showroom

Arnel Papa's design has been lauded for its ingenious ways of incorporating indigenous materials like carabao horns, coco beads and capiz shells (among other things) to his designs. His jewelries are internationally recognized and in demand especially in the United States and European Market.

Like Francis Libiran designs, I too am a big fan of this designer. A lot of Filipino designers, uses his accessories during shows because his bold designs certainly make a statement. To quote, "Jewelry to adorn the body is the painless alternative".

An escape to dreamland

To this day, I am very thankful that Arnel Papa has allowed us a rare glimpse of his showroom in Marilao Bulacan. One of a kind statement pieces, designers are clamoring all over the world are strewn all over the place. You are only left with one recourse- try everything at a limited time.

Here are some shots of my favorite pieces, I am apologizing first hand that my photos sometimes do not give justice to his pieces, there are certain limitations when one is using a camera phone (my camera's battery decided to die on me).

The GMA artist center (GMACC) hosted a red carpet event last November 8, 2011 at the Rizal Ballroom in Makati Shangri-la Hotel to launch their first ever Profiles Magazine. This is in partnership with PREF Media Magazine and Mega Publishing.

The magazine’s maiden issue features nine cover versions - Iza Calzado, Rhian Ramos, Jackie Rice, Tim Yap, Aljur Abrenica and his leading ladies Bella Padilla and Kris Bernal, Lovi Poe, Solenn Heusaff, young and rising Kapuso TV hosts Stephanie Henares, Luane Dy, Jace Flores and Gino dela Pena, Sarah Lahbati and Gwen Zamora. The launch was directed by Freddie Santos, with Bong Gacho providing the production design. GMAAC homegrown talents La Diva, Frencheska Farr and Julie Ann San Jose among others performed production numbers.

This is one of those posts that has been molding in my drafts for nearly a week. This look is actually thrifted from head to toe, except for the faux fur swatch that has been lying on my office from a previous collection. Anyway, it was raining that day and I forgot to bring all of the above- sweater, coat, and warmers. Rather than die of hyporthermia (in the name of fashion) I snatched the neglected fur at the table. So what do you think of this look- fashion forward or fashion akward? LOL

I’m noob when it boils down to painting my own face. Haha. I did not grow up with make-ups on sight. My mom is blessed with one of the most beautiful skin in existence (which I didn’t get. Ugh.) that she didn’t need to do anything anymore. The only thing you can find close to a make-up is her lip balm. So I’ve never acquired the patience or the habit of dabbing anything on my face.

Being in the fashion industry, I realized lately the importance of knowing how to put one. I’ve gained the deepest respect to those people who are gifted at it. Many might say that this is just a form of vanity; well, it does enhance your features aesthetically. Who doesn’t want to be called beautiful right? :) Applying make-up is an art itself. There are a lot of processes involved: the right contouring, blending, highlighting. Just like painting, only the canvas is a face.

Included in my bucket list for 2012 is to learn and perfect the art of applying make-up. This also means kicking my vast make-up collection of one lipstick and a press powder to a higher notch. So any recommendations/suggestions to a make-up noob like me?

Here is a picture of my creative shot taken last year. I usually gain 20lbs of face-fat on my photos sans the reason I don’t have much self-portraits, so imagine my surprise when I saw this raw picture (yes unedited!) on my graduation cd. I’m considering marrying my very gay make-up artist right this instant.

Fashion Watch Finale: Behind the Scene Madness!

Long before Justin Beiber crooned, baby be mine, Manila's Society had been sighing over the work of wonders created by Filipino Designers. Thankfully, the new breed of designers are keen on reviving the Fashion Quartet! Fashion Quartet was created by Inno Sotto and Richard Tann to help Filipino designers to showcase their designs. The show started last March and ended this November at Makati Shangri-La.

Here are some behind the scene look of the Fashion Watch Finale from the Francis Libiran Creative Team before giving the final bow. The first pic below was taken with the very talented associate designer for Francis Libiran, Angelo Calvo, keeping up with the models. Work that hair girl!

And then there's me, having my Cinderalla before and after moment. The first pic was my work outfit at the backstage. The second pic was my quick change outfit for the show. My prince, however did not get the memo and was not available for the moment. My shoes were from Pill, surprisingly was very light and comfortable. I did not bother to leave a shoe behind (color is so gorgeous), let my prince do his thing in trying to find me. I am not really a fan of orange, but it was my palette for the day.

Pages Deli: Bookworms answer to Hunger Pangs

I have a confession to make, I am clearly commiting a big blogger error here, I have forgotten the names of the food I have ordered. To defend my case, I was having my me moment together with my current book selection that my mind must have spaced somewhere.

Plus the fact, it was more than three weeks since I have been to this place before having the time to unearth the pictures from my trusted camera. Anyway, despite commiting major faux pas, I decided that the place is so interesting that it would be such a shame to pass an opportunity to blog about it.

Since I failed in memorizing the names of the dishes ordered, let me just start by answering the 3 W's.

hat: Pages Deli according to their fan page is a place where everyday is a new page, a new experience in life. They specialize in gourmet sandwiches. They also serve soups, salads, pastas, etc.

Here's the thing, if you are a bookwoorm like me, you HAVE to check out this store.

1. This is fast becoming a bookworm lair in the metro, you might bump into old acquiantance who share the same passion.

2. Everything in the menu (excluding drinks) were named after famous books, here's a copy of the pic I have lifted from their fan page. I find the idea of calling my meal after some famous literature charming, after all, book feeds wandering minds.

3. The little something is also an added touch which certainly won me over. This is the first and only restaurant here in the metro that includes a small parchment of passage from my favorite books. Here's what I got from my first visit: a passage from A Journey to the Center Of the Earth by Jules Verne.

Here's what we ordered at Pages Deli (I am really sorry about forgetting the names of these dishes. The only thing I can remember was it taste great as I curled reading that day.

In my previous post Playing with Hues: Yellow and Nude, I was amused and grateful by the comments you guys have left so I decided to upload another picture of myself on what I had worn last Thursday to work.

This one is what I would call casual,/chic tuxedo also known as tuxedo rompers (yup, I'm officially coining the term). I have made the patterns and sew this garment myself during the weekend because I was really bored. I began tinkering on some materials that was left over from the "fringe line" I had created last month (I'll post those later).

I have always been a fan of structured, eclectic and androgynous look in clothes. With that in mind I played around and experimented with the texture and details- my ode to the classic tuxedo! To complete the look, I opted to wear French oxfords and Francis Libiran bow to make give it a fresh and casual feel.

Banapple is a bakery cafe that serves great desserts, good food and tolerable coffee. It has become one of my favorite bakery cafes in the metro because you get what you paid for unlike most of the pretentious overpriced cafes I have tried.

What makes Banapple a place to go for me when I am just chilling out and wanted to load up on those sugar treats is its accessibility. I usually frequent the one from Katipunan Strip which is just 10 minute drive from my place.

Defining Gluttony at Circles Shangri-la Makati

Circles is one of the best Interactive Theater Kitchen here in the country. It reminds me of the bounty that warriors were usually served before they go to war. The place is literally overflowing with food, that you can almost but not quite forget that a lot of people are starving in all parts of the world.

Circles at Shangri-La Makati, is not for the faint hearted (P1,800/person plus VAT! ) or those on diet. With its price range at At this price you would definitely want to enjoy everything that is available there. However, let me just warn you that unless you have a stomach as bottomless as the Marianna Trench pacing and restraint is a must.

International and local food choices, great ambiance, great food- what more can you ask for?

I was unfortunately under a lot of stress when I dined here during the Fashion Watch, so I was not able to enjoy the full extent of this place. I headed straight to the Dessert Station to stock up on the calories I needed to survive the next hours of the fashion show. I have this vision of the Red Queen shouting "off with her head" from the balcony.

I will definitely go back next week to try what I have missed. Reminder to self- please do not to eat anything before going to Circles so there will room for all the food available. I really have to try the meat section this time- fingers crossed! LOL

I seldom find myself in front of a camera, as I am naturally shy..lol You would find me crawling or climbing a tree instead in my attempts to get THE perfect shot. I prefer looking at the subject, and capturing that moment in film than posing and having my pictures taken. Nothing like a great shot, to spike up my happy hormones.

Some people are meant to be in front of the camera, like my friend Maite who looks like a real life size barbie. Some of my photographer friends are flummoxed by how my negatives are developed. Like Tyra Banks in ANTM would usually say to her girls, "some people are just born with the bones".

I, unfortunately am not one of those people who are born with the ability to capture light in the right angle. Some of my pictures would come out as flat and awkward. I look better in person, or so I claim. However, when faced with gorgeous frocks, I forget my alleged shyness and pose with the best of them. Japanese Mochi Creme Craving!

In Japan, it is not unusual to see hordes of people queuing on line for this delicacy. I too have my share of stopovers when I am on my way to the airport to get this pounded rice version. It reminds me of my favorite native delicacy made from glutinous rice that I usually buy in Bulacan.

Unlike the original version, the one being sold at SM Davao has ice cream inside. It still has the glutinous taste outside but with an ice cream filling inside. The combination caught me off guard- sticky and cold! The consistency was weird, but in a nice way.

There are only few flavors available when I was there.- mango, purple yam, green tea, chocolate and strawberry. Each mochi balls cost an average of P45- P50 (if I am not mistaken). I love the green tea version the most (I am addicted to green tea). The taste of the balls is really smooth. The tangy flavor from the green tea had me craving for more.

It is an interesting food choice and I think everyone should give it a try. The only issue I have with this Japanese Mochi creme balls was it was kinda hard when I first bought them. They must have cranked the temperature of the freezer to keep it from spoiling. One should exercise restraint- do not bite into this baby immediately! Let it stand in room temperature before devouring it. YUM-YUM!

Bookstores are my ultimate happy place. I can never really describe the state of euphoria that I usually go into at the smell of new books, on hearing the crisp flicks of paper or simply the feeling of standing in the midst of endless book-filled shelves. My all-in-one stopover when I just want to get an instant peace of mind. A place that has absorbed my best kept secrets and moments-- my never ending shock absorber. It is where I usually go when I need an instant pick me upper. I even do my papers, thesis or scan through my readings here once in a while.

So imagine my joy when Regiscenter brought in one of my favorite bookstores. Fullybooked is just a few steps away from my new condo. Big hoorah, says the bookworm at heart! I think I was one of the first few to step in the newly opened Katipunan branch, and big thanks to the courteous staff who let me click my heart away. Aside from the books they have really cute stuffs that are to die for.

Kitchen (Greenbelt 3) Store Review

Last Friday, we had a meeting with Mr. Arnel Papa to discuss the accessories for Fashion Watch at Greenbelt. The meeting ended a bit late than expected. My boss had prior appointment so he decided to leave us (Anj and I) at Makati to check out Janilyn. Remember the saying when the cat is away the mouse will play? Well, it was a Friday night so we decided to take a break and treat ourselves with a hearty dinner. Anj suggested we dine at one of his fave restaurants, Kitchen.

I have been hearing good reviews about this place but never really tried it out myself so I got pretty excited. Whoever came up with the name of this store is definitely inspired. Short and succinct- Kitchen (kinda remind me of Shakespeare). Kitchen, by the way is located at Level 1, Greenbelt 3. It is open from Monday to Sunday from 11am-10pm. The place is really cozy. I find its ambiance great for long conversations. I would have preferred a backrest on the chairs though instead of the long cushioned benches. I love the fact that they incorporated, in a very creative way the Filipino vibe on their dishes.

I love the simplicity of their menu and logo.

Sea of Shoes

My dream of becoming a shoe designer's still on the top list, alonside getting my Masterals in Fashion Design at Paris and becoming a neurosurgeon (talk about multi-wanting really)

Lately, I have been haunted by the beauty of countless shoes that unfortunately are not mine, it did however, sparked my inner Imelda. Imelda-fic effect is an affliction where-in a girl can never have too many shoes. If she does have a great stash in her closet- she still craves and dreams of more.

Part of my job, as the coordinator for fashion watch includes styling the whole collection. That means I have to market and pull out (a term used by ze fashion industry to borrow from the sponsors) all the shoes that will be used for the the show. For our Spring/Summer 2012 line, we were fortunate to get Janilyn for our women's wear (Thank you Mam Bucci!) and Salvatorre Mann and Milano for our men's wear (Thank you Sir Ricci!)

As you can see, I have to take pictures of all the shoes so we can match it with the outfits and models for the lay-out styling as a reference before the pull-out. It felt like we were in Vogue preparing for an editorial spread in the imaginary presence of Ana Wintour and Grace Codingtton (oh someday) :)

Here's a photo when I went to Trinoman and Glorietta 5 to pull out the shoes. It was so funny because people are gawking at me as I passed by them with 30 pairs of shoes in hand. Plus add the fact that Cedric tagged along (one of the Cosmopolitan Hottest Bachelors of 2011) who gamely carried the bag for me while doing bicep flexes. lol :D
